• Geek City: Clearing Plans for a Single Database

- by Kalen Delaney
I know Friday afternoon isn't the best time for blogging, as everyone is going home now, and by Monday morning, this post will be old news. But I'm not shutting down just yet, and a something came up this week that I just realized not everybody knew about, so I decided to blog it. Many (or most?) of you are aware that you can clear all cached plans using DBCC FREEPROCCACHE. In addition, there are certain configuration options, for which changing their values will cause all plans in cache to be removed....(read more)

• Geek City: Growing Rows with Snapshot Isolation

- by Kalen Delaney
I just finished a wonderful week in Stockholm, teaching a class for Cornerstone Education. We had 19 SQL Server enthusiasts, all eager to find out everything they could about SQL Server Internals. One questions came up on Thursday that I wasn’t sure of the answer to. I jokingly told the student who asked it to consider it a homework exercise, but then I was so interested in the answer, I try to figure it out myself Thursday evening. In this post, I’ll tell you what I did to try to answer the question....(read more)

• Article Sharing – Windows Azure Memcached Plugin

- by Shaun
I just found that David Aiken, a windows azure developer and evangelist, wrote a cool article about how to use Memcached in Windows Azure through the new feature Azure Plugin. http://www.davidaiken.com/2011/01/11/windows-azure-memcached-plugin/ I think the best solution for distributed cache in Azure would be the Windows Azure AppFabric Caching but since it’s only in CTP and avaiable in the US data center David’s solution would be the best. Only one thing I’m concerning about, is the stability of windows verion Memcached.

• 3D engine for an online city/country simulation game (SimCity, Civilization)

- by Dmitri
I want to create a browser game, in which the user can control the development of a certain region (like SimCity or Civilization). One part of the task is rendering of the virtual world in a browser (3D or pseudo-3D). The rendering engine should a) work in a browser and b) ideally - be compatible with mobile devices (i. e. the representation of the virtual world should be visible both on desktop computer and mobile devices with the same codebase). Question: Which rendering engines (for SimCity-style games) fulfill aforementioned requirements (open and closed source) ?

• Geek City: Where are LOBs stored?

- by Kalen Delaney
When researching a question from one of the students in my class last week, I was reading the documentation for CREATE TABLE about storing LOB columns at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174979.aspx . For this discussion LOB columns includes text, image, ntext, xml and the MAX columns when they are over 8000 bytes and stored outside the regular data row. I knew that SQL Server gives us the capability of storing LOB columns in a separate filegroup with the TEXTIMAGE_ON clause, but I was surprised...(read more)

• Geek City: Preparing for the SQL Server Master Exam

- by Kalen Delaney
I was amazed at the results when I just did a search of SQLBlog, and realized no one had really blogged here about the changes to the Microsoft Certified Master (MCM) program. Greg Low described the MCM program when he decided to pursue the MCM at the end of 2008, but two years later, at the end of 2010, Microsoft completely changed the requirements. Microsoft published the new requirements here . The three week intensive course is no longer required, but that doesn't mean you can just buy an exam...(read more)

• Why an SEO Article Service Should Not Bite the Language That Bites Back

As a professional SEO article service I have witnessed a great deal of confusion, misunderstanding and downright idiocy when it comes to writing articles for the web, or content for websites. Creating effective SEO articles or search engine optimized content is not easy - yet so many people seem quite happy to take people's money despite, for example, having only a passing appreciation of the English language!

• PHP city-sim castle layout

- by Gert
I am currently contemplating the layout system for my php based game but i've run into a couple of worries. So my idea is a 9X9 grid where the center 3X3 are inner castle. The inner castle will be 6X6 if you enter it(click on it). and with the option to expand the inner castle converting one of the 9X9 tiles to a 4X4 inner castle tile. So here is my question: What is the best way to tackle this type of layout? my original idea was a 18X18 grid and saving it in the db as (idCastle, Y, X) where X is a string of 18 numbers long telling me if the tile is an inner/outer tile or a inner/outer building. but i am not really fond of this idea and would like to hear some other ideas on how to tackle this. Thanks in Advance, Gert
