I can use the tlbimp.exe to generate a interop.CarCom.dll, and then use the COM through this interop dll, but I want this interop assembly to be generated automatically when I just add reference to the COM. • Clickonce installation fails after addition of WCF service project

  So I have a winform solution, deployed via clickonce. Eveything worked fine until i added a WCF project. (see error in parsing the manifest file at end of post) Now I notice that MSBuild compiles the service into a _PublishedWebsites dir. I don't know what the need for this is, but I am suspecting this is the cause of the problem. This wcf project references some other projects within the solution. I am actually hosting the wcf service within the application so I don't really need MSBuild to do all this for me. • Perl equivalent to Java's "throws" clause

  Is there a way in Perl to declare that a method can throw an error (or die)? EDIT: What interests me the most is a way to get the compiler or IDE to tell me I have an unchecked exception somewhere in my code. I always loved how in Java, a method could handle an Exception and/or throw it. The method signature allows to put "throws MyException", so a good IDE/compiler would know that if you use said method somewhere in your code, you'd have to check for the Exception or declare your function to "throws" the Exception further. I'm unable to find something alike in Perl. A collegue of mine wrote a method which "dies" on incorrect input, but I forget to eval-if($@) it... offcourse the error was only discovered while a user was running the application. (offcourse I doubt if there is any existing IDE that could find these kind of things for Perl, but atleast perl -cw should be able to, no?)

• MSBuild - setting a reference path

  I have several assemblies my project is dependant upon. These are stored in the Project's directory under the "Dependencies" folder. So something like this. Solution - Project - Dependancies FunkyAssembly.dll - bin - Debug - Release SomeCode.cs I've referenced FunkyAssembly.dll using Browse and in project.csproj I see <Reference Include="FunkyAssembly"> <HintPath>Dependancies\FunkyAssembly.dll</HintPath> </Reference> So far so good - except after a release build FunkyAssembly.dll is copied to the Release directory (not a problem in itself) but then future debug builds will reference this copy rather than the copy in Dependencies. You can see this if you at Path in the reference properties. This means that if Dependencies\FunkyAssembly.dll is updated the build won't pick it up as its referencing the old copy in bin/Release. Any way to FORCE the damn thing to pick up Dependencies\FunkyAssembly.dll rather than HINT?

• FastCGI and Apache 500 error intermittently

  I have a FastCGI (mod_fastcgi)problem. It happens every once in a while, and does not casue a complete server meltdown, just 500 errors. Here are a couple things. First I am using APC so PHP is in control of it's own processes, not FastCGI. Also, I have the webroot set as: /var/www/html And the fcgi-bin inside: /var/www/html/fcgi-bin First off here is the apache error_log: [Fri Jan 07 10:22:39 2011] [error] [client 50.16.222.82] (4)Interrupted system call: FastCGI: comm with server "/var/www/html/fcgi-bin/php.fcgi" aborted: select() failed, referer: http://www.domain.com/ I also ran strace on the 'fcgi-pm' process. • List.Sort in C#: comparer being called with null object

  I am getting strange behaviour using the built-in C# List.Sort function with a custom comparer. For some reason it sometimes calls the comparer class's Compare method with a null object as one of the parameters. But if I check the list with the debugger there are no null objects in the collection. My comparer class looks like this: public class DelegateToComparer<T> : IComparer<T> { private readonly Func<T,T,int> _comparer; public int Compare(T x, T y) { return _comparer(x, y); } public DelegateToComparer(Func<T, T, int> comparer) { _comparer = comparer; } } This allows a delegate to be passed to the List.Sort method, like this: mylist.Sort(new DelegateToComparer<MyClass>( (x, y) => { return x.SomeProp.CompareTo(y.SomeProp); }); So the above delegate will throw a null reference exception for the x parameter, even though no elements of mylist are null. UPDATE: Yes I am absolutely sure that it is parameter x throwing the null reference exception! UPDATE: Instead of using the framework's List.Sort method, I tried a custom sort method (i.e. new BubbleSort().Sort(mylist)) and the problem went away. As I suspected, the List.Sort method passes null to the comparer for some reason.

