  • Is full partition encryption the only sure way to make Ubuntu safe from external access?

    (By "external access", I mean eg. via a Live CD, or another OS on the same dual-boot machine) A friend wants to try Ubuntu. He's fed up with Vista grinding to a crawl (the kids? :), so he likes the "potential" security offered by Ubuntu, but because the computer will be multi-booting Ubuntu (primary) and 2 Vistas (one for him, if he ever needs it again, and the other one for the kids to screw up (again). However, he is concerned about any non-Ubuntu access to the Ubuntu partitions (and also to his Vista partition)... I believe TrueCrypt will do the job for his Vista, but I'd like to know what the best encryption system for Ubuntu is... If TrueCrypt works for Ubuntu, it may be the best option for him, as it would be the same look and feel for both. Ubuntu will be installed with 3 partitions; 1) root 2) home 3) swap.. Will Ubuntu's boot loader clash with TrueCrypt's encrypted partition? PS.. Is encryption a suitable solution?

  • No Panel when I boot-up, after running "Remember Currently Running Applications".

    As the question's title says, I have no Panel when I re-start Ubuntu. It happened after I selected "Automatically remember running applications when logging off" in System-- Preferences-- Startup Applications-- Options. I can manually start it via (gnome-panel &) in the Terminal, bur aside from that, it refuses to start iself. (I've since disabled "Remember Applications wehen logging off") How can I get it working normally again?

  • 2 Google Tag Manager containers = double triggers?

    I have a Joomla website with existing analytics done by a GTM tag and I need to add another image tag (1x1 pixel) from a separate GTM container. I set the event name for the additional GTM container to a different name from from the existing GTM container (default 'gtm.js') so that the new tag only fires under the specified event. The new container tested out fine in a blank HTML page, but when it is put in the website, it ends up firing twice. I know that because Firebug showed 2 1x1 pixels being loaded and I mark each request with a randomly-generated UID to distinguish them on the server side. I suspect this being caused by having multiple GTM container tags but want to check whether anyone has run into this problem before? As of now, I could not verify nor fix the double counting problem.

  • Why does printf report an error on all but three (ASCII-range) Unicode Codepoints, yet is fine with all others?

    The 'printf' I refer to is the standard-issue "program" (not the built-in): /usr/bin/printf I was testing printf out as a viable method of convert a Unicode Codepoint Hex-literal into its Unicoder character representation, I was looking good, and seemed flawless..(btw. the built-in printf can't do this at all (I think)... I then thought to test it at the lower extreme end of the code-spectrum, and it failed with an avalanche of errors.. All in the ASCII range (= 7 bits) The strangest thing was that 3 value printed normally; they are: $ \u0024 @ \u0040 ` \u0060 I'd like to know what is going on here. The ASCII character-set is most definitely part of the Unicode Code-point sequence.... I am puzzled, and still without a good way to bash script this particular converion.. Suggestions are welcome.   • How can I activate a Panel-icon via a script (or get its screen co-ordinates; to click it)?

    This question is in the context of Lucid 10.04 desktop (ie. no Unity). I do most screen navigation via the keyboard (not the mouse), so I'm looking for a script solution to re-activating an app which has been "minimized" to the Panel's Notification Area. I'll use Skype as an example. wmctrl allows me enough access to normally-minimized windows, but when Skype is "minimized" to the Notification Area, it simply goes "off the radar" as far as wmctrl is concerned. Bearing in mind that icon positions in the Notification Area can vary, is there some way to determine the screen co-ordinates of Skype's Panel icon, so I can "click" it using xdotool (or a similar utility)? ...or maybe there is a more direct way to activate the "dormant" Skype? ... (and I don't mean the mouse ;) Here is the script, so far.   • Ubuntu Doesn't Start from USB After Installation

    My computer refuses to boot from the USB even after I change everything that I can possibly think of on my motherboard's BIOS. But I have booted from the USB twice in the past. The first time is when I first got the computer and needed to install a new operating system. The second time is when I installed Windows onto the whole hard drive and needed to reinstall Ubuntu. It seems that it only refuses to boot if there is already an existing installation of Ubuntu on the hard drive. Any ideas on what is going on?

    I have been running into walls with this for a while, so I posted at stackoverflow, and I was pointed over here... I am attempting to setup multiple IP addresses on Snow Leopard so that I can develop with SSL certificates. I am running XAMPP - I don't know if that is the problem, but I guess I would run into the same problems, considering the built in apache is turned off. So first up I looked into starting up the IPs on start up. I got up an running with a new StartupItem that runs correctly, because I can ping the ip address: ping 127.0.0.2 ping 127.0.0.1 And both of them work. So now I have IP addresses, which as you may know are not standard on OSx. I edited the /etc/hosts file to include the new sites too: 127.0.0.1 site1.local 127.0.0.2 site2.local I had already changed the httpd.conf to use the httpd-vhosts.conf - because I had a few sites running on the one IP address. What is the best way to write my result set into an array as set above where name and abbreviation share the same key?

Ex: People older than 26 Name Properties Jane Smart, Funny, Good-looking Joe Smart, Workaholic It's also acceptable to return one of the properties and total property count. The query should be efficient: there are millions of rows in people table, hundreds of thousands of rows in properties table (so most people have no properties). There are hundreds of rows selected at a time. Is there any way to do it?

