  • Fastest way to compute a "Visual" checksum of an image

    - by ensnare
I'm looking to create an ID system for cataloging images. I can't use md5() since that will change if I alter the EXIF tags of the image. I am currently using the SHA1 checksum computed by imagemagick. It works perfectly, but it's really, really slow on larger images (~15 seconds on a quad-core xeon for a 21 megapixel JPG). Are there any other "visual" methods of uniquely identifying an image that would be faster? Thank you.

  • How to adjust and combine multiple lower quality photos into one better using FOSS?

    - by Vi
I have multiple noisy photos (caputed without tripod) that needs to be adjusted (moved/rotated) and averaged. How it's better to do it in Linux with FOSS console-based programs? Current way is something like: mplayer mf://*.JPG -vo yuv4mpeg:file=qqq.yuv transcode -i qqq.yuv -y null -J stabilize=maxshift=500:fieldsize=100:fieldnum=6:stepsize=50:shakiness=10 transcode -i qqq.yuv -J transform=smoothing=100000:sharpen=0:optzoom=0 -y raw -o www.yuv mplayer www.yuv -vo pnm gm convert -average 0*.ppm q.ppm i.e.: Convert photos to video Apply Transcode's "Stabilize" filter Convert the video back to images Average the images. It works, but bad: photos still not perfectly adjusted and the whole sequence is very slow. What is better way of doing it?

  • How can I deskew and crop PDFs made from scanned pages *automatically*? [closed]

    - by Pietro M.
I have several PDFs made up of book pages' scans. The scans are made from two pages at a time and some of these scans are skewed, making text appear slightly tilted. I'm looking for a tool that could allow me to do an automatic optimization by deskewing the scans without losing readability. I've found the GPL software briss to crop the scans in order to have a 1:1 page ratio instead of 2:1, but I don't have any tool to deskew the pages. I stumbled upon unpaper, another open source tool that seems perfect for what I want to do, but that tool is Linux only and it doesn't work on PDF files directly. Any hint is appreciated.

  • Convert a gray PNG with alpha to a 1-bit black rectanble with 8-bit alpha

    - by jcayzac
I use a tool to render LaTeX equations as PNG. The resulting images are in RGBA8888 format. I would like to extract the luminance (grayscale from RGB channels, multiplied by the A channel) as my new alpha channel, set the picture fully black, and save the result in Gray1Alpha8 (G1A8) format. So far I've only managed to get G1A4 or G8A8 but not G1A8. Also, the resulting picture looks like it's not multiplied correctly… convert original.png \ \( -clone 0 -alpha extract \) \ \( -clone 0 -clone 1 -compose multiply -composite \) \ -delete 0 +swap -alpha off -compose copy_opacity -composite -colorspace Gray -depth 4 result.png What am I missing?

  • Gif output not as smooth when selecting a sequence of files individually

    - by Keikoku
I have a sequence of images 001.png 002.png 003.png that I would like to combine into an animation. I used the following command convert -dispose 3 -loop 0 *.png out.gif And it looks ok. However, when I tried this convert -dispose 3 -loop 0 "001.png" "002.png" "003.png" out2.gif out2.gif was not as "smooth" as out.gif. Why is there a difference in the output between the two commands, which seem to mean the same thing?

  • Trying to install Rmagick on Debian

    - by Janak
One of things you need to do to get Rmagick installed apt-get install libmagick9-dev When I try that I get the following errors Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • converting a png with an ICC profile?

