  • Just want to send emails from my Ubuntu Server. What simple SMTP server solution to use?

    Basically I have a Ubuntu Server machine and I would like an idiot-proof solution for sending emails from my website that is also running in this same machine. My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail. Anyway to avoid the spam box? 4) The email sender was [email protected]. How do I change that? Thanks very much! -Sergio

  • Reserving an IP with Netgear router from Time Warner

    I tried everything but keep getting the following error: "Duplicated MAC address". Nothing is duplicated. I disconnected the PC that I would like to assign the IP. Basically this is important as I will configure some port forwarding and my notebook must always get the same IP from DHCP. This is called DHCP reservation but apparently is not working on this router. Has anyone being luck to have this working? The model is CG814WG and you have to click on LAN IP under web administration, -Sergio

  • Is it possible to be a Linux professional studying on your own?

    I read economics at university(nothing to see with linux, isn't it? :P). I have some basic knowledge about booting process, Linux Kernel compiling from source and stuff like that. But of course I have still much to learn sometimes some errors appears and "voila" I am lost. I had: Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse, Arch.. using Gentoo now. I'd like to know what you linux users, professionals, administrators... would think it is the best way to learn linux in a professional way. Is it worth studying it and passing the LPIC test enough to work in the linux world? or do I need going to IT uni? I've heard LFS is a good way of learning about linux, is that real? I've been thinking about getting to LFS learn about more deeply about the linux process and learning scripts. It is possible to do this way? if anyone has a tip or a good way of doing, maybe someone did it. Any tip is very welcome. Words from a person in love with linux. :D The best, Marc

  • How to change Linux hot key [migrated]

    I would like to know if it is possible to change the hot key on a Linux distribution. I have already tried to re-configure the hot keys in the virtual box preferences but i have not been able to accomplish the results i am looking for. I am currently running a Linux Antergos in a Virtual Box and i would like to change the hot key to match the ? key of Mac Book Pro to improve workflow and swap the workstation hot key to Ctrl. Overall i would like to be able to save files in the Virtual Machine using ?+s, ?+r Etc...

  • Tell postfix to merge three Authentication-Results:-Lines into one?

    I am running a postfix mta with debian wheezy. I am using postfix-policyd-spf-python, openkdim and opendmarc. When receiving e-mails from google (google apps with own domain) for example, the header looks like this: [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; dkim=pass reason="1024-bit key; insecure key" header.d=yyy.com [email protected] header.b=OswLe0N+; dkim-adsp=pass; dkim-atps=neutral<br> [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; spf=pass (sender SPF authorized) smtp.mailfrom=yyy.com (client-ip=2a00:1450:400c:c00::242; helo=mail-wg0-x242.google.com; [email protected]; [email protected]) [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; dmarc=pass header.from=yyy.com<br> [...] This means any of these programs creates it's own Authentication-Results:-Line. Is it possible to tell postfix to merge this into one single Authentication-Results:-Line? When I send an e-mail to google, it says: [...] Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as permitted sender) [email protected]; dkim=pass [email protected]; dmarc=pass (p=NONE dis=NONE) header.from=xxx.com [...] And this is exactly what I want.   • Maintenance Plan Reporting - Append To File - Clean Up?

    Background: (SQL Server 2005, Standard Ed.) I have a maintenance plan running backups, taking a full backup 1/day, and t-log every 15 minutes. I have it set to create a text file report of each run, but that creates A LOT of files on the file server. These are hard to sort through, which makes them less useful. Question: There is an option in "Reporting and Logging" settings for appending all logs together, but how do you clean this out? If you're appending to the same log file every time, how should you make sure this file doesn't grow indefinitely? Is there a build-in function to clean out portions of appended logs like there is for cleaning out individual old log files?

  • Target line parameters for shortcuts in Windows Explorer?

    I am using Windows 7 and I am looking for a list of the different parameters to use in the Target line of a shortcut in Windows Explorer. For example: /n forces it to open a new window, even if it duplicates a window that is already open. /e uses Windows Explorer view (multi-paned) /root,X restricts Explorer to showing only the contents of file folder X (and its sub-folders) /select,Y automatically selects Y (either a file or folder). What other parameters exist? I have been searching online and cannot find anything.

  • How do I set up a shared directory on Linux?

    I have a linux server I want to use to share files between users in my company. Users will access the machine with sftp or secure shell. Here is what I have: cd /home ls -l drwxrwsr-x 5 userA staff 4096 Jul 22 15:00 shared (other listings omitted) I want all users in the staff group to be able to create, modify, delete any file and/or directory in the shared folder. I don't want anyone else to have access to the folder at all. I have: Added the users to the staff group by modifying /etc/group and running grpconv to update /etc/gshadow Run chown -R userA.staff /home/shared Run chmod -R 2775 /home/shared Now, users in the staff group can create new files but they aren't allowed to open the existing files in the directory for edit. I suspect this is due to the primary group id associated with each user which is still set to be the group created when the user was created. So, the PGID of user 'userA' is 'userA'. I'd rather not change the primary group of the users to 'staff' if I can help it but if it is the easiest option, I would consider it. And, a variation on a theme, I'd like to do this same thing with another directory but also allow the apache user to read files in the directory and serve them. What's the best way to set this up?

  • Do I need to recreate statistics if I had to drop them to add a foreign key

    I have a database which had all it's foreign-key relationships dropped at some unknown time in the past (don't ask). I have an old copy of the database which isn't good to restore from, but the schema has the relationships. I'm working from that to create a script to restore the keys. In updating the tables, I've had to drop statistics from several tables. Do I need to manually recreate those, or can I just run the statistics update procedure when all the tables are updated?

