• Boost Thread Specific Storage Question (boost/thread/tss.hpp)

  The boost threading library has an abstraction for thread specific (local) storage. I have skimmed over the source code and it seems that the TSS functionality can be used in an application with any existing thread regardless of weather it was created from boost::thread --i.e., this implies that certain callbacks are registered with the kernel to hook in a callback function that may call the destructor of any TSS objects when the thread or process is going out of scope. I have found these callbacks. I need to cache HMAC_CTX's from OpenSSL inside the worker threads of various web-servers (see this, detailed, question for what I am trying to do), and as such I do not controll the life-time of the thread -- the web-server does. Therefore I will use the TSS functionality on threads not created by boost::thread. I just wanted to validate my assumptions before I started implementing the caching logic, are there any flaws in my logic ?

• Can't use FAXCOMEXLib in VS 2010 anymore?

  I'm just in the process of moving from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. One of my projects use the Microsoft Fax Service Extended COM Type Library. After converting the project to VS 2010 I get the following compiler error: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.Targets(1558,9): error MSB3648: The Keycontainer-path "VS_KEY_812A0248FF872DEC" ist invalid. KeyContainer must point to an existing file. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.Targets(1558,9): warning MSB3283: Wrapperassembly for type library "FAXCOMEXLib" not found. I tried to remove FAXCOMEXLib from the project and adding it again, but it did not help. I got a similar problem with other COM references. How do I resolve this?

• Wrapping a C# service in a console app to debug it.

  I want to debug a service written in C# and the old fashioned way is just too long. I have to stop the service, start my application that uses the service in debug mode (Visual studio 2008), start the service, attach to the service process and then navigate in my Asp.Net application to trigger the service. I basically have the service running in the background, waiting for a task. The web application will trigger a task to be picked up by the service. What I would like to do is to have a console application that fires the service in an effort for me to debug. Is there any simple demo that anybody knows about? Thank you Jack

• Flex Datagrid editing cells in same row not firing collection change event

  Hi, I am using the flex datagrid to allow the user to edit some data. My update process relies on a CollectionEvent of type update. Basically I catch this event package the values and update the database. However, if the user edits a cell then moves to edit a cell in the same row the value is updated but a collection event is not fired. Only when clicking out of the row the event is fired. Has anyone had experience with this. I have heard the datagrid is a little quirky is this one of those quirks or am I doing this all wrong? Any help appreciated.

• Ignore SVN files when exporting a WAR file from Eclipse?

  I have a Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse. I can pack it to a WAR by right-clicking the project and choosing Export WAR File. This creates the WAR file as expected and it works. The problem is that Eclipse includes all the .svn folders of the project into the WAR file. Is there a way to tell Eclipse to ignore .svn folders in the WAR exporting process? Or even better, tell it to ignore all files or folders that match some given regular expression?

  I am looking for a free static checker for C99 code (including GCC extensions) with the ability to explicitly say "these preprocessor macros are always defined." I need that last part because I am compiling embedded code for a single target processor. The compiler (Microchip's C32, GCC based) sets a macro based on the selected processor, which is then used in the PIC32 header files to select a processor-specific header file to include. cppcheck therefore fails because it detects the 30 different #ifdefs used to select one of the many possible PIC32 processors, tries to analyse all possible combinations of these plus all other #defines, and fails.   Hello, Is it possible to make a jquery ajax call, and get the response as an input parameter of another function: here is an example, i have the following function call at a location: updateTips(validationTextObject,objUsers.fetchAvailable()); the objUsers.fetchAvailable() function makes a ajax call to the server. The callback function on successful call would be something like this. It is being used to process the result BHUsers.prototype.recvAvailable= function(response){ // some kind of processing over here return (response["status"] == "OK")? "Available" : "Not Available"; } I want that fuction to return the processed result which can be used as a parameter to the function updateTips The primary goal of this is to be able to do all of this for multiple scenarios, rather than writing multiple functions for the same call.   To generate a valid pairwise master key for a WPA2 network a router uses the PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA1 algorithm. I understand that the sha1 function is performed 4096 times to derive the PMK, however I have two questions about the process. Excuse the pseudo code. 1) How is the input to the first instance of the SHA1 function formatted? SHA1("network_name"+"network_name_length"+"network_password") Is it formatted in that order, is it the hex value of the network name, length and password or straight ASCII? Then from what I gather the 160 bit digest received is fed straight into another round of hashing without any additional salting. Like this: SHA1("160bit digest from last round of hashing") Rise and repeat. 2) Once this occurs 4096 times 256 bits of the output is used as the pairwise master key. What I don't understand is that if SHA1 produces 160bit output, how does the algorithm arrive at the 256bits required for a key? Thanks for the help.

