  • Silverlight Cream for December 26, 2010 -- #1015

    - by Dave Campbell
In this all-submittal Issue: Michael Washington(-2-), Ian T. Lackey(-2-, -3-), Sandrino Di Mattia, Colin Eberhardt(-2-), and Antoni Dol. Above the Fold: Silverlight: "A Style for the Silverlight CoverFlow Control Slider" Antoni Dol WP7: "Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 1 Phone Home" (and the other two parts) Ian T. Lackey Silverlight/WPF: "A Simplified Grid Markup for Silverlight and WPF" Colin Eberhardt Shoutouts: Dennis Doomen has updated his Coding Guidelines and provided a new WhitePaper, A4 cheat sheet, and VS2010 rule sets: December Update of the Coding Guidelines for C# 3.0 and C# 4.0 From SilverlightCream.com: Windows Phone 7: Saving Data when Keyboard is visible MIchael Washington takes a possible desktop approach to a data-saving issue on WP7... good solution, and one of the commenters brought up another. Windows Phone 7 View Model (MVVM) ApplicationBar Since I'm catching up, there's another post by Michael Washington... this one is looking at the WP7 ApplicationBar, and issues if you're trying to stay MVVM-proper. Michael gets around that by creating the AppBar with a behavior, and shares with all of us! Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 1 Phone Home Ian T. Lackey has begun a series where he's packaging common tasks into reusable behaviors. First up is a phone dialer launching action that can be dropped on any control in your app. Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 2 Binding & Browsing In his next post, Ian T. Lackey digs into the WebBrowserTask and provides a behavior allowing you to launch a browser session straight to an URL from any WP7 control. Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 3 Email ‘em In his last post (all in one day), Ian T. Lackey looks at EmailComposeTask, ending up with a behavior to pre-populate EmailAddress and Subject. Cracking a Microsoft contest or why Silverlight-WCF security is important Sandrino Di Mattia was working on an app while also having a page up for a MSDN/TechNet game, and noticed some interesting WCF traffic that he was easily able to get access to. A Simplified Grid Markup for Silverlight and WPF Colin Eberhardt built us all an attached property for the Grid control that bails us out from the ugly layout we always have to put into position... oh, also for WPF! #uksnow #silverlight The Movie! – Happy Christmas Colin Eberhardt also took some time to have fun with his Twitter/BingMaps mashup for the UKSnow hashtag... you can now playback the snowfall reports, and mouse-over the snowflakes to see the original tweet... very cool stuff, Colin! A Style for the Silverlight CoverFlow Control Slider Antoni Dol got tired of the Silverlight Slider in the CoverFlow control and crafted a very nice-looking style for the Slider ... check it out and grab the source. • T-SQL Tuesday #006: LOB, row-overflow and locking behavior

    - by Michael Zilberstein
This post is my contribution to T-SQL Tuesday #006 , hosted this time by Michael Coles . Actually this post was born last Thursday when I attended Kalen Delaney's "Deep dive into SQL Server Internals" seminar in Tel-Aviv. I asked question, Kalen didn't have answer at hand, so during a break I created demo in order to check certain behavior. Demo goes later in this post but first small teaser. I have MyTable table with 10 rows. I take 2 rows that reside on different pages. In first session...(read more)

  • Monitoring Database disk space

    - by Michael Freidgeim
An article Data files: To Autogrow Or Not To Autogrow? recommends NOT to rely on auto-grow, because it causing delays in unplanned times. We should mtonitor database files(both data and log), and if they close to max capacity, manually increase the size. However it doesn't give references, how to monitor the free space inside databases. I've tried to look how to do it. It can be done manually using   execute sp_spaceused for the database in question or  sp_SOS (can be downloaded from http://searchsqlserver.techtarget.com/tip/Find-size-of-SQL-Server-tables-and-other-objects-with-stored-procedure)Alternatively you can run SQL commands as suggested in Http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=82359 by Michael Valentine Jonesselect [FREE_SPACE_MB] = convert(decimal(12,2),round((a.size-fileproperty(a.name,'SpaceUsed'))/128.000,2)) from dbo.sysfiles aMore useful article Monitor database file sizes with SQL Server Jobs describes how to setup monitoring Finally I found the excellent articleManaging Database Data Usage With Custom Space Alerts, that can be followed even support personnel without much DBA experience.

