Prolog: Error Handling and Find Unique

How would I go about finding only unique items for instance: is_unique(FruitName):- In the example clauses the answer would be Pear. IP Micro-outages, telephone micro-outages, and CATV micro-outages

This is a long and complicated question, mostly because it has been going on for 2.5 years without a solution in sight. It also is only one-third computer related, the other two-thirds are cable TV and cable-phone related. Background I have COX Communications for a cable provider, and we get Internet, digital cable TV, and digital phone service through them. The Internet is a SB5101 right now, and has been a DPC2100 and SB5120 in the past. Same results. The phone service is provided through a telephone interface mounted on the outside of the house (not classic VoIP) and the CATV is through a Scientific Atlanta receiver without DVR. I do have a TiVo connected to the CATV box. Symptoms The CATV shows "blocking" -- sometimes very very short duration where a few blocks appear on the screen. Sometimes it lasts long enough that the video "pauses" for 2-5 seconds, and rarely but not unseen the audio also fails. The CATV decoder box shows no correctable (FEC) or uncorrectable errors. That is, all BER counters are zero for the video stream. The Internet shows "micro-outages" where it appears that sent packets are not making it out, but I continue to receive packets from local modems. That is, pings stop coming back, but I continue to see modems broadcast for DHCP, and sometimes they ask more than once. The cable modem shows no errors during this time, but cable modems lie like you would not believe. It is actually possible to unplug the coax from the modem for 20 seconds and it reports NO ERRORS to the provider's tools. The phone service cuts out for 1-3 seconds, infrequently. When this happens, I hear NOTHING (not even comfort noise) and the remote side hears a "click" as if I were getting a call waiting message. However, there is no call incoming, other than the one I'm currently on of course. Things SEEM to happen more frequently when the temperature outside swings from cold to warm, so fall/spring seems worse than summer/winter. All micro-outages occur between once or twice a day (which I could ignore) to 10 times per hour. All SNR, signal levels, noise levels, etc. show very close to optimal when measured. COX's diagnosis This is a continual pain for me. Over the last 2.5 years, they have opened, "fixed" something, and closed the tickets. They close it without confirming that it is indeed better, and when I reopen they cannot do that, but instead they open a new ticket and send yet another low-level tech out to do the same signal tests and report that all is OK. I've finally gotten a line tech who has a clue and is motivated enough to pursue this with me. We have tried things like switching the local nodes over to UPS and generator power, but this does not trigger the noise. We have tried replacing all cabling, the tap outside my house, the modem, the CATV decoder -- all without resolution. Recently they have decided it is both my computer or switch, my TiVo, and my phone that are all broken and causing this issue. My debugging steps I spent the worse day of my TV-watching life yesterday and part of today. I watched live TV without the TiVo. I witnessed blocking, but it did "feel different." and was actually more severe. Some days it is better, some days it is worse, so perhaps this was just a very bad day. Today, I connected the TiVo to my DVD player, and ran two very long movies through it. I saw no blocking at all during nearly 6 hours of video. Suggestions? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next? I understand perhaps only the IP side can be addressed here, but it is one of the more limiting debugging options.

Our wi-fi at work is ridiculously slow, will adding more range extenders improve it?

At work, we have two wireless networks (e.g., Work1 Work2); the Work2 is used downstairs and Work1 is used upstairs. However, both are notoriously slow. The connection is better when we are wired in, but unfortunately due to our building being very old and our company growing very fast, most employees are not seated near the walls where the ethernet cables are. I had Cox, our ISP, run a bandwidth utilization test and it doesn't seem like we are capping out on upstream/downstream, which leads me to believe that it's strictly an issue with the wireless networks (which were implemented before I got there). The wireless networks are both Apple Airport Extremes. Is there anything I can do to improve the situation for everyone? Speeds are extremely slow, and sometimes drops out.

Can I run a web site from my home network without jeapordizing other computers on my LAN?

I have a home LAN with 5 computers and a NAS, all connected to a Linksys router which is connected to my Cox cable modem. I'm interested in having one of my computers run an IIS-based web site and to have it be accessible to the internet with a static IP. However, I do not want o jeapordize the safety of the other computers on my home network! Is there anyway to do this safely, or as safe as possible? I may also like to run an FTP server from this computer. Finally, optionally I would like to allow remote access to this computer from the internet--but it seems to me that that may increase the security risk to the other computers substantially.