  • nginx config woes for multiple subdomains & domains

    I'm finally moving away from Apache and I've got the latest development version of nginx running on a fully updated Ubuntu 10.04 VPS. I've got a single dedicated IP for the box (1.2.3.4) but I've got two separate domains pointing to the server: www.example1.com and www.example2.net. I would like to map the fallowing relationships between urls and document roots in the config: www.example1.com / example1.com -> /var/www/pub/example1.com/ subdomain.example1.com -> /var/www/dev/subdomain/example1.com/ www.example2.net / example2.net -> /var/www/pub/example2.net/ subdomain.example2.net -> /var/www/dev/subdomain/example2.net/ Where the name of the requested subdomain is a folder under /var/www/dev/. Ideally a request for a non-existent subdomain(no matching folder found) would result in a rewrite to the public site (eg: invalid.example1.com -- www.example1.com) however a mere "404 Not Found" wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. It would also be nice if I didn't need to modify the config every time I mkdir a new subdomain folder - even better if I don't need to edit it for a new domain either...but now I'm getting greedy... :p Although in my defense Apache did all of this with a single directive. Does anyone know how I can efficiently mimic this behavior in nginx? Thanks in advance, Peter Hanneman

  • High speed network configuration

    Sorry if this seems to be a stupid question, I'm not sure how to specify what I want to know when checking google. I will have 2 or 3 devices pumping out data on a 100Base-T port. The combined data rate of all devices is about 15KB/S which exceeds the optimal 100Base-T channel capacity (12KB/S), but well within the realms of a 1000Base-T connection. Each device will be sending a burst of data in the form of an FTP transfer to a common, single host computer in a sequential manner ie: Device A establishes FTP connection and transfers data Device B establishes FTP connection and transfers data Device C establishes FTP connection and transfers data It may be that the A&B, B&C and C&A transfers overlap in the time domain to some extent. There will be minimal traffic going back from the computer to each device (in general what ever is needed to support the FTP transfers), and the network will be dedicated to transferring data between these devices and the host computer. Is it possible to use a switch to combine the multiple incoming 100Base-T streams into a single outgoing 1000Base-T stream? if so what features in a switch should I be looking for? Or would it be better to have 3 physical point-to-point 100Base-T dedicated connections between each device and the host computer? (thus having at least 3 physical Ethernet interfaces on that computer) Note that I can't change the interface on the devices, but I am free to choose the network and host computer configuration.   • How can I install git on RHEL 6?

    I'm trying to install Git on a RHEL6 development server, I have experience with Ubuntu but this is my first time working with RHEL (I'm a developer trying to fill in for a recently departed Linux Sysadmin). I've set up two additional repos (EPEL and IUS) for other packages needed for a Magento install. Output of yum repolist: [root@box]# yum repolist Loaded plugins: product-id, security, subscription-manager Updating certificate-based repositories. repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,841 ius IUS for RHEL 6Server - x86_64 135 Most of what I've read indicates a simple 'yum install git' should work with EPEL enabled, but I get the dreaded [root@box]# yum install git Loaded plugins: product-id, security, subscription-manager Updating certificate-based repositories. Setting up Install Process No package git available. Error: Nothing to do Same goes for git-daemon, etc. I've tracked down a number of git RPMs such as this one at repoforge but they require a train of dependencies that seems to never end. I've also toyed with compiling it manually but the rabbit hole to get make working seems to go even deeper. I'm convinced there's a simple oversight somewhere keeping me from being able to install from the EPEL repo, but I'm a rookie at all this. Thanks in advance for help/pointers/additional resources.

  • How secure is using "Normal password" for SMTP with connection type = STARTTLS?

    I'm using an email client for the first time - for the most part I've always used gmail via the web interface. Now I'm setting up thunderbird to connect to an email server of my own (on my own server, own domain name, etc). The server machine (and the email server on it) was preconfigured for me. Now i figured out away by which I'm able to send and receive email, but I noticed that in the outgoing and incoming servers section, the connection type was STARTTLS (and not SSL/TLS), and the Authentication Type was "Normal Password". Does this mean that the password will be sent across in plain text? I'm very paranoid about security - its the only way that it works for me. Can someone please post links that explain how SMTP (my outbound server) and IMAP (my inbound server) servers work, and what connection type means what? Thanks!   • Windows 7 Desktop as Bluetooth Mixer

    I would like to stream all the audio from my Droid X2 to my desktop running Windows 7 via bluetooth. When I pair the two devices I can make this work but the audio plays through the internal speakers. I am actually wanting to listen to everything through a pair of bluetooth headphones. The end result would be that I could listen to music from my phone but easily pause it to listen to audio from the desktop instead. So far I have not had any luck. I thought about connecting the line out to the line in so I could monitor the line in from my headphones. My current setup is wiring the phone to the line in and then monitoring the line in through the headphones. I'm just wanting to eliminate the wire and go wireless the whole way. Is there something in Windows that prevents it from taking an inbound audio stream and sending it out another device?

  • Using relative path in PHP.INI doc_root -- getting No Input File Specified -- running as fastCGI

    I'm attempting to run php-cgi under LightTPD on Windows with my doc_root set to one directory up (doc_root = "../Docs") -- however, I get "No input file specified". I've set cgi.fix_pathinfo, and all the other tricks I could find with no success. If I set doc_root to an absolute path, it works fine. How can I make this work? If any additional information is required, I'll gladly provide it. Thanks in advance.
