  I'm doing an svn diff on one of my files and svn is detecting it as a binary type. The file is readable plain text and I would like to be able to get a diff of this file. • Maintain set of local commits working with git-svn

  I am using git to develop against a project hosted in subversion, using git-svn: git svn clone svn://project/ My general workflow has been to repeatedly edit-and-commit on the master branch, then commit to the svn repository via: git stash git svn dcommit git stash apply One of the local modifications that 'stash' command is preserving, that I don't want to commit to the svn repository, is a changed database connection string. What's the most convenient way to keep this local change without the extra 'stash' steps? I suspect that something like 'stash' or 'quilt' is what I'm looking for, but I'm still new enough to git that I think I'm missing some terminology that would lead to the exact incantation. Update: The only solution I found that seems to avoid the git stash + git-svn action + git stash apply series was to update the git-svn ref manually: (check in local-only change to 'master', then...) $ cat .git/refs/master > .git/refs/remote/git-svn $ git svn fetch (with at least one new SVN revision) And that leaves the local-only commit as a weird (probably unsafe) commit between two svn revisions.

• svn:switch doesn't work with relative svn:external?

  We have a subfolder that is a relative svn external (../project/subfolder). In a fresh trunk checkout it points to (...TRUNK/project/subfolder) and in a fresh branch checkout it points to (...BRANCH/branchName/project/subfolder). But if you do a switch on the project containing the subfolder, the subfolder stays pointing at TRUNK. Alternately if you do a BRANCH checkout and switch to TRUNK it stays pointing at BRANCH. Shouldn't an svn:switch update relative externals? Is there some sort of recursive svn:switch I should be running?

• Are "skip deltas" unique to svn?

  The good folks who created the SVN version control system use a structure they refer to as "skip deltas" to store the revision history of files internally. A revision is stored as a delta against an earlier revision. However, revision N is not necessarily stored as a delta against revision N-1, like this: 0 <- 1 <- 2 <- 3 <- 4 <- 5 <- 6 <- 7 <- 8 <- 9 Instead, revision N is stored as a delta against N-f(N), where f(N) is the greatest power of two that divides N: 0 <- 1 2 <- 3 4 <- 5 6 <- 7 0 <------ 2 4 <------ 6 0 <---------------- 4 0 <------------------------------------ 8 <- 9 (Superficially it looks like a skip list but really it's not that similar - for instance, skip deltas are not interested in supporting insertion in the middle of the list.) You can read more about it here. My question is: Do other systems use skip deltas? Were skip deltas known/used/published before SVN, or did the creators of SVN invent it themselves?

• Test whether svn REPO changes are reflected in Working Copy

  Requirement Changes will be made to the REPO directory and this should get updated to wc(working copy) as opposed to the normal way of WC REPO. Senario: My svn repo- /var/www/svn/drupal My checkout-dir/working-copy- /var/www/html/drupalsite So I've done: edited post-commit hook to contain: "/usr/bin/svn update /var/www/html/drupalsite" I won't make any change to svn WC. I'll make changes to svn REPO- /var/www/svn/drupal. After changes are made to svn repo, run "svn commit /var/www/html/drupalsite". This will trigger the post-commit hook. This inturn will run "svn update /var/www/svn/drupal" and thus my WC will get updated with the changes of REPO. Query a. Would the above steps 1-3 help achieve my 'Requirement'? b. I'd need advise on how to test if the above setup works successfully or not. I'm at loss about the success of steps 1-3 the reason why query(a) is present. This is a bit more of a concern for me. NB: I'm new to subversion. Whatever I've configured till now have been done by reading articles online. Reason for query (b) is because I'm not into development. It seems to be a php drupal website and I happen to be setting it up. So I'm not aware as to how to make a "PROPER" change in REPO so that it gets reflected in WC. If reflected, my configs are right and the team can start on development. I manually put a random file/folder into REPO dir for seeing a change in WC and ran steps 1-3 but was of no avail and later on learned that it was NOT the way to make a change to a REPO. • git svn on multiple machines

