  • Why did Steve Sanderson in his "Pro ASP.NET MVC 2 Framework" book change an example IoC container?

    - by rem
I like Steve Sanderson's "Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework" book. It helped me a lot. I have been waiting for its new edition and it is ready now, as we can see in this Steve's blog post It is updated a lot taking into account all new features of ASP.NET MVC 2, .NET 4 and Visual Studio 2010. In addition, "SportsStore" tutorial of this edition uses Ninject instead of first edition's Castle Windsor for DI. I wonder, why? Does it mean that Castle Windsor became a little outdated?

  • Does a HDMI-to-DVI (dual link) adapter exist? I don't care about the price

    - by alex k
My monitor supports full-resolution display (2560x1440) only when connected to through either the DVI-D dual link port, or the DisplayPort. My laptop, though, has neither of these two kinds of output. Instead, all it's got is a HDMI port (which is version 1.3, and I also read that the laptop's graphics chipset supports 2560x1440 at 60Hz). So I'm wondering whether anyone has ever seen an HDMI-to-DVI dual link adapter, which will carry my ultra-highres signal to the monitor I just bought. So far I haven't seen any, and don't even know whether such an adapter (which I understand would have to be active, USB-powered and expensive (but I don't care)) exists.

  • getting started with Google Closure if you don't care about minifying/compiling?

    - by Tim
If you don't care about minifying your code, is there a way to get started using the Google Closure library without having to set up a subversion client and use the compiler? The Notepad sample program on Google's website refers to <script src="closure-library/base.js" > </script > Can you simply download closure-library/base.js somewhere and start playing with the UI examples? The Closure Lite quick-start version doesn't appear to include goog.ui

  • Why is lassoing ink in OneNote so slow in general? Doesn't anyone care?

    - by GuoLiang Oon
Now I understand that this is especially an (known) issue in the OneNote 2013 preview and that it will probably be fixed in the final release. But lassoing in OneNote 2010 was no sprightly affair either. I'm just perplexed really, why on earth is there such an issue? Is lassoing intrinsically computationally expensive? OneNote would be soooooooooooo much more useful if there's no lasso lag. And doing a laggy lasso on tablet pcs with weak processors is just so much worse. Or do most folks just don't use the lasso feature much? I use it primarily to shrink intermediate calculations for future retrieval.

  • What Is The Proper Laptop Battery Care While Running Laptop Solely On Battery?

    - by Boris_yo
Because of convenience, I had to move my laptop to another room away from room where I always ran laptop on UPS without using battery. Since so far I always run laptop on battery, I question the proper usage to prolong battery life. Currently I run laptop on battery with power supply so battery is constantly being charged until it is full 100% and when it is, I disconnect power supply and continue working until battery meter shows 10% remaining. That's when I plug in power supply and let it charge until 100% once again while I work. But it takes a lot of time to fully charge laptop while working since my power supply is 60W which should be the reason of such slow charge and I think the kind of charger that I use is express charger. The thought of charging laptop until full, all while doing my work makes me think that if it takes way more time to charge, it might keep battery running warm for the period of charging time which brings me to question about whether I should keep running laptop as I've described above or it would be better to leave power supply constantly connected to laptop to keep battery between 99%-100%? On one hand it won't keep battery warm but it will try to frequently supply charge to battery once it gets 99% to replenish charge to 100% (which might reduce battery life?). On the other hand if I'll keep working solely on battery and recharge it when below 10%, the battery will get warm but only when charged. Can anybody suggest the correct way of running laptop on battery to ensure better battery life? Dell Latitude E6420 Windows 7 64-bit

  • Recoomend company to take care or webserver and wordpress management?

    - by javipas
I'm interested in setting up a professional WordPress site but I'd like to explore the pssibilities to leave the management of the webserver and even WordPress' management to a company that guarantees great availability, performance of the site (load times, security) and even SEO. My site is currently running on other platform but I plan on a migration on the next 4 weeks. I've done this usually, but I'd like to focus on the content, so I don't have to mess with webserver/mysql/php configs in order to get nice performance. Is there some (maybe hosting) company that is dedicated to this? Would it be better to hire a sysadmin with experience in those matters?

