  • Validating User Input? C#

    - by Alex
Hi, in an assignment, I have designed a input validation loop in C#, and I would like it to be able to check for the correct input format. I'm not for sure, but I think my designed loop is not checking the type of input, just what char is entered. I know I could use a try-catch block, but shouldn't you only use exceptions for exceptional situations? This is not an exceptional situation, because I expect that the user would enter an incorrect value. Input validation is not part of my assignment, so the loop is in a homework assignment, but is not part of the homework assignment. Question: Is there a way I could redesign this loop so that it checks for valid input type as well? Code: do { Console.Write("Do you wish to enter another complex number?: (Y or N)"); response = char.Parse(Console.ReadLine()); response = char.ToUpper(response); if (response != 'Y' && response != 'N') Console.WriteLine("You must respond Y or N!"); } while (response != 'Y' && response != 'N'); Thanks!!

  • Output to console while preserving user input in ruby

    - by CaptnCraig
I have a ruby script that is simultaneously and asynchronously receiving and displaying messages from a server, and allowing user input on the console. When a message is received, it is currently being written in the middle of what the user is typing. The input itself isn't garbled, but it looks horrible. Ideally, it would save the users current input, output the message, and then restore the input on the next line. I've done this in c by intercepting every key stroke, but all I remember is that it was a major hassle. I'm fairly new to ruby, so I'm not sure if there is a good way to do this, or how to do it. Example: User is typing >abcde, and message hello comes in, and user types fgh after. The console would now show: >abcdehellofgh and user can continue typing at the end. I would like it to show: hello >abcdefgh

  • Keyboard input with timeout in Python

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
How would you prompt the user for some input but timing out after N seconds? Google is pointing to a mail thread about it at http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-list/2006-January/533215.html but it seems not to work. The statement in which the timeout happens, no matter whether it is a sys.input.readline or timer.sleep(), I always get: <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: [raw_]input expected at most 1 arguments, got 2 which somehow the except fails to catch.

  • $_POST goes empty after adding a new input type "file"

    - by heldrida
Hi, I'm not finding a way to understand and fix this and I've done a lot. I've got a script, wish is a simple form, that sends a file trough POST. The second file, process the info. By default, I give to the user a few fields, one of them being a input field of type "file" and there's also, a few "hidden" one's, that gives me values to work with on POST. I found that, when adding a new input of type "file", the $_POST returns array 0, even $_FILES returns nothing. I have no idea how to fix this, and it works just fine when keeping the default input box of type "file". This is the form http://pastie.org/872488 This only happens when: Exists! var_dump( $_POST ), or $_FILES, print_r(), etc Returns nothing. I've tryed to create a array on the input of type "files", like img_p_child[], but nothing. How to solve this ? Thanks for taking your time!

  • Cloning input type file and set the value

    - by jribeiro
I know that it isn't possible to set the value of an input type="file" for security reasons... My problem is: I needed to style an input type="file" so what I did was have a button and hide the file input. like: <a href="#" onclick="$('input[name=&quot;photo1&quot;]').click(); return false;" id="photo1-link"></a> <input type="file" name="photo1" class="fileInput jqtranformdone validate[required]" id="photo1" /> These works great in all browsers except IE which gives me an access denied error on submitting through ajax. I'm using the ajaxSubmit jquery plugin (malsup.com/jquery/form/) So after reading for a while I tried to do: var photo1Val = $('#photo1').val(); var clone1 = $('#photo1').clone().val(photo1Val); $('#photo1').remove(); clone1.appendTo('form'); console.log(photo1Val) //prints the right value C:/fakepath/blablabla.jpg $('form').ajaxSubmit(options); The problem is that after this the value of $('#photo1') is empty... Any ideas how to work around this? Thanks

  • How to change this C++ code to make input work better

    - by Phenom
cout << "Input street number: "; cin >> streetnum; cout << "Input street name: "; cin >> streetname; cout << "Input resource name: "; cin >> rName; cout << "Input architectural style: "; cin >> aStyle; cout << "Input year built: "; cin >> year; The problem with the above code happens if you enter in spaces between words. For example if I enter "Ampitheater Parkway" for streetname, then it puts "Ampitheater" in streetname, skips the prompt for resource name and enters "Parkway" into the next field. How can I fix this?

