• Looking for easy way to analyze var_dump (PHP) on large objects

  I know (PHP's) var_dump is supposed to be "human readable" and all, but analyzing large objects is just a pain in the neck. I am struggling to make sense of a few of the large objects that are being passed around in a script that we are running. (I know that using xdebug with and IDE is a good idea, but I have not been able to get xdebug to run on this project for some reason - several days lost, ugh). Any ideas on how I can easily digest the contents of a really big var_dump? Any ideas are welcome... Although I am hoping that there is something similar to Thomas Frank's JSON tool (where you just put some code in and it gives a nice graphical representation).

• MySql - only update some rows if the table exists - do not want an error thrown

  I want to run an update query. The query will be run against multiple databases - not every database will have the table. I don't want the update to be attempted if the table does not exist. I don't want any error to be thrown - I just want the update to be ignored. Any ideas? EDIT: just to be clear - the query is executed in an automated deployment - no human interaction possible. EDIT2: the logic to say whether the update should run or not will need to be in the MySql query itself. This is not being run through a command prompt or batch or managed code.

• How to debug/reformat C printf calls with lots of arguments in vim?

  I have a function call in a program that I'm maintaining has 28 arguments for a printf call. It's printing a lot of data in a CSV file. I have problems following finding where what goes and I have some mismatches in the parameters types. I enabled -Wall in gcc and I get warnings like: n.c:495: warning: int format, pointer arg (arg 15) n.c:495: warning: format argument is not a pointer (arg 16) n.c:495: warning: double format, pointer arg (arg 23) The function is like this: fprintf (ConvFilePtr, "\"FORMAT3\"%s%04d%s%04d%s%s%s%d%s%c%s%d%c%s%s%s%s%s%s%s%11.lf%s%11.lf%s%11.lf%s%d\n", some_28_arguments_go_here); I would like to know if there is a vim plugin that highlights the printf format specifier when i go with the cursor over a variable. • iPhone + selecting a portion of UIImage using some rectangular frame and than cropping it

  Hello, I have requirement of selecting a portion of UIImage displayed on iPhone screen (for e.g. selecting the face from the image of some human being) using some rectangular type of frame. It means a rectangular type of frame can be moved across the image to place it at portion that we want. After placing it, I need to resize the frame in order to have that portion completely fit in the frame. Finally, the UIImage should be cropped so that I have a UIImage only displaying the portion that I selected using the frame. Please help me. Regards, Pratik

• Is there any ready-made calendar control for iPhone apps?

  I am building an applicaiton for the iPhone that will display upcoming and past events. I settled for a list view, but then I realized that a calendar (just like the one displayed in the "month" view in the built-in Calendar application) would be a best match (that is, this one). However, the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines just mentions the Date Picker, not the calendar, so I believe there is nothing like that out of the box. Is that true? If so, does anyone know of a third-party control that could be used? (I could write one myself, but I'd rather pick up something ready, since this is a departure on the original project plans).   As stated in the framework design guidelines and the WWW in general, the current guideline is to name your constants like this LastTemplateIndex as opposed to LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX With the PascalCasing approach, how do you differentiate between a Property and a Constant. ErrorCodes.ServerDown is fine. But what about private constants within your class ? I use quite a lot of them for naming magic numbers.. or for expected values in my unit tests and so on. The ALL_CAPS style helps me know that it is a constant . _testApp.SelectTemplate(LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX); *Disclosure: I have been using the SCREAMING_CAPS style for a while for constants + I find it more readable than squishedTogetherPascalCasedName. • StringBuilder/StringBuffer vs. "+" Operator

  I'm reading "Better, Faster, Lighter Java" (by Bruce Tate and Justin Gehtland) and am familiar with the readability requirements in agile type teams, such as what Robert Martin discusses in his clean coding books. On the team I'm on now, I've been told explicitly not to use the "+" operator because it creates extra (and unnecessary) string objects during runtime. But this article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01274.html Written back in '04 talks about how object allocation is about 10 machine instructions. (essentially free) It also talks about how the GC also helps to reduce costs in this environment. What is the actual performance tradeoffs between using "+," "StringBuilder," or "StringBuffer?" (In my case it is StringBuffer only as we are limited to Java 1.4.2.) StringBuffer to me results in ugly, less readable code, as a couple of examples in Tate's book demonstrates. And StringBuffer is thread-synchronized which seems to have its own costs that outweigh the "danger" in using the "+" operator. Thoughts/Opinions?