  • Things to take care while sending the username and password using Ajax request ?

    - by Anil Namde
Normally we have login page with username, password filed and signin button. Using the normal form based approach we send the data on and page gets post back. Now i would like to change this using the Ajax. As Ajax too using the normal HTTP so i guess nothing in different from the existing workflow barring postback right ? Now my question is is what all securities issues can be there? and what care should be taken for doing so ? Should we encode data using say base64 or so before sending using Ajax?

  • Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?

    - by Tori Wieldt
What a difference a year makes, indeed. Steve Harris, Senior VP, App Server Dev, Oracle and Adam Messinger, VP, Fusion Middleware Group, Oracle presented an informative keynote at the TheServerSide Java Symposium today. With a title "Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?" you know things are going to be interesting (see Aeon Flux if you don't get the title reference). What a YearThey started with a little background, explaining that the reactions to Oracle's acquisition of Sun (and therefore Java) one year ago varied greatly, from "Freak Out!" to "Don't Panic." From the Oracle perspective, being the steward of and key contributor to Java requires a lot of sausage making.  They admitted to Oracle's fair share of Homer Simpson-esque "D'oh" moments in the past year, which was complicated by Oracle's communication style.   "Oracle has a tradition has a saying a few things and sticking by then, in contrast to Sun who was much more open," Adam explained. "We laid out the Java roadmap and are executing on it, and we hope that speaks to our commitment."Java SEAdam talked about having a long term perspective on the Java language (20+ years), letting ideas mature in more experimental languages, then bringing them into Java. Current priorities include: JVM convergence (getting the best features of JRockit into Hotspot); support of parallel/multi-core programming, and of course, all the improvements in JDK7. The JDK7 Developer Preview is underway (please download now and report bugs!). The Oracle development team is also working on Lambda and modularity (Jigsaw) for SE 8. Less certain, but also under discussion are improvements for Java SE 9. Adam is thinking of it as a "back to basics" release. He mentioned reworking JNI, improving data integration and improved device support.Java EE To provide context about Java EE, Steve said Java EE was great at getting businesses on the internet. The success of Java EE resulted in an incredible expansion of the middleware marketplace for developers and vendors.  But with success, came more. Java EE kept piling on capabilities, but that created excess baggage.  Doing simple things was no longer so simple. That's where Java community is so valuable: "When Java EE was too complex and heavyweight, many people were happy to tell us what we were doing wrong and popularize solutions," Steve explained. Because of that feedback, the Java EE teams focused on making things simple again: POJOs and annotations, and leveraging changes in Java SE.  Steve said that "innovation doesn't happen in expert groups, it happens on the ground where developers are solving problems," and platform stewards need to pay attention and take advantage of changes that are taking place.Enter the Cloud "Developers are restless, they want cloud functionality from their own IT dept" Steve explained. With the cloud, the scope of problem has expanded to include the data center itself, with multiple tenants. To move forward, existing APIs in Java EE need to be updated to be tenant-aware, service-enabled, and EE needs to support various styles of deployment. The goal is to get all that done in Java EE 8.Adam questioned Steve about timing and schedule. "Yes, the schedule is aggressive, but it'll work" Steve said. Then Adam asked about modularization. If Java SE 8 comes out at the end of 2012, when can Java EE deliver modularization? Steve suggested that key stakeholders can come with up some pre-SE 8 agreement on how to expose the metadata about modules. He then alluded to Mark Reinhold and John Duimovich's keynote at EclipseCON next week. Stay tuned.Evil Master PlanIn conclusion, Adam finally admitted to Oracle's Evil Master Plan: 1) Invest in and improve Java SE and EE 2) Collaborate with the community 3) Broaden the marketplace for Java development. • Why should I care about RVM's Gemset feature when I use Bundler?

