• What are some good practices when trying to teach declarative programming to imperative programmers?

  I offered to do a little bit training in F# at my company and they seemed to show some interest. They are generally VB6 and C# programmers who don't follow programming with too much passion. That being said I feel like it is easier to write correct code when you think in a functional matter so they should definitely get some benefit out of it. Can anyone offer up some advice on how I should approach this? Ideas Don't focus on the syntax, instead focus on how this language and the idioms it promotes can be used. Try and think of examples that are a pain to write in an imperative fashion but translates to elegant code when written in a declarative fashion.

• What is the best way to learn how to develop drivers?

  At some point in my career I would definitely like to get involved in some embedded programming. I was thinking that starting out with developing some drivers would be a good place to develop my abilities in the regard. I'm open to doing so on either windows or linux platform (eventually will want to probably attempt both). What tools would you recommend that I look into to get me started on this project? Any other resources that you have found to be helpful (i.e. books, websites, programs, etc)? Any advice/recommendations? Thanks!

• Poor mobile performance when running from Eclipse

  So after weeks of thinking my rendering code was bad, I accidentally discovered the following: Running my game on a Nexus S From Eclipse (Debug as - Android application): 12fps From the device while still attached to USB (getting log info in Eclipse still): 24fps From the device while not attached via USB: 56fps I was wondering if anyone else has issues like this? I mean, the problem really isn't a problem since the final release build will likely have good performance, but for the time being I don't want to have to keep (un)plugging my device in and out when testing code all day long. Is there some remedy for this or does anyone have any input/advice? Thanks.

I have done some reading on what URLS should look like for search engine optimisation, but I am curious to know how mine would like, I need some advice. I have a tutorial website, and my categories is something like: Web Development -> Client Side -> JavaScript So if I have a tutorial called "What is JavaScript?", is it good to have a URL that looks something like: www.MyWebsite.com/web-development/client-side/javascript/what-is-javascipt Or would something like this be more appropriate: www.MyWebsite.com/tutorials/what-is-javascipt Just curious because I also read that it is wise to have keywords in your URLs.   My question has to do with my plan/dream of opening a Cyber Cafe in Mogadishu, Somalia, my birth place. I plan to use 5 to 15 computers (all laptops) running Ubuntu. Now that you have the background to my question, I need your help, advice and expertise. What type of computer (laptop) should I use for this project? What type of operating system (Ubuntu Desktop/Ubuntu Server Edition) should I use? How can I setup a file and printer sharing server? What program should I use to manage the client computers? If you have done this before and can point me to the best and easiest way to build this Cyber Cafe, I would appreciate it tremendously. Also, if you can point me to any books, articles, or blogs which I should read, I would appreciate it too.

• Best way to relate code smells to a non technical audience?

  I have been asked to present examples of code issues that were found during a code review. My audience is mostly non-technical and I want to try to express the issues in such a way that I convey the importance of "good code" versus "bad code". But as I review my presentation it seems to me I've glossed over the reasons why it is important to write good code. I've mentioned a number of reasons including ease of maintenance, increased likelihood of bugs, but with my "non tech" hat on they seem unconvincing. What is your advice for helping a non-technical audience relate to the importance of good code?

• APT wedged by kernel version mismatch

  Apt is seemingly unable to do anything useful for me, repeatedly giving messages of this form: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-server: linux-server depends on linux-image-server (= 3.2.0.37.44); however: Version of linux-image-server on system is 3.2.0.37.45. linux-server depends on linux-headers-server (= 3.2.0.37.44); however: Version of linux-headers-server on system is 3.2.0.37.45. dpkg: error processing linux-server (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured This is basically the same problem as I cannot install any package (linux-image-server, linux-server dependencies errors) which got closed Duplicate to an answer that is totally useless for this situation. None of the advice in that very generic answer about dependencies helps. Explicitly: sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get update all have no not effect. While sudo apt-get -f install sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade sudo apt-get -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes dist-upgrade all give some form of the error message above.

• Improve efficiency of web building setup and processes - Wordpress on Mac

  Can anyone see any ways in which I can improve my speed and efficiency with the following setup? Or if there are any obvious holes in my building process? This is for building Wordpress websites on Mac: 1) I have a standard Wordpress setup that I work from which includes various plugins that I tend to use across all setups - thus cutting out the step of having to download them all the time! 2) My standard WP files are copied into a Dropbox folder - thus creating backups of the files. 3) I then open up MAMP and setup a local version. 4) I open up Coda and setup the FTP details so files can be uploaded to the live domain by using the publish button. If anyone has any advice on how to improve this process then please let me know!

