  • google video chat works faster on local LAN

    Recently the internet speed on our college LAN has dropped drastically. ( Avg file download speed 13 Kbps :( ). However g-talk's video chat remains unbelievably fluent when done with someone within the college's LAN. However video chat is practically impossible for anyone else who is not in the college network. My college has a proxy server through which all computers inside the college connect to the internet. I suspect its due to the proxy server. Also how g-talk maintains video chat? Is it something in the mechanism that speeds up video chat between two clients with the same IP? Since all computers use the same proxy,their IP would appear to be the same to google server.

  • Make two servers talk to each other

    I have application written in GWT and hosted on Google AppEngine/Java. In this application user will have an option to upload video/audio/text file to the server. Those files could be big, up to 1gb or so and because GAE/J does not support large file I have to use another server to store those files. This would be easy to implement if there was no cross-domain security feature in browsers. So, what I'm thinking is to make GAE Server talk to my server (Glassfish or any other java servers if needed) to tell url to the file and if possible send status of uploaded file (how many percent was uploaded) so I can show status on clients screen. Here is what I'm thinking to do. When user loads GWT page that is stored on GAE/J he/she will upload file to my server, then my server will send response back to GAE and GAE will send response to the client. If this scenario is possible what would be the best way to implement GAE to Glassfish conversation?

  • Can't connect Gtalk from external services like meebo, or clients like iChat and Adium

    I've been using Gtalk from the beginning, usually with the clients Adium and iChat, but suddenly my account stop working for those clients and other external services like meebo.com, the weird thing (for me) is that my username and password is fine since I can login without problems to any other service like Gmail, and from there I can use talk, the windows official client also works, any clues on what's going on?

  • Instant Messenger proxy with web-based, searchable chat logs and mobile support

    Does anybody here know of a decent setup for having multiple computers and devices (iPhone/Android) logged into the same IM accounts (yahoo, gtalk, AIM) with consolidated web-based chat logs? I've tried/thought of a few approaches: IRC w/ IRSSI and bitlbee (was nice, but not a great solution for phones and chat logs were painful) Google Talk (would be great if I could just use this, but I need to support Yahoo - perhaps a Jabber relay?) Meebo (can this be used as a proxy?)

    I'm hoping to give a talk at RubyKaigi this year, and I'd like to know what makes a good talk proposal. RubyKaigi is a conference run by Ruby enthusiasts (as opposed to it being a trade conference, or an academic conference). The proposal form can be seen here. So far, my draft proposal about a program I'm working on mentions: What the program is useful for and why it is relevant. How it works. What topics it touches upon (such as metaprogramming and testing) Is there anything that I should mention in my proposal? Also, how thorough should I be in my "Details of your talk" section? Should I be exhaustive, or only have a couple of short paragraphs?

  • How to consistently enable screen sharing with iChat

    I am unable to consistently get screen sharing in iChat to work. When I select an online buddy, under the Buddies menu the options "Share my screen with Bob" and "Ask to Share Bob's Screen" are disabled. Sometimes starting a chat with that person will enable the screen sharing but often not. Once its enabled it works fine but I have no idea what the key is to getting it enabled. It seems fairly random when it works. This is over the public internet using Google Talk. Both ends are running OSX 10.5.

  • Pidgin not working with Gtalk

    I have downloaded latest Pidgin(version 2.10.6) for Windows and tried to gtalk account to it. It shows "not authorized" error. I have tried many options given in the net and its not working for me, Below are the values I have given, Basic Tab: Protocal: XMPP Username: <my username> Domain: gmail.com Password: <My Password> and enabled Remember password check box Advanced Tab: Connection security: Require Encryption (Default) Unhecked "Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams" (Default) Connection Port: 5222 (Default) Connect server: talk.google.com File Transfer proxies: proxy.eu.jabber.org (default) BOSH URL: <Empty> (default) I enabled two step verification process for my gmail account, So I created application specific password and given here. But Its not working. Please help me what could be the problem and how to resolve it?

