  • How to improve the use of Delphi Frames

    I've used frames in Delphi for years, and they are one of the most powerful features of the VCL, but standard use of them seems to have some risk such as: It's easy to accidentally move or edit the frame sub-components on a frame's host form without realising that you are 'tweaking' with the frame - I know this does not affect the original frame code, but it's generally not what you would want. When working with the frame you are still exposed to its sub-components for visual editing, even when that frame is years old and should not be touched. So I got to thinking.... Is there a way of 'grouping' components such that their positions are 'locked'? This would be useful for finished forms as well as frames. Often other developers return code to me where only the form bounds have changed and even they did not intend any change. Is there any way of turning a frame and its components into a single Delphi component? If so, the frame internals would be completely hidden and its useability would increase further. I'm interested in any thoughts... Brian.

    I want to create a table of contents and endnotes in a Jinja2 template. How can one accomplish these tasks? For example, I want to have a template as follows: {% block toc %} {# ... the ToC goes here ... #} {% endblock %} {% include "some other file with content.jnj" %} {% block endnotes %} {# ... the endnotes go here ... #} {% endblock %} Where the some other file with content.jnj has content like this: {% section "One" %} Title information for Section One (may be quite long); goes in Table of Contents ... Content of section One {% section "Two" %} Title information of Section Two (also may be quite long) <a href="#" id="en1">EndNote 1</a> <script type="text/javsacript">...(may be reasonably long) </script> {# ... Everything up to here is included in the EndNote #} Where I say "may be quite/reasonably long" I mean to say that it can't reasonably be put into quotes as an argument to a macro or global function. I'm wondering if there's a pattern for this that may accommodate this, within the framework of Jinja2. My initial thought is to create an extension, so that one can have a block for sections and end-notes, like-so: {% section "One" %} Title information goes here. {% endsection %} {% endnote "one" %} <a href="#">...</a> <script> ... </script> {% endendnote %} Then have global functions (that pass in the Jinja2 Environment): {{ table_of_contents() }} {% include ... %} {{ endnotes() }} However, while this will work for endnotes, I'd presume it requires a second pass by something for the table of contents.   • How do I perform an HSL transform on a texture?

    If I have an OpenGL texture, and I need to perform HSL modifications on it before rendering the texture, from what I've heard I need a shader. Problem is, I know nothing about shaders. Does anyone know where I would need to look? I want to write a function where I can pass in a texture and three values, a hue shift in degrees, and saturation and lightness multipliers between 0 and 2, and then have it call a shader that will apply these transformations to the texture before it renders. The interface would look something like this: procedure HSLTransform(texture: GLuint; hShift: integer; sMult, lMult: GLfloat); I have no idea what's supposed to go inside the routine, though. I understand the basic math involved in HSL/RGB conversions, but I don't know how to write a shader or how to apply it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Delphi examples preferred, but I can also read C if I have to.

    I'm struggling to get my head around how to accommodate a mocked repository's method that only accepts a Linq expression as its argument.   • jQuery AJAX call not working in Webkit

    I've run into a strange issue with Webkit based browsers (both Safari and Chrome - I'm testing on a Mac) and I am not sure what is causing it. If I remove this line: document.test.submit(); then it works, but of course the form is not submitted. I've tried changing the form submit button from "button" to "submit", but that also prevents it from working on Safari or Chrome. What I am trying to accomplish is: submit the form call another script to get status on the file being uploaded via the form (it's for a small upload progress meter). Any help is really appreciated - I'm hopeful it is just a quirk I'm not familiar with. Thanks! Brian

  • How does heap compaction work quickly?

    They say that compacting garbage collectors are faster than traditional memory management because they only have to collect live objects, and by rearranging them in memory so everything's in one contiguous block, you end up with no heap fragmentation. But how can that be done quickly? It seems to me that that's equivalent to the bin-packing problem, which is NP-hard and can't be completed in a reasonable amount of time on a large dataset within the current limits of our knowledge about computation. What am I missing?

    I am trying to pass back an image through a content provider in a separate app. I have two apps, one with the activity in (app a), the other with content provider (app b) I have app a reading an image off my SD card via app b using the following code. Any ideas? Does it restrict sending resources over the content provider somehow? P.S. I also got an error when I tried to create the file with File path = new File(uri); saying 'there is no applicable constructor to '(android.net.Uri)' though http://developer.android.com/reference/java/io/File.html#File(java.net.URI) Seems to think it's possible...unless java.net.URI is different to android.net.URI, in which case can I convert them?   • How to simulate a fake MouseOver on a Flash applet in a webpage?

