  • Windows Phone 7 event

    This might not be of interest to anyone living outside of the Netherlands, but I still wanted to share this. On march 10th the dutch .net usergroup dotNed (of which I am chairman) organizes a LAN party together with the company Sevensteps. Sevensteps is a big player in the Surface area: they are one of the few companies whose applications are part of the standard tools you get when you buy a Surface unit. They were also present at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this year to introduce the SUR40, as mentioned in my previous post. But they do not only develop software for the Surface, they also do a lot of interesting things on other platforms. One of these is Windows Phone 7, or WP7 in short. Sevensteps and dotNed have joined forces to organize a free full day event where we will develop a WP7 application. The people attending will be developers (experienced and not so experienced on WP7), designers and all other sorts of people you’d expect in a project team. The day will start around 9.00 am and will end when the app is finished. We will form teams of both experienced and not experienced developers so that we can learn from each other. Each team will have their own task to perform, and in the end all parts will be assembled to form a killer WP7 app. As with everything that dotNed does this event is free for everyone. Microsoft will pay for dinner, Sevensteps will provide the room, lunch and ideas (and their expertise of course) and the rest is up to us!   • making cookies persistent in IE8

    There's a website I sign into frequently, and I'm getting sick of entering my username and password every time. The website can remember who I am so long as I don't close my browser (Internet Explorer 8), but when I do it forgets me, and asks me to login again. I'm guessing this is because it's using a cookie (and perhaps a session) that expires when I close my browser. Is there anyway to make this information persistent across each time I load my browser? (I tried exporting the cookies to a file, and then importing them as soon as the browser was reloaded, but that didn't work either... I'm thinking the cookie text file needs to be modified somehow.) (FYI The website is http://blackboard.unh.edu, but you won't have access unless you happen to be a student there :-) NOTE: I'm not interested in using any password remembering features in the browser. The only solution I'm open to is making the cookie / session persistent somehow!

  • Access functions from user control without events?

    I have an application made with usercontrols and a function on main form that removes the previous user controls and shows the desired usercontrol centered and tweaked: public void DisplayControl(UserControl uControl) I find it much easier to make this function static or access this function by reference from the user control, like this: MainForm mainform_functions = (MainForm)Parent; mainform_functions.DisplayControl(uc_a); You probably think it's a sin to access a function in mainform, from the usercontrol, however, raising an event seems much more complex in such case - I'll give a simple example - let's say I raise an event from usercontrol_A to show usercontrol_B on mainform, so I write this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); }; Now what if I want usercontrol_B to also have an event to show usercontrol_C? now it would look like this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); uc_b.show_uc_c += (s2,e2) => {usercontrol_C uc_c = new usercontrol_C(); DisplayControl(uc_c);} }; THIS LOOKS AWFUL! The code is much simpler and readable when you actually access the function from the usercontrol itself, therefore I came to the conclusion that in such case it's not so terrible if I break the rules and not use events for such general function, I also think that a readable usercontrol that you need to make small adjustments for another app is preferable than a 100% 'generic' one which makes my code look like a pile of mud. What is your opinion? Am I mistaken?

  • Refactoring and Open / Closed principle

    I have recently being reading a web site about clean code development (I do not put a link here because it is not in English). One of the principles advertised by this site is the Open Closed Principle: each software component should be open for extension and closed for modification. E.g., when we have implemented and tested a class, we should only modify it to fix bugs or to add new functionality (e.g. new methods that do not influence the existing ones). The existing functionality and implementation should not be changed. I normally apply this principle by defining an interface I and a corresponding implementation class A. When class A has become stable (implemented and tested), I normally do not modify it too much (possibly, not at all), i.e. If new requirements arrive (e.g. performance, or a totally new implementation of the interface) that require big changes to the code, I write a new implementation B, and keep using A as long as B is not mature. When B is mature, all that is needed is to change how I is instantiated. If the new requirements suggest a change to the interface as well, I define a new interface I' and a new implementation A'. So I, A are frozen and remain the implementation for the production system as long as I' and A' are not stable enough to replace them. So, in view of these observation, I was a bit surprised that the web page then suggested the use of complex refactorings, "... because it is not possible to write code directly in its final form." Isn't there a contradiction / conflict between enforcing the Open / Closed Principle and suggesting the use of complex refactorings as a best practice? Or the idea here is that one can use complex refactorings during the development of a class A, but when that class has been tested successfully it should be frozen?

  • Symbol of VPNanytime is not shown anymore after upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10

    Usually when I start VPN anytime (by calling a certain url in firefox) in Ubuntu 11.10 I saw a little "green symbol with a yellow lock in front of it" for the VPN anytime client near the clock. If I wanted to quit the VPN connection I just clicked on this symbol and hit logout/quit. Today I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and the VPN connection works here fine too. But the symbol near the clock is not shown anymore. Is this a bug or do I have to set this up manually? And is there a way to quit the client perhaps by terminal? Currently I just do a restart, when I want the vpn connection terminated and that's kind uncomfortable. :-) Thanks for any suggestions!

