  • How can I get the touch screen working on a motion computing m1400

    I picked up a motion computing m1400 for cheap and was successful in getting 11.04 installed on it but have run into trouble getting the touch screen to work. This is one of the older tablet pcs that need a special pen for the touch screen. There are instructions out there for older versions of Ubuntu but they usually rely on a package called wacom-tools that is no longer in the repos. Is there any support for these old tablets or has time passed them by?

    I installed mtp-tools on 14.04 "Trusty" through Software Center. No problems with install. Issuing `mtp-detect' results in 'Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.6 Listing raw device(s) No raw devices found.' I did some research and found that mtpfs might be required. so installed that with :~$ sudo apt-get install mtpfs I still get the following result :~$ mtp-detect Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.6 Listing raw device(s) No raw devices found. My research indicates that the mtp-tools package is still under development. source: http://libmtp.sourceforge.net/ and the documentation is not comprehensive. source man mtp-tools as well as mtp-detect -h I tried adding the PPA from Are there any plans to improve mtp support on future Ubuntu releases? but it seems this is already worked into trusty 14.04 and won't resolve the problem.   • How to prevent creation of monitors.xml?

    I'm using Ubuntu on a tablet and have a problem with the screen rotation, which I can fix by removing ~/.config/monitors.xml, but sadly every time I rotate the screen a new monitors.xml is created. Is there any way to prevent this? I already tried to create an empty file with the same name as root but it was still overwritten after rotating the screen. Edit: I think I finally found the reason for the problem. Everytime the orientation is changed the new orientation is saved in monitors.xml while the original monitors.xml is saved as monitors.xml.backup. By playing around with chattr I found out that this causes Ubuntu to try to restore monitors.xml out of monitors.xml.backup after every login. So if I turn the screen to the left and then back to normal monitors.xml says "orientation=normal" and monitors.xml.backup says "orientation=left". After the login Ubuntu overwrites monitors.xml with the backup and uses its configuration and turns the screen to the left.

    I bought my girlfriend a Wacom Bamboo CTH-470 recently and it is running well after installing wacom-dkms. I have now run into a wall that I don't know how to get around. The touch on the tablet will not turn off. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2. I have tried turning the touch off from the wacom settings in the settings menu. The pen and touch both work perfectly fine, it is just that the touch drives her insane when trying to draw in myPaint.

    my today question is: how do I manage a tablet (Gigabyte 1080) with an additional battery in Ubuntu ? The control bar shows two separate batteries but starts to suck all the energy from the secundary battery, not leaving any power in it and ruining it (if I don't remove it earlier), and then starts with the primary battery.   • Connecting to IPv6 hosts when mobile and on a Surface?

    Specifically, at my usual location, I have an IPv6 network which connects to the Internet via a static tunnel set up to Hurricane Electric's tunnel broker ( http://www.tunnelbroker.net/ ). This works essentially perfectly, allowing inbound and outbound connectivity. Now, however, I need to connect back to host(s) on that network over IPv6 from mobile tablet(s); meaning the conditions are such that there is no guarantee or even likelihood of native IPv6 support where it happens to be at any given time, and the IPv4 address of the tablet will change on a fairly regular basis. The native Teredo support, as configured by default, functions well enough to let me ping my target hosts, but appears to have neither the reliability nor the throughput to support anything else; I have been unable to make any actual connections (trying a number of TCP-based protocols) using it. I had considered setting up an independent tunnel for the tablet(s), and using scripts to update the client endpoint IP address when it changes, but since both (a) many of the locations will be behind NAT devices over which I have no control, and (b) the option over which I do have control is an AT&T Unite hotspot which does not offer protocol 41 forwarding or respond to ICMP on its public address, this approach does not seem viable. I am additionally constrained as the mobile tablet(s) in question are Surface RTs, and as such are incapable of running, for example, AICCU client software. What is my best option to pursue to obtain IPv6 connectivity in this scenario?

  • Is paper indispensable in a programmer's everyday work?

    As a programmer who work in a company whose vision is to make paperless office possible, is there any way I can work effectively while using less paper? I can list at least several kinds of papers I use quite often: Paper notebook, on which I do most of the pre-coding design work and ideas Books Temporary printouts of source code, though not so often (in color, with a 6 point font at 600 DPI) Sticky note, to remind myself of things that should be taken care of within a few days On the other hand, I also use a wiki and an office text editor. Once a while I would use a diagramming software to make a few flowcharts. Deeper questions: Is there a relationship between paper use and productivity? How can programmers help save the trees? Is paperless software development fundamentally different from paperless office? Related questions: Do you ever write code with pen and paper, and should we do it more often? What physical tools do you find useful to work as a programmer? What things are essential on a programmer's desk? Stuff every programmer needs while working Additional info, if it helps: Everyone has dual monitors. We have decent project management and issue tracking software (both web-based).
