  • How can a 1Gb Java heap on a 64bit machine use 3Gb of VIRT space?

    - by Graeme Moss
I run the same process on a 32bit machine as on a 64bit machine with the same memory VM settings (-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m) and similar VM version (1.6.0_05 vs 1.6.0_16). However the virtual space used by the 64bit machine (as shown in top under "VIRT") is almost three times as big as that in 32bit! I know 64bit VMs will use a little more memory for the larger references, but how can it be three times as big? Am I reading VIRT in top incorrectly? Full data shown below, showing top and then the result of jmap -heap, first for 64bit, then for 32bit. Note the VIRT for 64bit is 3319m for 32bit is 1220m. * 64bit * PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 22534 agent 20 0 3319m 163m 14m S 4.7 2.0 0:04.28 java $ jmap -heap 22534 Attaching to process ID 22534, please wait... • What is the best 3-D technology for the "Online Room Planner" site?

    - by Omega
The main user-case is: Create the 2D floor plan See the 3D view of the room in colors and in dynamic lighting (switching on and off the lamps) Select the furniture from the large library of predefined samples. Change the color and texture of the furniture samples. Create the photos of the 3D room view from different points. Also user can move and turn the camera in the room and discover the view.

  • Why can I not use the full capacity of my SSD?

    - by bcmcfc
I am using Paragon to migrate Windows 7 to an SSD. The C drive which should be migrated is a 100GB partition. During the process, Paragon formats the SSD to 80GB. Why doesn't it take the 100 GB? It later fails because it thinks there isn't enough space on the SSD. However the SSD is 11GB bigger than the partition, and only 45GB of the partition were used anyway. How do I get around this? Is there another tool to do the same job which does it better ?

  • Can I swap a HDD from a RAID 1 for a bigger capacity drive?

    - by Gnuffo1
I have a RAID 1 setup with two 500GB drives. So they mirror each other. I know that if I take one of them out and put in a new 500GB drive it will set it up so that the new drive will mirror the old one. My question is if I take out one of the 500GB drives and add say a 2TB drive, will it set up the 2TB drive to mirror the 500GB? I assume if it does, it will only allow me access to 500GB. However, if I then take out the one remaining 500GB after the data has been mirrored and stick in a 2TB, once that is rebuilt, will I then have a 2TB RAID setup with the same data as what was originally on the 2x 500GB setup?

  • How do I assess the capacity of my link for Active Directory needs?

    - by adon
I'm working for a company that has a head office and some remote sites. We have an Active Directory server in the head office and we now want all of the users in the remote sites to join and work on the domain at the head office. I want to assess our bandwidth to see if we have enough to carry all the traffic between offices smoothly. What can I do or which tool can I use for the assessment and statistics?

  • Why did Ubuntu suddenly get so slow?

    - by user101383
12.10 has been slowing down mysteriously. Normally, in past versions, I can log in, open Firefox, and it will pop up within seconds. 12.10 is like that upon install too, though once I install my old apps, it gets very slow by Ubuntu standards. After login the hard drive will just make noise for a while before the OS will do anything. • Kubuntu 12.04 - Touchpad and keyboard stopped working at random

    - by StepTNT
As in the title, I've got this problem with my Kubuntu 12.04. At first I've thought that the whole system was hung, but it happened again 5 minutes ago and, while the keyboard and the touchpad stopped working, the music was still playing, so I guess that's just an "input" problem, because the system was still working! Any solution? Is there some data that you need to know about my setup? • get user selection and convert it to a String [Android]