    - by jedierikb
I can convert a jpg from one ICC to another ICC. convert rgb_image.jpg -profile USCoat.icm cmyk_image.jpg Or I can convert a jpg with no ICC to another ICC. convert rgb_image.jpg +profile icm \ -profile sRGB.icc -profile USCoat.icm cmyk_image.jpg But how do I convert a png's pixels into the gamut described by an ICC profile? I understand I cannot embed the profile into the image file, but would at least like to convert the colors. When I reuse the above commands, the colors come out wrong... (different from the colors in the JPG when converted). This is the source image: http://alumni.media.mit.edu/~erikb/tmp/RED_JPG.jpg And here is what I am trying: convert RED_JPG.jpg +profile icm -profile sRGB_v4_ICC_preference.icc -profile USWebUncoated.icc CMYK_PNG.png and this is what I am getting: http://alumni.media.mit.edu/~erikb/tmp/CMYK_PNG.png I was hoping to get an image with the same colors as a JPEG run through the same command: convert RED_JPG.jpg +profile icm -profile sRGB_v4_ICC_preference.icc -profile USWebUncoated.icc CMYK_JPG.jpg resulting in: http://alumni.media.mit.edu/~erikb/tmp/CMYK_JPG.jpg *this image, CMYK_JPG.jpg, is what I am trying to reproduce pixel by pixel in a PNG file.* Any suggestions? • Is is better to combine Apache for file manipulation and upload and Nginx for static file serving, or to use one of the two alone

    - by user1032393
Based on my research, I've read that nginx is best and ideal for serving up static files and images. My application depends heavily on uploading of images and rewriting them, then serving them up. Given that I only have one VPS currently, it has been suggested that I use nginx to serve up the images and website, and reverse proxy to Apache (on the same VPS) to rewrite files with image magick and handle the file uploads. Which would be the best solution, Apache, Nginx, or Apache + Nginx? In terms of best solution, I'm looking at minimal average RAM consumption, while maintaining decent load speed of maybe sub 2 seconds?

  • Batch convert Malformed PDFs to TIF on Linux

    - by Mike Driscoll
I need to convert a multipage PDF to TIF, but it appears to be a malformed PDF provided by our client. I tried using ImageMagick and GhostScript, but they do not convert the file correctly. The result is only about 85-90% correct. The only thing I've found that appears to do the job is GIMP, but I can't find an example to use it via its Batch Processing methods for PDFs. • How can I convert .eps files to .jpg in ASP.NET?

    - by Mike C
I am trying to convert uploaded .eps files to .jpg in my ASP.net application and I am having a hard time finding a .net library that will let me do this. I have tried using the ImageMagick libraries, but I don't have root access to the server in order to install the standard binaries, or run the command line executables. I have also tried the slightly modified project from CodeProject, but it was designed in VS2005 and I have VS2008 and 2010 and I think I run into some compatibility issues while trying to compile and execute the project. Is there a simpler solution available that just works natively in .NET? Thanks, Mike

  • How to remove EXIF data without recompressing the JPEG?

    - by Denilson Sá
I want to remove the EXIF information (including thumbnail, metadata, camera info... everything!) from JPEG files, but I don't want to recompress it, as recompressing the JPEG will degrade the quality, as well as usually increasing the file size. I'm looking for a Unix/Linux solution, even better if using the command-line. If possible, using ImageMagick (convert tool). If that's not possible, a small Python, Perl, PHP (or other common language on Linux) script would be ok. There is a similar question, but related to .net.

  • What's the best graphics library for node.js for image cropping?

    - by Travis
I'm creating a website using node.js. I have seen many libraries mentioned that piggy back on top of imagemagick etc. There is a list here: https://github.com/ry/node/wiki/modules#graphics What I'm trying to do is take the image that a user uploads, crop it/size it to certain dimensions the site requires. What is the best/most active script to do this? I'd like one with npm support. Does anyone have actual experience using some of these?

  • How do I turn a PDF email attachment to an image (jpg) in a PHP page?

    - by user351630
Hi guys. Long time viewer, first time question asker. I'm trying to have my personal website parse through my mail box for attachments from a certain subscription list, and then be able to view the PDF attachments as images, preferably jpg. With the help of this: http://www.linuxscope.net/articles/mailAttachmentsPHP.html I'm currently using imap_base64() to decode the MIME data and create the PDF. However, I hate using PDF readers in general and I thought it would be a lot more streamlined if I could just view it as an image instead. I've heard for convert with ImageMagick, but would I need to actually write the PDF to a directory before using this, or can I convert somehow directly from the MIME data in the email? Thanks in advanced!

