  • Uuntu 9.10 will not boot

    After an update yesterday my Dell X300 will only boot to a screen with an option to perform 2 memory tests. If I perform these tests, it will only go back to this same screen, offering a choice of memory test again, 86+ or 86+ serial console 115200. This screen is headed - GNU Grub version 1.97 beta 4. This is a full install on my hard drive. How can I get back to booting normally?

  • Windows update on netbook requires CD (hint, there's no CD drive)

    An "Important" update for Microsoft Works (via Windows Update) on a Dell netbook gets about halfway through and then pops up with the super-awesome "Please insert Microsoft Works 9.0 disc" message. Of course, the netbook has no CD rom drive, there is no handy folder (that i can find) containing "Works9.msi", and I have no Works9 disc. It wouldn't be so bad, except the update keeps coming up everytime WU runs. Any suggestions?

    I was just going through some all-in-one desktop PCs (Dell Studio One, HP Touch Smart, Lenovo IdeaCenter, etc.) and their specs really look good (4 GB RAM, 2.x GHz Core 2 Duo, etc.) Are there any disadvantages of such PCs as a developer machine? I mostly do Java (Eclipse + MySQL + Tomcat / JBoss) or .NET (Visual Studio + MsSQL) development. Edit: One common question I could see is harddrive size and that's around 320 GB 7200 RPM.

  • Why is the screen resolution different between Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions?

    I installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit edition on my Dell Precision M6400 with an nVidia Quadro Fx 2700M card and I see that even though the screen resolution is set to 1920 X 1200, its not the same as the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a second hard drive. Both OSes show that the screen resolution is set at 1920 X 1200 but Ultimate shows more pixels than Enterprise. I also reinstalled the display driver but in vain. Any ideas? TIA

    Hi all, Often (not always) when I open some folder (most of the times "Downloads" folder) Explorer freeze. The only thing I'm able to do is open the task manager ad kill the application that suddenly restart. I tried to: delete all files in folder (via cmd prompt) delete the folder an create a new folder with the same name This issue is driving me crazy, please help.     I have 2TB of WD external hard drive. I use windows Vista 32x. on DELL laptop Latitude D630 and connect through USB cable. When I transfer from my C drive to external hard drive it transfer only 3KB/sec. It take 30min to transfer 6MB. It is useless at the moment. Can anyone help me how to speed up please.     Don't remember this from earlier, but my mouse is lagging when I refresh specific websites in Chrome and Firefox. I can't observe such lags with Internet Explorer. This server is linked to outside world using a leased line connection of 1mbps capacity. My problem is that the users complain that the downloads from the server are very slow, how can I imporve this? What things should I be looking at.   • Bad disk performance on HP DL360 with Smarty Array P400i RAID controller

    I have a HP DL360 server with 4x 146GB SAS disks and a Smart Array P400i RAID controller with 256MB cache. The disks are in RAID 5 (3 disks + 1 hot spare). The server is running VMware ESX 3i. The disk write performance is really bad.   • restoring a failed SBS 2000 box...

    Hi there, I read a post where you had mentioned you have had a PERC card blow up on you in an SBS box... I've got a similar situation where one of my RAID drives failed and then the power supply failed before I could replace the drive... I then replaced the power supply and the failed drive and reconfigured the RAID array. I had a recent full backup of the my Win2k SBS's C: drive stored on my SYmantec backup exec server so I installed win2K server on the c: partition and then once I had that up and running, installed the backup exec agent so as to do a restore of the entire c drive including system state. THis all worked just fine, until I had to reboot. I received an "incorrect drive configuration" error and then it hangs. I figure that likely makes sense becasue I think my RAID array is configured slightly different now in that the partitions may be sizeded ever so slightly differently now than they were before I think... Is there a way I can just restore from my backup BUT maybe exclude some of the registry and hidden boot files it wants to restore so that it is booting with the current configuration now active on that machine - not the pre blow up configuration files? I also read a post that indicated you might have to install the exact same service pack etc... etc.. before attemting a restore but that does not make sense to me being as the entire c drive contents are going to be overwritten by the restore anyway? THe basic OS install is just to be able to get the backup exec agent installed . I can;t understand why one would need to install the exact same SP level. CAn you shed some light on what I might be able to do to get this thing up and running? Thanks,Brad

