  Denis Pitcher, You posted this comment on my blog and some other blogs: Devteach's promotion for a one year MSDN subscription was not honoured and attempts to contact them result in a "we sent attendee info to MS, it's not our problem" response while attempts to contact Microsoft result in the suggestion that any queries should be redirect to Devteach. Hopefully not all attendees we're cheated though if you're considering attending a future Devteach it is recommended that you don't hold any expectation that they'll honour their promotions. I spoke to Jean-René Roy, DevTeach organizer and also to MSDN Canada folks.  Looks like the email you used to register for the conference is now bouncing (maybe a typo when you registered?).  That why you haven’t received any news about the offer.  The fact that you’re leaving the same comment on various blogs without your email address doesn’t help at all.  Thay want to contact you!  Also, looks like they never received your emails, maybe you used a the wrong email addresses.   I am new here. This is my first post on stackoverflow. I am currently a high school student and know how to use Pascal and C/C++ to take part in competitions such as the Informatics in Olympiad. I have learnt data structure and many algorithms to solve various kinds of problems. Now, I want to move on to become a web developer. However, I know web development is quite different from competitive programming. To make a web application, I have to master HTML, Database, Backend programming etc. But these are all look like separate pieces of information. I don't know where to start and what order should I follow. Anybody who can give a comprehensive list of learning points? I know there are HTML, Ruby on Rails, CSS and Javascript. What else? • I have 5 days of vouchers for MS training… help me choose? [closed]

  I'm a Microsoft centric guy (systems engineering side) and I already know the syntax of VB, have done VBScript pretty extensively and Excel VBA stuff as well. I want to make the leap into proper programming, probably with C# because it teaches me syntax I can use for Java if I want to go that route at some point. Since I have vouchers for 5 days of programming, and I can understand logic and understand how the .NET framework works... I would love to hear ideas on which MS Courses I should take. My primary focus is to work on web applications with web services that interact and do neat stuff... like for example, to create a 'chat' room or something interactive on the web. Or should I do something with HTML5/JS? I am really not sure... like I said, I want to work to make web services/sites. Not making the next Facebook mind you, but I'd like to work towards something in that spectrum on a much smaller scale. Please give me any advice, I'd like to book these classes asap Obviously getting involved with SQL and things that I will require would be important here.. you guys know better than me! Thanks!

• How do you keep cool when production system goes down?

  This has happened to most of us... You come to work one day. Everything seems normal: the sun is shining, birds are chirping, but you notice a couple of weird things on your way to work like deja vu with cat in matrix. You get into office, there are a lot of phones ringing, but could be that they are just doing a new sales promotion. You settle in, when you notice a dark cloud hovering over you. It takes you a couple of moments, but you recognize the cloud is your boss. Usually he checks on you every morning with his "Soooo Peeeeter, how about those TCP/IP reports?" routine, but today he forgot everything about common manners and rudely invaded your personal space. No "Good Morning", just some drooling, grunts and curses. He reminds you a bit of neanderthal who is trying to get away from cyber tooth tiger, fear and panic all compressed in a tight ball. You try to decipher the new language that he created since yesterday and you start understanding that something bad happened overnight - production system went down. Now, your system is usually used by clients during regular working hours from 9-5, but for whatever reason you didn't get any alerts on your beeper (for people under 30 - beeper was like a mobile phone that could only ring and tell you who beeped you). Need to remember to charge it next time. So it is 8:45am, the system MUST be up at 9am. Every 10 seconds, your boss lets out yet another curse which communicates to you that another customer is having problems getting into the system. Also several account managers are now hovering over your boss trying to make him understand how clients are REALLY REALLY suffering. Everyone is depending on you to get the system up ASAP and at the same time hinder your progress by constantly distracting you. How do you keep cool in a situation like this?