  I'm writing a SQL Server 2008 report that will compare genetic test results for animals. A genetic test consists of an animalId, a gene and a result. Not all animals will have the same genes tested but I need to be able to display the results side-by-side for a given set of animals and only include the genes that are present for at least one of the selected animals. My TestResult table has the following data in it: animalId gene result 1 a CC 1 b CT 1 d TT 2 a CT 2 b CT 2 c TT 3 a CT 3 b TT 3 c CC 3 d CC 3 e TT I need to generate a result set that looks like the following. Note that Animal 3 is not being displayed (user doesn't want to see its results) and neither are results for Gene "e" since neither Animal 1 nor Animal 2 have a result for that gene: SireID SireResult CalfID CalfResult Gene 1 CC 2 CT a 1 CT 2 CT b 1 NULL 2 TT c 1 TT 2 NULL d But I can only manage to get this: SireID SireResult CalfID CalfResult Gene 1 CC 2 CT a 1 CT 2 CT b NULL NULL 2 TT c 1 TT NULL NULL d This is the query I'm using.   Hi, I'm writing an app that connect to a website and read one line from it. I mean, I close the BufferedReader in the last line, but I do not close the InputStreamReader. Should I create a standalone InputStreamReader from the connection.getInputStream, and a BufferedReader from the standalone InputStreamReader, than close all the two readers? I think it will be better to place the closing methods in the finally block like this: InputStreamReader isr = null; BufferedReader br = null; try{ URLConnection connection = new URL("www.example.com").openConnection(); isr = new InputStreamReader(connection.getInputStream()); br = new BufferedReader(isr); String response = br.readLine(); }catch (Exception e) { //exception handling }finally{ br.close(); isr.close(); } But it is ugly, because the closing methods can throw exception, so I have to handle or throw it.   I am having a problem where in the started Intent, the findViewById returns null. Is there anything special I should know about starting a new intent?   Hello I have a Biztalk 2006 R2 project (used with ESB Guidance 1) I am calling from orchstration to a static method in c# code, this method uses a class to load a file data into xlang message body at part 0 When i pass filepath which doesnt exists the inside class catch the exception but dont throw it up (in the static method there is a catch block and in the orchstration there is the real handling of the exception) The static method is : public static XLANGMessage LoadFileIntoMessage(XLANGMessage message, string filePath,Encoding encoding) { try { IStreamFactory sf = new FileStreamFactory(filePath,encoding); message[0].LoadFrom(sf); return message; } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } } The Class which load the file stream is : private class FileStreamFactory : IStreamFactory { string _fname; Encoding _encoding; public FileStreamFactory(string fname,Encoding encoding) { _fname = fname; _encoding = encoding; } public Stream CreateStream() { try { StreamReader sr; sr = new StreamReader ( _fname, _encoding ); return sr.BaseStream; } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } } } I call the static method from the orchstration and expect to catch the exception in my orchstration after the class and the emthod gets it

• Setting nested object to null when selected option has empty value

  Hello, I have a Class which models a User and another which models his country. Something like this: public class User{ private Country country; //other attributes and getter/setters } public class Country{ private Integer id; private String name; //other attributes and getter/setters } I have a Spring form where I have a combobox so the user can select his country or can select the undefined option to indicate he doen't want to provide this information. So I have something like this: <form:select path="country"> <form:option value="">-Select one-</form:option> <form:options items="${countries}" itemLabel="name" itemValue="id"/> </form:select> In my controller I get the autopopulated object with the user information and I want to have country set to null when the "-Select one-" option has been selected. So I have set a initBinder with a custom editor like this: @InitBinder protected void initBinder(WebDataBinder binder) throws ServletException { binder.registerCustomEditor(Country.class, "country", new CustomCountryEditor()); } and my editor do something like this: public class CustomCountryEditor(){ @Override public String getAsText() { //I return the Id of the country } @Override public void setAsText(String str) { //I search in the database for a country with id = new Integer(str) //and set country to that value //or I set country to null in case str == null } } When I submit the form it works because when I have country set to null when I have selected "-Select one-" option or the instance of the country selected. The problem is that when I load the form I have a method like the following one to load the user information. @ModelAttribute("user") public User getUser(){ //loads user from database } The object I get from getUser() has country set to a specific country (not a null value), but in the combobox is not selected any option. I've debugged the application and the CustomCountryEditor works good when setting and getting the text, thoughgetAsText method is called for every item in the list "countries" not only for the "country" field. Any idea? Is there a better way to set null the country object when I select no country option in the combobox? Thanks

• .NET: Avoidance of custom exceptions by utilising existing types, but which?

