  • IEEE 1394 Firewire Card is not visible in Device Manager in WIndows 7

    I have a IEEE 1394 card that I have placed in one of the PCI slots of my Windows 7 PC. I have moved to Windows just last week and Windows is not detecting this card. It is not listed in the Devide Manager. Earlier when I used Fedora 12, I was able to use this interface for capturing videos from my DV Camera. The manufacturer is Tech-Com, which has not provided a driver CD for this. What can I possibly try?

  • Setting up a WPA-PSK network card to connect to a WPA2 network

    I'm currently doing a spare-parts build to put a media computer in the living room, and having a devil of a time getting my Rosewill RNX-6300 wireless card to connect to my network. I'm trying to set it up using Windows as opposed to the proprietary Rosewill software -- the Rosewill software is a little over my head. It can find the network fine, but when I try to connect, I don't get the password prompt -- it moves straight to "validating identity," scans, and then says "Windows was not able to find a certificate to log you on to the wireless network Foo." The maddening thing is that the card was working fine a week ago, in the same box, using the same OS. I pulled everything out, swapped out the motherboard, and reinstalled Windows on a freshly wiped hard drive, and now I can't get it up and running again. Suggestions? I've taken several runs at it, including attempting to manually change the settings for the network to include WPA-PSK and AES and the password, and I'm a bit worried that I've totally boned everything. My router settings: ipconfig/all results from the XP box: Again, this card was working on this network a week ago. I can't figure out why I can't get it up and running now. There's no WPA2 on the card, just WPA and WPA-PSK: WPA-PSK was the only setting that would let me enter a network key. I had TKIP and AES as options there, but cipher type is AES on the router, so I chose that. (I tried TKIP later, when this didn't work, with the same results as described below.) So I set it to WPA-PSK / AES and entered my security key. It's mixed letters and numbers, 32 characters long. No joy. Still "waiting for reply" in the main screen, and "cannot find certificate" on the pop-up. And if I try again and return to the settings again, it is reset to Open/AES. It also re-enables 802.1x in the Authentication tab if I've deselected it with WPA-PSK. It also reshortens the password. I have no idea how I blundered into getting this working in the past. I am, as you can tell, far from proficient at this. It was working before, though. What am I getting wrong?

  • Re. copying movie from USB card reader back to my camera

    I have a Canon Digital Ixus 860IS. I originally copied a short movie from my camera onto the computer via a USB card reader and then copied it back onto the camera via the same USB card reader along with some photos. The photos have copied back fine but the movie, although it's showing to have copied, can't be seen. Any reason for this? Thanks

    If I configure a Mac Pro with a RAID card and two 15k RPM drives, and leave the drives JBOD (no RAID configured), can I install Windows on the second drive? I guess the question really is, does Windows recognize the RAID card? I know it's probably just a rebadged LSI or Adaptec but wanted to see if anyone's actually done it...

  • Hyper-V Blue Screens with Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS Graphics Card

    I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64. After installing the Hyper-V role and restarting the machine, I get a blue screen error and an immediate reboot. I have Googled the issue and tracked it down to the graphics card, so I uninstalled it, and then Windows loads fine. However, after installing the graphics driver again, the Blue Screen returns. The graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS. Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?

  • PCIe network card deactivate DVI output (but NOT VGA output) on Shuttle SG41J1+

    It's all in the title :) Inserting a network card (or any other PCIe card, RAID controller, SAS, etc ) in the PCIe 16x slot of the Shuttle SG41J1 deactivate the DVI output. The VGA output still works fine. Shuttle support says that it's a chipset limitation (G41 + ICH7), but that doesn't make sense to me : the VGA and DVI share the same hardware but the D/A converter stage. Does anyone think that there may be some solution to this conundrum? Can a future BIOS update solve the problem?

  • Cant see my wireless internal card on BackTrack 5

    I have BackTrack 5 R3 installed on VMware and its on bridged connection so it gets its own ip on my network and it works I get internet connection but there is no ethernet cable connected yet somehow when I do iwconfig I cant see wlan0 and no other wireless card but etho is connected to the network somehow.... cant it be that eth0 is my wireless card which somehow misconfigured? Its an intel centrino advanced n 6205

    I have to update some Mac work stations in a business environment from Snow Leopard (10.6) to Lion (10.7). I found that the way is to purchase it from App Store (for 24 EUR). Now the problem is that all my users of the workstations used their own Apple ID to sign in in App Store and thus they have their private credit card information bounded to the account and I can not require them to pay the price of the update. How can I pay for the update with a company credit card?