    Lately I have been using Chrome, but I am starting to think I should use FF. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various mainstream browsers (with an emphasis on Chrome and FF) when doing web development? Is it easier to start with clean code for a relatively conforming browser, and later add hacks/workarounds for acceptable display with less conforming browsers, or is it easier to work with a variety of browsers from the beginning, so we never have a page that's completely unacceptable with, for example, IE 6?

  • boxes adding up to 100% of the browser [closed]

    I want to have 2 boxes right next to each other, one with a fixed width, and another with a width that will change based on the size of the browser. The box has overflow:auto, and I'm trying to get the first box to act as a side bar that will follow you down the page. But of course I can't seem to achieve this, and have come here hoping someone could give me some examples, or point me in the right direction. Thanks!

  • Clicking links in pdfs opened with Okular opens Abiword (instead of the default browser)

    I work with Xubuntu 12.04 and use Okular (version 0.14.3) to view pdf files. If I click a link in a pdf file (created with pdflatex using the hyperref package), Abiword is opened instead of my default browser google-chrome. How can I change this behavior? The settings in Okular do not seem to provide a solution. (Note that I set google-chrome as the preferred application for web browsing under Settings - Preferred Applications, so that's not the problem).

  • Is there a way to emulate pinch-zoom?

    I'm looking for a way to emulate pinch zoom in either an android emulator(android SDK-less desirable) or a (preferred) native Ubuntu web browser that I can resize to a specified size for initial testing of HTML5 applications. This is would be useful for first round testing during cross-platform application development. Note: I'm trying to do this with no real touch-device only a mouse. So the best answer would be something like "Install this chromium plug-in and use this hotkey to set pinch points" or something similar. We already have this for getting dual mouse working(thanks AmithKK). The browser that supports multi-touch is the hard part. Something to note is that I start getting screen artifacts using multiple mice via that guide. They're mild and tolerable, but they are there.

Is IE9 a modern browser? well Are you thing that they make something bettter then thing another that what Firefox and chrome do whenever Microsoft do this. that's point that Microsoft always blast IE because they make version upon version not upon update like Firefox make 3.6.14 after 3.6.13 and chrome give update soon as possible but IE not come soon. they will thing for making 10 instead of giving update on 9. well what they tell us new. they make fool public everytime i believe they make fool public as same as today they maked for version 9 they show developer tool in 9 have three new tabs or pael are this enough. whenever  in chrome and firefox their is many plugin who make development easier IE still have a developer tool who not have enough power like Firebug in Firefox. they show performance but forget luna user [window xp] and their IE never runs on other plateform but chrome and firefox can. no customization in IE whenever chrome and firefox have uncountable plugin and addons. show features now in IE who already implemented in firefox very early. well their is no rule that static goes right every time not sure that IE and Firefox both are right in their language. their is no one predict what thing goes better in future. so well keep a thing in mind never wasted time and also thing to make task easier even you need to use sollution opensource or closesoure inside or outside MS does not matter. well everyone tell you much more then they do even IE and some other. they never tell you this thing not in IE but in another can be found they never tell you use other whenever you need a thing and never can be found in their software. you need to more beware of IE because they make them commorcial not really for public if really then why they stop wxp user to use them as well firefox and chrome never force. because they need a thing that force more then more copy of windows sale. so they thing to add a thing in window 8. the IE9 they thing to make before that they thing to make  this for windows 8. they always force user to purchase this for this. this for this. and this trick sell their software. well outside MS Mozilla and Chrome all behave better with user and their feedback. they respect user their privacy and feedback. if you not believe that how much problem you found in IE and they got solved soon as in chrome and firefox bug kill soon. because IE not opensource we need to  boycutt them secondly their is no customization then they make user task easier even with twitter and facebook.

  • Browser automatically refreshes and Home folder window opens

    I am facing a very strange problem. Out of the blue, my browser starts refreshing itself infinitely. My first guess was firefox is messing up. I installed chrome. But, it happens in chrome as well. Other than that, sometimes my home folder automatically opens and keep opening itself infinitely. My next guess was Mouse is faulty. Replace the mouse - but same things. This happens even if I remove my keyboard. What can be the reason? This started happening after I installed Ubuntu 10.10 few days back. Earlier on windows, everything was working fine. So, I am a bit skeptical to assume that this is a hardware fault. How to fix this problem?   • Google Chromecast cast tab from Chrome browser sucks

