  • Best practices or tools for installing a MS SQL database

    - by Maestro1024
Best practices or tools for installing a MS SQL database I have a MS SQL database designed with the MS SQL GUI database editor/Visual Studio. What is the best way to "install" that database on other systems. Said another way how should I ship this thing? I know I can save the scripts and set the primary/foreign keys with T-SQL but I suspect their is something better. I guess you could have people restore from backup but that does not seem very professional. What other choices are there and what are the pluses and minuses?

  • Hibernate/JPA DB Schema Generation Best Practices

    - by Bytecode Ninja
I just wanted to hear the opinion of Hibernate experts about DB schema generation best practices for Hibernate/JPA based projects. Especially: What strategy to use when the project has just started? Is it recommended to let Hibernate automatically generate the schema in this phase or is it better to create the database tables manually from earliest phases of the project? Pretending that throughout the project the schema was being generated using Hibernate, is it better to disable automatic schema generation and manually create the database schema just before the system is released into production? And after the system has been released into production, what is the best practice for maintaining the entity classes and the DB schema (e.g. adding/renaming/updating columns, renaming tables, etc.)? Thanks in advance.

  • Best Practices for a Web App Staging Server (on a budget)

    - by fig-gnuton
I'd like to set up a staging server for a Rails app. I use git & github, Cap, and have a VPS with Apache/Passenger. I'm curious as to the best practices for a staging setup, as far as both the configuration of the staging server as well as the processes for interacting with it. I do know it should be as identical to the production server as possible, but restricting public access to it will limit that, so tips on securing it only for my use would also be great. Another specific question would be whether I could just create a virtual host on the VPS, so that the staging server could reside alongside the production one. I have a feeling there may be reasons to avoid this, though.

  • Best Practices & Considerations when writing HTML Emails

    - by Jonathan Sampson
I've been developing websites for over a decade now, but quickly found that many of my habits in developing for the web are useless when developing for email clients. This has caused me an enormous amount of frustration, so I thought I would ask a question that would hopefully surface the best practices and necessary considerations for others like myself who may find themselves designing for gmail, outlook, etc. from time to time. Example: <style>...</style> vs inline CSS. In short: what transfers over from the web-world to the email-world, and what doesn't.

  • Spring+JSP url building best practices

    - by dotsid
I wonder if there are any good practices for addressing Spring controllers in JSP. Suppose I have controller: @Controller class FooController { // Don't bother about semantic of this query right now @RequestMapping("/search/{applicationId}") public String handleSearch(@PathVariable String applicationId) { [...] } } Of course in JSP I can write: <c:url value="/search/${application.id}" /> But it's very hard to change url then. If you familiar with Rails/Grails then you now how this problem resolved: redirect_to(:controller => 'foo', :action = 'search') But in Spring there is so much UrlMappers. Each UrlMapper have own semantic and binding scheme. Rails alike scheme simply doesn't work (unless you implement it yourself). And my question is: are there any more convenient ways to address controller from JSP in Spring?

  • Best practices to keep up a diverging branch of code

    - by JS_is_bad
I'm in a situation where some minor patches I've submitted to an open-source project were ignored or explicitly not accepted. I consider them useful, but more important is that I need the functionality they implement. I don't want to push my ideas and suggestions anymore to the main contributors, because I don't want to turn this into an ego issue. I've decided that my best bet would be just to use what I wrote for my own purposes. I don't want to fork the whole source code tree because I like how things are generally working, I'm just not happy with details. But I do realize that the project will evolve and I would like to use the new features that will eventually appear. I understand that I'll have to merge all new things into my own source tree. Are there any best practices for this scenario?

  • DKIM error: dkim=neutral (bad version) header.i=

    - by GBC
Ive been struggling the last couple of hours with setting up DKIM on my Postfix/CentOS 5.3 server. It finally sends and signs the emails, but apparently Google still does not like it. The errors I'm getting are: dkim=neutral (bad version) [email protected] from googles "show original" interface. This is what my DKIM-signature header look like: v=1; a=rsa-sha1; c=simple/simple; d=mydomain.com.au; s=default; t=1267326852; bh=0wHpkjkf7ZEiP2VZXAse+46PC1c=; h=Date:From:Message-Id:To:Subject; b=IFBaqfXmFjEojWXI/WQk4OzqglNjBWYk3jlFC8sHLLRAcADj6ScX3bzd+No7zos6i KppG9ifwYmvrudgEF+n1VviBnel7vcVT6dg5cxOTu7y31kUApR59dRU5nPR/to0E9l dXMaBoYPG8edyiM+soXo7rYNtlzk+0wd5glgFP1I= Very appreciative of any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem! • Providing DNS redirection to honeypot server for known bad domains

