  • Matlab - Find point of intersection between two vectors

    I have a very simple matlab question. What is the easiest way to find the point of intersection between two vectors. I am not familiar with the various matlab fuctions -- it seems like there should be one for this. For example if I have one vector from (0,0) to (6,6) and another vector from (0,6) to (6,0), I need to determine that they intersect at (3,3) Thanks.

  • Changeing scaling of Matlab Figure

    Hi, I have a figure that displays 20.000 points on the x-axis. So it labels the x-axis from 0 .. 20.000. However, now I would like to scale it form 0 to 50. But when I try to do this in the plot window it just shows me the first 50 points, instead of changeing the scale. Is there any straightforward way to do that in Matlab? Many thanks for your help!

  • In MATLAB, how can 'preallocating' cell arrays improve performance?

    I was reading this article on MathWorks about improving MATLAB performance and you will notice that one of the first suggestions is to preallocate arrays, which makes sense. But it also says that preallocating Cell arrays (that is arrays which may contain different, unknown datatypes) will improve performance. But how will doing so improve performance because the datatypes are unknown so it doesn't know how much contiguous memory it will require even if it knows the shape of the cell array, and therefore it can't preallocate the memory surely? So how does this result in any improvement in performance? I apologise if this question is better suited for StackOverflow than Programmers but it isn't asking about a specific problem so I thought it fit better here, please let me know if I am mistaken though. Any explanation would be greatly appreciated :)

    I have a problem with the MATLAB 2012 installation. After having installed it using alt+f2 and having used gksudo nautilus I have installed MATLAB in the correct folder which is: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a Then I inserted the license and the window told "activation complete" or something like that. This made me happy, but only for a while because as soon as I try to search for Matlab within the applications I cannot find it and neither if I try to run matlab into terminal it says: command not found Can someone help me!?     If I get coordinates via coords = get(0,'PointerLocation'); How can I convert them into points gotten via ginput? i.e, I would like to get the same values from coords = get(0,'PointerLocation'); coords=someConversion(coords); As I would have gotten by calling coords=ginput(1); And clicking inside the figure in the same spot as the mouse was in the previous bit of code.

    It's possible to call .NET from MATLAB, so I thought I would try to use ADO.NET to connect to a database. I seem to have hit a blocking problem - anytime you try and create a Command object, it throws an error. Error using ==> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand 'Connection' is already defined as a property. >> Does anyone have some insight into this? It seems like a pure and simple bug on MATLAB's part - maybe it happens with every .NET class that happens to have a property called "Connection". Should I just throw in the towel and give up on using MATLAB to talk to a database using .NET?

  • Matlab set defaultTextInterpreter to LaTeX

    I am running Matlab R2010A on OS X 10.7.5 I have a simple matlab plot and would like to use LaTeX commands in the axis and legend. However setting: set(0, 'defaultTextInterpreter', 'latex'); Has zero effect, and results in a TeX warning that my tex commands can not be parsed. If I open plot tools of this plot, the default interpreter is set to 'TeX'. Manually setting this to 'LaTeX' obviously fixes this, but I can't do this for hundreds of plots. Now, if I retrieve the default interpreter via the Matlab prompt, i.e get(0,'DefaultTextInterpreter') It says 'LaTeX', but again, when I look in the properties of the figure via the plot tools menu, the interpreter remains set to 'TeX'.     I'm on a project of liver tumor segmentation and classification. I used Region Growing and FCM for liver and tumor segmentation respectively. Then, I used Gray Level Co-occurence matrix for texture feature extraction. I have to use Support Vector Machine for Classification. But I don't know how to normalize the feature vectors. Can anyone tell how to program it in Matlab? To the GLCM program, I gave the tumor segmented image as input. Was I correct? If so, I think, then, my output will also be correct. I gave the parameters exactly as in the example provided in the documentation itself.     I am creating UTF16 text files with Matlab, which I am later reading in using Java. In Matlab, I open a file called fileName and write to it as follows: fid = fopen(fileName, 'w','n','UTF16-LE'); fprintf(fid,"Some stuff."); In Java, I can read the text file using the following code: FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileName); Scanner scanner = new Scanner(fileInputStream, "UTF-16LE"); String s = scanner.nextLine(); Here is the hex output: Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F 10 11 12 13 00000000 73 00 6F 00 6D 00 65 00 20 00 73 00 74 00 75 00 66 00 66 00 s.o.m.e. .s.t.u.f.f. The above approach works fine. But, I want to be able to write out the file using UTF16 with a BOM to give me more flexibility so that I don't have to worry about big or little endian. In Matlab, I've coded: fid = fopen(fileName, 'w','n','UTF16'); fprintf(fid,"Some stuff."); In Java, I change the code to: FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileName); Scanner scanner = new Scanner(fileInputStream, "UTF-16"); String s = scanner.nextLine(); In this case, the string s is garbled, because Matlab is not writing the BOM. I can get the Java code to work just fine if I add the BOM manually. With the added BOM, the following file works fine. Addendum I selected the answer below from Amro because it exactly solves the question I posed. One key discovery for me was the difference between the Unicode Standard and a UTF (Unicode transformation format) (see http://unicode.org/faq/utf_bom.html). The Unicode Standard provides unique identifiers (code points) for characters. UTFs provide mappings of every code point "to a unique byte sequence." Since all but a handful of the characters I am using are in the first 128 code points, I'm going to switch to using UTF-8 as Romeo suggests. UTF-8 is supported by Matlab (The warning shown below won't need to be suppressed.) and Java, and for my application will generate smaller text files. I suppress the Matlab warning Warning: The encoding 'UTF-16LE' is not supported. with warning off MATLAB:iofun:UnsupportedEncoding;

  • Daubechies-4 Transform in MATLAB

    Hello: I have a 4x4 matrix which I wish to decompose into 4 frequency bands (LL, HL, LH, HH where L=low, H=high) by using a one-level Daubechies-4 wavelet transform. As a result of the transform, each band should contain 2x2 coefficients. How can I do this in MATLAB? I know that MATLAB has dbaux and dbwavf functions. However, I'm not sure how to use them and I also don't have the wavelet toolbox. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I want to compute magnetic fields of some conductors using the biot-savart-law and I want to use a 1000x1000x1000 matrix. Before I use Matlab, but now I want to use Python. Is Python slower than Matlab? How can I make Python faster? EDIT: Maybe the best way is to compute the big array with c/c++ and then transfering them to python. I want to visualise then with VPython. EDIT2: Could somebody give an advice for which is better in my case: C or C++?