Wi-Fi connection drops when downloading torrents, but wired connection still works

After downloading for an hour or so, the Wi-Fi connection on my tablet stops working; forcing me to restart my router(it basically hangs when trying to connect). This only happens when downloading torrents. WIRED connection on my desktop PC with router still works fine; no issues at all. I tired to lower the number of global connections to 50, but I still have the problem. I have also updated to the latest Linksys firmware. One PC, a tablet and a smartphone. I have COX cable. Please let me know if you need any other info. Thank you!

wifi routers and concurrent devices

We have a Linksys WRT54G WiFi router in our office which was working great when we had 5-6 folks. Now on peak days we have 10-15 people, each with a computer, smartphone, etc, and an ooma VOIP device. On average 1-2 times a day I need to go hard reboot the router, and sometimes the border router (Cox-supplied device). I assume this is just because the router cant handle this many concurrent users. So my question is can these consumer routers handle this kind of load? If not, would adding more devices solve the problem, and how close proximity can I put 2 routers without having interference problems (our office area is not that big physically)?

ISP Couldn't Verify My HFC MAC Id

An Internet Service Provider whom I used in the past, claims to provide me with Internet service. However, when I gave his technician the Hybrid Fiber - COX MAC ID on my Modem, he could not find it on his list. Also, the Internet Service Provider doesn't even have my current mailing address. All he has is my phone number and he is demanding payment. On the other hand, I use a cable service which provide TV. At this point, the Internet Service Provider is threatening to disconnect my Internet service. My question: How can I verify if I am getting the service from him or through the cable?

Linux foxboard network monitor

I want to use a Foxboard a simple network monitor for multiple routers (all routers are connected to the internet). Foxboard is a mini pc with an embedded version of Debian. My idea is to use multiple virtual network devices like this: eth0 192.168.2.10 eth0:1 192.168.3.10 eth0:2 192.168.4.10 I found a nice Python script to ping an external host here (the solution from Ryan Cox): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/316866/ping-a-site-in-python Is it possible to configure Debian to use eth0 when I ping www.site-a.com and eth0:1 when I ping www.site-b.com?

Leopard Network Shares and browsing are unreliable

I have two macs, running Leopard 10.5.8. One is the 13" MBP connected via WiFi, and the other is a 24" 2008 iMac, connected via ethernet. There are at least another 6-10 machines (windows and mac) awake on the network (with shares) at any given time, yet there are plenty of times where I cannot see any devices/shares in either my "Shared" section in Finder, nor can I see any computers in "Network" in Finder. Restarting doesn't help. I've restarted all the networking gear in the house to no avail. Our network is a series of gigabit switches connected to a D-Link gaming router. I believe we use OpenDNS, and our provider is Cox. I hate having to use "Go - Connect to Server" to browse to commonly used file shares (by IP). I'd like to know why my shares do not always and consistently appear in Leopard. Edit: I ran OnyX this morning, and performed the cleaning and maintenance operations (including disk permissions) on both my Macs, and at least one of my macs has started showing network devices again. (the other is still going). No idea how long this will last. Any ideas as to what is causing this issue, and how to prevent it? Edit 2: Aaaand there the shares go again. So running OnyX is not a permanent or reliable fix for this issue. Edit 3: After a clean reinstall and update, network shares are still unreliable. The SMBClient command mentioned in comments shows me the information it's supposed to show, but the shares do not appear in the shared section. They'll also vanish at random and reappear at random throughout the day.

Ann Arbor Day of .NET 2010 Recap

Had a great time at the Ann Arbor Day of .NET on Saturday. Lots of great speakers and topics. And chance to meet up with friends you usually only communicate with via email/twitter. My Presentation I presented "Getting up to speed with C# 3.5 — Just in time for 4.0!". There's still a lot of devs that are either stuck in .NET 2.0 or just now moving to .NET 3.5. This presentation gave highlights of a lot of the key features of 3.5. I had great questions from the audience. Afterwards, I talked with a few people who are just now getting in to 3.5 and they told me they had a lot of "A HA!" moments when something I said finally clicked and made sense from a code sample they had seen on the web. Thanks to all who attended! A few people have asked me for the slides and demo. The slides were nothing more than a table of contents. 90% of the presentation was spent inside Visual Studio demo'ing new techniques. However, I have included it in the ZIP file with the sample solution. You can download it here. Dennis Burton on MongoDB I caught Dennis Burton's presentation on MongoDB. I was really interested in this one as I've missed the last few times Dennis had given it to local user groups. It was very informative and I want to spend some time learning more about MongoDB. I'm still an old-school relational guy, but I'm willing to investigate alternatives. Brian Genisio on Prism Since I'm not a Silverlight/WPF guy (yet), I wasn't sure this would interest me. But I talked with Brian for a couple of minutes before the presentation and he convinced me to catch it. And I'm glad he did. Prism looks like a very nice framework for "composable UI's" in Silverlight and WPF. I like the whole "dependency injection" feel to it. Nice job Brian! GiveCamp Planning I spent some time Saturday working on things for the upcoming GiveCamp (which is why I only caught a few sessions). Ann Arbor's Day of .NET and GiveCamp have both been held at Washtenaw Community College so I took some time (along with fellow GiveCamp planners Mike Eaton and John Hopkins) to check out the new location for Ann Arbor GiveCamp this year! In the past, WCC has let us use the Business Education (BE) building for our GiveCamp's. But this year, they're moving us over to the Morris Lawrence (ML) building. Let me tell you – this is a step UP! In the BE building, we were spread across two floors and spread out into classrooms. Plus, our opening and closing ceremonies were held in the Liberal Arts (LA) building – a bit of a walk from the BE building. In the ML building, we're together for the whole weekend. We've got a large open area (which can be sectioned off if needed) for everyone to work in: Right next to that, we have a large area where we can set up tables and eat. And it helps that we have a wonderful view while eating (yes, that's a lake out there with a fountain): The ML building also has showers (which we'll have access to!) and it's own auditorium for our opening and closing ceremonies. I've also thought about changing the search parameter to 'tags.geography', but am having a devil of a time figuring out what the search predicate would be.