• iPhone image distortion

  Are there any reasons why the simulator will display UIImageViews properly, but incorrectly on the iPhone? My Process: An image in a PNG file Start a UIGraphicsBeginImageContext() Draw the PNG in a CGrect Draw text in the CGRect Create an UIImage from the context Set the image of a UIImaveView to the UIImage Set the frame of the UIImageView to the size of the PNG Add as a subview Outcome: The image does not display correctly. The rightmost 1-3 pixels of the image is just a vertical white line. This occurs only on the device and not on the simulator. I can fix the problem, but only by increasing the size of the UIImageView. If I increase the size.height of the UIImageView by 1 pixel, it displays the UIImage correctly. Of course, these leaves the iPhone to scale my image before drawing it on screen which is not desirable. Any ideas why this occurs or any fixes for it? (I will post my code if needed)

Every day I seem to find a piece of code that could have been less error prone if my coworkers knew more about the framework, better-know-framework (in courtesy of DNR ;)) is part two of my teaching process. First part is teaching my coworkers about LINQ, what it can do for them and how it is written. My big question is where are all the good basic resources for LINQ education, everything if find is tightly coupled to Linq2Sql or all other sorts of material. Neither have I been able to find a tutorial for the actual linq syntax (except a specification of it all). (I hope this haven't been asked before but if it has please say so, cause then my searching skills have failed ;) )

• .NET Thread Pool - Unresponsive WinForms UI

  Scenario I have a Windows Forms Application. Inside the main form there is a loop that iterates around 3000 times, Creating a new instance of a class on a new thread to perform some calculations. Bearing in mind that this setup uses a Thread Pool, the UI does stay responsive when there are only around 100 iterations of this loop (100 Assets to process). But as soon as this number begins to increase heavily, the UI locks up into eggtimer mode and the thus the log that is writing out to the listbox on the form becomes unreadable. Question Am I right in thinking that the best way around this is to use a Background Worker? And is the UI locking up because even though I'm using lots of different threads (for speed), the UI itself is not on its own separate thread? Suggested Implementations greatly appreciated.

  I am designing a client-server chat application in Java. This is a secure application where the messages are exchanged using cryptographic algorithms. I have one server and it can support many clients. My problem is that when one client logs on the server it works fine, but when another user logs into the system, the server starts giving me bad padding exceptions for the encrypted text. I am not able to figure out the problem, according to my logic, when new connection request to server is made, the server creates a thread for listening to the client. Is it possible that once the instance of thread class is created, it does all the processing correctly for the first client, but not for the second client because the variables in server listener thread class already have some previous value, and thus the encrypted text is not decrypted properly? Please advise how I can make this process more robust so that the number of clients does not affect how well the server functions.

It's not my class, but the relevant bit that fails is: class foo { function process() { ob_start( array( &$this, 'parseTemplate' ) ); } function parseTemplate(){} } Does anyone know what the ob_start expression is supposed to do? Call the parse_template method in the context of a copy of &$this? PHP Version is 5.3.2-1. I suspect that the class was coded for 5.0-5.2 and it breaks in 5.3? or could it be something else?

• Best practice in this situation?

  My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe proccess, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. My questions are: a, Is this good practice b, How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory? Is there a way?

Around 5 times every second, it interacts with another application (by emulating keystrokes) and when appropriate spits out an NSNotification, that is handled by another piece of code. While the timer code is running, the UI is unresponsive, so I can't include a 'stop' button that halts the timer. How should I handle this? A separate process (NSTask right?) or thread? Remember that at unpredictable times, the timer code will need to send some info back for processing. Thanks.

  Hi! I've signed up for a shared hosting plan in bluehost and tried installing a subversion by following this instruction: bluehost forum svn install script all goes well at first even tried svnadmin create project_name and was a success but then when I traverse to project_name I got this error "svn: '.' is not a working copy" when I run svn info. I think I may have encountered an error on the compilation process, can't remember exactly but i think it has something to do with a ".so" file when I run the make && make install command , something about permission. Any help or suggestion is very much appreciated. Thanks!

• How can I electronically transfer money to another account using Bank Transfer (BACS)

  I'm working on a project where we collect payments from users using credit/debit/PayPal payments. The service is taking payments from users on behalf of a 3rd party organisation. Once we take the payment, minus fees, we want to transfer the amount to the organisations bank account. For now, what we can do is pay the organisation using Online Banking BACS bank transfer. But I would like to know if there is a way to do this automatically using an API. If we need to somehow register the 3rd parties bank account details before making transfers, this is fine. We just want to automate the whole process, since at the moment the transfer is a manual step. Are there any gateways or APIs I can use for this? In the UK?

• How to deal with OpenMP thread pool contention

  I'm working on an application that uses both coarse and fine grained multi-threading. That is, we manage scheduling of large work units on a pool of threads manually, and then within those work units certain functions utilize OpenMP for finer grain multithreading. We have realized gains by selectively using OpenMP in our costliest loops, but are concerned about creating contention for the OpenMP worker pool as we add OpenMP blocks to cheaper loops. Is there a way to signal to OpenMP that a block of code should use the pool if it is available, and if not it should process the loop serially?