    I listen to internet radio at http://player.play.it/player/player.htm and it works pretty well, except for one minor issue. The Flash applet that runs the radio player has a timer on it, where if you don't move the mouse over the player every once in a while, it decides you're idle and shuts off the stream, even if you're not actually idle, but just working on something else with the radio player running in the background. Is there any way I can send a fake MouseOver message to this applet to keep it from cutting me off in the middle of a song, maybe with a GreaseMonkey script? I'm using Firefox.

    I'm writing an application that will use plugins. In the plugin I want to include a widget that allows the options for that plugin to be setup. The plugin will also include methods to operate on the data. What is is the best way to include a widget in a plugin? Below is pseudo code for what I've tried to do. My original plan was to make the options widget: class myOptionsWidget(QWidget): “”” create widget for plug in options “”” …. Next I planned on including the widget in my plugin: class myPlugin def __init__(self): self.optionWidget = myOptionsWidget() self.pluginNum = 1 …. def getOptionWidget(self): return(self.optionWidget) Then at the top level I'd do something like a = myPlugin() form = createForm(option=a.getOptionWidget()) … where createForm would create the form and include my plugin options widget. But when I try "a = myPlugin()" I get the error "QWidget: Must construct a QApplication before a QpaintDevice" so this method won't work. I know I would store the widget as a string and call eval on it but I'd rather not do that in case later on I want to convert the program to C++. What is the best way to write a plugin that includes a widget that has the options? Brian

  • Using java2d user space measurements with TextLayout and LineBreakMeasurer

    I have a java2d image defined in user space (mm) to print an identity card. The transformation to pixels is by using an AffineTransform for the required DPI (Screen or print). The font size is calculated as best vertical fit for the number of lines in an area with the calculation as below. E.g. attr.put(TextAttribute.SIZE, (geTextArea().getHeight() / noOfLines - LINE_SPACING) ); When using g2d.drawString("Some text to display", x, y); the font size appears correct. Does anyone have a better way of doing text layout in user space co-ords?

  • Creating VSTO Excel Template fails

    I have been trying for ages in all sorts of ways (short of ritual incantations and sacrifices) to get Visual Studio Team Edition 2008 to allow me to create Office 2003 solutions, whether those be templates or documents. No matter what I try, I'm always presented with an error which basically says "You've got the wrong version of Office installed. Try installing something compatible". I have the complete installation of Office 2003 Pro installed along with the Office 2003 Primary Interop Assemblies (which I put on after I installed Office) and then VS2008TE as already mentioned. There has to be some reason why this refuses to work, but I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

  • What does it mean that "Lisp can be written in itself?"

    Paul Graham wrote that "The unusual thing about Lisp-- in fact, the defining quality of Lisp-- is that it can be written in itself." But that doesn't seem the least bit unusual or definitive to me. ISTM that a programming language is defined by two things: Its compiler or interpreter, which defines the syntax and the semantics for the language by fiat, and its standard library, which defines to a large degree the idioms and techniques that skilled users will use when writing code in the language. With a few specific exceptions, (the non-C# members of the .NET family, for example,) most languages' standard libraries are written in that language for two very good reasons: because it will share the same set of syntactical definitions, function calling conventions, and the general "look and feel" of the language, and because the people who are likely to write a standard library for a programming language are its users, and particularly its designer(s). So there's nothing unique there; that's pretty standard. And again, there's nothing unique or unusual about a language's compiler being written in itself. C compilers are written in C. Pascal compilers are written in Pascal. Mono's C# compiler is written in C#. Heck, even some scripting languages have implementations "written in itself". So what does it mean that Lisp is unusual in being written in itself?

  • kick off a map reduce job from my java/mysql webapp

    Hi guys, I need a bit of archecture advice. I have a java based webapp, with a JPA based ORM backed onto a mysql relational database. Now, as part of the application I have a batch job that compares thousands of database records with each other. This job has become too time consuming and needs to be parallelized. I'm looking at using mapreduce and hadoop in order to do this. However, I'm not too sure about how to integrate this into my current architecture. I think the easiest initial solution is to find a way to push data from mysql into hadoop jobs. I have done some initial research on this and found the following relevant information and possibilities: 1) https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-2536 this gives an interesting overview of some inbuilt JDBC support 2) This article http://architects.dzone.com/articles/tools-moving-sql-database describes some third party tools to move data from mysql to hadoop. To be honest I'm just starting out with learning about hbase and hadoop but I really don't know how to integrate this into my webapp. Any advice is greatly appreciated. cheers, Brian

  • Is there any simple way to test two PNGs for equality?

