• Overheating on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron Q17R with two graphic cards and I noticed that it is overheating. I installed Bumblebee, Jupiter and Flashblock, and I followed this guide as well, but it still got up to 74C. Is there anything more I can do? It still doesn't really seem to be working well and the fan keeps spinning really fast. After performing the following test: sensors in the terminal, this is what I got: Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +75.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +75.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +68.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +68.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +65.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) it doesn't look good.

• No Drivers in Ubuntu 9.10

  I have a Lenovo G550 and I installed Ubuntu on it through Windows and I have no drivers. No sound, no wireless. I previously had installed it through Windows Vista with no problems at all. I now run Windows 7 and cannot seem to get it to function properly. I tried installing the recommended drivers to make sure the proper ones were installed and that still did nothing. Any one have ANY idea what could be happening? I just don't feel like dealing with it.

• Laptop seemingly randomly "freezes" to the point of no longer executing applications

  After upgrading to Windows 8 pro on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z5C-S04US (may be relevant, I'm not sure), my computer began to stop allowing the execution of any service or application, as well as discontinuing the update of the clock until a hard shutdown was performed. This seems to occur randomly after periods of inactivity and I've no idea the cause. These are measures I have already taken in order to attempt to stop this: -Obviously Googling potential answers to this problem -Updating all drivers -Researching all events that have occurred around the time of the failure to respond (with no results) -I tried applying "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick no" which was a hotfix for what seemed to be the same error but was not. Here is some more, potentially related, information about the error: -No BSOD (actually, I haven't at all experienced a BSOD with Windows 8) -Computer seems to have a problem shutting down/restarting most of the time (Hangs at the point where it should completely turn off) -New sound instances are not able to play, but previously loaded containers function properly -As mentioned before, the clock freezes at the time of the error -USB devices function properly -Servers that I was running fail to respond on my end, but stay online. • Broken screen on laptop?

  I recently damaged the screen on my HP Notebook...now my main concern is that I have Roboform installed and on my taskbar. The trouble is, because the screen is totaled, I can't see anything, and I discovered, to my horror, that I haven't backed any of the IDs and passwords up to a text document. Of course, I cannot access any of my content that hosts an ID name and password at all unless I can access Roboform that is installed on the notebook! Now hopefully I have ordered a SATA/USB cable to access the hard drive that I now removed form the notebook will I be able to access roboform that way and ALL the log-in details?

• XP Laptop Restarting

  I have a Dell 1525 which I reinstalled xp on recently due to a hard disk problem. Apparently I've missed something, it's taken to restarting for no apparent reason (I believe it's too frequent for windows updates which was my first thought). Last night it was particularly bad, it stopped 5 times in 2 hours while playing an online game. I can't actually think of a time it's happened when it's not running something in full screen mode. I can't see anything in the event log apart from usual start up details. How can I find and fix this issue?

• Tracking down laptops Google has never heard of

  Using MS tools to get information on PCs using our software, our customers have sent several Lenovo systems which have names we simply cannot find using Google... no search results at all. Considering these names/ids are returned by querying the system directly, not asking the customer to write it down by looking at the box, this seems odd. The ones we have so far (more than one of each) are: Lenovo 2241BL9 Lenovo 6463Y4H My guess is these are Thinkpads after Lenovo took over the brand, but can anyone help me out with this detective work? edit: the 2nd one does turn up some driver downloads and this page, but it's unclear what any of that means. • Windows 8 on HP Laptop crashes when waking up from sleep

  I always put it to sleep at night, but when I try and turn it on I hit the keyboard to activate it and a Windows screen pops up saying and error has occured. It collects data then reboots and offers to send an error report. Note this only appears to happen when I'm at home and it's hooked up to 2 monitors and 3-4 USB devices. • Option and command keys in Mac OS X are swapped and keyboard preferences do not set them back.

  On my MacBook Pro, I occasionally use external keyboards, generally Windows ones and things have been fine. Yesterday, I plugged in a new one, remapped the command/option keys so the windows/alt keys were in the same configuration, again, nothing new here. However, this time when I unplugged the USB keyboard, the laptops option/command keys remained switched. More annoying is that if I go into the System Preferences - Keyboards - Modifier keys, remapping the keys to actions does not work. I can use the drop downs to disable any specific keys, but switching the behaviours does nothing. (Cmd/Option obvious, tried remapping anything to caps lock and a few other combinations, no joy. Restore defaults set the configuration to what I'd expect, but the settings are evidently ignored.) So: Any ideas?

