    Contrary to this SO question this is for a dotted name (gw.localnet.au), and it doesn't happen straight away. Only after some period of time (quite a long time, possibly days). In fact this is for my ADSL router and its internal IP address which I have named within the router itself and in my Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller DNS Service. Specifically, localnet.au is a Active-Directory-backed primary domain. In fact, an ipconfig /flushdns may fix the problem, but only after a while (about the time it took me to type in this question :-) ). That doesn't explain the root cause though...   • How to collect the performance data of a server during an unreachable/down period using Nagios?

    Some time services and host stop responding due to a poor server performance. I mean, if for some reason (could be lot of concurrency services access, a expensive backup execution on the server or whatever that consume tons of server resources) a server performance is very degraded, that could lead that the server isn't capable to establish any "normal network communication" (without trigger whatever standards timeouts defined for such communication). Knowing host's performance data (cpu, memory, ...) in case of available during that period (host is not down and despite of its performance degradation still allow plugins collect performance data) could be very useful for sysadmin to try to determine what cause the problem, or at least, if the host performance was good and don't interfered at all in the host/service down. This problem could be solved using remote active (NRPE) or remote passive (NSCA) if such remote solutions could store (buffered) perf data to be send to central Nagios server when host performance or network outage allow it. I read the doc of both solutions and can't find any reference to such buffer mechanism neither what happened in case that NSCA can't reach Nagios server. Any idea of how solve this lack of info? so useful for forensic analysis. EDIT: My questions isn about which tools I can use to debug perf problems or gather perf data to analysis, but is about how collect (using Nagios) host perf data even during a network outage for its posterior analysis (kind of forensic analysis). The idea is integrate such data to Nagios graphers like pnp4nagios and NagiosGrapther. I know that I could install tools like Cacti in each of my host, and have a kind of performance data collection redundancy, but I really want avoid that and try to solve all perf analysis requirements with one tools: Nagios

    I've got a MacBook laptop in the house, and when Mac OS X copies files over the network, it often brings along hidden "dot-files" with it. For instance, if I copy "SomeUtility.zip", there will also be copied a hidden ".SomeUtility.zip" file. I consider these OS X dot-files as useless turds of data as far as the rest of my network is concerned, and don't want to leave them on my Windows file server. Let's assume these dot-files will continue to happen. i.e. Think of the issue of getting OS X to stop creating those files, in the first place, to be another question altogether. Rather: How can I use Windows Explorer to find files that begin with a dot / period? I'd like to periodically search my file server and blow them away. I tried searching for files matching ".*" but that yielded – and not unexpectedly – all files and folders. Is there a way to enter more specific search criteria when searching in Windows Explorer? I'm referring to the search box that appears in the upper-right corner of an Explorer window. Please tell me there is a way to escape my query to do what I want?     Im writing some logic in JavaScript using jquery, where i must check the input content against a REGEX pattern ex: "^[a-zA-Z0-9_]*$" //Alpha-numeric and _ The logic is almost done, i just have a little problem filtering the function key DEL, my logic goes like this: var FunctionsKey = new Array(8, 9, 13, 16, 35, 36, 37, 39, 46); function keypressValidation(key) { if (config.regexExp != null) { if ($.inArray(key, FunctionsKey) != -1) { return true; } else { var keyChar = String.fromCharCode(key); return RegexCheck(keyChar); } } return true; } If the KeyCode is one of those in the array, i let it pass, if not i get the char and compare it against the REGEX. The problem is: in some Browsers the DEL and '.' (period sign) have the same key Code 46. So is there a better logic to filter the function keys or must i write a condition for that case, maybe removing the 46 from the array and try to convert it to char and if is (.) let it go to the Regex function if not let it pass? The other question will be are there more shared Key Codes in some browsers? EDIT: My suggested solution wont work because it doesn't matter which key the user pressed (DEL or period) i always get (.) as CHAR at least on OPERA and FF =(.

    I feel very confused about Android streaming to wowza. I am doing a video conference using rtmp cross-platform, but Android doesn't eat RTMP. Therefore I need to find another way to do it. Upstreaming I found a new open-source app called spydroid-ipcamera. It is using rtp, sending udp packets to computer, and opens it in vlc using the following sdp v=0 s=Unnamed m=video 5006 RTP/AVP 96 a=rtpmap:96 H264/90000 a=fmtp:96 packetization-mode=1;profile-level-id=420016;sprop-parameter-sets=Z0IAFukBQHsg,aM4BDyA=; But it can't work. Then I follow wowza tutorial and stream to it and then play again in VLC. That works! I wrote it in http://code.google.com/p/spydroid-ipcamera/issues/detail?id=2 However when I want to add audio in the packet, it fails to work.     Hi there, we've had a ASP.NET web application deployed for a number of years now.... last week we migrated to a slightly slower server to save some money. Now we're frequently getting command timeouts: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding This is understandable in that a slower server will take longer to produce results; take longer time and produce a timeout. Is there any system-wide way to get SqlClient to set a longer timeout? We cannot change the code, as it's everywhere... we're using multiple data access technologies as well. Maybe there's a default command timeout setting on a connection string? We just need to increase it by 30 seconds; we're happy to wait a bit longer for queries to return. thanks

    I am designing a REST API for a web application. I want to clearly version the API so that the interface can be changed in future without breaking existing services. So in my v1.0 API I want to clearly identify it as the v1.0 API, leaving me the freedom to release a future v1.1 version with breaking changes. My question is, would a period in the path component of a URI be bad practice? eg. Is there any good reason not to use http://mysite.com/myapi/v1.0/services as a URI to my service?

