• How do I Benchmark RESTful Service with Variable Parameters?

  I'm currently working on benchmarking a RESTful service I've made, and part of that is making sure it runs in a reasonable amount of times for a large array of parameters. For example, let's say I have RESTful API of the form some_site.com/item?item_id=y. In that case to be sure my service is working as fast as I'd like it to work, I'd want to try out many values for y one by one, preferably coming from some text file. I can't figure out any way of doing this in ab or httperf. I'm open to using a different benchmarking program if I have, but would prefer something simple and light. What I want to do seems like something pretty standard, so I'm guessing there must already be a program that let's me do it, but an hour or so of googling hasn't gotten me an answer. Ideas?

• Replacing text with a link in jQuery

  I'm trying to replace a small part of text in a large HTML document with my own element which I create on the fly. The text may be a huge bulk of text, html, images, what-ever, and what I want is to find the first (or all) the position of a certain string, and replace it with an element that I create using $('< span'). Using simple text.replace('the string', $('< span')); doesn't do the trick (I'm left with [object Object] and not the actual < span that I want. The reason I don't just inject direct HTML is because I want to retain all the binds that are related to the object I'm creating. and doing a replace with a custom ID, and then attaching binds to the ID after the HTML has been altered, seems a bit dirty. • Using sortable_element in Rails on a list generated by a find()

  Hey all, I'm trying to use the scriptaculous helper method sortable_element to implement a drag-and-drop sortable list in my Rails application. While the code for the view looks pretty simple, I'm really not quite sure what to write in the controller to update the "position" column. Here's what I've got in my view, "_show_related_pgs.erb": <ul id = "interest_<%=@related_interest.id.to_s%>_siblings_list"> <%= render :partial => "/interests/peer_group_map", :collection => @maps, :as => :related_pg %> </ul> <%= sortable_element("interest_"+@related_interest.id.to_s+"_siblings_list", :url => {:action => :resort_related_pgs}, :handle => "drag" ) %> <br/> And here's the relevant line from the partial, "interests/peer_group_map.erb" <li class = "interest_<%=@related_interest.id.to_s%>_siblings_list" id = "interest_<%=related_pg.interest_id.to_s%>_siblings_list_<%=related_pg.id.to_s%>"> The Scriptaculous UI magic works fine with these, but I am unsure as to how to change the "position" column in the db to reflect this. Should I be passing the collection @maps back to the controller and tell it to iterate through that and increment/decrement the attribute "position" in each? If so, how can I tell which item was moved up, and which down? I couldn't find anything specific using Chrome dev-tools in the generated html. After each reordering, I also need to re-render the collection @maps since the position is being printed out next to the name of each interest (I'm using it as the "handle" specified in my call to sortable_element() above) - though this should be trivial.   Hi all, In considering several possible solutions to a recent task, I found myself considering how to get a php file that includes it's own MD5 hash. I ended up doing something else, but the question stayed with me. Something along the lines of: <?php echo("Hello, my MD5 is [MD5 OF THIS FILE HERE]"); ?> Whatever placeholder you have in the file, the second you take its MD5 and insert it, you've changed it.

• How Can I Run a Regex that Tests Text for Characters in a Particular Alphabet or Script?

  I'd like to make a regex in Perl that will test a string for a characters in a particular string. This would be something like: $text =~ .*P{'Chinese'}.* Is there a simple way of doing this, for English it's pretty easy by just testing for [a-zA-Z], but for a script like Chinese, or one of the Japanese scripts, I can't figure out any way of doing this short of writing out every character explicitly, which would make for some very ugly code. Ideas? I can't be the first/only person that's wanted to do this.

  In the default email client in Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, how can arbitrary files(.zip, .mp3, .txt, .pdf etc) be attached. As the storage is sand-boxed, the file handler can implement hooks to the email client, as MS-Office does and Adobe Reader doesn't, but the email client can not access files in the Phone's storage. Is there a way, or a work around? I my usage pattern, I tend to send a lot of pdfs, and am unable to do that!

• Environment naming standards in software development?

  My project is currently suffering from environment naming issues. Different people have different assumptions as to what environments should be named or what the names designate, and it's causing confusion when discussing them. I've done a bit of research and I haven't found any standards out there. The terms include "Local", "Sand", "Dev", "Test", "User", "QA", "Staging" and "Prod" (plus a few more that different people have asked about) I'm not looking for just opinions, though if there's one out there that "everyone" has I'll take it - I'm trying to find definitions advanced by some sort of authority, even if it's unofficial. Here's the environments we currently use: Environment on the developer's PC Shared Environment where developers directly upload code to self-test Shared Environment where standards and functionality are tested by QA people Shared Environment where completed and QA-checked code is approved by project requesters Environment that mirrors the final environment as a final check and to prepare for deployment Final Environment where code is in use I know what I'd call them, but is there some sort of standard on this? • Compiz and Clearlooks window border breaks active/inactive title bars

  When I turn on Compiz with the Compiz tray switcher and I use Clearlooks, Dust Sand, or possibly any title bar style that normally has window icons on right, some window title bars will not change. Instead, they stay selected or unselected randomly. Some windows, like Ubuntu Software Center and CCSM are unaffected. This problem only happens with GTK window manager. I am using the Malteworld compiz ppa for Emerald. The problem does not happen with plain Metacity, or a title bar style that normally has close button on right. Edit: It still happens with Emerald. Reinstalled with upgrade option (yeah, 11.04 to 11.04) and still same problem. So maybe faulty package?

• How to create reproducible probability in map generation?

  So for my game, I'm using perlin noise to generate regions of my map (water/land, forest/grass) but I'd also like to create some probability based generation too. For instance: if(nextInt(10) > 2 && tile.adjacentTo(Type.WATER)) tile.setType(Type.SAND); This works fine, and is even reproduceable (based on a common seed) if the nextInt() calls are always in the same order. The issue is that in my game, the world is generated on demand, based on the player's location. This means, that if I explore the map differently, and the chunks of the map are generated in a different order, the randomness is no longer consistent. How can I get this sort of randomness to be consistent, independent of call order? Thanks in advance :)

  In the coming months we're going to begin a project where we take a system we've built for a client (v1) and rebuild it from scratch. Our goal with v2 is to make it modular, so that this specific client will have their own set of modules they use, then another client may use a different set of modules altogether. The trick here is that Company A might have a series of checkout and user modules that change how that system works. Company B might stick with the standard checkout procedure but customize how products are browsed. What are some good approaches to application architecture when you're building an application from scratch that you want to have a Core that's shared among all clients while still maintaining the flexability for anything to be modified specifically for a client? I've seen CodeIgniter's hooks and don't think that's a good solution as we could end up with 250 hooks and it's still not flexible enough. What are some other solutions? Ideally we won't need to draw a line in the sand.