    I'm using Jasper Reports/iReports crosstabs to create a matrix of student and results. So for example Jim is doing subjects A, B, C and Sally is doing A, C What I want is something like: Subj-A Subj-B Subj-C Jim P M D Sally D D But as my SQL orders by name then subject I get: Subj-A Subj-B Subj-C Subj-A Subj-C Jim P M D Sally D D As you can see in the above the results are correct but the formatting is woeful. Is there anyway I can generate the reports to use names and subject only once and filling in the values from here? This probably isn't clear.

    I have two tables: RatingsTable that contains a ratingname and a bit whether it is a positive or negative rating: Good 1 Bad 0 Fun 1 Boring 0 FeedbackTable that contains feedback on things...the person rating, the rating and the thing rated. The feedback can be determined if it's a positive or negative rating based on RatingsTable. Jim Chicken Good Jim Steak Bad Ted Waterskiing Fun Ted Hiking Fun Nancy Hiking Boring I am trying to write an efficient MySQL query for the following: On a page, I want to display the the top 'things' that have the highest proportional positive ratings. I want to be sure that the items from the feedback table are unique...meaning, that if Jim has rated Chicken Good 20 times...it should only be counted once. At some point I will want to require a minimum number of ratings (at least 10) to be counted for this page as well. I'll want to to do the same for highest proportional negative ratings, but I am sure I can tweak the one for positive accordingly.

    real quick question regarding HAProxy reqrep. I am trying to rewrite/replace the request that gets sent to the backend. I have the following example domain and URIs http://domain/web1 http://domain/web2 I want web1 to go to backend webfarm1, and web2 to go to webfarm2. Currently this does happen. However I want to strip off the web1 or web2 URI when the request is sent to the backend.   • Connectivity with SQL Server Express 2008 r2 and SQL Server 2000 on same machine

    At first glance this may same a duplicate of Installing both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2008 on the same machine, but it is not. I have SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same machine and working fine. My problem lies with connecting to the 2008 R2 server from a remote machine. My connectivity needs to be TCP. The legacy installation or SQL 2000 uses the default port of 1433. The named instance is by default configured to use 'Shared Memory' and is working fine. When I configured the 2008 R2 server to use 1433 (I did not think that thru) the service refused to start becasue 1433 was already in use by the legacy SQL 2000 default instance. Doh! What I want to do is have both servers available simultaneously via TCP. both servers need not be on the same port, put if I cannot run them on the same port, then how do I configure the clients? Is there not some kind of proxy available that can monitor the 1433 port and pass the request thru to the correct SQL instance by name? Is this capability built into SQL server already? Thanks, Jim

  • Outlook 2010 not resolving SMTP address to Display Name

    I have a weird problem where a user (director, naturally) has an odd problem with the way the to field shows in his Outlook. We are using Outlook 2010 (with RPC/HTTP) and Exch 2003 at the back end. Most of his mail shows in his mailbox with the To: field as normal. (e.g. Fred Bloggs in the to field.) However, some mails come in showing in the To: field as fred[email protected]. (Apparently this is an issue!) For example, most show as: but a few come in as: There doesn't appear to be a pattern to this. I have tried to replicate by: Sending from any specific senders to see if it recurs (it doesn't) Typing his full name in my Outlook and sending (it resolves as normal) Sending programatically (e.g. from script) - (it still resolves OK) Forcing a "fred[email protected]" entry in my Outlook. It resolves as soon as I hit enter Sending in cached mode Sending disconnected Anyone got any ideas how I can either replicate the problem or fix it! I can't tell at the moment whether it is a problem at his end or the sender's. EDIT This seems to be a global issue, following some more digging. Most people seem to have a few emails in their inbox addressed to their smtp address, rather than display name.

  • Converting a Windows 2003 server

    We have a legacy database system based upon MS SQL running on Windows Server 2003. The client software will only run on Windows XP. We have recently had success converting a client into a virtual machine and running it under Fusion on Mac minis. So far, it is working incredibly well. So well, in fact, that we are now considering trying to convert the server to a virtual machine. This raises several questions, though: 1. The server uses a raid array. Does the VM virtualize the raid array? I only ask because in my experience Windows products don't like it when you change core hardware. 2. Is there any reason why running SQL server on a virtual machine won't work? It will be up 24/7. 3. Is there a different converter for servers? 4. Will I have to track down the licensing for MS SQL and Server 2003 or will they come across ok? 5. The company that designed the software is no longer in business. There is some fear that the software is somehow tied to the hardware configuration. We bought the hardware, but their engineers came out and configured the system. Will the virtual machine be able to spoof particular chip sets? Thanks! Jim Bass

  • Microsoft DevDays 2010 Day #1

    It's been an eventful day here at Microsoft DevDays 2010, and the show hasn't even officially started! First item of business is to get to a hotel for rest and get some great food-not necessarily in that order. My flight was as good as one can expect- the guy next to me, Jim Anderson, was affable but not overly chatty, and he's a soundman on European tour with The Sonics. Jim was the house-sound guy for the Crocodile Caf for many years, and it was great to talk to a guy who loves audio like I do....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
