• Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears. In total, Cisco has five different headlines - the ticker displays each of the five and then starts back from the beginning. This article is the first in a series that explores how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. jQuery is a free, popular, open-source JavaScript library that simplifies many common client-side tasks, like event handling, DOM manipulation, and Ajax. This article kicks off the series and shows how to build a fairly simple news ticker whose contents can be specified statically in HTML markup or created dynamically from server-side code. • RSS feed created with PHP only shows the title in the feed reader

  I am using the following PHP code to generate the XML for an RSS feed, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. No short description is displayed in the feed reader, all I see is the title of the article. Also, all of the articles say they were published at the same time.   I'm planning to create a news item which uses xml as it's backend and the Display should be like: Date: 08/Mar/2010 ------------------------------ Title     | News ------------------------------ News 4 | Some news News 3 | Some news News 2 | Some news News 1 | Some news ------------------------------ Date: 07/Mar/2010 ------------------------------ Title     | News ------------------------------ News 5 | Some news News 4 | Some news News 3 | Some news News 2 | Some news News 1 | Some news Display should be sorted on Date (descending) Then news items should be sorted on time (descending) Today's news item should be on top, then titles should be sorted-decending (timewise), later will come previous day's news items. I'm not able to come up with the logic of xml which should be used in this case. moreover I'm not able to figure out how should I check "Today's date" in xml's "if" statement. Can I please get some code sample to understand this kinda logic???

• Accessing the feed/entry/id field of an ATOM 1.0 feed with the ROME library

  Hi, I feel a bit stupid asking this question, but I don't know how I can access the ID field of an entry when using ROME to parse an Atom feed. ROME provides it's own meta level of feeds/items, i.e. SyndFeed and SyndEntry. Being an abstraction over RSS and ATOM they only contain elements both formats support. Thus, there is no method to get an ID of an entry. There also exist low level packages for the distinct formats, and the Atom package contains com.sun.syndication.feed.atom.Entry, which provides getId(). However, I don't know how can I convert my SyndEntry into an Entry. I have not found a way to convert it. The (outdated) tutorials show a conversion, but that's only for output though. So how can I easily access the ID field? Thanks in advance.

  I am saving a reference to an RSS Feed in MongoDB, each Feed has an ever growing list of Entries. As I'm designing my schema, I'm concerned about this statement from the MongoDB Schema Design - Embed vs. Reference Documentation: If the amount of data to embed is huge (many megabytes), you may read the limit on size of a single object. This will surely happen if I understand the statement correctly. So the question is, I am correct to assume that I should not embed the Feed Entries within a Feed because I'll eventually reach the limit on size of a single object?

• fetching rss feed, mktime problem (wordpress plugin)

  sorry for the weird question but actually I'm not sure how to ask this. the code works fine but the problem is the following. I fetch items from feeds and compare them to a specific date which is stored into the database as an option. I see if the fetched item is more recent or not and if it is I create a new pending post. however there is one item that just keeps being added because there is something wrong with the date and I don't understand what is wrong because all other items (before and after) are blocked once they are being added as post (so when they are not recent anymore compared with the date I store as an option) I then echo'ed that line and this is the result: yes it exist! 27-03-2010-04-03 Free Exclusive Vector Icon Pack: Web User Interface 29-01-2010-03-01 if(1330732800 < 1335830400) 01 05 2012 the first line is to see if the option still exist and what data was stored in it the second is the actual items that's causing all the problem, it's initial date is less recent then the date but still passes as more recent.... this is the code I use, any help would be great: if(!get_option('feed_last_date')): echo "nope doesn't exist, but were creating one"; $time = time()-60*60*24*30*3; add_option("feed_last_date", date('d-m-Y-h-m', $time)); else: echo "yes it exist! • Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. Similarly, with a bit of additional markup and script you can add pause and play buttons to a ticker, allowing a user to start and stop the ticker by clicking an image or button. • JSON Feed Returning null while using jQuery getJSON

I have to have a server admin update the feed to my liking, so if you can tell me how to get this to work as is, without adding tags to my HTML please let me know. I will be using this with jQuery, and ive been trying to use getJSON which is what returns null. $.getJSON('http://portlandonline.com/shared/cfm/json.cfm?c=27321',function(json){ alert(json); }); that returns null. But if i use a flickr feed for example, it works fine. it returns what it should, [onject Object]. Any ideas?

  I'd like to offer a news-feed like feature for users of our website. When the user logs in, he is shown a list of the latest updates across various areas of the site. I'm afraid that this is going to be difficult to scale. What are some networking / database topologies that can support a scalable infrastructure without having lots of copies of the same data?   I'm designing a News Feed system using PHP/MySQL similar to facebook's. I have asked a similar question before but now I've changed the design and I'm looking for feedback. Example News: User_A commented on User_B's new album. "Hey man nice pictures!" User_B added a new Photo to [his/her] profile. [show photo thumbnail] Initially, I implemented this using excessive columns for Obj1:Type1 | Obj2:Type2 | etc.. Now the design is set up using a couple special keywords, and actor/receiver relationships. My database uses a table of messages joined on a table containing userid,actionid,receiverid,receiverObjectTypeID, Here's a condensed version of what it will look like once joined: News_ID | User_ID | Message | Timestamp 2643 A %a commented on %o's new %r. SomeTimestamp 2644 B %a added a new %r to [his/her] profile. SomeTimestamp %a = the User_ID of the person doing the action %r = the receiving object %o = the owner of the receiving object (for example the owner of the album) (NULL if %r is a user) Questions: Is this a smart (efficient/scalable) way to move forward? How can I show messages like: "User_B added 4 new photos to his profile."?

Once you download the .zip file and unzip it, all that you need to do is manually transfer the contents shown here to the appropriate GIMP folders on your system. You can see the location of the destination folders here on our system… Note: Make certain to make a back-up copy of the “sessionrc and toolrc files” before you transfer Gimp Paint Studio into your installation (in case you would like to or need to revert back to the originals later). When you finish transferring the files start GIMP up and get ready to have fun. And if your experience is like ours then you should see a noticeable difference in window size and arrangement from the default settings.