Giuditta Pezzotta (PhD - Cels) e Roberto Pinto (PhD - Cels) ci hanno presentato la Service Engineering Methodology (SEEM), innovativa piattaforma metodologica che permette di ottimizzare la creazione di valore sia per il cliente finale sia per l’azienda, partendo dalla progettazione del prodotto e arrivando alla progettazione della soluzione prodotto-servizio, e valutando la bontà del prodotto-servizio ipotizzato attraverso strumenti concettuali e di simulazione dei processi. Armando Janigro, CX Strategy Director EMEA - Oracle ha invece parlato di Modern Customer Service, ovvero di come adattarsi in modo agile e veloce alle mutevoli necessità dei clienti, ipotizzando l’adozione in chiave strategica di nuovi strumenti di differenziazione e di leadership come la Customer Experience (CX) e sfruttando le nuove dinamiche di relazione azienda-singolo consumatore per ottimizzare l’esperienza multicanale e per render più efficiente il Customer Service, creando ulteriore valore. • ASP.Net Fails to Detect IE10 without .Net Hotfix

  Benny Mathew recently alerted us that he couldn’t create, edit or delete posts on GeeksWithBlogs in IE10 (Windows 8). It turns out the problem is that ASP.Net fails to detect IE10 causing a javascript error on postback. We’ll be applying a hotfix to the .Net framework on GWB shortly to fix this issue. In the meantime you can use the simple workaround outlined below. (Note that if you create posts using Windows Live Writer you won’t have this issue creating posts). Log into your GWB Account and go to the “Posts” page. Hit F12 to bring up the developer window in IE10. Click on the ‘Browser Mode’ option and change it to IE9. You should now be able to create/edit/delete posts in GWB. Note this also fixes any other sites in IE10 that might not yet have the hotfix applied. You can tell if the hotfix is the likely culprit if you’re using IE10 and see the following error in the Web Developers Console area: SCRIPT5009: '__doPostBack' is undefined Let us know ASAP if there are other issues you are experiencing that aren’t fixed by this workaround!

I used two different filtering techniques to produce the wordcloud, that’s why they look different. I’m playing a lot with R in these days…so I like to experiment different stuff).   The two main concepts of Kanban is to keep the queues minimum and to maintain visibility. Management/leadership needs to make sure the Kanban Queue doesn’t get starved.  This is key and also very challenging, being the queue needs to be minimal but also can’t get too small during the course of work.  This is to maintain maximum velocity. Phases of the Kanban need to be kept flowing too, bottlenecks need removed ASAP when brought up. Victory Wall – I dig that idea.  Somewhere to look to see the success of the team. The POs work in Rally or other tools for some client management, but it causes issues with the lack of "visibility" – a key fundamental ideal & part of Kanban. One of the big issues is fitting things into a sprint, when Kanban is used with Scrum, but longer sprints are wasteful. Kanban work sizes are of a set size. At this point I got a bit side tracked by the actual conversation and missed out on note taking.  Overall, people doing Kanban and Lean Style Software Development I would say are some of the happiest coders around.  The clean focus, good velocity, sizing, and other approaches that are inferred by Kanban help developers be the rock stars and succeed. This is definitely a topic I will be commenting on a lot more in the near future.

• How to convince a client to switch to a framework *now*; also examples of great, large-scale php applications.

  Hi everybody. I'm about to start working on a very ambitious project that, in my opinion, has some great potential for what concerns the basic concept and the implementation ideas (implementation as in how this ideas will be implemented, not as in programming). The state of the code right now is unluckily subpar. It's vanilla php, no framework, no separation between application and visualization logic. It's been done mostly by amateur students (I know great amateur/student programmers, don't get me wrong: this was not the case though). The clients are really great, and they know the system won't scale and needs a redesign. The problem is, they would like to launch a beta ASAP and then think of rebuilding. Since just the basic functionalities are present now, I suggested it would be a great idea if we (we're a three-people shop, all very proficient) ported that code to some framework (we like CodeIgniter) before launching. We would reasonably be able to do that in < 10 days. Problem is, they don't think php would be a valid long-term solution anyway, so they would prefer to just let it be and fix the bugs for now (there's quite a bit) and then directly switch to some ruby/python based system. Porting to CI now will make future improvements incredibly easier, the current code more secure, changing the style - still being discussed with the designers - a breeze (reminder: there are database calls in template files right now); the biggest obstacle is the lack of trust in php as a valid, scalable technology. So well, I need some examples of great php applications (apart from facebook) and some suggestions on how to try to convince them to port soon. Again, they're great people - it's not like they would like ruby cause it's so hot right now; they just don't trust php since us cool programmers like bashing it, I suppose, but I'm sure going on like this for even one more day would be a mistake. Also, we have some weight in the decision process.