Javascript: prototypal inheritance and the prototype property

Hi, I have a simple code fragment in JS working with prototype inheritance. function object(o) { function F() {} F.prototype = o; return new F(); } //the following code block has a alternate version var mammal = { color: "brown", getColor: function() { return this.color; } } var myCat = object(mammal); myCat.meow = function(){return "meow";} that worked fine but adding this: mammal.prototype.kindOf = "predator"; does not. ("mammal.prototype is undefined") Since I guessed that object maybe have no prototype I rewrote it, replacing the var mammal={... block with: function mammal() { this.color = "brown"; this.getColor = function() { return this.color; } } which gave me a bunch of other errors: "Function.prototype.toString called on incompatible object" and if I try to call _myCat.getColor() "myCat.getColor is not a function" Now I am totally confused. After reading Crockford, and Flanagan I did not get the solution for the errors. So it would be great if somebody knows... - why is the prototype undefined in the first example (which is foremost concern; I thought the prototype of explicitly set in the object() function) - why get I these strange errors trying to use the mammal function as prototype object in the object() function? Edit by the Creator of the Question: These two links helped a lot too: Prototypes_in_JavaScript on the spheredev wiki explains the way the prototype property works relativily simple. What it lacks is some try-out code examples. Some good examples are provided by Morris John's Article. I personally find the explanations are not that easy as in the first link, but still very good. The most difficult part even after I actually got it is really not to confuse the .prototype propery with the internal [[Prototype]] of an object.

On Life and TechEd…

I haven’t been writing here I know. I am very sorry, but I am just too busy trying to make my personal life just as good as my SharePoint life. So I was at TechEd again helping with the hands on labs, but I had a very long couple of weeks. I will have a long week again. I started out going to my friend, Randy Walker’s, wedding and I ended up at my grandmother’s condo in Fort Lauderdale. It was a very trying week. I had to drive 5 1/2 hours to the wedding from St. Louis and back. So Randy is an awesome person. He is a great guy and he was the first person ever to nominate me for MVP. I knew it probably wasn’t going anywhere, but it was the thought that count. I met Randy in 2008 at Tulsa Techfest. We had fun jamming out to Rockband. I knew he was good people back then. He has let me vent and I have let him vent over countless personal problems. He has always been a great friend. So it was a no brainer when I decided to go to his wedding no matter how much driving or stress or lack of sleep it was worth it. I am incredibly happy for him to finally find a diamond amongst a lot of coal. To take part in his celebration was so awesome. I thank him again for letting me participate in this ceremony. Now after Randy’s wedding I drove 5 1/2 hours landed in St. Louis, fed a cat an asthma pill hidden in wet cat food, and slept for 4 hours. I immediately saw my best friend who dropped me off at the airport and proceeded to TechEd. I slept 1 hour on each flight, then ended up working a 3 hour shift at TechEd. The rest of the week was a haze of connecting with people and sleeping very little. I got to see my friend Tasha and her husband Casey plus a billion other people. It was a great week and then I got a call from my grandmother. It turns out her husband was admitted to the hospital. My grandparents on my dad's side have been divorced since the 60s, which means I never got to see them together. I always felt like they never cliqued. When I was a kid we would always spend half our time in Chicago at grandma’s and half our time at grandpa’s houses. We would hang out with my grandpa’s wife Bobbi and my grandma’s husband Leo. My cousin’s always called Leo by Pappa and my brother and I would use Leo. My cousins lived in Chicago up until my cousin Gavi was born then they moved to Philadelphia. I remember complaining to my dad that we never visited anywhere cool just Chicago and Kansas City. I also remember Leo teaching me and my brother, Sam, how to climb a tree and play tennis on the back of the apartment wall. My grandfather’s was kind of stuffy and boring, but we always enjoyed my grandmother’s. She had games and Disney Movies and toys. Leo always made it a ton of fun to visit. I’m not sure a lot of people knew this fact, but when I was 16 years old I saw my grandfather on my mother’s side slowly die of congestive heart failure in a nursing home. When I was 18 I saw my grandmother on my mother’s side slowly die of an infection over a 30 day period. I hate hospitals and I hate nursing homes, but sometimes you have to suck in your gut and be strong. I tried to do that this weekend and I hope I did an ok job. I really hope things get better, but if they don’t I really appreciate everything he has given me in life. I am a terrible tennis player and I haven’t climbed a tree in ages, but they both encouraged me when encouragement from my parents was lacking. It was Father’s Day today and I have to at least pay tribute to Leo Morris, because he has been a good person to me all my life. Technorati Tags: TechEd,Grandparents,Father's Day

