  • How to set individual NTFS partitions permissions behaviour for each user account?

    - by ryniek
I have two NTFS partitions (DOWNLOADS for downloaded files and VM for my VirtualBox .vdi file) for which i must have full permissions for my allday use account. They should be also automounting when i login to this account. But i've also set Guest account for guests. For Guest account, i want make VM partition fully disabled and invisible (and thus it mustn't automount) but DOWNLOADS partition should be shared with limited privileges with Guest account. Editing fstab i'm able to share DOWNLOADS partition with Guest on limited privileges but VM can be only set to limited and have disabled automounting - so guest can't mount it but it still can be seen in Nautilus, plus I must always mount it manually when i login to allday account. Is there some trick to make what i want? Here's my fstab config: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> proc /proc proc nodev, noexec, nosuid 0 0 #Entry for /dev/sda1 : UUID=35e66658-5ee9-40cf-bf56-8204959e3df0 / xfs defaults 01 #Entry for /dev/sda2 : UUID=26c714cf-4236-45e7-9c46-cfcf91a215ae /home xfs defaults 02 #Entry for /dev/sda5 : UUID=1315BCB027C44639 /media/DOWNLOADS ntfs-3g auto,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=0022,nodev,locale=pl_PL.utf8 0 0 #Entry for /dev/sda6 : UUID=60FF39EB72B72264 /media/VM ntfs noauto,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=0077,nodev,locale=pl_PL.utf8 0 0 #Entry for /dev/sda7 : UUID=c52411f5-105c-45d1-971f-412f962c350e none swap sw 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 Thanks

  • EC2 instance suddenly refusing SSH connections and won't respond to ping

    - by Chris
My instance was running fine and this morning I was able to access a Ruby on Rails app hosted on it. An hour later I suddenly wasn't able to access my site, my SSH connection attempts were refused and the server wasn't even responding to ping. I didn't change anything on my system during that hour and reboots aren't fixing it. I've never had any problems connecting or pinging the system before. Can someone please help? This is on my production system! • How to access files on a drive from an older system, mounted in a new system?

    - by David Thomas
I've recently built a new system, after a rather large physical injury was sustained by my previous system (a precarious balance, and gravity, were not a happy mix). Surprisingly the /home drive of that system appears to have more-or-less survived the trauma. However... I decided to use a fresh drive for / (and swap) partition(s), and another fresh drive for the new /home. Now that's working, I decided to install the old /home drive (that I had assumed until now would be entirely dead and without capacity for use) into the new system to recover the files and data (so far as is possible). At this point I've run into a snag: I have no idea how to go about this (with Windows it was relatively easy, the new drive would be the latest character of the alphabet, and go from there). With 'disk utility' (System - Administration - Disk Utitlity) I've worked out which drive it is (/dev/sda) but clicking on 'mount' produces an error: 1: helper failed with: mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb1 is already mounted on / mount failed ...if it is mounted on / I can't see it. I'm also moderately confused by the disk (device /dev/sda) being referred to as /dev/sdb1. Any and all insights would be incredibly welcome (I've already voted for: Idea #9063: New internal hard drives default automount at Brainstorm). Edited in response to Roland's request for a screenshot of disk utility: Details (so far as I know them): 40GB disk is / and swap, 1.0 TB Samsung is /home 1.0 TB Hitachi is from the old system (and was the old /home drive). • RHEL hangs after starting virt-who succesfully

    - by Nick
Idea #1: Is there a way to REPAIR an RHEL 6.2 installation? During the start-up procedure, after a recent forced reboot, my Linux machine (RHEL 6.2) hangs right after successfully starting virt-who. I can use login screens (Alt + F2/F3...) in text mode. I am clueless -- how can I find out what is the next step in the startup sequence? That step is most likely what is causing it to hang. • Opening an existing process