    - by syn-
Currently running BIND on RHEL 5.4 and am looking for a more efficient manner of providing DNS redirection to a honeypot server for a large (30,000+) list of forbidden domains. Our current solution for this requirement is to include a file containing a zone master declaration for each blocked domain in named.conf. Subsequently, each of these zone declarations point to the same zone file, which resolves all hosts in that domain to our honeypot servers. ...basically this allows us to capture any "phone home" attempts by malware that may infiltrate the internal systems. The problem with this configuration is the large amount of time taken to load all 30,000+ domains as well as management of the domain list configuration file itself... if any errors creep into this file, the BIND server will fail to start, thereby making automation of the process a little frightening. So I'm looking for something more efficient and potentially less error prone. named.conf entry: include "blackholes.conf"; blackholes.conf entry example: zone "bad-domain.com" IN { type master; file "/var/named/blackhole.zone"; allow-query { any; }; notify no; }; blackhole.zone entries: $INCLUDE std.soa @ NS ns1.ourdomain.com. @ NS ns2.ourdomain.com. @ NS ns3.ourdomain.com.                        IN            A                192.168.0.99 *                      IN            A                192.168.0.99

  • phpMyAdmin causes php-fpm worker to restart (502 Bad Gateway)

    - by rndbit
I am trying to set up a test site for myself. Everything works fine except phpMyAdmin. php installation loads my test site scripts, they work fine, however trying to load phpMyAdmin i get 502 Bad Gateway error. Judging from logs (that are not too helpful) it seems that php-fpm worker is crashing each time phpmyadmin is being accessed. No clue how or why.. • 502 Bad Gateway with nginx + apache + subversion + ssl (SVN COPY)

    - by theplatz
I've asked this on stackoverflow, but it may be better suited for serverfault... I'm having a problem running Apache + Subversion with SSL behind an Nginx proxy and I'm hoping someone might have the answer. I've scoured google for hours looking for the answer to my problem and can't seem to figure it out. What I'm seeing are "502 (Bad Gateway)" errors when trying to MOVE or COPY using subversion; however, checkouts and commits work fine. Here are the relevant parts (I think) of the nginx and apache config files in question: Nginx upstream subversion_hosts { server 127.0.0.1:80; } server { listen x.x.x.x:80; server_name hostname; access_log /srv/log/nginx/http.access_log main; error_log /srv/log/nginx/http.error_log info; # redirect all requests to https rewrite ^/(.*)$ https://hostname/$1 redirect; } # HTTPS server server { listen x.x.x.x:443; server_name hostname; passenger_enabled on; root /path/to/rails/root; access_log /srv/log/nginx/ssl.access_log main; error_log /srv/log/nginx/ssl.error_log info; ssl on; ssl_certificate server.crt; ssl_certificate_key server.key; add_header Front-End-Https on; location /svn { proxy_set_header Host $host; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; set $fixed_destination $http_destination; if ( $http_destination ~* ^https(.*)$ ) { set $fixed_destination http$1; } proxy_set_header Destination $fixed_destination; proxy_pass http://subversion_hosts; } } Apache Listen 127.0.0.1:80 <VirtualHost *:80> # in order to support COPY and MOVE, etc - over https (443), # ServerName _must_ be the same as the nginx servername # http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracNginxRecipe ServerName hostname UseCanonicalName on <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath "/srv/svn" Order deny, allow Deny from all Satisfy any # Some config omitted ... </Location> ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/subversion_error.log # Possible values include: debug, info, notice, warn, error, crit, # alert, emerg. LogLevel warn CustomLog /var/log/apache2/subversion_access.log combined </VirtualHost> From what I could tell while researching this problem, the server name has to match on both the apache server as well as the nginx server, which I've done. Additionally, this problem seems to stick around even if I change the configuration to use http only.

