  • Windows Server Connected to Domain Without Being Domain Controller

    Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a domain controller? Here's the scenario: I want to use Windows Server 2012 to run several virtual machines for testing our web application in a variety of environments. We have a corporate domain, and I'd like to use the corporate login (or at least a common login) on each of the virtual machines without necessarily having to get IT to set up each virtual machine on the corporate domain. Also, I need the server itself to be able to authenticate domain logins (the app uses domain login information for users to login). However, I absolutely do NOT want it to be a DC on the corporate network. Thus, my questions: Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a DC? Can a Windows Server authenticate users on another domain without being a part of that domain? Can a Windows Server be a domain controller in a small network (comprised of just the server and itself) and use the corporate domain's Active Directory for authenticating user logins to the server, the web app, and the virtual machines?

Do i use the same table view but reload it with the sub categories then some how work out when one is click that it's a sub category or is there a better method?   • Crashing when pushing a XIB based view controller onto navigation controller stack

    I was attempting to clean up the implementation for a sub-panel on a navigation controller stack, so that the navigation bar could be customized in the XIB instead of doing it manually in the viewDidLoad method. The original (working) setup had the XIB set up with the "File's Owner" class set to the view controller class, and then the view at the top level. This works fine. In the "Interface Builder User Guide", p. 71, it describes the recommended way to build the XIBs for sub-panels ("additional navigation levels"). This approach leaves the "File's Owner" class as NSObject, but adds a UIViewController at the top level, and nests the view (and navigation item) underneath it. The UIViewController's view automatically gets connected to the contained view. When I try to push the controller init'd with this new XIB, the app crashes because of a missing view: SettingsViewController *controller = [[SettingsViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"SettingsView" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:controller animated:YES]; 2010-04-23 11:17:37.135 xxxx[1173:207] * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: '-[UIViewController _loadViewFromNibNamed:bundle:] loaded the "SettingsTestView" nib but the view outlet was not set.' I've double checked everything, and tried building a clean XIB from scratch, but get the same result. I looked through a number of the code sample projects, and NONE of them use the documented/recommended approach--they all use the File's Owner class and manually set up the navigation bar in viewDidLoad like I originally had it.     I know similar questions have been answered before - such as: Where should logic go, where to do certain tasks, etc. But I have a more specific question - How far should I take this axiom: "keep your controller skinny, make your model fat!" Here is an example: For instance let's say I have multiple source of verification data. A good example would be a VIN number - I can verify it against, manufacturers data source, DMV's data source, also my local databases - to see what I have on record. So I have a model called Vin and vins_controller. Inside the model I have 5 methods: check_against_local_db, check_against_dmv, check_against_car_maker_1, check_against_car_maker_2, etc. In my controller keeping with the REST, in action show - I have a simple case statement which looks at the params[:source], and based on source specified - will call specific check method. Now here is the question: Should I leave the logic that governs which data source to call in controller or should I move it to model and then in controller just do something like check_vin(source, vin)? Should I make my controller anorexic?

    I have a Contacts controller in the main/top area, and I have an area named "Contacts". I get POST 404s to the Contacts controller if I register my areas before I register my top-level routes: protected void Application_Start() { AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); ModelBinders.Binders.DefaultBinder = new NullStringBinder(); RouteConfig.RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); } And, if I register my areas after my routes, my 404s to the Contacts controller goes away, but my routes to the Contacts area are now 404s. ...lots of duplicate controller name questions logged, but I haven't found a specific scenario where the area is the same name as the controller. ...probably an easy fix. Would appreciate help. :-D

    I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans.     Hi all, So I was thinking before that a series of "SideBySide" errors were causing BSODs on my netbook (Samsung N120 + 2GB RAM). But I think it is an "atapi" error which says: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0." Has anyone else had this error and is there a fix for it? Also, I had other "atapi" errors before it saying: "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period."