  Consider the following code (ASP.NET/C#): private void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!SetupHelper.SetUp()) { throw new ShitHitFanException(); } } I've never been too hesitant to simply roll my own exception type, basically because I have found (bad practice, or not) that mostly a reasonable descriptive type name gives us enough as developers to go by in order to know what happened and why something might have happened. Sometimes the existing .NET exception types even accommodate these needs - regardless of the message. In this particular scenario, for demonstration purposes only, the application should die a horrible, disgraceful death should SetUp not complete properly (as dictated by its return value), but I can't find an already existing exception type in .NET which would seem to suffice; though, I'm sure one will be there and I simply don't know about it. Brad Abrams posted this article that lists some of the available exception types. I say some because the article is from 2005, and, although I try to keep up to date, it's a more than plausible assumption that more have been added to future framework versions that I am still unaware of. Of course, Visual Studio gives you a nicely formatted, scrollable list of exceptions via Intellisense - but even on analysing those, I find none which would seem to suffice for this situation... ApplicationException: ...when a non-fatal application error occurs The name seems reasonable, but the error is very definitely fatal - the app is dead. ExecutionEngineException: ...when there is an internal error in the execution engine of the CLR Again, sounds reasonable, superficially; but this has a very definite purpose and to help me out here certainly isn't it. HttpApplicationException: ...when there is an error processing an HTTP request Well, we're running an ASP.NET application! But we're also just pulling at straws here. InvalidOperationException: ...when a call is invalid for the current state of an instance This isn't right but I'm adding it to the list of 'possible should you put a gun to my head, yes'. OperationCanceledException: ...upon cancellation of an operation the thread was executing Maybe I wouldn't feel so bad using this one, but I'd still be hijacking the damn thing with little right. You might even ask why on earth I would want to raise an exception here but the idea is to find out that if I were to do so then do you know of an appropriate exception for such a scenario? And basically, to what extent can we piggy-back on .NET while keeping in line with rationality?

However, as above, the version number used in this app is 5.0.28. Any suggestions for how to find out what might be triggering this error?

• Connection timed out exception, why?

  I am developing an application which uses embedded tomcat server 7, and deploys a web application on embedded server. My application accesses the embedded webapp through Rest APIs, but my clients are getting Connection Timed Out exceptions and port is also not blocked. I never gets this exception when I install this application on my local machine. Some points: IP address is used in the host name part (They are able to access this IP address on other port) Port is not blocked We are using Apache HttpClient library to access the URL Timeout interval seems not to be an issue. What are the possible reasons for this exception Connection Timed Out? or How can I simulate this problem on my local machine? Any pointers would be helpful.

Why is that? I thought the both values the function returns (reference to const char* "" and reference to a static member) cannot be temporary.

• How to simulate OutOfMemory exception

  I need to refactor my project in order to make it immune to OutOfMemory exception. There are huge collections used in my project and by changing one parameter I can make my program to be more accurate or use less of the memory... OK, that's the background. What I would like to do is to run the routines in a loop: Run the subroutines with the default parameter. Catch the OutOfMemory exception, change the parameter and try to run it again. Do the 2nd point until parameters allow to run the subroutines without throwing the exception (usually, there will be only one change needed). Now, I would like to test it. I know, that I can throw the OutOfMemory exception on my own, but I would like to simulate some real situation. So the main question is: Is there a way of setting some kind of memory limit for my program, after reaching which the OutOfMemory exception will be thrown automatically? For example, I would like to set a limit, let's say 400MB of memory for my whole program to simulate the situation when there is such an amount of memory available in the system. Can it be done?
