  • Structure vs. programming

    Is it bad that I often find myself spending more time on program structure than actually writing code inside methods? Is this common? I feel I spend more time laying the foundation than actually building the house (metaphorically). While I understand that without a good foundation the house will cave in, but does it legitimately need to take half of the project to finalize code structure? I understand design patterns, and I know where to go if I need help on choosing one, but often I find myself doubting my own choices.

    My organization is migrating to the new Team Foundation Server 2010, and we all are busy experimenting with ALM features. I find it very exciting and I foresee quite a lot of possibilities for TFS 2010 getting integrated with the Dynamics product line. I hope most of us know about the Version Control capabilities. However, I see a strong possibilities of having Team Builds and other automations, thanks to the technologies like workflow foundation in .net which is now being actively used in various TFS scenarios.   Lots of experiments so there is more to come!!

  • TFS Backup Plan Wizard Tool

    With the release of the “September – 2010” TFS 2010 Power Tools, came an addition to the Team Foundation Server Administration Console.  This addition is the Team Foundation Backups Tree item.  The tool is used to create backup plans and to work with it you run through a wizard, just like you would in configuring TFS or any of the extensions it has. The areas covered through the tool include: Backup to a Network Backup Path, retention configuration. Under Advanced Options, the extension to be used for the Full and Transactional backups. The capability to include external databases, meaning, include the reporting databases and SharePoint databases as part of the plan. There are further options as you can see, that includes being able to define a task scheduler account, be able to set alerts for notifications on execution of the plans, and last the option to configure the schedule for the plan execution.  All in all a very good tool and great way to safeguard the investment you’ve made.

  • How to convince a non-technical client that their application spec needs to be simplified?

    Often times I am faced with the situation where a new client comes to me with an application that has literally 100s of unnecessary features and it is quite clear that things need to be drastically simplified for the project to have any chance of succeeding. How do you convince the client to take a more MVP approach and simplify? edit: So the current top answer is to provide the client with a time/cost estimate for the huge application. I'm not too fond of this answer because it doesn't address the real problem with this situation. And that is - it's a bad practice to spec out a massive application and then try and build it from the get go. I feel much more comfortable initially building a small, simple MVP foundation. And then adding small features to that foundation one by one. So how do I convince the client to approach building software in this way?

  • Cannot start service SPUserCodeV4 on computer

    When you create a sand boxed solution for SharePoint 2010 in Visual Studio 2010 and try to deploy the solution , you could get the error “Error occurred in deployment step ‘Retract Solution’: Cannot start service SPUserCodeV4 on computer”(See the Picture1 below). In order to fix this , you need to go to Central Administration -> System Settings -> Manage services on server and start service “Microsoft SharePoint Foundation User Code Service” If you are developing SharePoint on DC(Domain controller),you need to check the solution from my previous post. Versions: ClearCase: 7.1.1.2 Team Foundation Server: 2012 RTM Integration Tools: 2.2.20314.1 OS: Windows 2008 R2 ENT SP1 I was able to do a simple example migration of a few files by using the following approach: Using a dynamic view Creating a view shortcut drive (i.e. Z:\) Running the tools as a UI client (not as a windows service) Running the tools UI in user mode (do not “Run as Administrator”) Using the CC detailed history adapter Selecting the view shortcut drive (i.e. Z) on the Tools UI Connect to CC dialog Selecting the “Detect Changes in CC” option on the Tools UI Connect to CC dialog Changing the DisableTargetAnalysis value to True on the Tools UI configuration view I have yet to perform actual migrations for real projects, but will update this blog as I do.

Testing Support with Visual Studio 2010: Microsoft is going to add automated UI Testing support with Visual Studio 2010 with silverlight 5.0. So now we can test UI of Silverlight much faster. Better Support for RIA Services: RIA Services allows us to create N-tier application with silverlight via creating proxy classes on client and server both side.