  • php-fpm or nginx: bad gateway

    - by John Tate
    I'm getting a bad gateway error all the sudden for a site. I didn't change the configuration for the site, I just added a new server config where I put them under /etc/nginx/servers and it stopped working. The new server works, and there is no conflict between the php-fpm listen addresses. server { listen 80; server_name obfuscated.onion; location = / { root /var/www/sites/obfuse; index index.php; } location / { root /var/www/sites/obfuse; index index.php; if (!-f $request_filename) { rewrite ^(.*)$ /index.php?q=$1 last; break; } if (!-d $request_filename) { rewrite ^(.*)$ /index.php?q=$1 last; break; } } error_page 404 /index.php; location ~* ^.+.(jpg|jpeg|gif|css|png|js|ico)$ { root /var/www/sites/obfuse; access_log off; expires 30d; } location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /var/www/sites/obfuse$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } } There is nothing unusual in php-fpm's log even when I raised the level to debug. • Recommendations or advice for shared computer control

    - by Telemachus
Basic scenario: we are a school (overwhelmingly Mac, some Windows machines via BootCamp), and we are considering using DeepFreeze to guard the state of our shared machines. We have roughly 250 machines that are either shared laptops (which move around quite a bit) or common desktops in public spaces. Obviously, we spend a lot of time maintaining the machines and trying to reverse the inevitable drift as people make changes to the computers. We would like to control the integrity of the build we initially put onto the machines without handcuffing users and especially without using Mac's Parental Control software. (We've had nothing but bad experiences with it.) We've been testing DeepFreeze, and so far it's very impressive. But I'm curious to hear if people who have used DeepFreeze or any similar software have any advice or tips. To get things started, I will post my own pros and cons. Pros: The state of the machine is frozen in our chosen state. All changes made to the machine after that disappear upon restart. (This frozen state really appears to cover everything. I have yet to do something to a test machine that isn't instantly healed.) Tons of trivial but time-consuming maintenance is gone in an instant. Also, lots of not-so-trivial breakage should be avoided. There are good options, however, that allow you to create storage spaces either globally or per user. (Otherwise, stored files disappear upon reboot. For some machines, this is a good option itself. Simply warn people: save externally or else; this machine is a kiosk, not your storage space.) Cons: Anytime we actually need to make a change (upgrade basic software, add a printer or an airport permanently, add new software), the process is a bit more complex. Reboot into a special mode (thaw state), make changes, reboot back into frozen mode. If (when?) we forget this, we will end up making changes that disappear after the next reboot. Users will forget to save files correctly (in the right place or externally), and we will have loud, unpleasant conversations explaining that we can't recover the document they worked on all afternoon yesterday. The machine rebooted. The file is gone. These are my initial thoughts, but I would love to hear from other people who have experience with DeepFreeze or any similar software. What should we be careful about? Do the pros outweigh the cons? What gains or problems am I not seeing? Thanks.

The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network). The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon. The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases. The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request. - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request. - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols. - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested. On my server... I changed my adminstrative username to something else and since then I've been inidated with these messages. I found on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787567(v=WS.10).aspx that the 4 means "Batch logon type is used by batch servers, where processes may be executing on behalf of a user without their direct intervention." which really doesn't shed any light on it for me. I checked the services and they are all logging in as local system or network service. Nothing for administrator. Anyone have any idea how I tell where these are coming from? I would assume this is a program that is crapping out... Thanks in advance!

  • why DKIM bad signature

    - by Ashish
Hi, I have setup a postfix mail receiving server. On this I am using DKIM milter to verify incoming mail DKIM signatures. From some email clients I am getting the following 'bad signature data' error: Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: (unknown-jobid) no signing domain match for `gmail.com' Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: (unknown-jobid) no signing subdomain match for `gmail.com' Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: (unknown-jobid) no signing keylist match for `[email protected]' Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: (unknown-jobid) not internal Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: (unknown-jobid) not authenticated Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: (unknown-jobid) mode select: verifying Jun 7 02:10:09 ip-10-194-99-63 dkim-filter[27964]: BA6E210015D: bad signature data Jun 7 02:10:10 ip-10-194-99-63 postfix/cleanup[30131]: BA6E210015D: milter-reject: END-OF-MESSAGE from mail-pv0-f176.google.com[74.125.83.176]: 5.7.0 bad DKIM signature data; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<mail-pv0-f176.google.com> can anybody give me any clue why I am getting the above error in my postfix logs and what remedies I can put in to rectify or workaround this or warn the sender. • Interface Builder caching bad data (voodoo)