• C++ Library API Design

  I'm looking for a good resource for learning about good API design for C++ libraries, looking at shared objects/dlls etc. There are many resources on writing nice APIs, nice classes, templates and so on at source level, but barely anything about putting things together in shared libs and executables. Books like Large-Scale C++ Software Design by John Lakos are interesting but massively outdated. What I'm looking for is advice i.e. on handling templates. With templates in my API I often end up with library code in my executable (or other library) so if I fix a bug in there I can't simply roll out the new library but have to recompile and redistribute all clients of that code. (and yes, I know some solutions like trying to instantiate at least the most common versions inside the library etc.) I'm also looking for other caveats and things to mind for keeping binary compatibility while working on C++ libraries. Is there a good website or book on such things?

• System crash when trying to drag cells in LibreOffice Calc

  Some time after upgrady to Saucy I noticed several freezes and crashes when simply trying to drag content of selected cells to another place in LibreOffice Calc (version 4.1.2.3 from repository). The system stops responding - although for example Clementine still plays music from playlist - I am not able to do anything with the mouse (cursor is able to move, but no reaction on clicking). Did anybody of you also have this problem and if yes, do you have a solution? I tried to completely remove LibreOffice and install them again but did not worked for me. Currently avoiding use of drag and drop in Calc but it is stupid. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

• Beginning Game Development on iPhone/iPad [closed]

  I'm willing to begin learning iPhone Game development. The problem is that I've found many resources for older models of iPad and iPhone. As you know now both have retina displays and amazingly fast graphics processors (Older resources don't take advantage of it). So I'm here to ask you for help on how to kickoff the development. Any recent tools, libraries, standards etc. Is there anything you can recommend? Ideally game should work on both iPad and iPhone, Retina and non Retina. It's going be a 2d / cartoon graphics based game with intense touching (So detecting touches quiet fast is a must have). • Licensing Options for a dead project

  I'm currently working on a project where the original author informally told me that he didn't want to publish the source. Since then, the original author has gone leaving me to be the sole developer on the project. I've tried to contact him several times about making the project open source so that I can have other developers assist me but he is not responding to any communications. I'm not planning on trying to make money of the software, I just want a general license that allows me to put the code on GitHub or BitBucket so that other people in the community can assist me with the development. Can I do this since he is gone and not responding to any form of communication? Is there a time period I need to wait? I know what I asking for is legal advice, I just have no idea where to start looking to find the answer so I decided to start here.

• F# open source project hosting using SVN

  Hi all, I'm looking to choose open source project hosting site for an F# project using SVN. CodePlex is where the .NET community in general and most F# projects are hosted, but I'm worried TFS + SvnBridge is going to give me headaches. So I'm looking elsewhere and seeking advice here. Or if you think CodePlex is still the best choice in my scenario, I'd like to hear that too. So far, Google Code is looking appealing to me. They have a clean interface and true SVN hosting. But there are close to no F# projects currently hosted (it's not even in their search by programming language list), so I'm wondering if there are any notable downsides besides the lack of community I might encounter. If there is yet another option, I'd like to hear that too. Thanks!

  When users enter my website example.com, their "preferred" language is detected and they are redirected (using a 301 Moved Permanently redirection) to example.com/en/ (for english), example.com/it/ (for italian), etc. It works perfectly, but when I analized my website with the Google Page Speed tool it gave me the following advice. Many pages, especially mobile pages, redirect users to a different URL, for instance from www.example.com to m.example.com. Making this redirect cacheable by the user's browser can speed up page load times for repeat visitors to a site. And later it says We recommend using a 302 redirect with a cache lifetime of one day. The redirect should include a Vary: User-Agent header as well as a Cache-Control: private header. So my questions are, how can I do a "cacheable" redirection in PHP? • In WPF, should I base my converters on types or use-cases?

  I'm looking for some advice on how to write my WPF value converters. The way I'm currently writing them, they are very specific, like (bool?,bool) = Brush, i.e. I'm writing each converter for a specific use case, in this case, the Brush is bound to an indicator showing equality information between the bool? and the bool. This obviously makes re-use very hard and I end up with a quite large list of converters. Should I strive to write my converters in a more general way? Can I?

• "bad mirror archive" : What should I put as the "mirror of ubuntu archive" on installation of ubuntu?