    - by Kira
    Hello, I just got a Droid, and after having used it for a while, I felt like I wanted to make a program for it. The program that I am trying to make calculates the actual storage capacity of secondary storage mediums. The user select from a list of units that ranges from KB to YB and the size the entered gets put into a formula depending on the chosen unit. However, there is a bit of a problem with the program. From my testing, I have narrowed it down to the fact that the user's selection is not really being obtained from the spinner. Everything I look up seems to point me to a method quite similar to how it works in J2SE, but it does nothing. How am I actually supposed to get that data? Here is the Java source code for the app: package com.Actual.android; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.*; import android.view.*; public class ActualStorageActivity extends Activity { Spinner selection; /* declare variable, in order to control spinner (ComboBox) */ ArrayAdapter adapter; /* declare an array adapter object, in order for spinner to work */ EditText size; /* declare variable to control textfield */ EditText result; /* declare variable to control textfield */ Button calculate; /* declare variable to control button */ Storage capacity = new Storage(); /* import custom class for formulas */ /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // load content from XML selection = (Spinner)findViewById(R.id.spinner); adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource(this, R.array.choices_array, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); size = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.size); result = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.result); calculate = (Button)findViewById(R.id.submit); adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); /* set resource for dropdown */ selection.setAdapter(adapter); // attach adapter to spinner result.setEnabled(false); // make read-only result.setText("usable storage"); } public void calcAction(View view) { String initial = size.getText().toString(); String unit = selection.getSelectedItem().toString(); String end = "Nothing"; double convert = Double.parseDouble(initial); capacity.setStorage(convert); if (unit == "KB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getKB()); } else if (unit == "MB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getMB()); } else if (unit == "GB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getGB()); } else if (unit == "TB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getTB()); } else if (unit == "PB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getPB()); } else if (unit == "EB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getEB()); } else if (unit == "ZB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getZB()); } else if (unit == "YB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getYB()); } else; result.setText(end); } }

  • NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Jagged
I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? Any help appreciated. uname -a: Linux HP-ENVY-15-1104tx 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux lshw: hp-envy-15-1104tx description: Notebook • Best RAID setup for multimedia fileserver?

    - by Mr. Schwabe
I'm building a fileserver for my small office. We do film and multimedia design. Only 3 clients connected. The server is primarily for local access to graphic assets and video files. I'm looking for advice on hardware and software required. Particularly for the RAID. I have the following objectives: A) merged capacity I'd like all other systems to access the data as a single mapped network drive that has an initial capacity of 10 TB. So perhaps 5x 2TB drives (plus mirror drives for redundancy). B) easy way to increase capacity Thinking long term, I'd like to 'easily' add more drives to the array for a potential two or three fold increase in capacity. So theoretically it could get upto a 30 TB raid array consisting of maybe 15x 2 TB drives of capacity (plus mirror drives for redundancy). C) maximum fault tolerance I want at least 1 mirror drive per capacity drive (in laymen's terms). So if I start with 10 TB / 5x 2TB of capacity, I suppose I would need another another 5x 2TB drives to be mirrors. So 10 drives total. But I'd also like potential for even more redundancy; with upto 2 additional mirrors per 'capacity drive' (and to be able to add them to the array anytime with ease). D) easy way to monitor drive health I'd like an intuitive interface for managing the raid and monitoring drive health The other systems accessing this network drive will be running Windows, but also the odd Ubuntu and MacOS system as well. Are these objectives attainable? What type of RAID setup do you recommend? What hardware will be required? Also what OS do you think this system should be running? Does it really matter? I'm no network admin - just a long time Windoze user, without much Linux experience. That said, I'm not opposed to a Linux solution if it's easy enough and more practical than a Windows OS for this server. Or maybe something such as Openfiler. Budget should hit the sweet spot for value and performance (hence my preference to use 2TB drives). The biggest focus is storage; aside from that the system just needs to keep the drives running optimally with perhaps 2 or 3 clients accessing / writing files at any given time. The hardware quote would start with something like 10x 2TB WD Caviar Blacks; about $1900 for the storage + $x for remaining parts. http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=42775&vpn=WD2001FASS&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD Your advice is appreciated, thanks!