    - by Ryan Townshend
Sometimes IB will hold onto old or bad references, and I cannot seem to remove or edit them. EDIT I have made this a wiki question with the intention of gathering more data on the phenomenon. Answers involving situations where other coders have encountered this are welcome. This happened to me again last night with a table controller. When I created a spike project to try and reproduce the error, the system worked the way I anticipated. Then back in the actual project the bad behavior continued, even if I remove the xib file and all controllers involved. Creating a whole new project with none of the original (problematic) xib and nib files worked correctly. This question is not about the specifics of this incident but about this type of incident in IB. Does anyone know more about this type of bad IB behaviour, and possibly a more stylish way to to eliminate it than nuking the project? Note, removing the offending IB files and recreating them in the same project has not solved this for me in the past, only whole new projects. Answers regarding examples of when/how this glitch has been observed/created are welcome as well.

    I am randomly receiving 502 Bad Gateway error pages - I can reproduce this issue by modifying hosting plans in plesk 11 and in the same time refreshing a page for a minute or two. When I get the 502 error page all I have to do is refresh the browser and the page refreshes properly. i am using centos 6 this it from todays log (/var/log/nginx/error.log): 2012/12/04 10:52:07 [error] 21272#0: *545 recv() failed (104: Connection reset by peer) while reading response header from upstream, client: 82.77.68.111, server: likeit-craiova.ro, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://195.254.135.113:7080/", host: "likeit-craiova.ro" this is the nginx config (/etc/nginx/nginx.conf) #user nginx; worker_processes 1; #error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log; #error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log notice; #error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log info; #pid /var/run/nginx.pid; events { worker_connections 1024; } http { include mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; proxy_buffer_size 128k; proxy_buffers 4 256k; proxy_busy_buffers_size 256k; #log_format main '$remote_addr - $remote_user [$time_local] "$request" ' # '$status $body_bytes_sent "$http_referer" ' # '"$http_user_agent" "$http_x_forwarded_for"'; #access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log main; sendfile on; #tcp_nopush on; #keepalive_timeout 0; keepalive_timeout 65; #tcp_nodelay on; #gzip on; #gzip_disable "MSIE [1-6]\.(?!.*SV1)"; server_tokens off; include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; } fastcgi config file (/etc/nginx/fastcgi.conf): fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_NAME $fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param REQUEST_URI $request_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_URI $document_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $document_root; fastcgi_param SERVER_PROTOCOL $server_protocol; fastcgi_param HTTPS $https if_not_empty; fastcgi_param GATEWAY_INTERFACE CGI/1.1; fastcgi_param SERVER_SOFTWARE nginx/$nginx_version; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; fastcgi_param REMOTE_PORT $remote_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_ADDR $server_addr; fastcgi_param SERVER_PORT $server_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $server_name; # PHP only, required if PHP was built with --enable-force-cgi-redirect fastcgi_param REDIRECT_STATUS 200; fastcgi parameters config (/etc/nginx/fastcgi_params): fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_NAME $fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param REQUEST_URI $request_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_URI $document_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $document_root; fastcgi_param SERVER_PROTOCOL $server_protocol; fastcgi_param HTTPS $https if_not_empty; fastcgi_param GATEWAY_INTERFACE CGI/1.1; fastcgi_param SERVER_SOFTWARE nginx/$nginx_version; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; fastcgi_param REMOTE_PORT $remote_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_ADDR $server_addr; fastcgi_param SERVER_PORT $server_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $server_name; # PHP only, required if PHP was built with --enable-force-cgi-redirect fastcgi_param REDIRECT_STATUS 200; alsow i'm getting this on a shared hosting server, on one of the domains: Unable to generate the web server configuration file on the host because of the following errors: nginx: [warn] duplicate MIME type "text/html" in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf:45 nginx: [emerg] open() "/var/www/vhosts/partydayandnight.ro/statistics/logs/proxy_access_log" failed (24: Too many open files) nginx: configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test failed Please resolve the errors in web server configuration templates and generate the file again. why is this appearing and what troubles may it cause? what can i do to get this errors fixed? thank you!

  • Onshore work methods V Offshore Supplier work methods - how to strike a balance?

    - by LadyCoconut
Any advice on the best way to strike a balance between the work methods of an offshore supplier and the work methods of a new onshore team? We have an offshore supplier with about 2 years who have their own working practices and methods. I was bought in as the first onshore developer for my company with the view to vetting the code that comes in and putting together some best practices. Now from what I've seen there are lots of holes in their process (e.g. estimation, planning, code reviews, coding standards from about 10 years ago, no concept of mocking, refactoring etc). I need to be seen as a problem solver and not a problem creator but also I need to try and be somewhat forceful of what they are doing needs improving and at the end of the day they are a supplier. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

  • C# myths about best practices?