  I'm trying to set up ubuntu from my old macintosh laptop, but when it asks me to put in the "mirror of ubuntu archive" I run into problems. For the mirror, I put in mirror.anl.gov for the ubuntu archive mirror directory, i put in pub/ubuntu/ Then I leave the http proxy blank and hit "continue" It then tries to "download release files", which starts at 0%, and eventually jumps straight to 100% and then it presents me with an error of "bad mirror archive". Any advice? I never set up ubuntu before, and I'm really struggling with this step.

• Is it safe to resize root partition?

  My HDD is partitioned into two equal sized partitions. First is being used for Windows and Second for Ubuntu. Everything is working fine. But now I want to remove Windows and use the disk completely for Ubuntu. I can easily boot from live cd and use GParted to delete Windows partition and then expand Ubuntu partition to use the whole hard disk. But I want to know if its safe i.e Will resizing Ubuntu partition change any thing else like the partition UUID or any thing else? Do I need to reinstall grub after resizing the root partition? It would be great if some one who has already done this can give their advice here.

• Slow Wireless Reconnect After Suspend - Broadcom 4312 with STA drivers

  I am using 10.10 with STA drivers, I reinstalled ubuntu because the b43 drivers were giving me a huge hassle along with some weird kernel issues. My wireless speed is fine, everything works well, except upon restart of computer and after taking the computer out of suspend. It takes about 30-45 seconds for the wireless to reconnect, and I think it is a driver issue (I clicked on the network manager at the top and for about 30 seconds there are no wireless networks listed.) I tried this advice already: http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/2007/10/31/fix-ubuntu-dropping-wireless-on-suspendhibernate-resume/ which basically says to change this: STOP_SERVICES="" to STOP_SERVICES="networking" in the file /etc/default/acpi-support This did not help anything. Something to note is that the issue does not occur when I am logging back in after already logging in once and logging out.

  I was checking my Twitter feed on my way in to work this morning and was alerted to an interesting blog post by Valentino Vranken that highlights a problem regarding the OLE DB Source in SSIS. In short, using double-dash comments in SQL statements within the OLE DB Source can cause unexpected results. It really is quite an important read if you’re developing SSIS packages so head over to SSIS OLE DB Source, Parameters And Comments: A Dangerous Mix! and be educated. Note that the problem is solved in SSIS2012 and Valentino explains exactly why. If reading Valentino’s post has switched your brain into “learn mode” perhaps also check out my post SSIS: SELECT *... or select from a dropdown in an OLE DB Source component? which highlights another issue to be aware of when using the OLE DB Source. As I was reading Valentino’s post I was reminded of a slidedeck by Chris Adkin entitled T-SQL Coding Guidelines where he recommends never using double-dash comments: That’s good advice! @Jamiet

  Okay so i've spent a few days learning what a quadtree is and how to implement one. So far I have a quadtree that when I click inside a leaf it subdivides, I wondering how do I get the previous subdivisions to collapse back up, so that only one area is subdivided at a time? This is what mine looks like: (1. initial mouse click) (2. another mouse click) The aim to to eventually track the position of my mouse and subdivide the area it is in dynamically. THE OVERALL aim it to use this to create a terrain mesh and subdivide based on the camera. But I've gone right back to basics to get an understanding of how this will work. • How can I generate a navigation mesh for a tile grid?

  I haven't actually started programming for this one yet, but I wanted to see how I would go about doing this anyway. Say I have a grid of tiles, all of the same size, some traversable and some not. How would I go about creating a navigation mesh of polygons from this grid? My idea was to take the non-traversable tiles out and extend lines from there edges to make polygons... that's all I have got so far. Any advice?

  I have table with all countries GMT/UTC timezones, I need to see what time is in the rest of the countries when in USA is 11am-3pm Not on particular date just know the difference in time. I did my calculation like that I -5 GMT in USA and time is 11am then in Russia for example is +4 GMT. 5+4+11=20pm in Russia when USA is 11am, this works with countries that have + GMT zone but ones that have minus it shows wrong time. I am working in Excel please help me with advice on how to do it.

• How to make pulseaudio work again?

  I was having problems with sound (mono only output), so following advice from another askubuntu question I made some edits in /etc/pulse/default.pa After rebooting I had no sound at all. So I deleted /etc/pulse/default.pa entirely and tried another reboot. I did not backup the file (stupid, I know). How to come back to working config? edit: I tried: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio (reboot) sudo apt-get install pulseaudio (reboot) It's still not working. The file /etc/pulse/default.pa is missing. Here's what pulseaudio and pacmd commands show: $ pulseaudio E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup without any loaded modules, refusing to work. $ pacmd No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.