  • Problems with delete in destructor

How should I correct this? template class CyclicalArray { private: T* mem_ptr; public: CyclicalArray(size_t capacity, const T& default_value) { this->default_value = default_value; this->capacity = capacity; head_index = 0; mem_ptr = ::new T[capacity]; //memory allocating for(T* p = mem_ptr; p < mem_ptr + capacity * sizeof(T); p += sizeof(T)) { ::new (p) T (default_value); //initialization } } ~CyclicalArray() { for(T* p = mem_ptr + sizeof(T); p < mem_ptr + capacity * sizeof(T); p += sizeof(T)) { p->~T(); } delete[] mem_ptr; }

  • Do I need to check capacity before adding an element to a vector in c++ ?

    - by Cassie
Hi dear all, I am a newbie to c++ STL vectors so sorry for silly questions in advence. :) In my program, I have a vector which needs to store unknown number of elements. Do I have to check if the vector has achieved its max_size before adding an new element to it ? Will a c++ compiler throw an exception automatically when a program tries to add elements to a full vector ? Thank you very much, Cassie

  • Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

    - by Tim Cooper
We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?

  • postgreSQL - pg_class question

    - by Sachin Chourasiya
PostgreSQL stores statistics about tables in the system table called pg_class. The query planner accesses this table for every query. These statistics may only be updated using the analyze command. If the analyze command is not run often, the statistics in this table may not be accurate and the query planner may make poor decisions which can degrade system performance. Another strategy is for the query planner to generate these statistics for each query (including selects, inserts, updates, and deletes). This approach would allow the query planner to have the most up-to-date statistics possible. Why postgres always rely on pg_class instead?

  • Recommended storage scheme for home server? (LVM/JBOD/RAID 5...)

    - by j-g-faustus
Are there any guidelines for which storage scheme(s) makes most sense for a multiple-disk home server? I am assuming a separate boot/OS disk (so bootability is not a concern, this is for data storage only) and 4-6 storage disks of 1-2 TB each, for a total storage capacity in the range 4-12 TB. The file system is ext4, I expect there will be only one big partition spanning all disks. As far as I can tell, the alternatives are individual disks pros: works with any combination of disk sizes; losing a disk loses only the data on that disk; no need for volume management. cons: data management is clumsy when logical units (like a "movies" folder) are larger than the capacity of any single drive. JBOD span pros: can merge disks of any size. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks LVM pros: can merge disks of any size; relatively simple to add and remove disks. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks RAID 0 pros: speed cons: losing one drive loses all data; disks must be same size RAID 5 pros: data survives losing one disk cons: gives up one disk worth of capacity; disks must be same size RAID 6 pros: data survives losing two disks cons: gives up two disks worth of capacity; disks must be same size I'm primarily considering either LVM or JBOD span simply because it will let me reuse older, smaller-capacity disks when I upgrade the system. The runner-up is RAID 0 for speed. I'm planning on having full backups to a separate system, so I expect the extra redundancy from RAID levels 5 or 6 won't be important. Is this a fair representation of the alternatives? Are there other considerations or alternatives I have missed? And what would you recommend?

  • Price Drop for Processor based License on Exalytics

    - by Mike.Hallett(at)Oracle-BI&EPM
    ·       33% reduction in the list `per processor` license pricing for the Oracle BI Foundation Suite ·       New capacity-based licensing which allows customers to think big & start small, significantly lowering the entry price point for an Exalytics. Oracle BI Software List Price changes In response to new powerful platforms like the in-memory Oracle Exalytics with 40 cpu cores (counted under Oracle pricing policy as 20 “processors”), the list price of “Oracle BI Foundation Suite” (BIFS) is reduced by 33% from $450K per processor to $300K per processor. Capacity-based licensing on Exalytics (Trusted Partitions) “Capacity-based pricing” for the BIFS, Endeca, Essbase and Times Ten for Exalytics software is now available for Exalytics systems. This is delivered using “Oracle VM” (OVM).  We still ship a full Exalytics machine to all customers, but they may choose to only use and license a subset of the processors installed in the machine.   Customers can license Exalytics software in units of 5 “processors”: 5, 10, 15 or the full capacity 20.   As the customer’s implementation and workload increases, it is a simple matter to license additional processors and, using OVM, make them available to the BI or EPM application. Endeca Information Discovery now available on Exalytics Oracle has also announced the certification of “Oracle Endeca Information Discovery” (EID) on the Exalytics machine.    EID can be licensed alone or in combination with the BIFS & Times Ten for an Exalytics stack, and also participates in the capacity based pricing outlined above.   The Exalytics hardware is the perfect platform for EID, and provides superb power and performance for this in-memory hybrid text-search-analytics.   For more information : Oracle Price lists Oracle Partitioning Policy Discussion by Mark Rittman (Rittman Mead Consulting ltd.) on Oracle Trusted Partitions for Oracle Engineered Systems, Oracle Exalytics and Updated BI Foundation Pricing.