    - by Grasper
    I am using Eclipse in Linux through a remote connection (xrdp). My internet got disconnected, so I got disconnected from the server while eclipse was running. Now I logged in again, and I do the "top" command I can see that eclipse is running and still under my user name. Is there some way I can bring that process back into my view (I do not want to kill it because I am in the middle of checking in a large swath of code)? It doesnt show up on the bottom panel after I logged in again. Here is the "top" output: /home/mclouti% top top - 08:32:31 up 43 days, 13:06, 29 users, load average: 0.56, 0.79, 0.82 Tasks: 447 total, 1 running, 446 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 6.0%us, 0.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 92.1%id, 1.1%wa, 0.1%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st Mem: 3107364k total, 2975852k used, 131512k free, 35756k buffers Swap: 2031608k total, 59860k used, 1971748k free, 817816k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 13415 mclouti 15 0 964m 333m 31m S 21.2 11.0 83:12.96 eclipse 16040 mclouti 15 0 2608 1348 888 R 0.7 0.0 0:00.12 top 31395 mclouti 15 0 29072 20m 8524 S 0.7 0.7 611:08.08 Xvnc 2583 root 20 0 898m 2652 1056 S 0.3 0.1 139:26.82 automount 28990 postgres 15 0 13564 868 304 S 0.3 0.0 26:33.36 postgres 28995 postgres 16 0 13808 1248 300 S 0.3 0.0 6:54.95 postgres 31440 mclouti 15 0 3072 1592 1036 S 0.3 0.1 6:01.54 gam_server 1 root 15 0 2072 524 496 S 0.0 0.0 0:03.00 init 2 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:04.53 migration/0 3 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.04 ksoftirqd/0 4 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/0 5 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:01.72 migration/1 6 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.07 ksoftirqd/1 7 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/1 8 root RT -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:04.33 migration/2 9 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.05 ksoftirqd/2

  • Mounting a VirtualBox shared folder on boot with fstab in OpenSuse 11.3

    - by ccook
I have followed the steps found here, however, the share is not mounted on boot. The share will mount if i run 'mount -a' after booting. Why would the share not mount on boot? 1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2 2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder) 3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices Shared Folders... 4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper install make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel 5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest. 6 - Open a root terminal and run cd /usr/src/linux make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers . make prepare A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. * 7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image. 8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder) 9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access. 10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

  • Can't manage iPod from linux anymore

    - by kemp
I used to be able to see and manage my iPod with different softwares: Amarok, Rhythmbox, GTKPod. The device is a nano 1st generation 4gb. Currently it mounts regularly and can be accessed from the file system, but I get this in dmesg: [ 1547.617891] scsi 11:0:0:0: Direct-Access Apple iPod 1.62 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 [ 1547.619103] sd 11:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 [ 1547.620478] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Adjusting the sector count from its reported value: 7999488 [ 1547.620494] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] 7999487 512-byte hardware sectors: (4.09 GB/3.81 GiB) [ 1547.621718] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [ 1547.621726] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 68 00 00 08 [ 1547.621732] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 1547.623591] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Adjusting the sector count from its reported value: 7999488 [ 1547.624993] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 1547.625003] sdb: sdb1 sdb2 [ 1547.629686] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk [ 1548.084026] FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive! I say partially because I can transfer files to the iPod but can't remove or modify them. Also one transfer didn't finish and only 9 out of 16 songs were delivered to the device. All other softwares I tried (GTKPod, Amarok, Songbird) don't even detect it. What can I do to troubleshoot this? Haven't been using my iPod for a while so I can't say when exactly it stopped working. I'm sure Amarok was still at version 1.X but can't remember when it was. My current system is debian testing fully updated. NOTE: just noticed that if I mount the device manually instead of letting nautilus automount it, I can see it again on GTKPod but still not on Banshee AND it's vanished from Rhythmbox...