    I've got a bunch of PNG images, and I'm looking for a way to identify duplicates. By duplicates I mean, specifically, two PNG files whose uncompressed image data are identical, not necessarily whose files are identical. This means I can't do something simple like compare CRC hash values. I figure this can actually be done reliably since PNGs use lossless compression, but I'm worried about speed. I know I can winnow things down a little by testing for equal dimensions first, but when it comes time to actually compare the images against each other, is there any way to do it reasonably efficiently? (ie. faster than the "double-for-loop checking pixel values against each other" brute-force method?)

    You know how in Firefox, if something happens that requires your attention but isn't immediately urgent enough to require a modal dialog, it will drop down a little strip at the top of the tab with a question on it? I'd like to be able to put functionality like that in a Delphi app, but I don't know if there's a component for that. Does anyone know of one?

    Assuming I have a class with a method that takes a System.Linq.Expressions.Expression as a parameter, how much value is there in unit testing it? public void IEnumerable<T> Find(Expression expression) { return someCollection.Where(expression).ToList(); } Unit testing or mocking these sorts of methods has been a mind-frying experience for me and I'm now at the point where I have to wonder whether it's all just not worth it. How would I unit test this method using some arbitrary expression like List<Animal> = myAnimalRepository.Find(x => x.Species == "Cat");

  • jQuery capture all changes to named inpt on a form

    I'm trying to determine when any of a set of named input/select/radio/checked/hidden fields in a form change. In particular, I'd like to capture when any changes are made to fields matching jQuery's selector $("form :input"), and where that input is has a name attribute. However, the form isn't static i.e. some of the fields are dynamically added later. My initial thought is to keep track of when new named elements matching :input are added, and then add an event handler, like this: function on_change() { alert("The form element with name " + $(this).attr("name") + " has changed"); } function reg_new_e_handler(input_element) { input_element.change(on_change); } However, I'm quite hopeful I can avoid this with some jQuery magic. In particular, is there a way to register an event handler in jQuery that would handle input elements that match the following: $("form :input").filter( function () { $(this).attr("name") } ).change(on_change); However, have this event set update whenever new input elements are added. I've thought that it may be possible to capture keyup event on the form node with $("form").keyup(on_change), but I'm not so sure how one could capture change events.   • Managing Unique IDs in stateless (web) DB4O applications

    I'm playing around with building a new web application using DB4O - piles of fun and some really interesting stuff learned. The one thing I'm struggling with is DB4O's current lack of support for stateless applications (i.e. web apps, mostly) and the need for automatically-generated IDs. There are a number of creative and interesting approaches that I've been able to find that hook into DB4O's events, use GUIDs rather than numeric IDs or for whatever reason avoid using any system of ID at all. While each approach has its merits, I'm wondering if the less-elegant approach might equally be the best fit. Consider the following pseudo-code: If ID == 0 or null Set ID = (typeof(myObject)).Count myObject.Save It seems like such a blindingly simple approach, it's usually about here that I start thinking, "I've missed something really obvious". Have I?

  • How do I use text in one cell to trigger row to be copied on another sheet in Excel?

    I provide all of the cut lists for our cabinet manufacturing in Excel. I tally all parts for the entire job on the first worksheet in an Excel file, and then filter the rows based on the "Material" column, and manually copy/paste each row in to its own material-specific worksheet (example: I filter "Materials" column for "Maple Ply", and then copy all "Maple Ply" rows to the "Maple Ply" worksheet). Then the material specific worksheets are sent to the shop floor for cutting. This is time consuming, and if I need to change any data in the first page, I have to go and manually update the copied row in its material-specific page. Is there any way to make each material page "look" for its material, and automatically populate itself with any row that has the appropriate material in the material column (example: any time I enter "Maple Ply" in the material column of sheet one, that row is automatically copied to the "Maple Ply" worksheet)? If so, could this link be dynamic, rather than just a copy, so that if I change a cell in a particular row on sheet one, that data is also updated on the material-specific worksheet copy?   • Add multiple entities to Javascript namespace from different files

    Given a namespaces ns used in two different files: abc.js ns = ns || (function () { foo = function() { ... }; return { abc : foo }; }()); def.js // is this correct? ns = ns || {} ns.def = ns.def || (function () { defoo = function () { ... }; return { deFoo: defoo }; }()); Is this the proper way to add def to the ns to a namespace? In other words, how does one merge two contributions to a namespace in javascript? If abc.js comes before def.js I'd expect this to work. If def.js comes before abc.js I'd expect ns.abc to not exist because ns is defined at the time. It seems there ought to be a design pattern to eliminate any uncertainty of doing inclusions with the javascript namespace pattern. I'd appreciate thoughts and input on how best to go about this sort of 'inclusion'. Thanks for reading. Brian