  • I need advice about iscsi + zfs(or ntfs) + windows 2008 clustering

    - by Fatih
I want to setup a storage farm with iSCSI. I have 2 cluster node machine, 1 iscsi target machine that has 8TB installed as RAID 10. The capacity is now 8TB, but I'll upgrade the capacity in future. Let's say, I installed clusters as file server, and I connected these servers to iscsi target, then I shared 8TB capacity as an only folder to the windows users. Users now see only a folder whose capacity is 8TB. But if I want to add another 8TB to expand the main capacity, the users must not see the second folder for this new 8 TB. The users must see only a folder as before, but this time this folder's capacity expanded to 16TB. And so on, if I add another 8TB, the users must deal with only a folder. For this purpose, I've learnt that ZFS can expand its size without a problem. So if I use ZFS as a file system on iSCSI luns, how can the cluster machines see the ZFS. Because the cluster machines have windows 2008. Is there another way to expand the size of shared folder without a problem? Does ntfs support it?

  • Tomcat web application intermittent freeze

    - by tinny
I have a Grails web application (just a standard war file) deployed on a Ubuntu 10.10 server running on tomcat 6. My database is postgresql. The problem is that every so often (once or twice a day after inactivity) when I try to log into this web application it just freezes. I can navigate to the login page but when I try and login (first time the DB is hit, might be a clue..?) the application just freezes indefinitely, no 500 response code... the browser just waits and waits. I followed the instructions detailed here because the problem described sounded the same as mine. My GC logging showed no long running GC, all sub sec. When the application freezes a jmap heap output is... using parallel threads in the new generation. using thread-local object allocation. • JVM process resident set size "equals" max heap size, not current heap size

    - by Volune
After a few reading about jvm memory (here, here, here, others I forgot...), I am expecting the resident set size of my java process to be roughly equal to the current heap space capacity. That's not what the numbers are saying, it seems to be roughly equal to the max heap space capacity: Resident set size: # echo 0 $(cat /proc/1/smaps | grep Rss | awk '{print $2}' | sed 's#^#+#') | bc 11507912 # ps -C java -O rss | gawk '{ count ++; sum += $2 }; END {count --; print "Number of processes =",count; print "Memory usage per process =",sum/1024/count, "MB"; print "Total memory usage =", sum/1024, "MB" ;};' Number of processes = 1 Memory usage per process = 11237.8 MB Total memory usage = 11237.8 MB Java heap # jmap -heap 1 Attaching to process ID 1, please wait... Are my expectations wrong? What should I expect? I need the heap space to be able to grow during spikes (to avoid very slow Full GC), but I would like to have the resident set size as low as possible the rest of the time, to benefit the other processes running on the server. Is there a better way to achieve that? • Spaces while using "Print" in VBA

    - by Josh
    For some reason I am getting a lot of spaces in front of each value while trying to print to a flat text file. 'append headers Cells(start_row - 2, 1).Select For i = 1 To ActiveCell.SpecialCells(xlLastCell).Column If ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Column = ActiveCell.SpecialCells(xlLastCell).Column Then Print #finalCSV, Cells(start_row - 2, i) & "\n", Else Print #finalCSV, Cells(start_row - 2, i) & ",", End If Next i Example output: DC Capacity:hi, Resistive Capacity:lo, Resistive Capacity:hi, Reactive Capacity:lo, Is there any way to get rid of these spaces?
