• PayPal IPN & ASP.NET MVC

  Hello - I have a strange problem that somebody can hopefully help me with. For a while now I have been using PayPal's IPN service for our website. In order to test it I have a port opened up on our firewall pointing to my machine. This has been working great with no problems at all. I recently upgraded to the RTM release of ASP.NET MVC and now things are not working. I can navigate to my IPN handler from the outside world so I know it's not my connection or a firewall issue. It simply refuses to recieve any PayPal IPN messages. I am puzzled why the page can be accessed yet the PayPal IPN server wont connect to it. I realize there could be a 1000 different reasons for this, but I am hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction!

• Why call autorelease for iVar definition in init method?

  Hi, I just familiarise myself with the CLLocationManager and found several sample class definitions that contain the following init method: - (id) init { self = [super init]; if (self != nil) { self.locationManager = [[[CLLocationManager alloc] init] autorelease]; self.locationManager.delegate = self; } return self; } - (void)dealloc { [self.locationManager release]; [super dealloc]; } I don't understand why the iVar would be autoreleased. Does this not mean it is deallocated at the end of the init method? I am also puzzled to see the same sample codes have the iVar release in the dealloc method. Any thoughts? '

• Why does a port occasionally stop listening? This happens only on occasion

  I have a Windows Service written in C# that listens on port 8591. I also have a web application hosted in IIS on the same server that makes request to the service. On occasion the port will stop listening and throws the following error: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8591". This happened 3 times in 2 months and just resolves itself. I can also fix it manually by restarting the service. I'm wondering if any one else has run into this problem and has possible suggestions to resolve. I'm a developer and have worked with our windows group extensively and they assure me there is no firewall or AV blocking the port on occasion. This is running on Windows Server 2008 R2. Very puzzled at what could be causing this to happen. Please let me know if you need more information.

• PHP CLI Application on Debian: why can't I output a line break?

  Hello! I have a really puzzling problem: I am writing a PHP CLI application running on a debian server. I am connected to the server via SSH, just the normal way. Everything runs as usual. Except the following: echo "My CLI fun\n\n"; echo "Is this."; Outputs on the SSH terminal, when executing the PHP script: My CLI funIs this. I am really puzzled as I have never had such a problem. The bash behaves normal in all other aspects. I already tried to output chr(10) and such, same problem. Does anybody have a clue?

But in this case: >> type(Decimal('0')).__name__ > type(9999.0).__name__ False Why is Decimal('0') > 9999.0 == True then? • Why is doing a top(1) on an indexed column in SQL Server slow?

  I'm puzzled by the following. I have a DB with around 10 million rows, and (among other indices) on 1 column (campaignid_int) is an index. Now I have 700k rows where the campaignid is indeed 3835 For all these rows, the connectionid is the same. I just want to find out this connectionid. use messaging_db; SELECT TOP (1) connectionid FROM outgoing_messages WITH (NOLOCK) WHERE (campaignid_int = 3835) Now this query takes approx 30 seconds to perform! I (with my small db knowledge) would expect that it would take any of the rows, and return me that connectionid If I test this same query for a campaign which only has 1 entry, it goes really fast. So the index works. How would I tackle this and why does this not work? edit: estimated execution plan: select (0%) - top (0%) - clustered index scan (100%)

• Doesn't JavaScript support closures with local variables?

  I am very puzzled about this code: var closures = []; function create() { for (var i = 0; i < 5; i++) { closures[i] = function() { alert("i = " + i); }; } } function run() { for (var i = 0; i < 5; i++) { closures[i](); } } create(); run(); From my understanding it should print 0,1,2,3,4 (isn't this the concept of closures?). Instead it prints 5,5,5,5,5. I tried Rhino and Firefox. Could someone explain this behavior to me? Thx in advance.

• Unusual Subversion Folders Appeared After Update

  Hello Everyone, I have been using Subversion for about 2 years to manage a large C# project. On a recent Subversion update, a number of new folders were added to my source code folder: \conf \db \locks \hooks 35+ files were also added during the update, all appearing under the 4 new folders. I haven't changed any client (I use TortoiseSVN) or server software related to Subversion, so I'm puzzled why these folders and files were suddenly introduced. It also seems strange that files seemingly related to the internal workings of Subversion are now part of my source code repository. Can anyone shed some light on why this happened? Is it done in runtime or generates a file? How do you know its behavior? And most importantly - what is the work flow of using such a framework (what is the step-by-step for creating a test). Can anyone explain? You can choose whichever framework you like for example, just say what it is.

• IEnumerable not null but calling Count() results in Exception

  I have code that's working beautifully on my development machine, but when deployed to the server is throwing null reference exception. So, I can't step through the code, but I've pinned down the culprit. But now I am puzzled. Here's the code. The question is below. Now here's the quandary.. The first line that sets the label returns False, so certs is not null. But the second line throws an null reference exception. How is this possible?

• Drupal does not recognize my website has been installed

  After a successful Drupal install, I was trying to follow the security recommendations and reverted the settings.php file to 444 permissions (read, read, read). Then, all of a sudden, right after doing that, Drupal does not recognize the installation process was completed. It went back to the install screen. Worst of all. I did chmod back to 666 (write, write, write) but it does not work any more. When I move forward as if I was going to install Drupal again, he tells me he does not have permissions to create the files folder under sites/default... But since the installation has already been completed... the files folder is already there... I am puzzled... Could it be some sort of server caching? Since this is one of my first adventures with a Linux server, I am a bit confused. Any help appreciated... Thanks.