    - by t6d
I just don't get it. I thought, Bundler was developed to resolve version conflicts between gems. So that I just have to require "bundler/setup" and everything is fine, knowing that Bundler will load the correct versions of all my gems and their dependencies. Now, RVM is great for managing multiple Rubies, I know, but why should I care about the Gemset feature? Do I miss something here? Can it make my development even easier? Maybe, some of you can give me some hints on the perfect RVM + Bundler workflow for both, development and production. I also don't know when RVM starts switching to another Ruby. I know that I can have an .rvmrc file in my project, but do I have to cd to this directory so that the switch happens? Furthermore, I usually use Passenger for development since, thanks to the Passenger.prefpane, integration in Mac OS is great. Can I still do that with RVM or is there a better way to do it? Does Passenger recognize .rvmrc files and switch to the correct Gemset?

  • compare two windows paths, one containing tilde, in python

    - by Steve Cooper
I'm trying to use the TMP environment variable in a program. When I ask for tmp = os.path.expandvars("$TMP") I get C:\Users\STEVE~1.COO\AppData\Local\Temp Which contains the old-school, tilde form. A function I have no control over returns paths like C:\Users\steve.cooper\AppData\Local\Temp\file.txt My problem is this; I'd like to check if the file is in my temp drive, but I can't find a way to compare them. How do you tell if these two Windows directories; C:\Users\STEVE~1.COO\AppData\Local\Temp C:\Users\steve.cooper\AppData\Local\Temp are the same?

  • In what programing language are the things i actualy care about writin? [closed]

    - by David
To be more specific and less subjective: In what language are video games like Halo 3/COD 4/ mario cart written? Microsoft word for windows? for mac? The animation software used by big movie studios to make movies like toystory and monsters inc? The software that helps pilots control the F22 raptor? The software that watches the stock market? The software in the computer in my car? The software that makes the internet work? (this one is a bit vague, if more specificness is needed then google specifically) robots?

  • What do you do when your boss doesn't care about code quality?

    - by Chad Johnson
My boss (a proprietor) is a developer like me. He comes, however, from a C background and severely lacks knowledge of the benefits of proper object-oriented design. That, or he simply ignores them. So my co-worker developed this feature prototype in a week, and it's not release-ready--at least not from a good code standpoint. It works; it does the job--but it'sa freaking prototype. It's totally not scalable. My boss wants to wow clients and "just get the feature out." I understand that. But, we could take two weeks and finish this shit up, or we could take three and finish this shit up AND do it so that it's scalable. I just KNOW we are going to want to add onto this feature in the coming months, and then, a customer is going to "need it in a week," and so even though we've agreed to refactor when we want to add onto the feature, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! This ALWAYS happens. I'm the code quality assurance guy, but my boss seems to see me as a radical and thinks I just waste time, whereas I actually am trying to follow good, known solid design patterns. He just wants his stinking feature though, and he doesn't want to spend the time or money to do things well. He pretty much listens to what I have to say, and then he ultimately just makes the decision to take the shortest path (which cuts corners a lot). I often develop large, important features for our software. THOSE THINGS TAKE TIME! They're not happy with the time it's taken with past projects, though, but the features I've put in all work really damn well and are very scalable. How do you all deal with this kind of situation?

  • Care to be taken when serving static content (JS, CSS, Media) from different domain?

    - by Aahan Krish
Let me try to explain by example. Say website is hosted at example.com (NOT www.example.com). In order to serve static content cookie-free, I've chosen to use a different domain example-static.com. Now, lets consider that my static content is currently served like this: http://example.com/js/script.js http://example.com/css/style.css http://example.com/media/image.jpg ** Now I create a CNAME record aliasing example-static.com to my main domain i.e. example.com so that the static content is served as such: http://example-static.com/js/script.js http://example-static.com/css/style.css http://example-static.com/media/image.jpg ** Is that all I have to do? Will all browsers execute JavaScript files and load web fonts without any security concerns? OR should I be using some .htaccess rules to modify header information and the like? PS: It would be great if you can provide what rules should be added, if need be.

  • Do I have to store a TcpClient even though I only care about its stream?

    - by mafutrct
A new instance of a TcpClient connects to a remote host. Its NetworkStream is retrieved and stored. Do I have to store the TcpClient itself as well to make sure it is not garbage collected? In case you're going to answer "You have to store it to be able to dispose it": In my specific case, the TcpClient is usually living for a long time (app lifetime), so disposing it is not really a must. However, I agree that, in general, it has to be stored just to be able to call Dispose.
