• Creating the concept of Time

  So I've reached the point in my exploration of gaming where I'd like to impliment the concept of time into my little demo I've been building. What are some common methodologies for creating the concept of time passing within a game? My thoughts so far: My game loop tendes to spend a fair bit of time sitting around waiting or user input so any time system will likely need to be run in a seperate thread. What I've currently done is create a BackgroundWorker passing in a method that contains a loop triggering every second. This is working fine and I can output information to the console from here etc. Inside this loop I have a DateTime object that is incrimented by 1 minute for every realtime second. (the game begins in the year 01/01/01) Is this a standard way of acheiving this result or are there more tried and tested methods? I'm also curious about how to go about performing time based actions (reducing player energy, moving entities around the game board, life/death etc). Thanks for any pointers or advice. I've searched around however I'm not familiar enough with the terms and so my searches are yeilding little result on this one.

  Hi Frank, today is your last day at Oracle. I cannot belief that retirement is an alternative to designing software and improving products for decades. I might figure it out myself in a couple of years. Our ways have crossed several times. And I am extremely thankful for that. I still remember my first session on an Apple Lisa. It must have been around 1985. I was still in school, and we were visiting the University of Hamburg to get some orientation on the departments. When I started I chose Informatics. And I suppose the Apple Lisa played a significant role in my decision. Is it fate that I later wrote about Apple Lisa? I’ve attended your presentation and public demo of the Lisa System at CHI ’98 in Los Angeles. Maybe a video still exists. I should look it up and publish it somewhere. You had also booth duty for Sun Microsystems – presenting HotJava Views, a user interface for a network computer. And you were handing out VHS tapes (!) of Starfire. I still have mine – but no player anymore. Then I joined Sun in 2002, and I guess I popped up in your office each time when I came to Santa Clara. The SEED mentoring program finally made it possible that we exchanged and discussed many ideas on the past and future of HCI. Dueling Interaction Models of Personal-Computing and Web-Computing at MEDICI 2007 is one of the results. But do you remember for instance also our jam session with Phil Clevenger on Hello World? Marvelous! I will miss you at Oracle. Enjoy your life and let’s stay in touch.Matthias

It is organized annually in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 8th edition of the conference is moving to a new and bigger venue: Sofia Event Center. In my career, I have presented over 9 different countries (India, USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand), this was the first time for me to present in Europe. DevReach was perfect places to start my journey in Europe as an evangelist. The event was one of the most organized event I have ever come across in my life. • Technical development decision for my newly established software company

  I have a new software company where I am planning to develop CRM system. So I have settled down on the technological approach I am going to use:- I will use an open source Java-based CRM engine. I will use a third party reporting tool named JasperReports for providing reports capabilities for the CRM. I will develop the interface and any customization which the customer might ask for using asp.net mvc framework since my knowledge and experience are based on asp.net. And I will use the CRM API to integrate my asp.net web application with the Java-based CRM. I have developed a simple demo which integrate these three main components (CRM engine, asp.net application and the reporting tool) and they worked well. But I am afraid of the following risk that I might face if I go with the above approach: I should hire developers with different skills and experience: Developers with Java skills to be able to modify the Java-based CRM and writing plug-ins -when needed- to extend the CRM capabilities. Other developers with asp.net skills to be able to build the application such as application forms, the portal from where users will be able to start the CRM processes, searching capabilities, etc. So might the above point raise some risks when I start hiring a new team and start building the CRM application, OR I am on the right track at this early stage?

  During this week’s Oracle OpenWorld Conference, we were given some sneak peeks into the short term future of the Oracle SOA Suite. During various roadmap sessions, on the demo grounds as well as in the keynote session by Thomas Kurian (the replay of which you can see here, new features were described and demonstrated, allowing us to get a fairly good overview of what is going to come for SOA Suite - later in 2013 and sometime in 2014 (probably the first half of that year). The SOA Suite plays an important part in the three themes Thomas Kurian set down for the Fusion Middleware suite of products: support for mobility, cloud and business user empowerment. Some of the highlighted new aspects of Oracle SOA Suite are: Adapters to connect from on-premise to in-the-cloud – specifically targeting SalesForce, RightNow and also providing an SDK to create custom integrations into the cloud (the first cloud adapters will be released on 11g, before the end of the year) Mobile enablement by exposing RESTful services that communicate using JSON as well as adding the capability to call out to such services (12c functionality) Enhanced functionality on Exalogic (of course it runs faster on Exalogic, up to 20 times) Modular runtime with a lighter footprint.   Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work!   The GridViewComboBox column is used to display lookup data in user friendly manner. For our demo we bind RadGridView for WPF to a collection of custom Location objects. As you may notice – each location has a selectable Country field.  Here is the underlying ‘data model’: public class Location {  public int CountryID { get; set; }  public string CityName { get; set; } } public class Country {  public int ID { get; set; }  public string Name { get; set; } }   The location object contains the integer CountryID. Each CountryID corresponds to a certain country and with the help of GridViewComboBoxColumn we see some human readable country names instead of the underlying numeric IDs. Those will also keep you posted of upcoming in-person and webcast events. From the Oracle Events website, simply navigate to your geography and refine your options to locate what interests you. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in the Oracle Day & Product Fair in Atlanta, Georgia.  Thanks to those who stopped by to ask your support questions and watch me demo My Oracle Support features and best practices. It was a fantastic turnout.  The Buckhead Theatre provided served as an excellent venue. It was standing room only for the double keynotes on topics of interest to our customers: Navigating Complexity by Simplifying I.T., and Oracle Exadata X3-Transforming Data Management.
