    I've got the following DropDownList control: <asp:DropDownList ID="SubjectFilter" runat="server" AutoPostBack="True" onselectedindexchanged="SubjectFilter_SelectedIndexChanged"></asp:DropDownList> SubjectFilter data: BookStore b = new BookStore(); b.LoadFromXML(Server.MapPath("list.xml")); SubjectFilter.DataSource = b.BooksList.Select(x => x.Subject).Distinct().ToArray(); SubjectFilter.DataBind(); SubjectFilter.Items.Insert(0, new ListItem("???", "Default")); Everything loads just fine. However in the SubjectFilter_SelectedIndexChanged method, SubjectFilter.SelectedValue is always Default, even though I'm selecting different options. What is the problem? Thank you very much.

    I need to concatenate several columns of a table into a single value, then show that value in an asp dropdownlist. The SQL code I'm issuing is as follows: SELECT UserID, CustomerNum, UserName + ' - ' + UserAddress + ',' + UserCity + ' ' + UserState AS UserInfo FROM Users WHERE (CustomerNum = @CustomerNum) ORDER BY UserName I then set 'UserInfo' as the text field in the dropdownlist. This generally works, except occasionally one of the columns in the database is null (for example, UserState). When that happens, the entire concatenation is null, and I get an empty entry in the dropdownlist. Is there something in SQLServer that will allow me to ignore those NULL results, or will I have to code something up in the DataBind event? Thanks

    hello, i have dropdownlist of year which is coming dynamically.i have filled the dropdownlist using object datasource.on inserting in the listview control it is working fine. but when i click on edit button that dropdownlist value should be set which is coming from the database. e.g. if i have a row which contains Year=2006 and month="Jan" then on click on edit button these dropdown list should be fill up. i have written the code in ItemDataBound to set the value of the dropdownlilst.but when i use findcontrol its taking null so object reference error is coming. so please provide me the solution. thanks samir

    Hello I have a problem with dropdowllist ddl1 that is inside of insertitem of listview. I populate it from table on page load. In Page_load I have: if (!Page.IsPostBack) { ListView1.DataBind(); InsDropDownList3.DataSource = GetAllPlayersName(); InsDropDownList3.DataBind(); } DropDownList ddl1 = (DropDownList)ListView1.InsertItem.FindControl("InsDropDownList1"); if (ddl1 != null) { DataTable t = GetAllPlayersName(); ddl1.DataSource = t; ddl1.DataBind(); } When I select a row in listview or edit it data from dropdownlist in insertitem row disappears - list became empty until I close page and open again. There is another InsDropDownList3 outside of listview and there is no problem with this one. Why one is loosing data and the other one not? As I understand ddl1 should even get data every time page loads.

    Im trying to fill a dropdownlist based on an other one: Departments and SubDepartments. i followed this link: http://www.sharepoint-tips.com/2007/01/infopath-form-services-implementing.html when i try to fill in a form it gives me an error: Request Failed (-- securityException) on this line: q.FileLocation = q.FileLocation + "&FilterField1=Department&FilterValue1=" + GetDepartmentValue(); and the second dropdownlist (subdepartments) is not filtered. Any idea what might be the problem?

    I am quite confused with how to effectively use the Html.DropDownList helper for ASP.NET MVC. Background: I have a 5-page form, which saves data to the form each time "Next" is clicked. Users may navigate back and forth between sections, so previous sections will already be pre-populated with previously-entered data. This works for TextBoxes. But not DropDownLists. However, I sometimes want to set the values of the parent and target from a DB (I want to default them, based on a code entered by the user; the whole thing is wrapped in an update panel). So if the user keys in ABC, I look up ABC in the DB and default the Parent DropDown to ID 10 and Child DropDown to ID 101. However, this fails because the child has no items when the server side code runs (the web script method hasn't run, because the content of the parent dd wasn't changed on the client side) Does anybody know how to work around this?   • Length of a string in pixels

    Guys, I'm populating a dropDownList with arrayCollection of strings. I want the width of the drop down list control to match with the size (in pixels) of the longest string in the array collection. The problem I'm facing is: the font width of the strings in the collection are different e.g. 'W' looks wider than 'l'. So I estimated the width of a character to be 8 pixels but that's not pretty neat. If a string that has many 'W' and 'M' is encountered the estimation is wrong. So I want precise pixel width of strings. How can i get the exact length of a string in pixels??   • Some problems with GridView in webpart with multiple filters.