• Maven best practice for generating artifacts for multiple environments [prod, test, dev] with CI/Hud

  I have a project that need to be deployed into multiple environments (prod, test, dev). The main differences mainly consist in configuration properties/files. My idea was to use profiles and overlays to copy/configure the specialized output. But I'm stuck into if I have to generate multiple artifacts with specialized classifiers (ex: "my-app-1.0-prod.zip/jar", "my-app-1.0-dev.zip/jar") or should I create multiple projects, one project for every environment ?! Should I use maven-assembly-plugin to generate multiple artifacts for every environment ? Anyway, I'll need to generate all them at once so it seams that the profiles does not fit ... still puzzled :( Any hints/examples/links will be more than welcomed. As a side issue, I'm also wondering how to achieve this in a CI Hudson/Bamboo to generate and deploy these generated artifacts for all the environments, to their proper servers (ex: using SCP Hudson plugin) ?

• Rendering inconsistencies in Internet Explorer

  Hello, I have some weird problem in rendering some xhtml in IE 8 http://img709.imageshack.us/i/scrj.png/. Here is the screenshot. As shown the greet me submit button is higher than the text field. Which is kind of odd. I checked with some other browsers and it works fine, it also works fine on Windows 7 with IE 8. • Windows equivalent of inb(), outb(), low level i/o

  I have some Linux code that monitors our hardware by collecting temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds, from the motherboard using inb(), outb(), inl(), etc. low level i/o functions. My challenge is to port that code over to run under Windows as a simple console app. But am puzzled in what functions Win32 (or .NET) provide that allow me permission to access direct memory mapped ports. I don't want to code a system driver either. My Windows tool preference is VS2008. (fyi) Is this possible?

• Creating a form on non-gui thread

  You can't access gui controls from a thread they were not created on, at least so says the message of an exception that is sometimes raised when you do it. Recently I was puzzled by seeing that forms created on background threads work just fine. My mental model was that all actions initiated by UI input is handled on the GUI thread. Clicking on a button on such a form should raise the dreaded exception (the form and all its controls were created on a background thread not the gui thread), but it doesn't. • DB2 increase bufferpool size and compressed tables not equal better performance. Why?

  Hi, I’m working on tuning and increasing the performance of my IBM DB2 version 9.7 database. I’ve been searching around the net for the last couple of days and learned that if I created my tables in COMPRESS mode and created one more bufferpool and set both of them to access 1024mb, then the performance in my queries should increase because of the less I/Os to the disks. However, when I run my time analysis, the performance Decrease. I added the new additions to my regular database with the indexes I’ve used all the time. Each time I search google I come up with the statement that: Increased bufferpool size and several bufferpools AND a table compression SHOULD prove to get better performance. I’m very puzzled about the total unexpected result. Are there some tuning mechanisms I’ve forgot or does anyone have a explanation for this odd behavior? Sincerely Mestika

  I am a little bit puzzled about something. I am creating a ASP.NET MVC eCommerce application and currently I have written all the back end in ASP.NET MVC. I was thinking if its better to write all the management in WPF instead of HTML, as its probably even less prone to be exploited by hackers. I am a Windows user so I am not really bothered about using Linux/Mac at the moment so I am quite aware that having all the back-end written in HTML will allow users to have access to the admin area using other OS. I would like to see what are the advantages and disadvantages of having WPF to manage the content of the website as its probably much easier to develop and manage (think about Live Writer).

• Jquery Accordion and multiple slideshows

  I've been using a lot of slideshows recently on my sites and one thing thats puzzled me is using more than one slideshow per page. I'm currently working on my own site, experimenting with Jquery Accordion. I've managed to adopt a very simple javascript slideshow, see below: http://dvpwebdesign.com/test/accordion/blank.html However i'm unable to either incorporate or use a different multiple slideshow plugin. I dont need slideshow navigation, so the The Cycle plugin works really well and i know you can use multiple slideshows. But if i either use Cycle alongside the current javascript slideshow, or only use the Cycle slideshow to avoid any possible conflict, the Accordion menu stops working. I just cant see what i am doing wrong, can anyone help?

  Hey guys, I was looking at the Twitter for iPhone app and was puzzled. First of all, there are normal words looking like links inside. Second, when I touch those link-like words, the text view (or maybe web view) jumps to the corresponding part below (yes, it doesn't open Safari, it just jumps to the text within that text/web view) Now I want to implement the same effects. • PHP/CSS issue, one account has a fine style, the other is weird

  Hello there, I am currently having the above issue, where on a CMS called phpVMS a CSS displaying front page works fine on the first account, but does not on any other user accounts. This only applies to the frontpage, and all of the tags seem to be closed. The top half of the picture is how it should display and how it displays for user GSM1001. The bottom half is for users GSM1002 upwards. I am really puzzled and I'd appreciate any suggestions. I am happy to post snippets of the code here or on jsFiddle if you require to see it. • Any alternative to jQuery change() to detect when user selects new file via dialog box in IE8?

  I am unable to detect when input type="file" changes its value after user selects file and the dialog box closes. $('.myInput').change(function(){ alert($(this).val()); }) Above jQuery code works perfectly in all browsers apart from IE. For some reason IE detects the change only after input field loses focus. Is there a way to detect the change immediately after dialog box closes? Or maybe to force input field to lose focus after dialog box closes so IE can detect it? I'm puzzled. Thanks for any help.