  • What are the differences between enterprise software/architecture patterns and open source software?

    - by Jeffrey
I am mainly a business app developer and I hear terms like CQRS, ServiceBus, SOA, DDD, BDD, AOP a lot. My question is that do these patterns/practices exist only in the "enterprise" world? In contract to the enterprise world is the open source community. Highly trafficked sites like Digg, LiveJournal whenever there is an article mentioning about how they built/scaled their sites all I am hearing is what open source software (Memcached, NoSQL) they used in order to scale/simplify the way they tackle software problems and they rarely mention those above terms. Is it because they are not as sophisticated as those of enterprise level software (I doubt it)? Or are people just making up those terms/practices/patterns in order to keep them jobs? Or am I confusing myself with differences between software development and internet website scaling?

  • Network update solutions for a company of ~20 (5 local, 15 remote)?

    - by Margaret
Hi all This is probably going to be a bit up in the air, because we're still in the "reaching towards solutions" phase, but I figured I'd see what you guys had to say. Plus I honestly know very little about systems and what is good and bad pratice. My organisation has always more or less worked on the concept of local machines; since it primarily employed contractors who were working from home, each of those people was largely responsible for their own machine and backup procedures and the like. We're now expanding, though we're still reasonably small (we're up to about 20 staff members). Most people still work remotely, but we have a central office where about five people are working. But we're getting large enough that we're starting to think it would be a good idea to have a central file server, and things like that - if someone gets hit by a bus, we want someone else to know where to look for the files to continue their work. A lot of the people who work for us remotely work on projects for other companies as well, so I don't want to force them to log in to our server whenever they're on a network. But I do want to make connection to be as painless as possible to do so, to improve utilisation. The other thing is that we're getting more people who would like to remote into the office server and do their work there. Our current remote connection application is an SSH install that allows people access to the network; the problem is, it's a black box to me, and I've never understood how to even connect to it (despite supposedly being de facto sysadmin). Thus far I've been able to bounce questions about how to get it working to the guy who does know it well, but he's leaving the company soon. So we probably need a solution for this that I actually understand. We were knocking around the idea of implementing a VPN with some form of remote desktop, and someone mentioned that this was largely a matter of purchasing a router capable of it; I'm not sure of the truth of that statement. This is what we have in the office: Two shiny new i7 servers, each running Windows Server 2008. Precise eventual layout is still being debated, a little, but the current suggestion is that one is primary database crunching, while the other is a warm backup of the databases, along with running Reporting Services. They currently have SQL Server 2008 installed on them, which is being connected to via the 'sa' account. We're hoping to make each person use their own account (preferably one tied to the 'central' password we set up, so we can use Windows Authentication). An older server, running XP Pro, that we are currently using as a test bed for a project that requires access to older versions of software. This machine is also being used to take backups, but I'm thinking of moving that functionality elsewhere. A spare desktop from a guy who left the company (XP Pro). We're thinking of bumping up the hard disk space and using it as the magical file server that's going to solve one particular everything. Assorted desktops, laptops, etc, at least one for each person in the office (mix of Win XP and Win 7; occasionally a person who normally works remotely might drop in to the office and bring a laptop bearing Vista, but it's pretty rare). All are set up as local user accounts at the moment; I don't know if it's the best arrangement. Purchasing more hardware is not a big problem, but we figure we might as well make use of what we've got first. Is Active Directory a big magic wand that's going to solve all the world's problems? Is there some other arrangement we should be looking to instead?

  • What to log when an exception occurs?

    - by Rune
public void EatDinner(string appetizer, string mainCourse, string dessert) { try { // Code } catch (Exception ex) { Logger.Log("Error in EatDinner", ex); return; } } When an exception occurs in a specific method, what should I be logging? I see a lot of the above in the code I work with. In these cases, I always have to talk to the person who experienced the error to find out what they were doing, step through the code, and try to reproduce the error. Is there any best practices or ways I can minimize all this extra work? Should I log the parameters in each method like this? Logger.Log("Params: " + appetizer + "," + mainCourse + "," + dessert, ex); Is there a better way to log the current environment? If I do it this way, will I need to write out all this stuff for each method I have in my application? Are there any best practices concerning scenarios like this?
