  • Discard unprintable characters returned in server's XML response

    - by Penang
    While trying to use the Bing API to search, I am getting characters that are not printable and do not seem to hold any extra information. The goal is to save the XML (UTF-8) response as a text file to be parsed later. My code currently looks something like this: URL url = new URL(queryURL); BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(url.openStream())); BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(query+"-"+saveResultAs)); String str = in.readLine(); out.write(str); in.close(); out.close(); When I send the contents of 'str' to console it looks something like this: and here's a what the newly created local XML file looks like: What should I be doing to convert the UTF-8 text so that str does not have the extra characters?

  • Execute an external application as root - problem

    - by user598011
    Good morning: I'm trying to run an external application that needs to be executed as root. I have to read the lines from exit after the execution of this application but it says "permission denied", as if the its not been done correctly. I've been thinking over a time and I can not move forward. The code is as follows: process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("su"); String[] command = {external application command}; process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(comando); InputStream inputStream = process.getInputStream(); BufferedReader bufferedReader = null; try { bufferedReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(inputStream),8192); String line = null; while ((line = bufferedReader.readLine()) != null) { System.out.println("read line:"+line ); } } catch (IOException ioe) { ioe.printStackTrace(); } process.waitFor(); Does anyone know why not let me run the command? Thanks.

  • retrieving 'nulls' from website using Java URL input stream

    - by Roio
    hi all, i'm trying to read the text from a website using the Java URL input stream as follows - URL u = new URL(str); br3 = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(u.openStream())); while(true) System.out.println(br3.readLine()); this seems to work fine for most websites, but for some url shortening services like linkbee, the object draws a blank. e.g. http://linkbee.com/FUAKF, i can view the source code using an explorer, however i repeatedly get nulls when i use the above code.

  • What is an appropriate way to programmatically exit an application?

    - by denchr
    I am evaluating user inputs as commands for my application. If the user presses Q, or q, and then hits enter, the application quits and execution terminates. Is there a proper context, or best practices on how to do that? I do not have any resources to release, or anything like that. Should I just use System.exit(0);? Is there a recommended way to do that? As my first approach I do something like this: while (true){ try{ BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); //Other logic goes here... if (br.readLine().equalsIgnoreCase("Q")){ System.exit(0); } } catch (IOException ioe) { System.out.println("IO error trying to read your selection"); } }