• My Hard Drive isn't Working

  I never use Safely Remove Hardware with Windows XP. It has been working for me for years with my SD card, mouse, hard drive and memory stick. My hard drive has a USB cable and power cord so I can hook it up to any desktop hard drive. Now my hard drives don't like this and I did not know this till now. I am always careful and to wait till it is all finish accessing the USB before I unplug it. Now three of my hard drives can't be seen by Windows, though the others still work. when I hook it up to another computer it works fine. I use the same USB cable to hook up all of my hard drives one at a time. So my USB cable is good. I think that when I unplugged the hard drive this one time, it had a file it still wanted to see and now only this drive does not work only this computer. Then the same thing happens to my other two hard drive after I used it for a week with the same cables. How can I fix this?

• Can't decide on a new distro

  I've had Ubuntu (9.10) on my netbook in the past and I really liked it. I'm currently running Fedora and feeling like I should "change it up" again. I've played around with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a little, and so far I'm very impressed. I've always wanted to try Arch, but I'm worried I won't have the driver support I need for all the non-standard hardware in a netbook. Does anybody have a suggestion for a new distro to try? I'm preferably looking for something feature-rich over light-weight, and something that I can have up and running with a minimum of configuration (at least partially working). Thanks!

• How to disable my laptop's defective keyboard?

  I have an Alienware M17x R2, and after a couple years of use I started having problems with the keyboard: Intermittently, and without warning or apparent cause (even if I'm not touching the computer), the S key (and more recently the D key) will start firing incessant signals until I hit the offending key. I've been using a USB keyboard, which is conveniently exactly the right size to fit over the built-in keyboard without touching any buttons. However, even as I type the defective keyboard will fire its stream of signals. I have contacted Dell about this, twice in fact. The first time, I was just bluntly told that they don't ship replacement keyboards. The second time I was told that they did, but they were out of stock and they would contact me when they were in stock again. They haven't contacted me since. I can't seem to work out which device to disable in the device manager. Here's a screenshot of what I have: None of the keyboard devices have "Disable" in their context menus, only "Uninstall"... so you'll understand if I'm hesitant to try anything myself. Any advice on how to fix this?

• How can I extract data from Toshiba Satellite with a dead Windows installation?

  I've got a Toshiba Satellite (unknown model number but bought early 2010) running Windows Vista which throws a kernel error on boot. We don't have the restore/recovery CD any more to restore the Windows partition. I have managed to boot to a Live CD version of Ubuntu 10.10 and have mounted the internal hard drive (which takes nearly 8 minutes). I suspect that the hard drive is malfunctioning, however, because copy tasks of even 30 megs of data to an attached and mounted USB flash drive takes over an hour, and some files are mysteriously inaccessible (not a permissions issue). When browsing folders, it takes many minutes to populate the folder window even with a single tiny file. During the copy tasks, the hard disk sounds like it tries to sleep several times in rapid succession, then continues accessing, it sounds, at full throughput. I initially tried using scp (from the shell) to copy data but I encountered the same local problems. I don't know the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard disk, either. Is there a more effective way of going about recovering the data on the internal disk, assuming that I can't use a recovery CD and am too cheap to bring it in (for now, at least)?

• Opening notebooks

  I have a Compaq CQ40 which has a defective CPU fan, it seems unable to cool the notebook enough at this time, it is constantly running, and if you move the pc up/down to look under it, it makes some sort of chainsaw sound. I have tried to take out all the screws underneath, but I still have a problem with the plastic cover on the above; I am afraid I might break it since it seem to be connected with plastic clips underneath. I have fixed notebooks before, but this one seem new, how can I open the plastic cover above without breaking it? Any advice, tips and tricks would be so nice to have, not only for this notebook, but any future notebook also I might need to repair. It would be nice if anyone here knows a place with video tutorials on this subject as well.

• My iPhone, Macbook and Laptop won't connect to 192.168.1.*

  Previously I could connect perfectly with my iphone to my web server on 192.168.1.* but since I got a MacBook, I now can't even connect my iphone to either of the computers. I can connect to the wifi hub on my iphone, I can connect to the wifi hub on all the computers including my phone. Neither of my computers nor my iphone 5 can communicate with each other. What has happened? I've tried number of different local web servers, even tried the osx web server, but my iphone just wont connect to any.

• Vostro 1520 crash during bios update

  My Vostro 1520 (P8700 C2D) originally came with BIOS A02. This bios version have known problems with VT, so I had to upgrade to A05. During the upgrade, the notebook crashed. Needless to say, it won't boot anymore. The simple question is: is there a way to access the bios boot block to recover the bad flash with a crisis disk? I know that the MINI and the ALIENWARE models have this feature, but I can't seem to find anything about it in the Vostro machines. Any help will be much appreciated. PS: Dell's solution is to change the motherboard, but it will take several days, as the board isn't available in my country :( Regards, Deadmilkman

• Resolution is Being Stupid. Help me?

