  One new nice feature of Excel 2010 is the Slicer. Usually, slicers are used to filter data in a PivotTable. But they might be also useful to parameterize an algorithm or a chart!   During the PowerPivot Workshop in London we received many interesting questions and Alberto had the inspiration to write this nice post about Slowly Changing Dimensions handling in PowerPivot. It is interesting the consideration about SCD Type I attributes in a SCD Type II dimension – you can probably generate them in a more dynamic way in PowerPivot (thanks to Vertipaq and DAX) instead of relying on a relational table containing all the data you need, which usually requires a more complex ETL process....(read more)

• Parent-child hierarchies and unary operators in PowerPivot

  Alberto wrote an excellent post describing how to implement the Unary Operator feature (which is present in Analysis Services) in PowerPivot (there was a previous post about parent-child hierarchies, too). I have to say that the solution is not so easy to implement as in Analysis Services, but it just works and, from a practical point of view, it is not so difficult to implement if you understand how it works and accept its limitations (only sum and subtractions are supported).   Alberto Ferrari wrote an interesting post about a “different approach” in creating a ranking measure with PowerPivot . If you know DAX or you read our book , you will find that a DAX expression can solve the issue. However, such a formula is more complex than necessary. The next version of PowerPivot might have more built-in DAX functions and should solve the ranking need with a simpler formula. • Visio 2010 forward engineer add-in for office 2010

  I have been scouring the internet for ages trying to see if there was a usable add-on for Visio 2010 that could export SQL Scripts. MS stopping putting that functionality in Visio since 2003 – which is a huge shame. Today I found an open source project from Alberto Ferrari. It’s an add-in for Visio 2010 that allows you to generate SQL Scripts from your DB diagram. It’s still in beta, and the source is available.   Check it out here:http://sqlblog.com/blogs/alberto_ferrari/archive/2010/04/16/visio-forward-engineer-addin-for-office-2010.aspx This saves me from having to do all my diagramming in SQL Server / VS 2010. And brings back the much needed functionality that has been lost.

• Annual SQL Server conference in Poland - SQLDay 2014

  We had a great 3-days conference this year in Poland. The SQLDay (7th edition) is an annual community conference. We started in 2008 as a part of C2C (community to communities) conference and after that, from 2009 the SQLDay is the independent event dedicated to the SQL Server specialists. This year we had almost 300 people and speakers like Bob Ward, Klaus Aschenbrenner and Alberto Ferrari. • Seminario "ABC - Activity Based Costing in Italia"

  Martedì 5 novembre si è svolto un interessante seminario organizzato da Oracle in collaborazione con Assocontroller. Sono stati approfonditi temi riguardanti la metodologia ABC ed è stato discusso in modo oggettivo sulle problematiche, le esperienze e le evoluzioni di tale approccio. Il primo intervento, a cura di Giorgio Cinciripini (consulente e presidente di Assocontroller) ha aperto la strada alla presentazione del Prof. Alberto Bubbio, professore in economia aziendale presso l'Università Liuc. Sono stati successivamente presentati 3 case history (il caso Sandvik, Atac Patrimonio e Marazzi Group), che hanno permesso di approfondire e meglio spiegare come questa metodologia possa aiutare un'azienda a controllare i costi, per arrivare a gestirli in modo dinamico e finalizzato a seguire razionalmente l'andamento del mercato e del valore che il mercato attribuisce al prodotto o servizio che si desidera vendere. Una sala interessata e attenta agli interventi, responsi più che ottimi... Ci sono tutte le premesse per ripetere l'evento!

• New videos available #dax #ssas #powerpivot

  The collaboration I and Alberto started with Project Botticelli is starting producing content. At this point we have three videos available: DAX in Action shows the power of DAX in PowerPivot solving common patterns not so easy or fast to solve in other languages DAX: Calculated Columns vs. Measures shows the difference between calculated columns and measures in DAX Introduction to DAX has a content corresponding to the title! The first two videos are freely available, the third one is longer and visible only to subscribers. The goal for this series of video is to reach advanced Excel users and BI developers that are new to DAX. If we should categorize this content, it’s a sort of level 200 session in a conference. I don’t expect readers of this blog to watch this video (if not for the sake of curiosity!) but if you have to explain this subject to anyone else and you have other priorities… well, you can add this post to the list of resources you provide for studying the subject!

• TechEd North America 2012–Day 2 #msTechEd #teched

  This is the second day at TechEd North America 2012 and yesterday I had many conversations about PowerPivot and SSAS Tabular. In the evening the book signing at O’Reilley booth has been a big success! I’m writing this post from the speaker’s room. It’s not crowded this morning because the keynote is going on and there are no people also in the hall, everyone is in the keynote room. Today will be a very busy day: I’ll be staffing at Technical Learning Center from 12:30pm to 3:30pm so this is a first chance for joining the conversation about Tabular and DAX. But there is another choice this evening at Community Night starting at 6:30pm until 9:00pm. Join us at this Ask the Expert event! • Understanding #DAX Query Plans for #powerpivot and #tabular

  Alberto Ferrari wrote a very interesting white paper about DAX query plans. We published it on a page where we'll gather articles and tools about DAX query plans: http://www.sqlbi.com/topics/query-plans/I reviewed the paper and this is the result of many months of study - we know that we just scratched the surface of this topic, also because we still don't have enough information about internal behavior of many of the operators contained in a query plan. However, by reading the paper you will start reading a query plan and you will understand how it works the optimization found by Chris Webb one month ago to the events-in-progress scenario. The white paper also contains a more optimized query (10 time faster), even if the performance depends on data distribution and the best choice really depends on the data you have. Now you should be curious enough to read the paper until the end, because the more optimized query is the last example in the paper!

• jQuery, .empty() and memory

  Hello, my application (ASP.NET MVC) shows a page which loads data constantly, at certain intervals. The jQuery script calls a controller and this one renders a different partial view, based on certain conditions. This partial view is the appended to the DOM with jQuery; previous elements are removed with the empty() method. I've realized that after one day the browser loads something like 600Mb of memory. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Alberto

• Get spiral index from location

  I'm using Alberto Santini's solution to this question to get a spiral grid reference based on an items index Algorithm for iterating over an outward spiral on a discrete 2D grid from the origin It's not the accepted solution, but it's the best for my needs as it avoids using a loop. It's working well, but what I want now is to do the inverse. Based on a known x and y coordinate return the index of a location. This is as a precursor to returning the items surrounding a given location.

• Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. Comments should be sent to public-wcag2ict-comments-AT-w3.org. I want to thank my colleagues on the WCAG2ICT Task Force for the incredible time and energy and expertise they brought to this work - including particularly my co-authors Judy Brewer, Loïc Martínez Normand, Mike Pluke, Andi Snow-Weaver, and Gregg Vanderheiden; and the document editors Michael Cooper, and Andi Snow-Weaver.