  My repo is SVN and I'm using git-svn to interface with it which has been working out well. I'm working on the code base from a few different machines and appreciate some insight as to what the best setup might be for me going forward. I'd like to use git primarily but I need to commit to svn (via git svn dcommit) and pull from svn (git svn rebase) periodically from potentially any of the machines. Is it possible to perhaps have git svn setup on all but somehow push and pull changes between the instances? Or should I setup a bare repo and use that as the central git repo? How would that tie in to git svn? Any insight is appreciated.

• Is TortoiseSVN really this buggy?

  I have been using tortoise svn for a couple weeks now. I get errors very often. Almost everything I do creates an error. this is with repositories on the internet, locally on my machine or a machine on the network. So I started to keep track. Some examples are below. 12/31/2010 Can't move 'C:\Users\jisaacks\Desktop\my branch test.svn\tmp\entries' to 'C:\Users\jisaacks\Desktop\my branch test.svn\entries': The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. 01/04/2011 Commit failed (details follow): Server sent unexpected return value (405 Method Not Allowed) in response to MKCOL request for '/svn/kranichs-svn/!svn/wrk/b316f15e-0869-4644-9c53-87aa0103506b/branches' 01/06/2011 Can't move 'C:\Users\jisaacks\Desktop\DVD Catalog\vendors.svn\tmp\entries' to 'C:\Users\jisaacks\Desktop\DVD Catalog\vendors.svn\entries': The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. 01/06/2011 Can't move 'C:\Users\jisaacks\Desktop\DVD Catalog\cake\tests\test_app\views\layouts.svn\tmp\entries' to 'C:\Users\jisaacks\Desktop\DVD Catalog\cake\tests\test_app\views\layouts.svn\entries': The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. 01/06/2011 Commit failed (details follow): attempt to write a readonly database attempt to write a readonly database That last one about the read only database happens every time I commit. Say if I am working on the head revision (7) in a working copy. I make a change and commit it. It gives me this error. But if I look at the log it tells me that there is now a revision 8 (the commit I just made) but I am still on revision 7. So I need to run update to be on the current revision that I just commited. I hope I explained that clearly. Anyways with all these errors I wonder.. Is TSVN just this unstable, does everyone have these issues. Or is it just me? If just me, what could I be doing wrong?

• Problem with SVN filename encoding on Mac OS X

  I have some filename with some Unicode character in it. All filenames on Mac OS X are UTF8 encoded. Also $LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8. Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt ! Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt az@ip212 1058 (Integration) % As you can see, svn del does not recognize the filename. And even svn status gets confused about it. How can I fix this? I also tried with LC_CTYPE=$LANG LC_ALL=$LANG LC=$LANG but no change.

• "svn up" misses files!

  When trying to do an svn up I get the normal At revision XX even though some files are missing, the missing files do show when doing an svn list example: $ svn list > ConditionTest.java > persistence $ ls > persistence $ svn list > ConditionTest.java > persistence/ $ svn up > Is at revision 55 $ ls > persistence The file ConditionTest.java is not added unless manually running svn up ConditionTest.java What is up? Can't I trust svn anymore? Running svn, version 1.6.6 (r40053)

• SSH not working after installing SVN server on Debian

  Today I had to install SVN server on my Debian server. I used this tutorial (only I didn't do anything to connect to SVN through file://, http:// or https://, only svn:// and svn+ssh://). After I installed SVN server and configured it after that tutorial, I tried to connect to it. I could connect to it using svn:// protocol, but when I tried to connect using svn+ssh:// protocol, my servers SSH stopped responding. Even after I stopped SVN server and restarted SSH server I can't connect to it.

• SVN Mac - Stripping files of SVN meta data?