  • Implementing union of Set using basic java array

    - by lupindeterd
    Note: This is an assignment. Hi, Continuing with my Set implementation using Java basic array, I'm now struggling with the 3 to last function namely the union. import java.io.*; class Set { private int numberOfElements = 0; private String[] setElements = new String[5]; private int maxNumberOfElements = 5; // constructor for our Set class public Set(int numberOfE, int setE, int maxNumberOfE) { int numberOfElements = numberOfE; String[] setElements = new String[setE]; int maxNumberOfElements = maxNumberOfE; } // Helper method to shorten/remove element of array since we're using basic array instead of ArrayList or HashSet from collection interface :( static String[] removeAt(int k, String[] arr) { final int L = arr.length; String[] ret = new String[L - 1]; System.arraycopy(arr, 0, ret, 0, k); System.arraycopy(arr, k + 1, ret, k, L - k - 1); return ret; } int findElement(String element) { int retval = 0; for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++) { if ( setElements[i] != null && setElements[i].equals(element) ) { return retval = i; } retval = -1; } return retval; } void add(String newValue) { int elem = findElement(newValue); if( numberOfElements < maxNumberOfElements && elem == -1 ) { setElements[numberOfElements] = newValue; numberOfElements++; } } int getLength() { if ( setElements != null ) { return setElements.length; } else { return 0; } } String[] emptySet() { setElements = new String[0]; return setElements; } Boolean isFull() { Boolean True = new Boolean(true); Boolean False = new Boolean(false); if ( setElements.length == maxNumberOfElements ){ return True; } else { return False; } } Boolean isEmpty() { Boolean True = new Boolean(true); Boolean False = new Boolean(false); if ( setElements.length == 0 ) { return True; } else { return False; } } void remove(String newValue) { for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++) { if ( setElements[i].equals(newValue) ) { setElements = removeAt(i,setElements); } } } int isAMember(String element) { int retval = -1; for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++ ) { if (setElements[i] != null && setElements[i].equals(element)) { return retval = i; } } return retval; } void printSet() { for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++) { System.out.println("Member elements on index: "+ i +" " + setElements[i]); } } String[] getMember() { String[] tempArray = new String[setElements.length]; for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++) { if(setElements[i] != null) { tempArray[i] = setElements[i]; } } return tempArray; } Set union(Set x, Set y) { String[] newtemparray = new String[x.getLength]; newtemparray = x.getMember; return x; } } // This is the SetDemo class that will make use of our Set class class SetDemo { public static void main(String[] args) { //get input from keyboard BufferedReader keyboard; InputStreamReader reader; String temp = ""; reader = new InputStreamReader(System.in); keyboard = new BufferedReader(reader); try { System.out.println("Enter string element to be added" ); temp = keyboard.readLine( ); System.out.println("You entered " + temp ); } catch (IOException IOerr) { System.out.println("There was an error during input"); } /* ************************************************************************** * Test cases for our new created Set class. * ************************************************************************** */ Set setA = new Set(1,10,10); setA.add(temp); setA.add("b"); setA.add("b"); setA.add("hello"); setA.add("world"); setA.add("six"); setA.add("seven"); setA.add("b"); int size = setA.getLength(); System.out.println("Set size is: " + size ); Boolean isempty = setA.isEmpty(); System.out.println("Set is empty? " + isempty ); int ismember = setA.isAMember("sixb"); System.out.println("Element six is member of setA? " + ismember ); Boolean output = setA.isFull(); System.out.println("Set is full? " + output ); setA.printSet(); int index = setA.findElement("world"); System.out.println("Element b located on index: " + index ); setA.remove("b"); setA.emptySet(); int resize = setA.getLength(); System.out.println("Set size is: " + resize ); setA.printSet(); Set setB = new Set(0,10,10); Set SetA = setA.union(setB,setA); } } Ok the method in question will be the implementation of union. As such this: Set union(Set x, Set y) { String[] newtemparray = new String[x.getLength]; newtemparray = x.getMember; return x; } I got this error: symbol : variable getLength location: class Set String[] newtemparray = new String[x.getLength]; ^ d:\javaprojects\Set.java:122: cannot find symbol symbol : variable getMember location: class Set newtemparray = x.getMember; ^ 2 errors My approach for union would be: *) create temporary array of string with size of the object x length. *) store object x members to temporary array by looping the object and calling the getMember *) loop object y members and check if element exist against temporary array. *) discard if it exist/add if it is not there *) return obj x with the union array. thanks, lupin

Sample output follows: java SetDemo Enter string element to be added hello You entered hello Set size is: 10 Set is empty? false Element sixb is member of setA? -1 Set is full? true Element b located on index: 2 Set size is: 9 Elements of setA Member elements on index: 0 hello Member elements on index: 1 world Member elements on index: 2 six Member elements on index: 3 seven Union of setA and setB Member elements on index: 0 b Member elements on index: 1 z Member elements on index: 2 x Member elements on index: 3 y thanks, lupin

  • Uncompress GZIPed HTTP Response in Java

    - by bill0ute
    Hi, I'm trying to uncompress a GZIPed HTTP Response by using GZIPInputStream. However I always have the same exception when I try to read the stream : java.util.zip.ZipException: invalid bit length repeat My HTTP Request Header: GET www.myurl.com HTTP/1.0\r\n User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; fr; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6\r\n Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8\r\n Accept-Language: fr,fr-fr;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.5,en;q=0.3\r\n Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate\r\n Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,UTF-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7\r\n Keep-Alive: 115\r\n Connection: keep-alive\r\n X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest\r\n Cookie: Some Cookies\r\n\r\n At the end of the HTTP Response header, I get path=/Content-Encoding: gzip, followed by the gziped response. I tried 2 similars codes to uncompress : GZIPInputStream gzip = new GZIPInputStream (new ByteArrayInputStream (tBytes)); StringBuffer szBuffer = new StringBuffer (); byte tByte [] = new byte [1024]; while (true) { int iLength = gzip.read (tByte, 0, 1024); // <-- Error comes here if (iLength < 0) break; szBuffer.append (new String (tByte, 0, iLength)); } And this one that I get on this forum : InputStream gzipStream = new GZIPInputStream (new ByteArrayInputStream (tBytes)); Reader decoder = new InputStreamReader (gzipStream, "UTF-8");//<- I tried ISO-8859-1 and get the same exception BufferedReader buffered = new BufferedReader (decoder); I guess this is an encoding error. Best regards, bill0ute