    I put together an ESX box for better management, but its performance is a WTF item; I'm a noob at dealing with ESX, so I'm looking for a laundry-list of reading material to help me straighten this out so I can go back to .NET programming. Current storage system: We're running Raid5+Hotspare (8x500 GB spindles) on a PERC6i on a Dell 2910. Due to ESX limitatios, the PERC is showing the storage as 1x2TB + 1x800GB "partitions." I'm not sure of the setup's configuration (stride / stripe / ???) at all. Our Applications We have a SBS server as well as a minor (2x50 GB, but growing at 10GB/month) database server... Our application that lives on the database VM is CPU and I/O insense; it's a database churning excercise mixed in with a lot of computation on the data (fixing that performance is what I'm supposed to be working on)... Perfomance Issue When I do a backup, restore, or worse (copy a backup from 1 vm to another to move it to the QA VM), the entire system slows to a crawl (even "unrelated" VMs). I originally thought a DASD situation would be quite good since you had PCI-x bandwidth, but the systemwide slowdown is killing productivity. Questions What should I do to make an intelligent decision about NAS vs RAID vs SAN vs DASD? Are there sweet spots/ugly spots in the storage setup? Can you use a SSD PCI-X card in ESX for the tempdb? Good/Bad idea? Is there any way to "share" some image in a copy-on-write fashion? Most of the "Backup-Copy-Restore" is to "put a clean image on the dev boxes"; if I could have them "share" the master image, the "big copy" (2x50 GB) would only need to be done once per week instead of once per dev per week...[runtime performance isn't a concern with the dev boxes, but the backup/copy/restore kills production, SBS, and everything else on the box]

  • Linux - real-world hardware RAID controller tuning (scsi and cciss)

    Most of the Linux systems I manage feature hardware RAID controllers (mostly HP Smart Array). They're all running RHEL or CentOS. I'm looking for real-world tunables to help optimize performance for setups that incorporate hardware RAID controllers with SAS disks (Smart Array, Perc, LSI, etc.) and battery-backed or flash-backed cache. Assume RAID 1+0 and multiple spindles (4+ disks). I spend a considerable amount of time tuning Linux network settings for low-latency and financial trading applications. But many of those options are well-documented (changing send/receive buffers, modifying TCP window settings, etc.). What are engineers doing on the storage side? Historically, I've made changes to the I/O scheduling elevator, recently opting for the deadline and noop schedulers to improve performance within my applications. As RHEL versions have progressed, I've also noticed that the compiled-in defaults for SCSI and CCISS block devices have changed as well. This has had an impact on the recommended storage subsystem settings over time. However, it's been awhile since I've seen any clear recommendations. And I know that the OS defaults aren't optimal. For example, it seems that the default read-ahead buffer of 128kb is extremely small for a deployment on server-class hardware.   • Preventing h/w RAID cards from dropping slow JBOD disks

    I'm considering buying a used SAS h/w RAID card for externally attaching HDDs to an HP ProLiant I'm setting up. However, I only require RAID functionality on some of the drives. Theoretically it should be simple to JBOD the other drives, but some of them are inexpensive SATA disks and probably cannot have TLER disabled. I'd like to know, prior to actually ordering a RAID card, whether typically RAID cards would still enforce dropping of disks that do not respond within a few seconds, even if the disk is in a JBOD, and whether there is any way to disable this. Ideally it would be nice to be able to select certain SAS ports that will be pass-through, bypassing the RAID engine entirely and just acting as an HBA for those ports. I know I could buy a separate SAS HBA but that seems like a waste of $ and is also impractical as it's a 1U server so space is extremely limited. My question then is whether the functionality I'm looking for (pass-through on certain ports or at least JBOD drives not getting themselves dropped due to slow response) is typical of proper h/w RAID cards such as PERC 5/E etc. I've browsed through the latter's manual but unfortunately, as with most user manuals, it states the obvious and doesn't state the unobvious.   • setup lowcost image storage server with 24x SSD array to get high IOPS?

    I want to build let's name it a lowcost Ra*san which would host for our social site the images (many millions) we have 5 sizes of every photo with 3 KB, 7 KB, 15 KB, 25 KB and 80 KB per Image. My idea is to build a Server with 24x consumer 240 GB SSD's in Raid 6 which will give me some 5 TB Disk space for the photo storage. To have HA I can add a 2nd one and use drdb. I'm looking to get above 150'000 IOPS (4K Random reads). As we mostly have read access only and rarely delete photos i think to go with consumer MLC SSD. I read many endurance reviews and don't see there a problem as long we don't rewrite the cells. What you think about my idea? - I'm not sure between Raid 6 or Raid 10 (more IOPS, cost SSD). - Is ext4 OK for the filesystem - Would you use 1 or 2 Raid controller, with Extender Backplane If anyone has realized something similar i would be happy to get Real World numbers. UPDATE I have buy 12 (plus some spare) OCZ Talos 480GB SAS SSD Drive's they will be placed in a 12-bay DAS and attached to a PERC H800 (1GB NV Cache, manufactured by LSI with fastpath) Controller, I plan to setup Raid 50 with ext4. If someone is wondering about some benchmarks let me know what you would like to see.