    I just built a test server running OpenSuSE 12.1 and am trying to learn how configure sssd, but am not sure where to begin to look for why my config cannot allow me to authenticate. server:/etc/sssd # cat sssd.conf [sssd] config_file_version = 2 reconnection_retries = 3 sbus_timeout = 30 services = nss,pam domains = test.local [nss] filter_groups = root filter_users = root reconnection_retries = 3 [pam] reconnection_retries = 3 # Section created by YaST [domain/mose.cc] access_provider = ldap ldap_uri = ldap://server.test.local ldap_search_base = dc=test,dc=local ldap_schema = rfc2307bis id_provider = ldap ldap_user_uuid = entryuuid ldap_group_uuid = entryuuid ldap_id_use_start_tls = True enumerate = False cache_credentials = True chpass_provider = krb5 auth_provider = krb5 krb5_realm = TEST.LOCAL krb5_kdcip = server.test.local server:/etc # cat ldap.conf base dc=test,dc=local bind_policy soft pam_lookup_policy yes pam_password exop nss_initgroups_ignoreusers root,ldap nss_schema rfc2307bis nss_map_attribute uniqueMember member ssl start_tls uri ldap://server.test.local ldap_version 3 pam_filter objectClass=posixAccount server:/etc # cat nsswitch.conf passwd: compat sss group: files sss hosts: files dns networks: files dns services: files protocols: files rpc: files ethers: files netmasks: files netgroup: files publickey: files bootparams: files automount: files ldap aliases: files shadow: compat server:/etc # cat krb5.conf [libdefaults] default_realm = TEST.LOCAL clockskew = 300 [realms] TEST.LOCAL = { kdc = server.test.local admin_server = server.test.local database_module = ldap default_domain = test.local } [logging] kdc = FILE:/var/log/krb5/krb5kdc.log admin_server = FILE:/var/log/krb5/kadmind.log default = SYSLOG:NOTICE:DAEMON [dbmodules] ldap = { db_library = kldap ldap_kerberos_container_dn = cn=krbContainer,dc=test,dc=local ldap_kdc_dn = cn=Administrator,dc=test,dc=local ldap_kadmind_dn = cn=Administrator,dc=test,dc=local ldap_service_password_file = /etc/openldap/ldap-pw ldap_servers = ldaps://server.test.local } [domain_realm] .test.local = TEST.LOCAL [appdefaults] pam = { ticket_lifetime = 1d renew_lifetime = 1d forwardable = true proxiable = false minimum_uid = 1 clockskew = 300 external = sshd use_shmem = sshd } If I log onto the server as root I can su into an ldap user, however if I try to console locally or ssh remotely I am unable to authenticate. getent doesn't show the ldap entries for users, Im not sure if I need to look at LDAP, nsswitch, or what: server:~ # ssh localhost -l test Password: Password: Password: Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive). server:~ # su test test@server:/etc> id uid=1000(test) gid=100(users) groups=100(users) server:~ # tail /var/log/messages Nov 24 09:36:44 server login[14508]: pam_sss(login:auth): system info: [Client not found in Kerberos database] Nov 24 09:36:44 server login[14508]: pam_sss(login:auth): authentication failure; logname=LOGIN uid=0 euid=0 tty=/dev/ttyS1 ruser= rhost= user=test Nov 24 09:36:44 server login[14508]: pam_sss(login:auth): received for user test: 4 (System error) Nov 24 09:36:44 server login[14508]: FAILED LOGIN SESSION FROM /dev/ttyS1 FOR test, System error server:~ # vi /etc/pam.d/common-auth auth required pam_env.so auth sufficient pam_unix2.so auth required pam_sss.so use_first_pass server:~ # vi /etc/pam.d/sshd auth requisite pam_nologin.so auth include common-auth account requisite pam_nologin.so account include common-account password include common-password session required pam_loginuid.so session include common-session session optional pam_lastlog.so silent noupdate showfailed

  • Ping Unknown Host on CentOS at EC2

    - by organicveggie
Weird problem. We have a collection of servers running CentOS 5 on EC2. The setup includes two DNS servers and two LDAP servers. DNS has a CNAME pointing at the primary LDAP server. One machine (and only one machine) is giving me problems. I can ssh into the server using LDAP authentication. But once I'm on the machine, ping won't resolve the LDAP host even though DNS seems to work fine. Here's ping: $ ping ldap.mycompany.ec2 ping: unknown host ldap.mycompany.ec2 Here's the output of dig: $ dig ldap.mycompany.ec2 ; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_5.3 <<>> ldap.studyblue.ec2 ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 2893 ;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;ldap.mycompany.ec2. And I can ping the ldap server by ip address. And I can even access the box with SSH using LDAP authentication. Any suggestions?

  • Ubuntu stopped recognizing my iPod

Rythmbox on Ubuntu 10.10 used to recognize my 3rd gen Nano and transfer mp3s. Now I plug it in and Ubuntu doesn't pop-up that box that asks what you want to do anymore. It is only recognized if I reboot and the thing is plugged in. A kernel/driver conflict perhaps? I don't see any processes in R or D state that might inflate the load averages artificially, I realise it may be considered low in an 8 thread system but its higher at idle than any normal behaviour I've previously come across. • Cyrus on CentOS with sasl / pam / ldap