  • Active Directory Corrupted In Windows Small Business Server 2011 - Server No Longer Domain Controller

    I have a rather bad problem with my Windows SBS 2011. First of all, I'll give the background to what caused the problem. I was setting up a new small business server network. I had my job about finished. The server was working great, all the workstations had joined the domain, and I had all my applications and data moved to the server. I thought I was done. But then it happened. I tried adding one more computer to the domain, and to my dismay the computer name was set to the same name as the server. Apparently when a computer joins a domain with the same name as another machine that is already on the domain, it overrides the first one. For normal workstations, this is not a big deal, you just delete the computer from AD and rejoin the original computer to the domain. However, for a server that is the domain controller it is a whole different story. Since the server got overridden in AD, it is no longer the domain controller. The DNS service is not working and all kinds of other services are failing also. So the question is, what are my options? I am embarrassed to admit it, but since this is a new server one thing I did not have setup yet was backup. So I have no backups to work from. I am worried that things are broken enough that I might need to do a reinstall. However, I already have several days worth of configuration into this server, so I would obviously prefer if there was a fix that would prevent me from needing to do a reinstall. All the server components are there and installed correctly, but they are misconfigured (I think it is basically just Active Directory). So I have the feeling that if I did the right thing I could solve the issue without a reinstall. Is there anyway to rerun the component that installs the initial configuration to "convert" the base windows server 2008 r2 install into a SBS? In other words in the program files folder there is an application called SBSsetup.exe, is there anyway to rerun this and have it reconfigure AD, etc. to work with SBS? Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Moving a Domain Controller VM from one server to another

    I have a Hyper-V Virtual Machine that is a Domain Controller, specifically it is our main DC and holds all 5 FSMO roles. If I wanted to move this Virtual Machine to another VM Server than the one it is on currently, is it as simple as taking the .VHD, moving it to another server, and creating a VM in Hyper-V on the new server for it? Or are there other things to consider that could get screwed up from doing this? Thanks

  • Adding a modal view controller when I press a info button inside a tableviewCell

    Hi, Here is a complex question, maybe it's not hard but there are many doubts i have. First let me give you what i have. This is the only place where i've gotten good answers. I have a table view controller with custom cells. In those cells i added a button (info dark one from IB) for each one of the cells. What i would like it's that when I press that button it displays a new view with more information about that cell, different of the view that i get from didSelectRowAtIndexPath. I've read a little bit about Modal View Controller and I think this is a case where I should use it. So here are my questions: How do i make a view controller a modal view controller?. I read that i have to have a delegate. Is there an example of how to create a normal modal view controller. I haven't been able to do so. How can this button know which cell is it from?. What i have right is a subclass tableviewcell with an IBOUTLET to this info button. This is not an important question because i guess i just could add a NSIndexPath attribute. I added an action in my tableviewsubclass that is triggered when the touchDown Event is called. I did this connection through IB. How can I call the modal view controller through here?, and is it even the right place to do this? Thanks

  • Lubuntu wireless issue with Broadcom chipset

    I'm a web dev that just started a new venture in buying wiped laptops in bulk and selling them at a low cost to lower income families that want a laptop that will simply preform and not become virus ridden and require constant maintenance, so naturally I opted for a linux distro and after some research, lubuntu was my top pick. I'm not a stranger to linux as all of my servers for my web dev business are linux, but I am however new to L/Ubuntu and I'm having some issues with both wifi (broadcom chipsets) on the 20 or so dells that I have right now, D800's, D810's and E5400's. Not sure if you can point me in a solid direction, I've scoured (and implemented) the suggestions on ask ubuntu and still coming up short.   • After startup, display reverts to one desktop duplicated on both screens