  Just out of curiosity, assuming there exists an software life form. How would you detect him/her? What are your criteria of figuring out if something/someone is intelligent or not? It seems to me that it should be quite simple to create such software once you set the right target (not just following a naive "mimic human-pass Turing Test" way). • Reading into directory, unix shell script

  I am trying to analyze the files/directories inside of a directory using a shell script, for example if the file is readable, if it is a file, if it is a directory, etc. My script is set up to take a directory as input. so I would type 'file.sh directoryname'. However, when I create a for loop to analyze the files, it analyzes the files in my current working directory rather than the specified directory name. This is my broken code: file=$1 set mypath = $file for file in $mypath * do if [ -d $file ] dirCount=`expr $dirCount + 1` fi done Why does this read the working directory instead of the specified directory? • Can I customize the indentation of ternary operators in emacs' cperl-mode?

  In emacs cperl-mode, ternary operators are not treated specially. If you break them over multiple lines, cperl-mode simply indents each line the same way it indents any continued statement, like this: $result = ($foo == $bar) ? 'result1' : ($foo == $baz) ? 'result2' : ($foo == $qux) ? 'result3' : ($foo == $quux) ? 'result4' : fail_result; This is not very readable.   I am validating constructor and method arguments, as I want to the software, especially the model part of it, to fail fast. As a result, constructor code often looks like this public MyModelClass(String arg1, String arg2, OtherModelClass otherModelInstance) { if(arg1 == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentsException("arg1 must not be null"); } // further validation of constraints... // actual constructor code... } Is there a way to do that with an annotation driven approach? Something like: public MyModelClass(@NotNull(raise=IllegalArgumentException.class, message="arg1 must not be null") String arg1, @NotNull(raise=IllegalArgumentException.class) String arg2, OtherModelClass otherModelInstance) { // actual constructor code... } In my eyes this would make the actual code a lot more readable. • Oracle (PL/SQL): Is UPDATE RETURNING concurrent?

  I'm using table with a counter to ensure unique id's on a child element. I know it is usually better to use a sequence, but I can't use it because I have a lot of counters (a customer can create a couple of buckets and each of them needs to have their own counter, they have to start with 1 (it's a requirement, my customer needs "human readable" keys). I'm creating records (let's call them items) that have a prikey (bucket_id, num = counter). I need to guarantee that the bucket_id / num combination is unique (so using a sequence as prikey won't fix my problem). The creation of rows doesn't happen in pl/sql, so I need to claim the number (btw: it's not against the requirements to have gaps). My solution was: UPDATE bucket SET counter = counter + 1 WHERE id = param_id RETURNING counter INTO num_forprikey; PL/SQL returns var_num_forprikey so the item record can be created. Question: Will I always get unique num_forprikey even if the user concurrently asks for new items in a bucket?

  I am building an MVVM Panorama Windows Phone 7 application. At some point of Panorama Item's layout I get a bottom margin of a panorama header box, that moves my content too far down. Is there a way I can set a bottom margin of a ContentPresenter, that is generated to hold the controls, defined in the Panorama.HeaderTemplate?   As you know, in Eclipse you can turn on "Unnecessary 'else' statement" check that will trigger on if-then-else with premature return. And, from my experience, there are two most possible situations when use such statement: 1) Pre-check: if (validate(arg1)) { return false; } doLotOfStuff(); 2) Post-check: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } else { return bar; } In the second case, if the trigger is on, Eclipse will suggest you to change the code to: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } return bar; However, I think that the return with else statement is more readable as it is like direct mapping of business logic. So I am curios if this "Unnecessary 'else' statement" code convention is widespread or else statement is more preferable?

• Do you think the AI industry will ever come back?

  I just spent some time reading about the collapse of the AI industry and realized a lot of the reason it failed was because technology was slow to catch up with their theories on when it would be available. I also read that it is believed computers that will be able to emulate human synapses may be made round 2015-2025. It's 2010 now and were getting pretty close to that time frame. I was wondering if anyone thinks that the AI industry will return as the technology lands? And if so, will it change the language market? Could Lisp like languages suddenly experience a burst of growth if it does? Idk I just thought it was interesting thinking about it.