    - by Oscar
SASL/PAM/LDAP is driving me crazy... that's what I read a lot when googling for problems in this area, and what I experience myself :-S I'm trying to get Cyrus imap working for virtual hosting on CentOS with this authorisation backend and really don't know what's happening. In saslauthd I configured the LDAP search filter to use, but it looks like pam completely ignores it. Here's what I do for testing (done more tests but all with similar results): [root@testserv ~]# imtest -u [email protected] -a [email protected] WARNING: no hostname supplied, assuming localhost S: * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4 IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ ID STARTTLS] testserv. The weird thing is, I do get an error when I rename or remove /etc/saslauthd.conf, but when the file exists it seems happily ignored... The filter in slapd.log seems to be taken from /etc/ldap.conf. Apart from some timers, that only contains: host 127.0.0.1 base o=mydomain,c=com pam_login_attribute mail Outcommenting the pam_login_attribute results in this filter in slapd.log: filter="([email protected])" Pam-imap looks like this: [root@testserv ~]# cat /etc/pam.d/imap auth required pam_ldap.so debug account required pam_ldap.so debug #auth sufficient pam_unix.so likeauth nullok #auth sufficient pam_ldap.so use_first_pass #auth required pam_deny.so #account sufficient pam_unix.so #account sufficient pam_ldap.so The outcommented stuff is because I don't have the cyrus admin user in Ldap; that's a Linux user. That works fine when uncommented, but I still need to play around with that a little and first I wanna get imap working. Finally nsswitch: [root@testserv ~]# cat /etc/nsswitch.conf # # /etc/nsswitch.conf # # An example Name Service Switch config file. This file should be # sorted with the most-used services at the beginning. # # The entry '[NOTFOUND=return]' means that the search for an # entry should stop if the search in the previous entry turned # up nothing. • Can connect to Samba server but cannot access shares?

    - by jlego
I have setup a stand-alone box running Fedora 16 to use as a file-sharing and web development server. Needs to be able to share files with a PC running Windows 7 and a Mac running OSX Snow Leopard. I've setup Samba using the Samba configuration GUI tool. Added users to Fedora and connected them as Samba users (which are the same as the Windows and Mac usernames and passwords). The workgroup name is the same as the Windows workgroup. Authentication is set to User. I've allowed Samba and Samba client through the firewall and set the ethernet to a trusted port in the firewall. Both the Windows and Mac machines can connect to the server and view the shares, however when trying to access the shares, Windows throws error 0x80070035 " Windows cannot access \SERVERNAME\ShareName." Windows user is not prompted for a username or password when accessing the server (found under "Network Places"). This also happens when connecting with the IP rather than the server name. The Mac can also connect to the server and see the shares but when choosing a share gives the error "The original item for ShareName cannot be found." When connecting via IP, the Mac user is prompted for username and password, which when authenticated gives a list of shares, however when choosing a share to connect to, the error is displayed and the user cannot access the share. Since both machines are acting similarly when trying to access the shares, I assume it is an issue with how Samba is configured. smb.conf: [global] workgroup = workgroup server string = Server log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 50 security = user load printers = yes cups options = raw printcap name = lpstat printing = cups [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no writable = yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = yes printable = yes [FileServ] comment = FileShare path = /media/FileServ read only = no browseable = yes valid users = user1, user2 [webdev] comment = Web development path = /var/www/html/webdev read only = no browseable = yes valid users = user1 How do I get samba sharing working? UPDATE: Before this box I had another box with the same version of fedora installed (16) and samba working for these same computers. I started up the old machine and copied the smb.conf file from the old machine to the new one (editing the share definitions for the new shares of course) and I still get the same errors on both client machines. The only difference in environment is the hardware and the router. On the old machine the router received a dynamic public IP and assigned dynamic private IPs to each device on the network while the new machine is connected to a router that has a static public IP (still dynamic internal IPs though.) Could either one of these be affecting Samba? UPDATE 2: As the directory I am trying to share is actually an entire internal disk, I have tried to things: 1.) changing the owner of the mounted disk from root to my user (which is the same username as on the Windows machine) 2.) made a share that only included one of the folders on the disk instead of the entire disk with my user again as the owner. Both tests failed giving me the same errors regarding the network address. UPDATE 3: Not sure exactly what I did, but now whenever I try to connect to the share on the Windows 7 client I am prompted for my username and password. When I enter the correct credentials I get an access denied message. However I did notice that under the login box "domain: WINDOWS-PC-NAME" is listed. I believe this could very well be the problem. Any suggestions? UPDATE 4: So I've completely reinstalled Fedora and Samba now. I've created a share on the first harddrive (one fedora is installed on) and I can access that fine from Windows. However when I try to share any data on the second disk, I am receiving the same error. This I believe is the problem. I think I need to change some things in fstab or fdisk or something. UPDATE 5: So in fstab I mapped the drive to automount in a folder which works correctly. I also added the samba_share_t SElinux label to the mountpoint directory which now allows me to access the shares on the Windows machine, however I cannot see any of the files in the directory on the windows machine. (They are there, I can see them in the fedora file browser locally) UPDATE 6: Figured it out. See answer below

I also added the samba_share_t SElinux label to the mountpoint directory which now allows me to access the shares on the Windows machine, however I cannot see any of the files in the directory on the windows machine. (They are there, I can see them in the fedora file browser locally)

  • Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

    - by Castor
Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.