  • C++: Most common way to talk to one application from the other one

    In bare outlines, I've got an application which looks through the directories at startup and creates special files' index - after that it works like daemon. The other application creates such 'special' files and places them in some directory. What way of informing the first application about a new file (to index it) is the most common, simple (the first one is run-time, so it shouldn't slow it too much), and cross-platform if it is possible? I've looked through RPC and IPC but they are too heavy (also non-cross-platform and slow (need a lot of features to work - I need a simple light well-working way), probably).

  • Android: how to have app talk to a web page, ie send gps location

    I'm trying to write a app, where a webpage will have a button that when press will give the GPS location of the phone. I was going to have the android app create a thread that waits on a scket connection. The issue is that 1. Getting the ip addrs of the phone 2. I was told this would really drain the battery I was also thinking about having the phone send the gps location to a webserver like evrry 10 seconds. This sort of seams like a waste of bandwidth. Is there a good way to do this?

  • Java EE @ No Fluff Just Stuff Tour

    If you work in the US and still don't know what the No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour is, you are doing yourself a very serious disfavor. NFJS is by far the cheapest and most effective way to stay up to date through some world class speakers and talks. This is most certainly true for US enterprise Java developers in particular. Following the US cultural tradition of old-fashioned roadshows, NFJS is basically a set program of speakers and topics offered at major US cities year round. Many now famous world class technology speakers can trace their humble roots to NFJS. Via NFJS you basically get to have amazing training without paying for an expensive venue, lodging or travel. The events are usually on the weekends so you don't need to even skip work if you want (a great feature for consultants on tight budgets and deadlines). I am proud to share with you that I recently joined the NFJS troupe. My hope is that this will help solve the lingering problem of effectively spreading the Java EE message here in the US. For NFJS I hope my joining will help beef up perhaps much desired Java content. In any case, simply being accepted into this legendary program is an honor I could have perhaps only dreamed of a few years ago. I am very grateful to Jay Zimmerman for seeing the value in me and the Java EE content. The current speaker line-up consists of the likes of Neal Ford, Venkat Subramaniam, Nathaniel Schutta, Tim Berglund and many other great speakers. I actually had my tour debut on April 4-5 with the NFJS New York Software Symposium - basically a short train commute away from my home office. The show is traditionally one of the smaller ones and it was not that bad for a start. I look forward to doing a few more in the coming months (more on that a bit later). I had four talks back to back (really my most favorite four at the moment). The first one was a talk on JMS 2 - some of you might already know JMS is one of my most favored Java EE APIs. The slides for the talk are posted below: What’s New in Java Message Service 2 from Reza Rahman The next talk I delivered was my Cargo Tracker/Java EE + DDD talk. This talk basically overviews DDD and describes how DDD maps to Java EE using code examples/demos from the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints project. Applied Domain-Driven Design Blue Prints for Java EE from Reza Rahman The third talk I delivered was our flagship Java EE 7/8 talk. As you may know, currently the talk is basically about Java EE 7. I'll probably slowly evolve this talk to gradually transform it into a Java EE 8 talk as we move forward (I'll blog about that separately shortly). This talk is basically about aligning EE 7 with the emerging JavaScript ecosystem (specifically AngularJS).   • Jabber Breaks in Empathy

    Using empathy in Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit), everything worked great after initial setup. But after disconnecting and reconnecting, any Jabber connection (GTalk and Facebook Chat) gives a 'network error'. Tried disabling accounts and only connecting to GTalk, same error. Tried removing all accounts, adding GTalk, same error. Upgraded to the dev version of Empathy, connected once, then after going 'offline' and reconnecting, same error. If it just didn't work, I'd wait for some kind of fix. But it did work, but only once per install. How does that happen? Anyone with this problem that solved it?

  • How not to show user name beside each consecutive message

    After years on GTalk, I recently switched to Pidgin for my IM needs. Almost all is ok with me, though there's on thing that bugs me. It shows the name of the author beside each consecutive message. e.g. joce: Hey joce: Long time no see! joce: How are you? Bob: Hey! Bob: Indeed! Instead of (as it is in GTalk): joce: Hey Long time no see! How are you? bob: Hey! Indeed! Is there a setting that I've missed or a plugin that could do that for me?
