• Errors from ALSA during Arch Linux boot

  Everytime I boot my Linux system, I get these errors while ALSA boots. Despite these, the sound still works, so these are more of an annoyance than anything. How do I stop these occuring? • How to boot linux direct to application on console with no login

  I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc. The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.

  Hello, I'm currently having problems with my arch linux installation, forgot to select a few packages but in the guide they never mention which key do I need to press to select/deselect the packages in the installation screen. I used to select them but it's been a long time, I don't remember much anymore =/ Or, if there is a way to make pacman recognize the cd as a container of packages that'd be great.

I am having issues getting google-chrome browser into full KIOSK MODE with no browser bar on a linux platform Looking through the google forums I have found numerous postings on how to get Chrome to show full kiosk mode BUT tried to execute with --kiosk but doesnt seem to get the job done. I dont know if this is platform specific or not, but any useful information would help. I know F11 will display the browser in full kiosk mode, with no browser bar BUT is there a way to do this with a linux script and no need for a monkey pressing F11??

• How do I setup a systemd service to be started by a non root user as a user daemon?

  I just finished the install and setup process of systemd on my arch-linux system (2012.09.07). I uninstalled initscripts (and removed the configuration files). What I want to do is create a service that can be started and stopped by a non-root user. The service is to start a detached screen session running rtorrent. However I want every user on the system who has set this service to start (enabled) to have a particular instance started for them specifically. How would one go about doing this? I remember reading that systemd supports user instances of services, however I have been unable to find any information on how to set this up, or whether it relates to what I am looking for. • How does the linux kernel manage less than 1GB physical memory ?

  I'm learning the linux kernel internals and while reading "Understanding Linux Kernel", quite a few memory related questions struck me. One of them is, how the Linux kernel handles the memory mapping if the physical memory of say only 512 MB is installed on my system. As I read, kernel maps 0(or 16) MB-896MB physical RAM into 0xC0000000 linear address and can directly address it. So, in the above described case where I only have 512 MB: How can the kernel map 896 MB from only 512 MB ? What about user mode processes in this situation? Where are user mode processes in phys RAM? Every article explains only the situation, when you've installed 4 GB of memory and the kernel maps the 1 GB into kernel space and user processes uses the remaining amount of RAM. I would appreciate any help in improving my understanding. Thanks..!

  Simple question: There is a gazillion Linux distributions out there. Which one (distribution/incl. window manager) makes (technically) the most efficient use of my (aging) computer ? I have appx. 1 GB RAM and a 1.6 GHz processor, 120 GB hd. I develop applications (C++/.NET/mono/ASP/PostGre SQL/). Usually, I prefer distros with apt-get. • Middle Mouse Button does not work in XFCE / Arch Linux

  I have the XFCE desktop manager installed on my Arch Linux system. With E17 (Enlightenment desktop manager) i had no problems with my mouse: all buttons worked correctly out of the box. But in XFCE my middle mouse button does not fire an event at all (no output with xev). Evdev seems to identify my mouse correctly (Razer Deathadder) because it echoes its name in the xorg logs. • Is Flash typically slow on Linux?

  Specifically, I'm running Mint 8 (Helena). I'm extremely new to Linux, and was searching for a solution that was user-friendly and GUI oriented. The box won't be used for much other than web browsing and word processing. Anyway, it runs relatively smoothly, except for Youtube videos... especially full-screen, which runs at like 1 FPS, and even after closing, slows Firefox to a crawl until I restart it. I'd seen an xkcd comic on the matter, but regarded it as a joke until now. Is this actually a problem? Are there any remedies I can try to smooth the applications?

  As an embedded firmware developer, I have used operating systems such as WinCE, Nucleus, ThreadX, VRTX and some background loops. There are more opportunities for me if I had Linux OS experience, or perhaps some certification. In my research, the only way to get Linux experience is to have your company move to a Linux OS. All the recruiters and HR folks won't let you in the door unless you have Linux experience. I haven't found any Universities that teach Linux. Recruiters and HR want some tangible proof (starting up your own Ubuntu box or playing with it doesn't count). So, how does one get into the area of Embedded Linux without Linux experience (I have Unix and Cygwin experience, but not Linux)?