Malcolm Anderson blogged about “Einstein’s Razor” yesterday, which reminded me of my favorite software development “law”, the name of which I can never remember. It took much Wikipedia-ing to find it (Hofstadter’s Law – see below), but along the way I compiled the following list: Amara’s Law: We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run. Brook’s Law: Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later. Clarke’s Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Law of Demeter: Each unit should only talk to its friends; don't talk to strangers. Einstein’s Razor: “Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler” is the popular paraphrase, but what he actually said was “It can scarcely be denied that the supreme goal of all theory is to make the irreducible basic elements as simple and as few as possible without having to surrender the adequate representation of a single datum of experience”, an overly complicated quote which is an obvious violation of Einstein’s Razor. (You can tell by looking at a picture of Einstein that the dude was hardly an expert on razors or other grooming apparati.) Finagle's Law of Dynamic Negatives: Anything that can go wrong, will—at the worst possible moment. - O'Toole's Corollary: The perversity of the Universe tends towards a maximum. Greenspun's Tenth Rule: Any sufficiently complicated C or Fortran program contains an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Common Lisp. (Morris’s Corollary: “…including Common Lisp”) Hofstadter's Law: It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law. And wouldn’t it be cool to write a program so great that the users want to eat pie and talk about it?) Raymond’s Rule: Computer science education cannot make anybody an expert programmer any more than studying brushes and pigment can make somebody an expert painter. Sowa's Law of Standards: Whenever a major organization develops a new system as an official standard for X, the primary result is the widespread adoption of some simpler system as a de facto standard for X. Turing’s Tenet: We shall do a much better programming job, provided we approach the task with a full appreciation of its tremendous difficulty, provided that we respect the intrinsic limitations of the human mind and approach the task as very humble programmers. Udi Dahan’s Race Condition Rule: If you think you have a race condition, you don’t understand the domain well enough. These rules didn’t exist in the age of paper, there is no reason for them to exist in the age of computers. When you have race conditions, go back to the business and find out actual rules. Van Vleck’s Kvetching: We know about as much about software quality problems as they knew about the Black Plague in the 1600s. We've seen the victims' agonies and helped burn the corpses. We don't know what causes it; we don't really know if there is only one disease. We just suffer -- and keep pouring our sewage into our water supply. Wheeler’s Law: All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection... Except for the problem of too many layers of indirection. Wheeler also said “Compatibility means deliberately repeating other people's mistakes.”. The Wrong Road Rule of Mr. X (anonymous): No matter how far down the wrong road you've gone, turn back. Yourdon’s Rule of Two Feet: If you think your management doesn't know what it's doing or that your organisation turns out low-quality software crap that embarrasses you, then leave. Zawinski's Law of Software Envelopment: Every program attempts to expand until it can read mail. Zawinski is also responsible for “Some people, when confronted with a problem, think 'I know, I'll use regular expressions.' Now they have two problems.” He once commented about X Windows widget toolkits: “Using these toolkits is like trying to make a bookshelf out of mashed potatoes.”

Solaris 11.2: Functional Deprecation

In Solaris 11.1, I updated the system headers to enable use of several attributes on functions, including noreturn and printf format, to give compilers and static analyzers more information about how they are used to give better warnings when building code. In Solaris 11.2, I've gone back in and added one more attribute to a number of functions in the system headers: __attribute__((__deprecated__)). This is used to warn people building software that they’re using function calls we recommend no longer be used. While in many cases the Solaris Binary Compatibility Guarantee means we won't ever remove these functions from the system libraries, we still want to discourage their use. I made passes through both the POSIX and C standards, and some of the Solaris architecture review cases to come up with an initial list which the Solaris architecture review committee accepted to start with. This set is by no means a complete list of Obsolete function interfaces, but should be a reasonable start at functions that are well documented as deprecated and seem useful to warn developers away from. More functions may be flagged in the future as they get deprecated, or if further passes are made through our existing deprecated functions to flag more of them.