  • Unity session goes to lock on app launch, and won't unlock with password

    Has been happening on every Ubuntu machine I've used to date, which is a total of 4. Started in 12.10 as far as I know, but it might have happened with 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10 and now 14.04. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, but what always seems to trigger it is opening a web browser or some other application first from the sidebar. Firefox was was the most recent trigger. Instead of opening my browser, which it acts like it's going to do... the session locks, goes to the login screen, and won't unlock with the correct password. By 'won't unlock' I mean it unlocks then immediately locks again without first restoring unity, it does not produce 'incorrect password' I suspect this is a virus or password snooping software because of the fact it won't unlock with correct password information and I think if this IS a security issue, it should be fixed asap considering it's widespread throughout multiple versions. It's probably not a virus, but it is certainly suspicious behaviour to see your pc do that... wouldn't you think?

  • How to choose between using a Domain Event, or letting the application layer orchestrate everything

    I'm setting my first steps into domain driven design, bought the blue book and all, and I find myself seeing three ways to implement a certain solution. For the record: I'm not using CQRS or Event Sourcing. Let's say a user request comes into the application service layer. The business logic for that request is (for whatever reason) separated into a method on an entity, and a method on a domain service. How should I go about calling those methods? The options I have gathered so far are: Let the application service call both methods Use method injection/double dispatch to inject the domain service into the entity, letting the entity do it's thing and then let it call the method of the domain service (or the other way around, letting the domain service call the method on the entity) Raise a domain event in the entity method, a handler of which calls the domain service. (The kind of domain events I'm talking about are: http://www.udidahan.com/2009/06/14/domain-events-salvation/) I think these are all viable, but I'm unable to choose between them. I've been thinking about this a long time and I've come to a point where I no longer see the semantic differences between the three. Do you know of some guidelines when to use what?

    Beyond the obvious something that seams real, realism in games is a hard feature to hit. In some cases, things that are completely impossible in real life are seen as realistic by gamers. For instance, in some FPS you can survive being hit by a fair amount of bullets when in real life one is enough, Newton-defying car drifts, etc. So, in some cases, reductions of life-like actions or consequences implies a bigger sense of realism. The root of this pseudo-philosophical question lies in: I am going to create a engine for battles in an online (browser-based) strategic game. Browser-based means that the battle would not be seen. And i do not know how to approach this realism issue.

    Microsoft, by seemingly ignoring the huge benefits of JIT compiling VMs on the browser and instead pushing Silverlight (which is pretty awesome though), is showing it STILL hasn't gotten the Web. (The fact that I can't seem to post on these newsgroups using Firefox (!!!) is yet another glaring example) What is so ironic is that it has a golden chance to leapfrog Chrome without even reinventing any...

  • Duplicate DNS Zones (Error 4515 in Event Log )

    I am getting these two error in the DNS Event log (errors at end of question). I have confirmed I do have duplicate zones. I am wondering which ones to delete. The DomainDNSZone contains all of our DNS records but it does not have the _msdcs zone.... that is in the ForestDNSZone with the duplicates that are not in use. here is a picture of that 3 Questions. I understand the advantages of having DNS in the ForestDNSZone. so... Why is DNS using the DomainDNSZone and is that acceptable considering _msdcs... is in the ForestDNSZone? If so, should I just delete the DC=1.168.192.in-addr.arpa and DC=supernova.local from the ForestDNSZone? Or should I try to get those to be the ones in use? What are those steps? I understand how to delete. That is simple but if i must move zones some info would be appreaciated there. Just to confirm. from my understanding. I can delete the two duplicates in the ForestDNSZone and leave the _msdcs.supernova.local as thats required there. This will resolve the erros I see. Just fyi when I look in those folders from the ForestDNSZone they have just 2 and 1 entries respectively. So obviously not in use compared to the others. I am pretty sure I understand the steps to complete this. But if you would like to provide that info, bonus points! Event Type: Warning Event Source: DNS Event Category: None Event ID: 4515 Date: 1/4/2011 Time: 2:14:18 PM User: N/A Computer: STANLEY Description: The zone 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa was previously loaded from the directory partition DomainDnsZones.supernova.local but another copy of the zone has been found in directory partition ForestDnsZones.supernova.local. You'll probably find that you create read-only dependency properties much less often than read-write properties, but this should still save you some typing when you do need to do so.     Hi, I am trying to add an "KeyPress" event in a textbox (WinForm) this.textBox1.KeyPress += new System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventHandler(CheckKeys); and here's inside the 'CheckKeys': private void CheckKeys(object sender, System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs e) { if (e.KeyChar == (char)13) { // Enter is pressed - do something } } The idea here is that once a textbox is in focus and the 'Enter' button was pressed, something will happen... However, my machine cannot find the 'KeyPress' event. Is there something wrong with my codes? I need a little help on this one. Thanks.
