  • Strange problem publishing a fresh Ruby on Rails 3 application on localhost (Apache, Passenger and VirtualHosts)

    I recently created a new Ruby on Rails 3 application locally on a Mac OS, named "test". Since I use apache2, in the private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf I set the VirtualHost for the "test" application: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName test.pjtmain.localhost:443 DocumentRoot "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public" RackEnv development <Directory "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public"> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> # SSL Configuration SSLEngine on ... </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName test.pjtmain.localhost DocumentRoot "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public" RackEnv development <Directory "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public"> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> Of course I restart apache2, but trying to access to http://test.pjtmain.localhost/ I have this error message from: FIREFOX Oops! Firefox could not find test.pjtmain.localhost Suggestions: * Search on Google: ... SAFARI Safari can’t find the server. Safari can’t open the page “http://test.pjtmain.localhost/” because Safari can’t find the server “test.pjtmain.localhost”. I have other RoR3 applications setted like that above in the httpd.conf file and all them work. What is the problem (maybe it is not related to apache...)? Notes: 1. I'm currently stuck on the basics of basics: How to install and configure sql server How to connect to it I installed Sql Server through Web Platform Installer, and have Visual Studio 2008 installed. Still, I can't understand how to connect to my server: I see that the SQL service itself (SQLEXPRESS) is running in both in services.msc and Sql Server Configuration Manager I try to connect to it via the Management Studio, but I don't understand what to do.   • Dell Latitude will not boot after fresh Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Black screen

    I have an old dell latitude d610 that I've just installed ubuntu 12.10 onto, and now unfortunately it will not complete booting up. The screen flashes purple but then fades out and dies. I'm fairly sure there is an issue with graphics drivers, as I had to turn on "nomodeset" in the options when installing off a DVD to see the installer, but I'm very new to linux and don't know terribly much at all apart from what I've read on the net. I have been able to hold down shift and bring up GRUB, and entered into recovery mode, and when I enter into the low graphics mode, the xserver log file says it can detect a screen but found none with a useable configuration, then goes on to say a fatal server error has occurred and no screen have been found at all, telling me to check a log file at "/var/log/xorg.0.log" I have no idea how to check this specific log file! Attempting to actually go further than this in low graphics mode and restart the display simply artefacts the screen. It is all very strange and annoying because I did once by random have the machine boot completely for no apparent reason, but upon restarting the issue reoccurred.

    I have recently setup a dual boot windows 7 /Ubuntu 13.04. Problem: I installed eclipse from the Ubuntu software center. Eclipse opens fine, but when i attempt to access the help i get a "server error 500".. What i know: the help file is located locally and read via the browser.. any ideas?.. nb.. novice linux user, happy to try anything to provide more data, ppls just be specific (ie assume i know zilch..) update jun 30th.. Although not an answer to this question, i have patched a working solution by removing the version of eclipse supplied by the Ubuntu software center and installing from eclipse.org.. details at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2157452 thanks

  • Do I need to uninstall Ubuntu after fresh Windows 7 installation?

    I installed Ubuntu 12.04 from Windows 7 using Wubi. For reasons I won't elaborate here, I had to reinstall Windows 7. Now I want to uninstall Ubuntu. But there is no entry for ubuntu in Windows' Add/Remove Programs anymore. What I tried: running the Uninstall executable from Ubuntu's installation folder, which didn't do anything. delete the old installation folder No matter what I do Ubuntu continues to show up as a boot option together with Windows 7 whenever I start my machine. How do I completely get rid of the Ubuntu installation? Thanks.

  • Why is my fresh install of 12.04 running slow?

    Hey guys I'm a new linux user, I figured it would be the best for the laptop I just purchased because it's said to be faster than Windows 7. I'm currently dual-booting with Windows 7 Professial and Ubuntu 12.04. The laptop I am using is the LG X Note P210 Specs: Intel Core i5 470UM Dual Core clocked at 1.33GHz 12.5" HD LED LCD Screen at 1366 by 768 4GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz RAM Integrated Intel HD Graphics Card 4 Cell Battery with 3150mAh It comes loaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, it runs fine on that but my Ubuntu 12.04 runs slower than it and I don't understand why, it definitely has decent specs to run even a 64-bit operating system and do some gaming. Granted I know it's not the best but for a laptop it does the job so Ubuntu should work especially since it's said to make older units with worse specs run even better. I'm not all that familiar with coding and all so what are things I can do to optimize speed without overclocking? Boot up is fine, its program response time I believe, once Im in the actual OS, it lags, slows down, apps stop working, take forever to load up apps.

  • fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 using usb stick booted into tty1?

    I just installed ubuntu 12.04 alternate for the first time to give it a try using a usb stick burned with UnetBootIn. It installed without a problem. But it booted into a tty1 console without booting into a GUI. after loging into the tty1 console i typed 'unity'. it appeared that the system doesn't have unity desktop !!! How can it be solved ? My installation didn't show any error. Something worth mentioning: 1. during installation i had to choose an option saying 'customize the system to your needs' something like that i don't remember correctly with options 'SSH server','Mail Server', 'Ubuntu Desktop',.....,'Manual selection of packages' etc. I chose 'Ubuntu Desktop'. I haven't encountered something like this in ubuntu 11.04. to do an installation of alternate iso using UnetBootIn i used '12.04_Hdmedia' option of that software and had to change file extension of .ude to .udeb in /pool/main/l/linux that i found in Alternate ubuntu cdrom detect to go around with the cdrom detection problem. I have a 945G intel graphics.

    I have a reformatted Mac mini containing only a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.0.4. The Apple boot loader as been removed, so I can't hold down option, or the c key to get it to reboot form the install DVD. I do have an external drive (with both a usb and firewire interface available) with a bootable cloned OS X system on it. What steps do I need to go through to in order get grub to see the external drive, and to boot from it so that I can reformat the internal disk as an OS X drive?

  • BIOS root kit? Or, how do I fresh install a clean BIOS?

    So I was installing questionable operating system onto my EEE pc and it required me to downgrade the BIOS which I really am not an expert at. I used a patch and it appeared to work. Now, I'm paranoid about the downgrade because, honestly, I have no idea where the code came from or what could be in it. My question, then, is it possible to "start over" completely fresh with my BIOS? As in wipe out the possibly malicious BIOS and go back to the manufacturer-provided one? Has anyone done something similar to this? I just want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix to the EEE pc 1000 but I want to make sure the BIOS are secure. Any advice would help tremendously, or am I just being uber paranoid? BIOS are definitely not my strength.

  • How to force Windows 7 to ask for a "fresh" IP address from DHCP server?

    I'm troubleshooting a certain issue with my DHCP configuration, and need my Windows machine to ask for a "fresh" IP address, so I can see which address DHCP server gives by default. When I do ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew, Windows "proposes" its old IP address to the DHCP server (just checked with Wireshark, initial "DHCP Discover" message has Option-50 (requested IP address) with Windows machine's old IP). Tried disabling/enabling network adapter. Same behavior. Question: How can I force Windows to just ask for a new IP address, without proposing its old IP address.

    I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. Would you please advise me if generating a completely fresh page on history.go(-1) is possible? Thank you.

( means installation didn't format every thing - means installation was done on upgrade basis. ) Now, my system works with very low speed. Previous performance of mac mini was double as compare to current upgrade version. Now - my question are as follows. Does upgrade installation causes the performance in specially osx ? ( means anyone faced this kind of problem ? ) Or 10.6.2 snow leopard is heavy weight system for mac mini ? ( 2Ghz Intel core2duo,1GB RAM - is this configuration OK for snow leopard 10.6.2 ? ) Fresh install works better then upgrade in os x ?

  • What to do after a fresh Linux install in a production server?

    I havent had previous experience with the 'serious' IT scene. At work I've been handed a server that will host an application and MYSQL (I will install and configure everything), this will be a productive server. Soon I will be installing RHEL5 to it but I would like to know like, if you get a new production server, what would be the first 5 things you would do after you do a fresh Linux install? (configuration/security/reliability wise) EDIT: Added more information regarding the server enviroment and server roles: -The server will be inside my company's intranet/firewall. -The server will receive files (GBs) in binary code from another internal server. The application installed in this server is in charge of "translating" all that binary into human readable input. Server will get queried to get this information. -Only 2-3(max) users will be logging in. -(2) 145GB HDs in RAID1 for the OS and (2) 600GB HDs in RAID1 also for data. I mean, I know I may not get the perfect guideline. But at least something thats better than leaving everything on default.