• Captcha Alternative, how secure?

  I do the web page for my local library, and I was thinking it might be kind of appealing to have a "custom" captcha based on book covers. So serve up one of several dozen book covers, and have the patron filling out the form type the book title to prove they're human. Assuming I stripped the title/author info from the image and filename, would that be enough? Would the fact that it was a unique system on a fairly small website be enough to make it effective? Just how tricky are the spam bots these days? Would having the image name be the ISBN # be too obvious?

How do I stop worrying and learn to love the weak typing? Are there best practices for variable naming that help make var types human readable? Another thing I have trouble with is getting by without my trusted compiler errors and warnings. I'm getting along with firebug. Is there anything else I should have in my toolkit?

• Des decryption returns empty

  Hi, I am using Des.php for decryption. For few texts descript function returns Correct output in readable text format. For few... it just returns blank(empty.) After debugging in Des.php, i found that function _unpad($text) is returning false. The input $text is also still encoded. What could be the reason? • For-Each and Pointers in Java

  Ok, so I'm tyring to iterate through an ArrayList and remove a specefic element. However, I am having some trouble using the For-Each like structure. When I run the following code: ArrayList<String> arr = new ArrayList<String>(); //... fill with some values (doesn't really matter) for(String t : arr) { t = " some other value "; //hoping this would change the actual array } for(String t : arr) { System.out.println(t); //however, I still get the same array here } My question in, how can I make 't' a pointer to 'arr' so that I am able to change the values in a for-each loop? I know I could loop through the ArrayList using a different structure, but this one looks so clean and readable, it would just be nice to be able to make 't' a pointer. All comments are appreciated! Even if you say I should just suck it up and use a different construct.

Also, I want to set attribute one by one. I can't think of if my array change to 10*10. How long it could be. So, I hope you guys can give me some suggestions on shorten the code, and more readable. thz

• PHP given a series of arbitrary numbers, how can I choose a logical max value on a line graph?

  I am constructing a line graph in PHP. I was setting the max value of the line graph to the max value of my collection of items, but this ended up making the graph less readable you are unable to view the highest line on the graph as it intersects with the top of it. So what I need is basically a formula to take a set of numbers and calculate what the logical max value of on the line graph should be.. so some examples 3500 250 10049 45394 434 312 Max value on line graph should probably be 50000 493 412 194 783 457 344 max value on line graph would ideally be 1000 545 649 6854 5485 11545 In this case, 12000 makes sense as max value So something as simple as rounding upward to the nearest thousandth might work but I'd need it to progressively increase as the numbers got bigger. (50000 instead of 46,000 in first example) The maximum these numbers will ever be is about a million. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

• How to prevent the beep sound caused by alt key pressed in a WinForms TextBox?

  I'm creating a routine that allows the user to replicate keyboard shortcuts into a textbox for 'custom keyboard shortcuts' customization, but every time the alt key is pressed with another letter, it produces another sound. I'm capturing the keys in the textbox_keydown event to parse the modifiers + other keys into a readable Shift + A or Ctrl + Shift + B manner into that very same textbox. Should I be doing this in a different event like textbox_previewkey instead of textbox_keydown? How can I prevent the alt modifier key + a letter or number causing the Beep sound? the textbox is just a normal .net 3.5 textbox with the only edited properties of it being the ReadOnly property to false. Is there a better way I could re-do this? I'm currently just checking that if any modifiers keys are pressed and then + a-z or 0-9, then to go ahead and input the appropriately pressed keys into that same textbox like Shift + A or Ctrl + Shift + Y.

I know I can do it with nested foreach loops, but I was looking for something a little more readable. • SVN: authz directory identifiers not support

  Without using the authz, all the svn users can login and use the repos without issues. However, I would like to limit the access to some directories - not to be readable or writeable for all users. svnserve --version = 1.6.6 I tried both, granting access to users and groups. I also tried it separate, only group or only user access. [groups] admingroup=i_can_access_anything limitedgroup=i_am_limited [/] #*= @admingroup=rw i_can_access_anything=rw [projectX] #i also tried [repository:/projectX] #*= @limitedgroup=rw i_am_limited=rw Trying to access the / or /projectX at the svn fails. = access denied Without the authz, it works properly, but also grants access to other projects that do not belong to the "limited" user group :-/ Do you see what's wrong there?