  • URL masking with .htaccess

    - by Michael Nguyen
I need a hardcore programmer to help me with URL masking. So this is my situation. My website www.michaelfotograf.dk/blog/ is the main site that needs to be configured. I have another website/webhotel called www.umagepar.dk www.umagepar.dk is redirected to www.michaelfotograf.dk/blog/ The blog is an ongoing project where i post a lot of stuff to get my ranking higher on google. www.umagepar.dk which redirect to www.michaelfotograf.dk/blog/ is also a project on is own, so I do not want people to know, that it is a blog connected with www.michaelfotograf.dk/blog/ I therefore need to mask www.michaelfotograf.dk/blog/ so it will be called www.umagepar.dk in the URL in the searchbar at all times! What I need is a programmer that can do this for me. Name your price, and I'll see if I can affort it. Michael

  • Booting Error while using 12.04 booting from GRUB

    - by Paul Z.
my name is Paul. I have encountered an issue relating to GRUB booting and the booting process in general. I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my machine for quite a while. Before that, i had (before) 10.04, 11.04, 11.10, etc. I have been running Ubuntu, in general, but more specifically 12.04 for a long time with little to no problems. The problem: Earlier today, i was using my machine and then decided to take a little break. I shut down my machine (laptop, in case anyone was wondering) and left. Later, I came back ready to start it up and continue. I started it up and it took me to the Toshiba screen (like normal) then to the GRUB screen. I guessed that nothing was truly wrong, and chose the first option (something around the lines of: Ubuntu, with linux 3.22.0-35-generic). I waited for a bit and it still displayed the same purple screen. I restarted it and now chose the option like the first but with recovery at the end. Same result. Later, I waited longer and found that my computer came up with a bunch of lines of script. I waited longer but nothing new happened. What are your suggestions as to fix this problem? I will let my computer run overnight with the recovery setting and will let you know what the result is. Until then, please help. Thank you, your time and effort is greatly appreciated!

  • Bluetooth device paired and connected (no sound)

    - by Michael
I've got a Bluetooth headset which works great in both Windows 8 and Android 4.2 however on Ubuntu (13.10) it just doesn't seem to work. I installed Blueman, it paired and connected successfully when I tried Audio sink but it still doesn't show up in my Sound Settings nor PulseAudio which I installed and tried. All there is in my Sound Settings is "Analog Output". I tried several fix like changing and adding things in /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf without any success. I've restarted the bluetooth service several times in the process as well. Let me know if you need more information from me and my system. Kind regards, Michael.

  • Using photos from network drive with Windows 8 photo app

    - by Paul
I have photos on my network drive that I want to display (in live tiles preferably in the photo app). Under c:\users\paul\pictures I have made a link to them, using mklink /d: And this works fine in classic: But nothing appears in the photo.app: I am guessing that this is an issue with indexing - the photos won't appear until they are indexed, and Windows won't normally index a network drive (unless you make it "available offline, which just copies the files locally) - but this is exactly what the mklink was supposed to work around, and the properties show it is indexable: Any ideas?

  • Automount of AFP shares on Lion clients from OS X Snow Leopard server - not working right

    - by Paul
Recently upgraded Snow Leopard clients to Lion. AFP shares are set up as login items. The network shares on some of the machines now take a long time to come up (10 minutes). Several machines that were upgraded are acting normally, and three machines with clean installs of Lion (not upgraded) are also working normally. Is there a network file causing a conflict on some of these client machines? Thanks, Paul

  • DDD Melbourne -lessons leant

    - by Michael Freidgeim
I've attended DDD Melbourne and want to list the interesting points, that I've leant and want to follow. To read more: * Moles-Mocking Isolation framework for .NET. Documentation is here.   (See also Mocking frameworks comparison created October 4, 2009 ) * WebFormsMVP * PluralSight   http://www.pluralsight-training.net/offers/default.aspx?cc=trial   * ELMAH: Error Logging Modules and Handlers *Rhino.Mocks   * VS UI Test Recorder -see posts Visual Studio 2010 Coded UI Test User Guide. Note that Microsoft Test Manager (MTM) toolis a separate application, that can be started from Program files/VS 2010 menu.It is not a menu inside Visual Studio.   * CodeContract- seems great in Debug. Will be good if in production  will be possible runtime configuration, ability to log instead of throw exception. Current recommendation to customize Debug.Assert is not trivial The programmer is free to use the customization provided by Debug.Assert using assert listeners to obtain whatever runtime behavior they desire (e.g., ignoring the error, logging it, or throwing an exception).   // Clears the existing list of assert listener (the default pop-up box) System.Diagnostics.Debug.Listeners.Clear(); // Install your own listener System.Diagnostics.Debug.Listeners.Add(MyTraceListener); Note that you can't catch specific ContractException, but can catch generic Exception(see How come you cannot catch Code Contract exceptions?)   Books recommended "Working effectively with legacy code" by Michael Feathers (corresponding article)   Fowler, Martin Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code, slides http://jaoo.dk/jaoo1999/schedule/MartinFowlerRefractoring.pdf