• Ubuntu Tools for recovering data from damaged USB Flash Drive ~ 10 Gb

  I have technical issues with my USB Flash Drive - JetFlash®V15 (TS16GJFV15) It's very critical situation because I can not see the data from it and I should get a way to recover them ASAP. So, in general, I have connected Non-stop that USB Flash Disk at my laptop. Was appear Power surges and when I was coming back, I saw that problem with it. Details regarding JetFlash®V15 (in present): - when I connect it on USP slot, the led is working intermittent and later on remain with constant light. - if I inspect the computer drivers, I found "Generic USB Flash Disk" (when the stick it's connected). - if I inspect "Properties", I can see next details: --- Type: unknown (application/octet-stream) --- Size: unknown --- Volume: unknown --- Accessed: unknown --- Modified: unknown I inspected that stick on 2 different computers (as well in different different USB Ports) and was the same problem, I can not see the content. I was checking with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 OS, but without success. With both OS was working before this issue. I'll appreciate an answer which will solve the problem, not an answer which will certify the problem. What I have to do, to recover the information form it (nearly 10 Gb)? I'm looking forward to be guided from a technical expert.

• Why is Ubuntu unmounting my primary hard drive?

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop (an Asus G73j), dual-booting Windows 7 if that matters. After using the computer for couple of hours or so, I get a popup complaining that a file was unmounted, then my GNOME desktop panels disappear. I can't save any unsaved work (the file browser shows "Filesystem" as totally empty), and other programs break in odd ways (like Chrome can't browse to any new pages, but keeps current ones going... at least I still have Pandora to listen to when this happens!). I've tried looking in the system logs to no avail; I'm assuming that it can't write any errors to the logs because, of course, the logs are on the primary hard drives. This started happening maybe a few days ago. Yesterday I upgraded from 10.4, but I believe it was happening before then. Any advice for figuring this out? EDIT: It just happened again, and I heard a small little clicky sound from the hard drive about five seconds before things went south. I'm thinking I should start backing up ASAP. In response to a comment, here's the dmesg output: http://askubuntu.pastebin.com/uYGshBay Also, the SMART status says the disk has a few bad sectors, and the detailed data says there are 14. It says it passed the self-assessment though. Lastly, this doesn't seem to be happening when I'm on Windows. I recently re-enabled ureadahead (which I disabled ages ago because it was causing Ubuntu to hang at the startup logo), could that be the source of the problem? I've disabled it again to see.

• Is there a way how to customize my keyboard layout in Xubuntu in a graphical way (by clicking)?

  Possible duplicate, but I really couldn't find a solution. I would like to adjust my US keyboard layout, e.g. to add possibility to type some special characters on combination of right Alt + another character, etc. Moreover, my arrow up is dead, so until I buy another keyboard, I'd like to use my right shift as my arrow up, ASAP. However, there seems to be no way how to edit my keyboard layout easily in Xubuntu :( I found no editor and I really don't want to spend years in some configuration files and terminal (not that I can't, but I really really don't want). KLE - the only editor I could find, but no installation guide, no package, no PPA, no idea how to make it working (and uninstallable if not needed one day) Editor in Ubuntu - apparently not present in Xubuntu I found several tutorials how to change the layout, but they all seems to be complicated and not easy to follow. I don't want to spend a weekend in terminal or so, I am looking for an app to launch, make some clicking, finish my work by hitting Save button and - done! Please, is there such solution? For humans?