  • Sql server management studio reporting "The semaphore timeout period has expired."

    On our development sql server, executing any query containing more than approximately 700 characters stalls for about 10 seconds and then reports the following error: Msg 121, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.) for example, this query select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 700 spaces ..) ' fails fails with the timeout error while this one select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 600 spaces ..) ' fails with the expected Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier. - immediately. Indeed, throwing any query, including random garbage at our dev sql server exhibits this behaviour, while any other sql server I have available acts as expected, so I would think that the query never actually gets to parsing on the server. I'm at a loss here - any hints?

Meaning the output has to be: 2012-04-01 - 2012-12-31 2013-01-01 - 2013-12-31 2014-01-01 - 2014-12-31 2015-01-01 - 2015-12-31 2016-01-01 - 2016-07-01 Preferably the output would be in IList<Tuple<DateTime,DateTime>> list. How would you do this ? Is there anyway to do this with LINQ somehow ? Oh and daylight saving time is not absolutely critical, but surely a bonus. Thanks!

    I want to be able to track the usage of each device connecting to our router so we can split up the ISP bill by usage. Can dd-wrt or tomato provide the stats I'd need to do this? Update: After a bit of googling I'm aware of a much better answer than the current one. However I suspect there's probably more answers out there for other firmwares so in the interests of getting a more diverse set of answers—­and, I'll admit, because I'm getting tired of reading through obtuse firmware documentation—I've put up a bounty. If the only answer added is the one I've found I'll be happy to accept it for the bounty, otherwise I'll add it and accept it myself, but I'm hoping for an even better answer, or at least some options for other firmwares as from looking I've seen a few other people have asked for this and there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer, let's make this it!     We have Varnish 3.0.2 running on Amazon's Linux and it works great. We have a ttl of 48 hours for most content pages and much longer for images, PDFs etc. This weekend we've taken the backend down for some maintenance, so I upped the ttl to 5 days earlier in the week. I had assumed that anything in cache would continue to be served for up to 5 days, but much to our disappointment we checked varnishstat this morning and the cache was almost completely empty and varnish was serving "page not found" messages. I know that this is not what Varnish is designed to do, but why would it reset its cache when the backend is down? And how can I prevent it for next time?

    I am trying to get a rudimentary NFS server up and running. Right now the server is configured as an NFS server due to a workaround for a vendor issue not supporting direct attached clustered storage, which we are trying to get them to resolve. The vendor software is Splunk. The splunk feature we are using requires files be located on shared storage (which for us is /mnt/nfs until they support a real clustered filesystem). Currently the server has a GFS2 filesystem mounted at bootup (it is the only server with the filesystem actively mounted so there should be no problems with locking). We went with GFS2 so switching over to a clustered filesystem is easy should the vendor begin supporting it. NFS is configured to mount that filesystem at /mnt/nfs, which the splunk installation than sees. Splunk is configured to find it's configuration files in /mnt/nfs. However, I am running into a problem where the splunk daemon starts before nfs is finished loading, and because it sees nothing at /mnt/nfs it starts creating files there, and then when the files disappear (nfs finishes mounting the share), splunk craps out. Splunk is set to run at runlevel 3, S90. NFS is set at runlevels 2-5, S60. Is there any way to delay the startup of the splunk process further?

    I just bought a computer from HP and they failed to include SATA power connectors with the power supply other then the one HD and DVD drive. Meanwhile I have two IDE to SATA power adapters that came with my "USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE cable" http://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-SATA-Cable-Adapter/dp/B001OORN06 3rd pic on the left. I was wondering if I would just open up my computer and use it to plug it my SATA drives to the IDE power sources and mount it to the motherboard, would it damage my drives in the long run or have any other significant effects. A friend told me he knows people who have had their HD burn out because of this

  • Is there a monitoring software suite that will alert me if it has received no activity in a time period?

    This might be a very basic question, but I am not very familiar with the exact features of Nagios versus Munin versus other monitoring tools. Let's say we have a process that needs to run daily for some very important infrastructure reasons. We've had cases where the process did not run or was otherwise down for a number of days before anyone noticed. I'd like to set up a system that will enable me to easily know when the daily run did not take place for some reason. I can set up this process to send an email on every successful run (or every failed run), but I do not trust that the people receiving this email would notice an absence of an "I'm OK" message. What I am envisioning is some type of "tripwire" service which this V.I.P. (very-important-process) can send a status message to each time it runs, whether successfully or not; and if the "tripwire" service has not received any word from the VIP within a configurable amount of time, it can then send an alert to someone. (The difference between what I envision and the first approach I outlined is a service that sends a message only in abnormal conditions, rather than a service that sends messages each day that the status is normal/OK). Can Nagios be set up to send an alert like this, if it has not heard from a certain service/device/process in N days? Is there another tool out there which does have this feature?

    When Windows 7 is configured to automatically update at a certain time (say Friday 5pm), is that also when it tries to download updates, or does it pull in the updates throughout the week, and only installs them at the update time? UPDATE: So I actually want the machines to download during one set of times (9am-3pm Mon-Fri), but install during another set of times (e.g. 5pm Friday). Is there a way to achieve this?