  I downloaded some source files on a Mac that were previously part of some working copy on the authors computer, I need to use these files in another repository but the SVN client "Versions" for Mac is picking up on the data from this old repository. I can't find the ".SVN" folder anywhere... any idea on how to "cleanse" these files so I can commit them to my repository?

• Using git-svn (or similar) just to help out with svn merge?

  Some complex subversion merges are coming up in my project: big branches that have been apart for a long time. Svn gives too many conflicts. Would it be any good to use git-svn just for the benefit of making the merge more manageable? (perhaps due to its powerful content model) Can you recommend other alternatives (eg. svk) to lessen the merge pain? Thanks in advance.

• Disable default error pages/error messages in IIS

  I have this web application (ASP.Net MVC 3) that on certain conditions returns a custom JSON string with a HTTP status code for an error (403, 415, 500). It is deployed on a Win 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 Initially I was gettting the standard HTML pages for the error instead of the JSON data. I removed the error pages for these errors in the app settings. But now my queries which should return some JSON data return a single error line. When the server gives me 403, I have the message "You do not have permission to view this directory or page." (simple line, no HTML around it). What can I do to deactivate this and finally get what the app is returning and not what the server wants to return?

• Fatal error on "mode 120000" file during git -> svn migration

  Following instructions from the following website: http://code.google.com/p/support/wiki/ImportingFromGit I'm trying to migrate a git repository to svn, but during the "git rebase master tmp" step it fails with the following error after apply the first few patches: $ git rebase master tmp First, rewinding head to replay your work on top of it... Applying: Imported Applying: Cleaned up the readme file Applying: fix problem with versions fatal: unable to write file foobar mode 120000 Patch failed at 0003 fix problem with versions When you have resolved this problem run "git rebase --continue". If you would prefer to skip this patch, instead run "git rebase --skip". To restore the original branch and stop rebasing run "git rebase --abort". I understand that 120000 may refer to a symlink, but Subversion has supported symlinks for a long time now. Subversion installed is 1.6.5, Git is 1.6.3.3. Running on Ubuntu Linux. The system is not running out of disk space and this operation is taking place within my home directory so permissions should not be an issue.

• "Automation Error Unspecified Error" ... err Error

  One the best error messages I have seen in a long time and I've seen some doozies!  There have been a fare few internal emails flying over the past week about issues with the template builder for MSWord not working. The issue has been found, so if you are hitting some behaviour similar to this: I have installed BI Publisher Desktop 11.1.1.6 for 32 bit. I have to load the data from XML to RTF Template. As per instruction when I click on tab Sample XML nothing happen. When I click on any other tab from BI Publisher menu, I am getting one error in pop-up menu “Automation Error Unspecified Error. I am unable to open any of the tab of BI Publisher menu including help. Have no fear, it's for once, not a BIP issue but a Microsoft one! Check here for what you need to do to resolve the error.

• Hudson: how do i use a parameterized build to do svn checkout and svn tag?