• How to remap CAPSLOCK to ESC in Linux Mint 12

  I would like to remap the CAPSLOCK key to ESC as this is easier to use in Vim. I can make it in Ubuntu 11.04 as there's an option for this in Keyborad configuration. But recently I switched to use Linux Mint and found that there's no such option. I don't know whether it is the gnome3 that makes this happen, as there are only some basic features to customize.   This is embarrassing; I used the usermod command to add myself to the disk group. However I forgot to use the append option! so I'm not a member of any of the groups that I was originally, now terminal says that I'm not even a sudoer (How rude!). So the question is: What are the original groups that a normal Administrator type of user is in? BTW, I am using Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). Any help is appreciated.

• Moving from windows to linux

  I need to reconcile these 2 facts: I don't feel comfortable working on Linux; I need to develop software for Linux. Some background: I have a 10+ years of programming experience on Windows (almost exclusively C/C++, but some .NET as well), I was a user of FreeBSD at home for about 3 years or so (then had to go back to Windows), and I've never had much luck with Linux. And now I have to develop software for Linux. I need a plan. On Windows, you can get away with just knowing a programming language, an API you're coding against, your IDE (VisualStudio) and some very basic tools for troubleshooting (Depends, ProcessExplorer, DebugView, WinDbg). Everything else comes naturally. On Linux, it's a very different story. How the hell would I know what DLL (sorry, Shared Object) would load, if I link to it from Firefox plugin? What's the Linux equivalent of inserting __asm int 3/DebugBreak() in the source and running the program, and then letting the OS call a debugger? Why the hell release builds use something, called appLoader, while debug builds work somehow different? Worst of all: how to provision Linux development environment? So, taking into account that hatred is usually associated with not knowing enough, what would you recommend? I'm ok with Emacs and GCC. I need to educate myself as a Linux admin/user, and I need to learn proper troubleshooting tools (strace is cool, btw), equivalents to the ones I mentioned above. Do I need to do Linux From Scratch? Or do I need to just read some books (I've read "UNIX programming enviornment" by Kernighan and "Advanced Programming..." by Stevens, but I need to learn something more practical)? Or do I need to have some Linux distro on my home computer?

• Problems in Linux Mint 13 MATE with NTFS partitions

  I'm using Linux Mint 13 MATE (32 bit). With Caja file manager (based on Nautilus 2.x) I can create, modify and remove folders and files on NTFS partitions whitout problems. But, for example, when I have a compressed file (.zip, .7z, ...) in a NTFS partition I can't extract it (with File-Roller, Peazip, ...). But I can extract the same file in a ext4 partition perfectly. What might the problem be? Are there (maybe) file permissions for each application?

  A web application lets the user browse its screens for future or past months. The time period the user is currently viewing follows the user through every screen of the system. But users can be logged in for a month or more. After a certain period of inactivity, we will prompt the user: You were viewing November 2008 when you last clicked. Want to view the current (default) time period instead? How long between user clicks should we wait to show this message? I'm guessing somewhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours most people will forget what they were doing, but I'd love to have some data, or someone's experience to base it on. Other suggestions related to this issue?

• linux nooB: Installing ffmpeg + dependencies on aws linux ami (repo issues)

  Im installing ffmpeg to run on an amazon linux ami, and have added the rpmforge repo and the dag repo. Here are some guidelines I'm using for reference: TWoZaO and Razuna The rpmforge repo has ffmpeg, but if you try to install it then it will complain that is missing dependencies (for me libSDL-1.2.so.0()(64bit)). Regardless I will install ffmpeg from svn so I can be sure to enable the options I want (namely libx264). It seems strange to me though that SDL is not in rpmforge or dag, and in according to both of my references above, it should be there.
