• 12.04: Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). I have a working form for users to sign up to the site - create a username and password. I use jQuery to send an AJAX POST request to the CherryPy which queries the database to see if that username exists. If the username exists, alert the user, if it doesn't, add it to the database and alert success. $.post('submit', postdata, function(data) { alert(data); }); Successful jQuery POST. I want to change the form so that instead of checking that the username exists on submit, a GET request is made as on the blur event from the username input.   Situation: I want to return a 404 page ("404.php") when a folder ("hidden") is accessed from the example.com domain. I want the same folder to be accessible from a subdomain ("hidden.example.com") or from a different domain ("hidden.com") which are both configured in a single VirtualHost entry. The server has multiple IP addresses that it listens on. Each IP address serves identical content from the example.com domain (sharing a VirtualHost entry.) I want the folder to be accessible from the IP address. The server is configured to use SSL/TLS/HTTPS. HTTPS is optional on example.com, but HTTPS is enforced in the .htaccess file for the hidden folder using a rewrite rule shown below. /www/hidden/.htaccess RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule .* https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L] I know that {SERVER_ADDR} gives the server's IP address, but does it return the one that the client is requesting from? • IIS: 404 error on every file in a virtual directory.

  I am trying to write my first WCF service for IIS 6.0. I followed the instructions on MSDN. I created the virtual directory, I can browse the directory fine but anything I click (even a sub-folder in that folder) gives me a 404 error. What am I missing that I can not access any files or folders? Any logs or whatnot you need just tell me where to find them in the comments and I will post them. Use the IIS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to enable the appropriate Web extension. Default Web Extensions include: ASP, ASP.net, Server-Side Includes, WebDAV publishing, FrontPage Server Extensions, Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Custom extensions must be added and explicitly enabled. See the IIS 6.0 Help File for more information. I am guessing the 404 0 2 at the end of the log is a 404.2 error. I now know the why, I still don't know the how on how to fix it.

After research, it's because my dataType is 'json' so 404 return is HTML and the JSON parsing failed. So no callback. Have you a solution to call a callback function when a 404 is raised ?   This question is related to this, hopefully better phrased. I would like to serve a custom 404 page from ASP.NET MVC. I have the route handler and all the infrastructure set up to ensure that nonexistent routes are handled by a single action: public ActionResult Handle404() { Response.StatusCode = 404; return View("NotFound"); } Problem: IIS serves back its own content (some predefined message) when I set Response.StatusCode to 404 before returning the content. On the VS development web server, this works as intended - the status code of the HTTP response is 404 while my content (the NotFound view) is served. I believe that when the IIS processing pipeline sees that the application returns 404, it simply replaces the whole response with its own. What setting in IIS affects this behavior? I do not have access to the IIS installation so I can not investigate this - however, I can ask the hosting provider to tweak the configuration for me if I know what exactly needs to be changed.

Using ASP.NET Web API framework, you can create HTTP services which can be accessed from browsers, machines, mobile devices and other clients. Developing HTTP services is now become more easy for ASP.NET MVC developer becasue ASP.NET Web API is now included in ASP.NET MVC. In addition to developing HTTP services, it is also important to return meaningful response to client if a resource(uri) not found(HTTP 404) for a reason(for example, mistyped resource uri). It is also important to make this response centralized so you can configure all of 'HTTP 404 Not Found' resource at one place. In this article, I will show you how to handle 'HTTP 404 Not Found' at one place.         Description:                     Let's say that you are developing a HTTP RESTful application using ASP.NET Web API framework. In this application you need to handle HTTP 404 errors in a centralized location. From ASP.NET Web API point of you, you need to handle these situations, No route matched. Route is matched but no {controller} has been found on route. No type with {controller} name has been found. No matching action method found in the selected controller due to no action method start with the request HTTP method verb or no action method with IActionHttpMethodProviderRoute implemented attribute found or no method with {action} name found or no method with the matching {action} name found.                                          Now, let create a ErrorController with Handle404 action method. This action method will be used in all of the above cases for sending HTTP 404 response message to the client.  public class ErrorController : ApiController { [HttpGet, HttpPost, HttpPut, HttpDelete, HttpHead, HttpOptions, AcceptVerbs("PATCH")] public HttpResponseMessage Handle404() { var responseMessage = new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.NotFound); responseMessage.ReasonPhrase = "The requested resource is not found"; return responseMessage; } }                     You can easily change the above action method to send some other specific HTTP 404 error response. • Is it possible to use two different ErrorDocuments for different paths of a website?