  I'm setting up a parameterized build in hudson v1.362. the parameter i'm creting is used to determine which branch to checkout in subversion. I can set my svn repository url like this: https://my.svn.server/branches/${branch} and it does the checkout and the build just fine. now I want to tag the build after it finishes. i'm using the SVN tagging plugin for hudson to do this. so i go to the bottom of the project config screen for the hudson project and turn on "Perform Subversion tagging on successful build". here, i set my Tag Base URL to https://my.svn.server/tags/${branch}-${BUILD_NUMBER} and it gives me errors about those properties not being found. so i change them to environment variable usages like this: https://my.svn.server/tags/${env['branch']}-${env['BUILD_NUMBER']} and the svn tagging plugin is happy. the problem now is that my svn repository at the top is using the ${branch} syntax and the svn tagging plugin barfs on this: moduleLocation: Remote -https://my.svn.server/branches/$branch/ Tag Base URL: 'https://my.svn.server/tags/thebranchiused-1234'. There was no old tag at https://my.svn.server/tags/thebranchiused-1234.   I quite often receive questions where users are looking for solution to following error: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error ’80040e07′ Syntax error converting datetime from character string. OR Microsoft SQL Native Client error ’80040e07′ Syntax error converting datetime from character string. If you have ever faced above error – I have a very simple solution for you. The solution is being very check date which is inserted in the datetime column. This error often comes up when application or user is attempting to enter an incorrect date into the datetime field. Here is one of the examples – one of the reader was using classing ASP Application with OLE DB provider for SQL Server. When he tried to insert following script he faced above mentioned error. INSERT INTO TestTable (ID, MyDate) VALUES (1, '01-Septeber-2013') The reason for the error was simple as he had misspelled September word. Upon correction of the word, he was able to successfully insert the value and error was not there. Incorrect values or the typo’s are not the only reason for this error. There can be issues with cast or convert as well. If you try to attempt following code using SQL Native Client or in your application you will also get similar errors. SELECT CONVERT (datetime, '01-Septeber-2013', 112) The reason here is very simple, any conversion attempt or any other kind of operation on incorrect date/time string can lead to the above error. If you not using embeded dynamic code in your application language but using attempting similar operation on incorrect datetime string you will get following error. Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string. Remember: Check your values of the string when you are attempting to convert them to string – either there can be incorrect values or they may be incorrectly formatted.   Hi I am importing my project to another machine on my LAN to the directory: /srv/svn/repos/my-repo where my-repo was created via svnadmin create option The permissions of /srv/svn/repos/my-repo are drwxr-xr-x 6 svn svn 4096 2010-04-19 17:30 my-repo I executed following command to import myProject files to my-repo on remote system sudo svn import -m "First import" myProject svn+ssh://[email protected]/srv/svn/repos/my-repo This command started 'Adding' files but gave following error after 'Adding' 7 files svn: Can't open file '/srv/svn/repos/baltoros-valgrind/db/txn-current-lock': Permission denied Any idea whats going on...? • Large svn external

  I have a project which uses a large library residing in its own repository. Using: Tortoise-SVN, the server is running an enterprise edition of VisualSVN The project itself has the "standard" structure: trunk tags branches In each branch, tag, and trunk is the library, set as an external (svn:external property). If I get the entire tree, I get the library several times, which is just getting too ridiculously repetitive. Is there a recommended structure for this? Or perhaps a way not to get all externals (because other externals are much smaller, easier to manipulate)?

• Svn log - svn: '.' is not a working copy

  I'm getting "svn: '.' is not a working copy" when i use the svn log command. I know that i need a working copy for the log command to work but can this be done directly on a repository? My goal is to display the information (change history) of a repository. I think updating the working copy whenever i need the log information is not a good solution. Is there an alternative solution to this or updating a working copy every time i need to log is the only way to go? Thanks in advance.

• Why is the meaning of “ours” and “theirs” reversed with git-svn

  I use git-svn and I noticed that when I have to fix a merge conflict after performing a git svn rebase, the meaning of the --ours and --theirs options to e.g. git checkout is reversed. That is, if there's a conflict and I want to keep the version that came from the SVN server and throw away the changes I made locally, I have to use ours, when I would expect it to be theirs. Why is that? • Is git svn rebase required before git svn dcommit?

  I'm reading about using git as an svn client here: http://learn.github.com/p/git-svn.html That page suggests that you do git svn rebase before git svn dcommit, which makes perfect sense; it's like doing svn update before doing svn commit. Then, I started looking at the documentation for git svn dcommit (I was wondering what the 'd' is about): http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-svn.html You have to scroll down a bit to see the documentation on dcommit, which says this: Commit each diff from a specified head directly to the SVN repository, and then rebase or reset (depending on whether or not there is a diff between SVN and head). This confuses me, because if you do as the first page says, there will be no changes to pull down from svn once the first part of dcommit finishes. I'm also confused by the part that talks about reset; isn't git reset for removing changes from the staging area? Why would rebase or reset follow (the first part of) a dcommit?