  I'm having trouble with a new computer I bought a few days ago. I have come to the conclusion that the resolution of the screen is too small, at the moment it is 1024x768 and I think it should be 1280x960, due to a message given at the resolution tab of the control panel. It states: (!) If your resolution is below 1280x960, some items on the screen may not fit on the screen. The computer is an Asus A54H and runs 64-bit operating system with Windows 7 Home Premium. • Toshiba Satellite C665 Rebooting from Standby

  I currently am working on a C665 with a strange issue. When the panel is closed the notebook will put itself to sleep in the usual way, and the power LED changes to the pulse to indicate that the device is asleep. However, when the panel is opened to resume using the notebook, the system will restart itself, instead beginning from the Toshiba logo and proceed to boot back in to W7. I should also note that each time this occurs, the "Windows Startup Recovery" option occurs, indicating that the system was not shut down correctly. Some things I have tried: Updated to latest Toshiba BIOS. Returned BIOS settings to their defaults. Swapped Memory to known good module, tested KGM in both memory slots within system. Confirmed that power settings are set to sleep/wake when power button is pressed. Ran a quick HDD fitness test using a parted magic USB stick. Checked for BSOD logs using BlueScreenView, none found. Ran src, no violations found. Any ideas? I have a good feeling the system is restarting itself, but in the event viewer there is a "Kernel Power" error, but it simply says "The system was not shut down correctly." Perhaps a bad driver? I'm not sure. Any advice would be great.

• Does Control Zone touchpad in HP notebooks have standard LMB/RMB clicks at the bottom of touchpad?

The deal is that every video says about those new features (which will be outdated when Windows 9 will come by) not about if it still has standard LMB/RMB click. Question: Does or does not Control Zone touchpade have mechanical left and right mouse button area at the bottom of it as every other touchpad?

• Applications on my laptop crashees every 10-20 minutes [closed]

  In my windows 7 home premium, several of my application crashes after some minutes even wehn I am not touching system. For example I have outlook 2007, that works fine, but suddenly crashes. The same about visual studio 2012. It is also crashes after some minute no matter if I am working on a project or I am not touching it. the same behaviour is there, for other applications (skype, oovoo and ...). I use Microsoft security essential and there is no virus on my system. I also checked my system with Sophos anti root kit and there is no root kit there. What would be the problem?

• Windows 7 "freezes" (chills?), and then "unfreezes" for about 1 minute.

  Hi, I have an Acer Timeline 1810T netbook (4GB RAM) with Windows 7 x64. About once or twice a day, it "freezes" - the reason i put this in quotation marks is that it does not really freeze, as in you cant move mouse, etc. I can move my mouse and jump between different applications, but I cant use the applications for anything. So I can jump between notepad and Firefox, but I cant browse to a new web page. I have been trying to determine the source of this misery for a while now, and I suspect it has something to do with the hard drive - indirectly if not directly. Does anyone have an idea of what these reading mean, or about the problem in general? • Hp Pavilion dv6000 wont boot right and freezes

  I have an hp pavilion dv6000 that was having windows issues recently including randomly freezing. I eventually concluded that the hard drive was bad (And I was correct as the bad drive started making funny noises and quit working soon after). So I replaced it with a known good drive and put windows on it and it worked for a few hours. After a few restarts startup didn't even make it to the login screen. It just stays at a lighted black screen until I restarted. After another restart it made it to windows but then froze after a few minutes. A few more restarts yielded one of these two results. Like I mentioned earlier I have a know good drive in it and I also replaced the memory that was in it with a know good stick along with running memtest with no errors. So What does that leave? a corrupted windows installation? Motherboard? CPU? Any ideas?

• Sony VAIO Broken Computer Screen automatically connect to external

  I have a SONY Vaio with a screen that's broken as in I only see white or black dots on the display. I would like to have it start automatically to the external, but my previous computer settings for an external display has it set on "extend" rather than "duplicate". Therefore, whenever I boot up, I have the extended screen on the external, which does me no good since I can't really do anything with my start bar still located on the broken screen. I hope that makes sense. Has anyone else run into this problem? I've seen some things about starting in BIOS. Will my broken computer screen still be able to display the contents when I'm in BIOS? How do I get there? or are there keystrokes for a Sony Vaio that will automatically let me duplicate screens or direct everything to the external? Thanks!

• problems with my touchpad on my netbook

  ive been having trouble with my touchpad its a synaptic pad. my problem is whenever i drag my finger across i a lot of times get this grey circle and i cant move anymore i have to take my finger off and start again its very annoying and the icon for the touchpad thats by the clock gets like a curved arrow in it and if i move my finger a little bit while this grey circle appears the arrow rotates in a circle its very weird! i have a Asus 1101HAB netbook and ive tried to update the driver when the asus updates appear and when i do it and restart the computer, then a couple days later maybe it pops up again saying i have an update and its for the touchpad and its the same version... not sure if its a bigger problem its only a week old that ive had this computer. If someone could help it would be much appreciated.