• Package Manager cannot access repositories but internet is working

  I am currently at a conference in another country and my package manager cannot access repositories. My internet is working fine and I can ping the repositories or go to them in a browser, but package manager fails to access them. If I sudo apt-get update it throws Something wicked happened resolving 'wwwproxy:3128' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) (or Ign's). This proxy corresponds to my proxy at my office back at home, but I have disabled proxy in the package manager. Scanning for best repository doesn't work either, it doesn't manage to connect to any. I have searched for this online and have checked things about my apt.conf file. My apt.conf contains: Acquire::http::proxy "http://wwwproxy:3128/"; Acquire::https::proxy "https://wwwproxy:3128/"; Acquire::ftp::proxy "ftp://wwwproxy:3128/"; Acquire::socks::proxy "socks://wwwproxy:3128/"; If I remove apt.conf (or replace with blank), it makes no difference. I don't see that it should since I am connecting directly (and have set it so in my network options in Package manager network settings) I have also tried some things with resolv.conf (changing name address to primary and secondary dns) to no avail. (im not sure if this would help, following other advice) I am running 12.04. (I wrote this very quickly and wrote down everything I have tried to possibly shorten the troubleshooting process, have very limited time between lectures and need this sorted asap, my apologies)

  Hi. I'm migrating a website from FrogCMS to Drupal. My questions are: How do you limit the list of recent blog entries (title and content) on the MAIN page and let it limit (to at least five) on the other page (i.e. List of Blogs page)? How do you place a 'read more' link for each blog and when viewed full, the 'read more' should not be displayed? Is there a way to remove the pagination without hacking node.module? I tried Nodequeue module but I am not sure on how to use it. I read the documentation and tried outputing <?php print nodequeue_node_titles($subqueue_id); ?> but had no luck at all. Check it here I need an answer ASAP. I need to finish this by tomorrow. Thanks!

  Hi, I need help in the following scenario: On click of a SAVE button in aspx page,some processing will take place. The processing can be of 10-15 minutes.I want to disable the SAVE button till process ends and once process completes, the SAVE button should be enabled. I tried the following but couldnot solve the problem: 1)Client Side Scripting: I called a java script on client clik of button and set the disable property to true.How ever, server side saveButton_Click event is not called because of disabling the button on client side. 2)Disabling in saveButton_Click method on server side: In this case, as the call of saveButton_Click already happend and requested is sent to server,the client side is as it without any difference until the request is processed. • ExternalInterface in flex calling javascript function works for mozilla/chrome but NOT IE

• First TDD, Simple 2-tier C# Project - what do I unit test?

  This is probably a stupid question but my googling isn't finding a satisfactory answer. I'm starting a small project in C#, with just a business layer and a data access layer - strangely, the UI will come later, and I have very little (read:no) concept / control over what it will look like. I would like to try TDD for this project. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 (soon to be 2010), I have ReSharper 5, and nUnit. Again, I want to do Test-Driven Development, but not necessarily the entire XP system. My question is - when and where do I write the first unit test? Do I only test logic before I write it, or do I test everything? It seems counter-productive to test things that have no reason to fail (auto-properties, empty constructors)...but it seems like the "No new code without a failing test" maxim requires this. Links or references are fine (but preferably to online resources, not books - I would like to get started ASAP). Thanks in advance for any guidance!

  We are creating Excel 2007 AddIn using VSTO. Now we have a scenario where in there are 2 buttons. Button 'A' and Button 'B'. Button 'B'needs to be hidden based on the click on the button 'A'. But since the ribbon bar is not getting refreshed dynamically we are unable to see the change on the Ribbon Bar. I heard from some blods we need to use callback methods for the same.