    I have a Samsung R530 laptop. I'm actually running Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu (which is why I thought it would be OK to post this here). I'm now getting exactly the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10. I've got it setup with a secondary LCD monitor, and I've changed the display settings so the laptop screen and monitor are at optimal resolution, with the desktop shared between them. After startup though (typically around 10-30 seconds) the display reverts to 1024 x 768 on both screens, and the display is duplicated (i.e. both screens show the same thing). I think this is something to do with my video card, as I had the same problem when I was running Arch Linux. Any ideas?     I'm trying to run a Scheduled Task on a 2008 R2 Domain Controller and all was well until I set it into the production environment. I'm running the task as a Domain User that's defined in the "Log on as a batch job" setting. For giggles I also added the account to "Allow log on locally" after the former failed. When I'm prompted for the password after setting up the task I receive the error: "An error has occurred for the task ########. Error message: The following error was reported: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.." I'm thinking that because this a DC that maybe it needs something else?

  • "This computer has dynamically assigned IP addresses" error when installing Active Directory Domain Controller

    This is a working Windows Server 2008 that I should install Active Directory on it. I found http://www.howtogeek.com/99323/ and followed the steps. After Additional Domain Controller Options, I'm asked the question "This computer has dynamically assigned IP addresses". As I see, the message states that Dynamic IP addressing has been used for the server, while this is wrong. When I come to Network And Sharing Center, and click on Local Area Connections - Properties - Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) - Properties, I see that the main IP address (as well as DNS Server) and also all other IP addresses are assigned statically. So it should be OK. I cannot believe any server using dynamic IP(s)! Note: No IPv6 has been set for the server. Please tell me why the error is given and which of the options available, should I choose? Note that it's a production server and is working with many users in WORKGROUP. No change should be affected nor to the IPs, neither to users connecting to the server.

  • How long to erase flash memory (RAID controller)?

    I made a bit of a boo boo last night in upgrading the BIOS in a Silicon Image Sil3132 eSATA adapter. It's a RAID controller in a server. I accidently flashed it with the wrong BIOS ;-) Not the end of the world as this card only cost £15 but I'm trying to flash it with the correct BIOS as it won't obviously work anymore. Silicon Image supply a DOS program for flashing and I thought I'd use the Erase function to get rid of the old BIOS. Any idea how long this should take? It's been sat at the "Erasing memory" prompt for about 15 minutes. Thanks, Rob.

Do I need DNS as well and AD and so on and so forth. I don't know enough about these things, but I need to set them up to prepare development environment. I would also like to know how to configure firewall on DC machine, to make it visible on other machines because I've setup DC somehow but I can't connect to it... This is my HW config: Linksys internet router with DHCP my dev machine is Windows 7 my DC machine is a VM in my dev machine my dev machine has a network adapter to linksys and a virtual adapter to DC DC machine has two network adapters: one to linksys (to be inetrnet connected) and one to host (my dev Win7 machine)

  • Exporting a VM running as a Domain Controller

    There is a Microsoft KB article that talks about best practices for running a DC on a VM. One of the notes is "Do not use the Export feature on a virtual machine that is running a domain controller". In order to export a VM, the VM needs to be turned off. If you turn off a DC VM, export it, import it on another server and then power the VM back on, there should be no risk as long as the original (exported) VM is never powered back on. Can someone explain to me why this isn't supported? After doing some searching on Google, the sites I found just regurgitated this line from the KB article, but didn't offer any explanation as to why this isn't supported.

  • Domain Controller Placement

    I've been working through some Exchange training documentation (the official MS e-learning package) and all of the design scenarios allude to placing at least one DC from your forest root domain in every site. I'm not sure whether this just relates to Exchange, but I can think of a number of issues we experience in our forest that would be resolved by this. For example, a Microsoft support engineer has stated that EVERY client in a child domain (i.e. all workstations and member servers) need access to a forest root DC to check certificate/template permissions, even on a subordinate CA. I have attempted to locate documentation or guidelines from Microsoft on this, but have not been able to find anything. I found the Domain Controller Placement guide, but it's only a form - you would use it to document where you will place your DCs, but it doesn't give any guidance on where you should deploy them. Does anyone know where, or if, I can find any such documentation?