  • Accessing the value of an input element with XPath in an XSLT

    - by asymmetric
    Hi! I'm developing a web app that has a button that triggers an XSLT transformation of the document DOM, with a stylesheet fetched via AJAX. Here's a portion of the HTML: <html> <head> <title>Static Javascript-based XMR Form Creator</title> </head> <body> <h1 id="title">Static Javascript-based XMR Form Creator</h1> <div class="opt_block" id="main_opts"> Form name <input type="text" id="form_name" /> Form cols <input type="text" id="form_cols" size="3" maxlength="3" /> </div> <button id="generate">Generate source</button> <textarea rows="20" cols="50" id="xmr_source" ></textarea> </body> Inside the stylesheet, I want to access the value attribute of the first input field, the one with id form_name. The XSLT looks like this: <xsl:template match="/html/body/div[@id = 'main_opts']" > <form> <xsl:attribute name="fname"> <xsl:value-of select="input[@id = 'form_name']/@value" /> </xsl:attribute> </form> </xsl:template> The problem is that the XPath that should do the work: <xsl:value-of select="input[@id = 'form_name']/@value" /> returns nothing. Can anyone help?

  • Running a Java program with input from a file

    - by Katy
I am writing a program that reads the input from a file and then prints it to the screen. When I run it without taking the input from the file, it works perfectly fine. However, every time I try to run it from the file it gives me an "Exception in thread "main" java.util.NoSuchElementException: No line found at" error that occurs every place the input is suppose to be read. I have no idea what is going on.

  • I need a small parser (jquery) that knows if an input is URL:PORT format

    - by Johua
You have a user input string from a textbox for example var strInput = $("#txtBox").val(); strInput has some string now. I need to now if it is of this format: IP:PORT Basically a user can input something like this: http://192.168.300.22:20000 1) Frist part (protocol): http:// always needs to be replaced by: https:// 2) Second part (everything until the ":" sign): 192.168.200.22 (or www.google.com) 3) Third part (port): everyhing after ":" (example: 9999, 100000) I step): TAKE THE INPUT var strInput = $("#txtBox").val(); II) step): PARSE THE INPUT III) results): var strProtocol = "https//"; var strIP = parsedIP; var strPORT = parsedPORT; So i need 2 know how to get the values (parsedIP and parsedPORT).

  • input field placeholder in jQuery

    - by Hristo
    I'm trying to create a Login page, not worrying about actually logging in yet, but I'm trying to achieve the effect where there is some faded text inside the input field and when you click on it, the text disappears or if you click away the text reappears. I have this working for my "Username" input field, but the "Password" field is giving me problems because I can't just do $("#password").attr("type","password"). Here's my code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <title>Insert title here</title> <!-- Links --> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css" /> <!-- Scripts --> <script type="text/javascript" src="jQuery.js"></script> <script> // document script $(document).ready(function(){ // login box event handler $('#login').click(function(){ $('.loginBox').animate({ height: '150px' }, '1000' ); $('#username').show(); // add pw placeholder field $('#password').after('<input type="text" id="placeHolder" value="Password" class="placeHolder" />'); $('#password').hide(); }); // username field focus and blur event handlers $('#username').focus(function() { if($(this).hasClass('placeHolder')){ $(this).val(''); $(this).removeClass('placeHolder'); } }); $('#username').blur(function() { if($(this).val() == '') { $(this).val('Username'); $(this).addClass('placeHolder'); } }); // password field focus and blur event handlers $('#placeHolder').focus(function() { $('#placeHolder').hide(); $('#password').show(); $('#password').focus(); }); $('#password').blur(function() { if($('#password').val() == '') { $('#placeHolder').show(); $('#password').hide(); } }); }); </script> </head> <body> <div id="loginBox" class="loginBox"> <a id="login">Proceed to Login</a><br /> <div id="loginForm"> <form> <input type="text" id="username" class="placeHolder" value="Username" /> <input type="password" id="password" class="placeHolder" value="" /> </form> </div> </div> </body> </html> Right now, I can click on the password input box and type in it, but the text is not disappearing and the "type" doesn't get set to "password"... the new input field I create isn't being hidden, it just stays visible, and I'm not sure where the problem is. Any ideas? Thanks, Hristo

  • unobtrusive "default" text in input WITHOUT jQuery

    - by Adam Kiss
Hello, i'm trying to write unobtrusive default/placeholder text in input (actually, relatively placed label over input, which hides on onFocus, and stays hidden if input isn't empty on onBlur), but I don't want to use jQuery, because this is the only javascript used on page - therefore using jQuery seems a bit over the top. Please, how can I do this without jQuery? Thank you.

  • Unobtrusive Maximum Input Lengths with JQuery and FluentValidation

    - by Steve Wilkes
If you use FluentValidation and set a maximum length for a string or a maximum  value for a numeric property, JQuery validation is used to show an error message when the user inputs too many characters or a numeric value which is too big. On a recent project we wanted to use input’s maxlength attribute to prevent a user from entering too many characters rather than cure the problem with an error message, and I added this JQuery to add maxlength attributes based on JQuery validation’s data- attributes. $(function () { $("input[data-val-range-max],input[data-val-length-max]").each(function (i, e) { var input = $(e); var maxlength = input.is("[data-val-range-max]") ? input.data("valRangeMax").toString().length : input.data("valLengthMax"); input.attr("maxlength", maxlength); }); }); Presto!