  • In a digital photo, how can I detect if a mountain is obscured by clouds?

    - by Gavin Brock
The problem I have a collection of digital photos of a mountain in Japan. However the mountain is often obscured by clouds or fog. What techniques can I use to detect that the mountain is visible in the image? I am currently using Perl with the Imager module, but open to alternatives. All the images are taken from the exact same position - these are some samples. My naïve solution I started by taking several horizontal pixel samples of the mountain cone and comparing the brightness values to other samples from the sky. This worked well for differentiating good image 1 and bad image 2. However in the autumn it snowed and the mountain became brighter than the sky, like image 3, and my simple brightness test started to fail. Image 4 is an example of an edge case. I would classify this as a good image since some of the mountain is clearly visible. UPDATE 1 Thank you for the suggestions - I am happy you all vastly over-estimated my competence. Based on the answers, I have started trying the ImageMagick edge-detect transform, which gives me a much simpler image to analyze. convert sample.jpg -edge 1 edge.jpg I assume I should use some kind of masking to get rid of the trees and most of the clouds. Once I have the masked image, what is the best way to compare the similarity to a 'good' image? I guess the "compare" command suited for this job? How do I get a numeric 'similarity' value from this?

  • PythonMagickWand Shepards Distortion (ctypes LP_c_double problem)

    - by betamax
I am trying to use PythonMagickWand to use a Shepards distortion on an image. You can also see the source of distort.c that is used by ImageMagick. I have the following code (snippet): from PythonMagickWand import * arrayType = c_double * 8 pointsNew = arrayType() pointsNew[0] = c_double(eyeLeft[0]) pointsNew[1] = c_double(eyeLeft[1]) pointsNew[2] = c_double(eyeLeftDest[0]) pointsNew[3] = c_double(eyeLeftDest[1]) pointsNew[4] = c_double(eyeRight[0]) pointsNew[5] = c_double(eyeRight[1]) pointsNew[6] = c_double(eyeRightDest[0]) pointsNew[7] = c_double(eyeRightDest[1]) MagickWandGenesis() wand = NewMagickWand() MagickReadImage(wand,path_to_image+'image_mod.jpg') MagickDistortImage(wand,ShepardsDistortion, 8, pointsNew, False) MagickWriteImage(wand,path_to_image+'image_mod22.jpg') I get the following error: MagickDistortImage(wand,ShepardsDistortion, 8, pointsNew, False) ctypes.ArgumentError: argument 4: <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: expected LP_c_double instance instead of list I am aware that pointsNew is the wrong way of providing the arguments.. But I just don't know what is the right format. This is an example distort command that works when run in Terminal: convert image.jpg -virtual-pixel Black -distort Shepards 121.523809524,317.79638009 141,275 346.158730159,312.628959276 319,275 239.365079365,421.14479638 232,376 158.349206349,483.153846154 165,455 313.015873016,483.153846154 300,455 0,0 0,0 0,571.0 0,571.0 464.0,571.0 464.0,571.0 0,571.0 0,571.0 image_out.jpg So I guess the question is: How do I create a list of c_doubles that will be accepted by PythonMagickWand? I basically need to re-create the terminal command. I have got it working by using subprocess to run the command from Python but that is not how I want to do it.