  • HTML inside webView

    - by Samuh
    I am posting some data to a server using DefaultHttpClient class and in the response stream I am getting a HTML file. I save the stream as a string and pass it onto another activity which contains a WebView to render this HTML on the screen: response = httpClient.execute(get); InputStream is = response.getEntity().getContent(); BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is,"utf-8")); StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(); String line; while((line=br.readLine())!=null){ sb.append(line); sb.append("\n"); } is.close(); Intent intent = new Intent(this,Trial.class); intent.putExtra("trial",sb.toString()); startActivity(intent); Log.i("SB",sb.toString()); In Second Activity, the code to load the WebView reads: WebView browser = ((WebView)findViewById(R.id.trial_web)); browser.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true); browser.loadData(html,"text/html", "utf-8"); When I run this code, the WebView is not able to render the HTML content properly. It actually shows the HTML string in URL encoded format on the screen. Interestingly, If I copy the Loggers output to HTML file and then load this HTML in my WebView(using webview.loadurl(file:///assets/xyz.html)) everything works fine. I suspect some problem with character encoding. What is going wrong here? Please help. Thanks.

  • Java FileLock for Reading and Writing

    - by bobtheowl2
    I have a process that will be called rather frequently from cron to read a file that has certain move related commands in it. My process needs to read and write to this data file - and keep it locked to prevent other processes from touching it during this time. A completely separate process can be executed by a user to (potential) write/append to this same data file. I want these two processes to play nice and only access the file one at a time. The nio FileLock seemed to be what I needed (short of writing my own semaphore type files), but I'm having trouble locking it for reading. I can lock and write just fine, but when attempting to create lock when reading I get a NonWritableChannelException. Is it even possible to lock a file for reading? Seems like a RandomAccessFile is closer to what I need, but I don't see how to implement that. Here is the code that fails: FileInputStream fin = new FileInputStream(f); FileLock fl = fin.getChannel().tryLock(); if(fl != null) { System.out.println("Locked File"); BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fin)); System.out.println(in.readLine()); ... The exception is thrown on the FileLock line. java.nio.channels.NonWritableChannelException at sun.nio.ch.FileChannelImpl.tryLock(Unknown Source) at java.nio.channels.FileChannel.tryLock(Unknown Source) at Mover.run(Mover.java:74) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Looking at the JavaDocs, it says Unchecked exception thrown when an attempt is made to write to a channel that was not originally opened for writing. But I don't necessarily need to write to it. When I try creating a FileOutpuStream, etc. for writing purposes it is happy until I try to open a FileInputStream on the same file.

  • Upload image from J2ME client to a Servlet

    - by Akash
    I want to send an image from a J2ME client to a Servlet. I am able to get a byte array of the image and send it using HTTP POST. conn = (HttpConnection) Connector.open(url, Connector.READ_WRITE, true); conn.setRequestMethod(HttpConnection.POST); conn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); os.write(bytes, 0, bytes.length); // bytes = byte array of image This is the Servlet code: String line; BufferedReader r1 = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); while ((line = r1.readLine()) != null) { System.out.println("line=" + line); buf.append(line); } String s = buf.toString(); byte[] img_byte = s.getBytes(); But the problem I found is, when I send bytes from the J2ME client, some bytes are lost. Their values are 0A and 0D hex. Exactly, the Carriage Return and Line Feed. Thus, either POST method or readLine() are not able to accept 0A and 0D values. Any one have any idea how to do this, or how to use any another method?