  • Horizontal histogram won't accept input after the first input

    - by vincentbelkin
    So I'm making a program which is supposed to print a horizontal histogram of the lengths of words in its input. I don't know if most of it is OK since the main problem is it won't accept any input after the first one. Oh I also put comments on the parts I'm having some trouble with, like how to print "-" multiple times in order to represent histogram. I've tried making other versions of the code but I couldn't check if I'm close to getting it because again it won't accept another input after the first input. /*Write a program to print a histogram of the lengths of words in its input. It is easy to draw the histogram with the bars horizontal*/ #include <stdio.h> #define MAX 30 #define IN 1 #define OUT 0 int main() { int a,c,i,k,state,word[MAX]; a=0; k=0; state=OUT; for(i=0;i<MAX;i++) word[i]=0; while((c=getchar())!=EOF) { if(c==' '||c=='\t'||c=='\n') state=OUT; else state=IN; while(state==IN) a++; if(state==OUT) { word[i]=a; i++; } /*This part is hard for me, I don't know how to print X multiple times!*/ if((c==getchar())&&c==EOF) { for(i=0;i<MAX;i++) { for(i=0;i<=word[i];i++) putchar('-'); putchar('\n'); } } } }

  • Network Your Computers & Devices: Step by Step

    - by The Geek
If you’re looking for a great book to help you learn more about Windows home networking, there’s a new book on the market by our good friend Ciprian, and published by none other than Microsoft Press. Note: our friend Ciprian has been a guest contributor here on How-To Geek in the past, and he’s not only a geek that knows what he’s talking about, he’s also one of the more honest and decent people I’ve worked with. In his spare time, he runs the 7 Tutorials web site. The Book One of the great things about this book is that you aren’t limited to just Windows networking—it also explains how to connect Windows 7, XP, Vista, Mac OS X, and even Linux on the same network and share folders and devices between them. Everything in the book is written in a typical How-To Geek step-by-step format, with plenty of screenshots and pictures to help you through the process. Book Outline If you’re going to be spending some money on the book, you probably want to know what it’s all about, and since the Amazon page doesn’t give, well, much information at all, here’s the entire outline for you: Setting Up a Router and Devices Setting User Account on All Computers Setting Up Your Libraries on All Windows 7 Computers Creating the Network Customizing Network Sharing Settings in Windows 7 Creating the Homegroup and Joining Windows 7 Computers Sharing Libraries and Folders Sharing and Working with Devices Streaming Media Over the Network and the Internet Sharing Between Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Computers Sharing Between Mac OS X and Windows 7 Computers Sharing Between Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7 Computers Keeping the Network Secure Setting Up Parental Controls Troubleshooting Network and Internet Problems It’s a great book, with loads of information, and compared to most tech books isn’t very expensive—only $19.79 for the paperback and $9.99 for the Kindle version. Well worth it, and hey, it’s an official Microsoft Press book—written by a How-To Geek guest author. • USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

    - by AaronLS
I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

  • What do the 4 keyboard input method systems in 10.04 mean?

    - by Android Eve
I am trying to install another language support (in addition to the default US). Checking that language checkbox in "Install / Remove Languages..." wasn't too difficult. :) But now I want to add keyboard support, too, for that language. Again, I am prompted with a nice listbox with the following 4 options: none ibus lo-gtk th-gtk But I have no idea what these mean. I googled "ubuntu 10.04 keyboard input method system none ibus lo-gtk th-gtk" but all I could find was descriptions of problems, not an actual definition. Could you please point me to a webpage where I can learn about the meanings of these 4 different methods and +'s and -'s of each?

  • How can I get six Xbox controllers to provide input to an HTML5 game?

    - by Daniel X Moore
I'm creating a six player HTML 5 game designed to be played locally (Red Ice). I've previous set up handling 7 Wiimotes using something along the lines of Joy2Key to map each input for each player to a separate keyboard key, but Wiimotes are pretty hard on the hands for these types of games and not very ergonomic so I thought I'd try and get Xbox controller support. I don't believe that any simple key mapping solution will work due to the nature of the directional stick. My inclination is that this will require a browser plugin and if so I'd prefer to write the plugin for Google Chrome. How do I create a Chrome browser plugin to handle multiple Xbox controllers or is there some other way? Please do not answer this question saying it can't be done, because it absolutely can. EDIT: I don't believe any keymapping/mouse simulating solution will work unless it can reliably distinguish six axis of inputs, one per player.

  • How do I fix a corrupted harddrive after failed upgrade?