  • Create image from scratch with JMagick

    - by Michael IV
I am using Java port of ImageMagick called JMagick .I need to be able to create a new image and write an arbitrary text chunk into it.The docs are very poor and what I managed to get so far is to write text into the image which comes from IO.Also , in all the examples I have found it seems like the very first operation ,before writing new image data , is always loading of an existing image into ImageInfo instance. How do I create an image from scratch with JMagick and then write a text into it? Here is what I do now : try { ImageInfo info = new ImageInfo(); info.setSize("512x512"); info.setUnits(ResolutionType.PixelsPerInchResolution); info.setColorspace(ColorspaceType.RGBColorspace); info.setBorderColor(PixelPacket.queryColorDatabase("red")); info.setDepth(8); BufferedImage img = new BufferedImage(512,512,BufferedImage.TYPE_4BYTE_ABGR); byte[] imageBytes = ((DataBufferByte) img.getData().getDataBuffer()).getData(); MagickImage mimage = new MagickImage(info, imageBytes); DrawInfo aInfo = new DrawInfo(info); aInfo.setFill(PixelPacket.queryColorDatabase("green")); aInfo.setUnderColor(PixelPacket.queryColorDatabase("yellow")); aInfo.setOpacity(0); aInfo.setPointsize(36); aInfo.setFont("Arial"); aInfo.setTextAntialias(true); aInfo.setText("JMagick Tutorial"); aInfo.setGeometry("+40+40"); mimage.annotateImage(aInfo); mimage.setFileName("text.jpg"); mimage.writeImage(info); } catch (MagickException ex) { Logger.getLogger(LWJGL_IDOMOO_SIMPLE_TEST.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } It doesn't work , the JVM crashes with access violation as it probably expects for the input image from IO.

  • Can't get gravity to work with RMagick and 'caption'

    - by mph
I'm using RMagick 2.12.2 with ImageMagick 6.5.6-10 on Snow Leopard. I'm trying to put captions on a collection of photos, and I'm getting the caption to work (i.e. it appears on the image), but I can't get the gravity parameter to work correctly. No matter what I set it to, I end up with some variation on NorthGravity. For instance: Setting it to SouthWestGravity gives me NorthWestGravity. Setting it to SouthEastGravity gives me NorthEastGravity. Setting it to CenterGravity gives me NorthGravity. In other words, I can't get the caption to come down off the top of the image. I'd consider using "annotate," but I need "caption" so the lengthy caption text for each image will wrap. What am I doing wrong? Here's the code: #!/usr/bin/env ruby require "rubygems" require "yaml" require "RMagick" include Magick base_dir = "/Users/mike/Desktop/caption_test" photo_log = File.open("#{base_dir}/photo_log.yaml" ) YAML::load_documents(photo_log) do |doc| caption = doc["photo-caption"] filename = doc["file"] canvas = ImageList.new.from_blob(open("#{base_dir}/#{filename}") { |f| f.read } ) canvas << Magick::Image.read("caption:#{caption}") { self.gravity = SouthWestGravity self.size = "#{canvas.first.columns}" self.font = "Helvetica Neue" self.pointsize = 12 self.background_color = "#fff" }.first canvas.flatten_images.write("#{base_dir}/images/#{filename}") end

  • Converting Source ASCII Files to JPEGs

    - by CommonsWare
I publish technical books, in print, PDF, and Kindle/MOBI, with EPUB on the way. The Kindle does not support monospace fonts, which are kinda useful for source code listings. The only way to do monospace fonts is to convert the text (Java source, HTML, XML, etc.) into JPEG images. More specifically, due to pagination issues, a given input ASCII file needs to be split into slices of ~6 lines each, with each slice turned into a JPEG, so listings can span a screen. This is a royal pain. My current mechanism to do that involves: Running expand to set a consistent 2-space tab size, which pipes to... a2ps, which pipes to... A small Perl snippet to add a "%%LanguageLevel: 3\n" line, which pipes to... ImageMagick's convert, to take the (E)PS and make a JPEG out it, with an appropriate background, cropped to 575x148+5+28, etc. That used to work 100% of the time. It now works 95% of the time. The rest of the time, I get convert: geometry does not contain image errors, which I cannot seem to get rid of, in part because I don't understand what the problem is. Before this process, I used to use a pretty-print engine (source-highlight) to get HTML out of the source code...but then the only thing I could find to convert the HTML into JPEGs was to automate screen-grabs from an embedded Gecko engine. Reliability stank, which is why I switched to my current mechanism. So, if you were you, and you needed to turn source listings into JPEG images, in an automated fashion, how would you do it? Bonus points if it offers some sort of pretty-print process (e.g., bolded keywords)! Or, if you know what typically causes convert: geometry does not contain image, that might help. My current process is ugly, but if I could get it back to 100% reliability, that'd be just fine for now. Thanks in advance!