    Hello, I'm currently working on a highly configurable Database Viewer webpart for WSS 3.0 which we are going to need for several customized sharepoint sites. Sorry in advance for the large wall of text, but i fear it's necessary to recap the whole issue. As background information and to describe my problem as good as possible, I'll start by telling you what the webpart shall do: Basically the webpart contains an UpdatePanel, which contains a GridView and an SqlDataSource. The select-query the Datasource uses can be set via webbrowseable properties or received from a consumer method from another webpart. Now i wanted to add a filtering feature to the webpart, so i want a dropdownlist in the headerrow for each column that should be filterable. As the select-query is completely dynamic and i don't know at design time which columns shall be filterable, i decided to add a webbrowseable property to contain an xml-formed string with filter information. In cbx_PreRender() i check ViewState and select an item in case of a postback. In cbx_DataBound() i just add tooltips to the list items as the dropdownlist has a fixed width. Previously, I used AutoPostback and SelectedIndexChanged of the DDL to filter the grid, but to my disappointment it was not always fired. I don't know if this is ok on this late stage.. don't have a lot of asp.net experience after all. If anyone can suggest a better solution, please give me a hint. This all works great so far, except when i have two or more filters and set them to a combination that returns zero records. Bam ... gridview gone, completely - without a possiblity of changing the filters back. So i googled and found out that i have to subclass gridview in order to always show the headerrow. I found this solution and implemented it with some modifications. The headerrow get's displayed and i can change the filters even if the returned result contains no rows. But finally to my current problem: When i have two or more filters set which return zero rows, and i change back one filter to something that should return rows, the gridview remains empty (although the pager is rendered). I have to completly refresh the page to reset the filters. When debugging, i can see in the overridden CreateChildControls of the grid, that the base method indeed returns 0, but anyway... the gridView.RowCount remains 0 after databinding. Anyone have an idea what's going wrong here?

    Hello, I'm testing some concepts in ASP.NET MVC multisteps (Style Wizards) with a small application which allow me to records organizations in a database. To make things easier, I've a class OrganizationFormModelView that contains an object of class Organization and a property called ParentOrgList of SelectList type. The only purpose of the selectList property is to be used by a DropDownList. I've also serialize OrganizationFormModelView to get the multisteps Wizard effect. In my first view (or first step), I use a dropdownlist helper to assign a value to one of the the Organization's property called ParentOrganization, which draws data from the ParentOrgList. ... <% = Html.DropDownList("Organization.ParentOrganization", Model.ParentOrgList)%> ... The first time the page loads, I'm able to make a choice. And, my choice is reflected in my object Model all along the wizard' steps(see Visual studio in debugging mode). But, when any time I'm redirected back to the first view (first step), I get the following error message: "The ViewData item with the key 'Organization.ParentOrganization' is of type 'System.String' but needs to be of type 'IEnumerable'."     the situation: a user on the page in question selects a category from a dropdown which then dynamically populates all the users of that category in a second dropdown beside it. all the data is being retrieved using LinqtoSQL and i was wondering if this can be done a) using html.dropdownlist in a strongly typed view? b) using jquery to trigger the ajax request on selected index change instead of a 'populate' button trigger? sorry i dont have code as what i was trying really wasnt working at all. I am having trouble with how to do it conceptually and programatically! will appreciate any links to examples etc greatly! thanks in advance!   • ASP.NET DropDownList control doesn't postback correctly inside of UserControl

    I have a situation where a DropDownList control is not posting back correctly. The AutoPost property is set to true, so the postback does happen, but the SelectedValue is not set to the correct value. In addition, the onSelectedIndexChanged event doesn't fire. The exact same code works perfect fine on an ASPX page, but does not work in a ASCX control. I have tried all the obvious things, I hope, trying to figure this one out, but no luck so far. I have even investigated what comes back in Request.Form["__EVENTTARGET"] and __EVENTARGUMENT. __EVENTTARGET does point to the drop down list, but the argument is empty. Can the folks of StackOverflow help lead me in the right direction to debug this issue. Of course, it is further complicated by master pages and the usual overcomplication of ASP.NET.   • Error when using jquery webservice call to populate dropdownlist

    In my controller i am returning list of my object with specific property: public ActionResult Index() { List<MyObject> list = db.MyObjects.Where(x => x.family == "Web").ToList(); ViewBag.Files = new SelectList(list, "Id", "protocol"); return View(); } This is my object: public class MyObject { public int id { get; set; } public string fileName { get; set; } public string browser { get; set; } public string protocol { get; set; } public string family { get; set; } } Index.cshtml: @Html.DropDownList("File", new SelectList(ViewBag.Files, "Id", "protocol_site"), "Select webmail site", new { style = "vertical-align:middle;" }) And i try to made 2 changes with no succeed: Remove all the duplication protocol from my DropDownListfor exapmle if i have 10 objects : 9 is doc protocol and 1 pdf i wand to see in my DropDownList only 2 items: DOC and PDF and not all the 10 items. Sort this DropDownList in alphabet order