    Hi, I want to send Image from J2ME to SERVLET. I am able to convert image into Byte Array, and send by Http POST. I have coded as : - From Mobile : conn = (HttpConnection)Connector.open(url,Connector.READ_WRITE,true); conn.setRequestMethod(HttpConnection.POST); conn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); os.write(bytes, 0, bytes.length);//bytes = byte array of image At servlet : String line; BufferedReader r1 = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); while ((line = r1.readLine()) != null) { System.out.println("line=" + line); buf.append(line); } String s = buf.toString(); byte[] img_byte = s.getBytes(); Now d problem I found is, when I send Bytes from Mob App, some bytes are LOST , whose value is 0A and 0D-Hex ... Exactly, Cr- Carriage Return & Lf- Line Feed... It means, POST method OR readLine() not able to accept 0A & 0D value... And so I come to know that, LOST bytes are 0A and 0D occurrence in image's byte array.... Any one have any idea, how to do this, or how to use any another method..... Thanks -Akash

  • In Java, send commands to another command-line program

    - by bradvido
    I am using Java on Windows XP and want to be able to send commands to another program such as telnet. I do not want to simply execute another program. I want to execute it, and then send it a sequence of commands once it's running. Here's my code of what I want to do, but it does not work: (If you uncomment and change the command to "cmd" it works as expected. Please help.) try { Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime(); String command = "telnet"; //command = "cmd"; Process pr = rt.exec(command); BufferedReader processOutput = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(pr.getInputStream())); BufferedWriter processInput = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(pr.getOutputStream())); String commandToSend = "open localhost\n"; //commandToSend = "dir\n" + "exit\n"; processInput.write(commandToSend); processInput.flush(); int lineCounter = 0; while(true) { String line = processOutput.readLine(); if(line == null) break; System.out.println(++lineCounter + ": " + line); } processInput.close(); processOutput.close(); pr.waitFor(); } catch(Exception x) { x.printStackTrace(); }

  • Run a .java file using ProcessBuilder

    - by David K
    I'm a novice programmer working in Eclipse, and I need to get multiple processes running (this is going to be a simulation of a multi-computer system). My initial hackup used multiple threads to multiple classes, but now I'm trying to replace the threads with processes. From my reading, I've gleaned that ProcessBuilder is the way to go. I have tried many many versions of the input you see below, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to properly use it. I am trying to run the .java files I previously created as classes (which I have modified). I eventually just made a dummy test.java to make sure my process is working properly - its only function is to print that it ran. My code for the two files are below. Am I using ProcessBuilder correctly? Is this the correct way to read the output of my subprocess? Any help would be much appreciated. David primary process package Control; import java.io.*; import java.lang.*; public class runSPARmatch { /** * @param args */ public static void main(String args[]) { try { ProcessBuilder broker = new ProcessBuilder("javac.exe","test.java","src\\Broker\\"); Process runBroker = broker.start(); Reader reader = new InputStreamReader(runBroker.getInputStream()); int ch; while((ch = reader.read())!= -1) System.out.println((char)ch); reader.close(); runBroker.waitFor(); System.out.println("Program complete"); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } } subprocess package Broker; public class test { /** * @param args */ public static void main(String[] args) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub System.out.println("This works"); } }

  • Java HttpURLConnection bekommt keine cookies

    - by TeNNoX
:) Mein Code: HttpURLConnection conn = (HttpURLConnection) new URL(url).openConnection(); conn.setDoInput(true); conn.setDoOutput(true); conn.setRequestMethod("POST"); conn.setRequestProperty("useragent", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0"); conn.setRequestProperty("Connection", "keep-alive"); DataOutputStream out = new DataOutputStream(conn.getOutputStream()); out.writeBytes("USER=tennox&PASS=*****"); out.close(); BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(conn.getInputStream())); String line; String response = new String(); while ((line = in.readLine()) != null) { response = response + line + "\n"; } in.close(); System.out.println("headers:"); int i = 0; String header; while ((header = conn.getHeaderField(i)) != null) { String key = conn.getHeaderFieldKey(i); System.out.println(((key == null) ?