    - by Nil
The problem originated when I was trying to fix this problem. Things went horribly, horribly wrong and I ended up with a new problem altogether. The last thing I did was run sudo apt-get install and that caused my system to freeze. I restarted my computer and it would not boot from the harddrive. I ran a copy of Ubuntu 12.10 from a flashdrive that I had and ran gparted to see if my partitions were all there. It returned this message: Invalid partition table on /dev/sda -- wrong signature 5208. The drive appeared as a 2TiB unallocated drive with an error. The drive had 4 partitions before (plus random unallocated space). There was a fat32 partition, an ext4 partition which contained ubuntu 13.04/13.10 (I don't even know which one at this point), an extended partition which contained a swap partition for my ubuntu partition (I was meaning to move that ubuntu partition into the extended partition, never got around to it), and another partition (I don't remember how I formatted it). I should also mention this is a 1TB harddrive. So in short, I have a corrupted partition table on my primary harddrive from which I boot from, how can I fix this? I tried mounting the drive with sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/ubuntu then I changed my directory to said folder and tried to list files and this monstrosity happened: $ ls ls: cannot access ??w?j^?.: Input/output error ls: cannot access ??(? ?x?.|: Input/output error ls: cannot access 6W_@?)?._??: Input/output error ls: cannot access HB0v???.A}?: Input/output error ls: cannot access ???.?X: Input/output error ls: cannot access t)?.+?l: Input/output error ls: cannot access ?h@ ?.@ : Input/output error ls: cannot access >? @??.???: Input/output error ls: cannot access m???.??: Input/output error ls: cannot access @ if??a?: Input/output error ls: cannot access ?M!vN$?.??n: Input/output error ls: cannot access ?o? ??.Bm`: Input/output error ls: cannot access ?:I??? N64oid brings retro emulation of Nintendo’s popular N64 console to Android devices. N64oid is an N64 console emulator for Android devices. You’ll need a copy of the $5.99 emulator, ROMs (from the usual sources, unless you’ve got a ROM ripping setup in your basement and a stack of old cartridges), and a suitably speedy Android device. Older Android devices will find the playback choppy and subpar, but newer and speedier devices like the Nexus-One and Samsung Galaxy should have no problem handling the emulator. Like all emulators N64oid is a work in progress and emulating an entire closed-system console on a totally different set of hardware is never a perfect 1:1 emulation, but if you’re a die hard fan of classic N64 titles (check out this list of top ranked titles to inspire some nostalgia) N64oid is worth the price of a burger for sure. • VirtualBox: Why are some USB devices disabled?

    - by torbengb
Overview: My Host OS is Ubuntu 10.10 and guest OS is WinXP on the VirtualBox version downloaded from Oracle including "VirtualBox 4.0 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" so that USB passthrough works. This works in general (I was able to back up my iPhone to iTunes in the guest OS), but some devices aren't available even though they're ptrovided in the VirtualBox settings. Specifics: In the VirtualBox settings for the guest OS, there's the part where you can select which of your USB devices should be visible to the guest OS. I've selected several devices including the iPhone. So far so good. Then an iOS upgrade came along; my iPhone is now in DFU mode (or recovery mode?) and represents itself not as "iPhone" but as "iPhone (DFU mode)". I have now also added this device to the list of USB devices that the guest OS should see -- but it doesn't see this device. Questions: Am I right in expecting that the guest OS ought to see the DFU device when I add it in the VirtualBox settings? What steps do I need to take so that the guest OS will really see the DFU device?

  • JavaScript: input validation in the keydown event

    - by c411
Hi, I'm attempting to do info validation against user text input in the process of keydown event. The reason that I am trying to validate in the keydown event is because I do not want to display the characters those that are considered to be illegal in the input box at the beginning. The validation I am writing is like this, function validateUserInput(){ var code = this.event.keyCode; if ((code<48||code>57) // numerical &&code!==46 //delete &&code!==8 //back space &&code!==37 // <- arrow &&code!==39) // -> arrow { this.event.preventDefault(); } } I can keep going like this, however I am seeing drawbacks on this implmentation. Those are, for example, Conditional statement become longer and longer when I put more conditions to be examined. keyCodes can be different by browsers. I have to not only check what is not legal but also have to check what are exceptionals. In above examples, delete, backspace, and arrow keys are exceptionals. But the feature that I don't want to lose is having not to display the input in the textarea unless it passes the validation. (In case the user try to put illegal characters in the textarea, nothing should appear at all) That is why I am not doing validation upon keyup event. So my question is, Are there better ways to validate input in keydown event than checking keyCode by keyCode? Are there other ways to capture the user inputs other than keydown event before browser displays it? And a way to put the validation on it? Thanks for the help in advance.