  • Upgrading from Vista Home Basic to Vista Business

    I have a PC that came with Vista Home Basic, and I now have some need for Remote Desktop, which is not included in Home Basic, so I'd like to upgrade. Now, there is apparently some hack to get Remote Desktop working in Home Premium, and obviously, it's in Ultimate, but really, the Business Edition would be the best fit for us. Unfortunately, Windows Anytime Upgrade does not provide a path from Home Basic to Business. My question is, if I were to buy a standalone Vista Business license, could I use it to do an upgrade from my current Home Basic installation? Would it be simply entering the new license key?

  • The importance of Unit Testing in BI

    One of the main steps in the process we internally use to develop a BI solution is the implementation of Unit Test of you BI Data. As you may already know, I’ve create a simple (for now) tool that leverages NUnit to allow us to quickly create Unit Testing without having to resort to use Visual Studio Database Professional: http://queryunit.codeplex.com/ Once you have a tool like this one, you can start also to make sure that your BI solution (DWH and CUBE) is not only structurally sound (I mean, the cube or the report gets processed correctly), but you can also check that the logical integrity of your business rules is enforced. For example let’s say that the customer tell you that they will never create an invoice for a specific product-line in 2010 since that product-line is dismissed and will never be sold again. Ok we know that this in theory is true, but a lot of this business rule effectiveness depends on the fact the people does not do a mistake while inserting new orders/invoices and the ERP used implements a check for this business logic. Unfortunately these last two hypotesis are not always true, so you may find yourself really having some invoices for a product line that doesn’t exists anymore. Maybe this kind of situation in future will be solved using Master Data Management but, meanwhile, how you can give and idea of the data quality to your customers? How can you check that logical integrity of the analytical data you produce is exactly what you expect? Well, Unit Testing of a DWH or a CUBE can be a solution. Once you have defined your test suite, by writing SQL and MDX queries that checks that your data is what you expect to be, if you use NUnit (and QueryUnit does), you can then use a tool like NUnit2Report to create a nice HTML report that can be shipped via email to give information of data quality: In addition to that, since NUnit produces an XML file as a result, you can also import it into a SQL Server Database and then monitor the quality of data over time. It uses reflection to match properties with the same name and compatible types.   • Willy Rotstein on Analytics and Social Media in Retail

    Recently I came across a presentation from Dan Zarrella on "The Science of Retweets. (http://www.slideshare.net/HubSpot/the-science-of-retweets-with-dan-zarrella). It is an insightful, fact-based analysis of how tweets propagate and what makes them successful. The analysis is of course very interesting for those of us interested Tweeting. However, what really caught my attention is how well it illustrates, form a very different angle, some of the issues I am discussing with retailers these days. In particular the opportunities that e-commerce and social media open to those retailers with the appetite and vision to tackle the associated analytical challenges. And these challenges are of course not straightforward.   In his presentation Dan introduces the concept of Observability, I haven't had the opportunity to discuss with Dan his specific definition for the term. However, in practical retail terms, I would say that it means that through social media (and other web channels such as search) we can analyze and track processes by measuring Indicators that were not measurable before. The focus is in identifying patterns across a large number of consumers rather than what a particular individual "Likes".   The potential impact for retailers is huge. It opens the opportunity to monitor changes in consumer preference  and plan the business accordingly. And you can do this almost "real time" rather than through infrequent surveys that provide a "rear view" picture of your consumer behaviour. For instance, you could envision identifying when a particular set of fashion styles are breaking out from the pack, and commit a re-buy. Or you could monitor when the preference for a specific mobile device has declined and hence markdowns should be considered; or how demand for a specific ready-made food typically flows across regions and manage the inventory accordingly. Search, blogging, website and store data may need to be considered in identifying these trends. The data volumes involved are huge (check Andrea Morgan's recent post on "Big Data" in retail) but so are the benefits. As Andrea says, for the first time we can start getting insight into "Why" the business is performing in a certain way rather than just reporting on what is happening. And it is not just about the data volumes. Tackling the challenge also calls for integrated planning systems that can bring data and insight into the context of the Decision Making process Buyers, Merchandisers and Supply Chain managers are following.   • Wireless card power management

    I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this?