  this is my first question on stackexchange and it might be a bit confusing. I currently run PmWiki (sorry, you'll have to google it, new user can only have 2 hyperlinks) at mydomain.com/pmwiki. I have a 404 page and .htaccess set up in my site's document root for 404 pages regarding anything that doesn't have to do with my wiki. By default, PmWiki handles URLs a little confusingly so I had to use this in order to get it to look like mydomain.com/pmwiki/Namespace/Page I had to create a .htaccess in /pmwiki to remove parts of the URL. PmWiki also has a custom 404 (Site/PageNotFound) page that has stopped working, now my site uses the /404.htm page. I noticed this when trying to install this "recipe" to enable case-insensitive URLs. Currently the only way to access Site/PageNotFound is by actually linking to it, and, if you read how that recipe seems to function, this is an issue. Currently mydomain.com/pmwiki/blahblah and mydomain.com/pmwiki/legitimate_namespace_but_lowercase/legitimate_lowercase_page_name both direct to mydomain.com/404.htm. I have to admit I'm very confused, and I apologize if I was unclear in any of this, but I could definitely use some help. Thanks!

• SEO redirects for removed pages

  Hi, Apologies if SO is not the right place for this, but there are 700+ other SEO questions on here. I'm a senior developer for a travel site with 12k+ pages. We completely redeveloped the site and relaunched in January, and with the volatile nature of travel, there are many pages which are no longer on the site. Examples: /destinations/africa/senegal.aspx /destinations/africa/features.aspx Of course, we have a 404 page in place (and it's a hard 404 page rather than a 30x redirect to a 404). Our SEO advisor has asked us to 30x redirect all our 404 pages (as found in Webmaster Tools), his argument being that 404's are damaging to our pagerank. He'd want us to redirect our Senegal and features pages above to the Africa page (which doesn't contain the content previously found on Senegal.aspx or features.aspx). An equivalent for SO would be taking a url for a removed question and redirecting it to /questions rather than showing a 404 'Question/Page not found'. My argument is that, as these pages are no longer on the site, 404 is the correct status to return. I'd also argue that redirecting these to less relevant pages could damage our SEO (due to duplicate content perhaps)? It's also very time consuming redirecting all 404's when our site takes some content from our in-house system, which adds/removes content at will. Thanks for any advice, Adam

• IIS: 404 error on every file in a virtual directory.

  I am trying to write my first WCF service for IIS 6.0. I followed the instructions on MSDN. I created the virtual directory, I can browse the directory fine but anything I click (even a sub-folder in that folder) gives me a 404 error. What am I missing that I can not access any files or folders? Any logs or whatnot you need just tell me where to find them in the comments and I will post them.   We are setting up an online payment facility using a payment gateway. After the payment gateway finishes processing the credit card details for a payment, the user is redirected to a "403 Forbidden" page. The logs show: [MY_IP_ADDRESS_HERE] - - [SOME_DATE_HERE] "GET /POSTBACK_URL.php?txnid=1338434567&result=failure&reason=The+remote+server+returned+an+error%3a+(404)+Not+Found.&digest=7a115270c56df5945c43ad86e56b2e930a3cfd50 HTTP/1.1" 404 - "PAYMENT_GATEWAY_URL_HERE" "BROWSER_DETAILS_HERE" It means that when the PAYMENT_GATEWAY_URL attempts to open our POSTBACK_URL, it gets a 404 error, is that correct? But why does the page say "403 Forbidden"? Anyway, we tried to copy-paste that same URL into the browser window, and the page is opened successfully, with our programmed error notification message. So, why couldn't it be opened when the payment gateway tried to redirect to it, but we could? Is this some sort of permissions issue? If so, the postback URL's file permissions are already 755. What am I missing?

We can use HTTP headers Expires or Cache-Control:max-age to cache content on client browser and set expiry time for them. Expire header is HTTP/1.0 standard and Cache-Control:max-age is introduced in HTTP/1.1 specification to solve the issues and limitation with Expire  header. Consider the following headers.   Cache-Control: max-age=24560 Expires: Tue, 15 May 2012 06:17:00 GMT The first header instructs web browsers to cache the content for 24560 seconds relative to the time the content is downloaded and expire it after the time period elapses. The second header instructs web browser to expiry the content after 15th May 2011 06:17. Out of these two options which one to use – max-age or expires? I prefer max-age header for the following reasons As max-age  is a relative value and in most of the cases it makes sense to set relative expiry date rather than an absolute expiry date. Expire  header values are complex to set – time format should be proper, time zones should be appropriate. Even a small mistake in settings these values results in unexpected behaviour. As Expire header values are absolute, we need to  keep changing them at regular intervals. Lets say if we set 2011 June 1 as expiry date to all the image files of this blog, on 2011 June 2 we should modify the expiry date to something like 2012 Jan 1. This add burden of managing the Expire headers. • Google webmastertools soft 404 - How to update google search after updating it to 200

  My site has many modules which are indexed by google. Recently there has been a database problem so the site was not appearing well like many links returned 404 i think. Now i have make it working and all the content what previously google indexed are as it were. How do we update google that i have corrected and the pages which sent 404 are not 200? That is now i wanted to tell google that the urls which sent 404 are now working fine so that google will update it soon before it removes from its database.
