• Applocker custom extension (Java, CPL, MSC etc.)

  We have a Terminal server and want to prevent users from running inappropriate software. Previously we used Software Restriction Policies for this purpose. Now, Microsoft seems to recommend Applocker instead. However we found no possibilities to add custom extensions like JAR, CPL, MSC etc. which was possible in Software Restriction Policies. Do you know how to add custom extensions to the Applocker policies in Windows 2008? Or how can we block custom script interpreters like Perl etc.?

• How can I force Parallels' networking to obtain an IP through a wireless router?

  Here is my setup. I have a Macbook, Thunderbolt display and an Ethernet connection plugged into the Thunderbolt display. During the day, most of my network use can (and should) operate across the ethernet associated with my display. However, I also need to be able to connect up to a wireless router. This hasn't been a problem on the Mac OS X side, but the program that I need to run on the router has to obtain an IP address from the wireless access point. Considering my current setup, how can I leave it so that I can access the internet in OS X, yet have my Window 7 instance running in Parallels, get it's assigned IP address from a wireless router that my Mac is also connected to? I've fiddled around with the Parallel's network settings for an hour, and I can't get Parallel's to see the router, even though my Mac is certainly connected to it.

  I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems).   I have the apache2.0, PHP5.2.4 and the directive in the httpd.conf: AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .php .php3 .php4 .php5 .php6 AddType directive is used to maps the given filename extensions onto the specified content type. This is the only meaning of this directive. But why does this method switch off PHP handler, that assigned .php extensions, and I can view source code of scripts in my browser? And another: AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .php Why does this method switch on PHP handler? This simply must send header "Content-Type: application/x-httpd-php5" to my browser and this must be only meaning of directive AddType from mod_mime. I'm confused. Thanks for your replies.

• b43 module loaded, but no interface showed up

  I'm using CentOS 6.3 x86_64 on a hardware with a BCM43224 chip for wi-fi. I installed the b43-fwcutter module and then run modprobe b43, with no error messages. • amd gpu but display on intel integrated graphics

  On my Ubuntu 12.04 I connected my monitor to the onboard intel graphics. I'd like to use my ati radeon 6770 for opencl tasks (e.g. bitcoin mining). So far I couldn't figure out how to get the ati driver working. When calling "aticonfig --initial -f" it always writes a new xorg.conf that ignores the intel graphics. At boot time it works only when I attached the monitor to the ati card.   Trying to install Vanilla 2 locally using MAMP i got the error: "You must have the MySQL driver for PDO enabled in order for Vanilla to connect to your database". When I check phpinfo() I see: --with-pdo-mysql=shared,/Applications/MAMP/Library --with-pdo-pgsql=shared,/Applications/MAMP/Library/pg When I go and check out those paths I find the files: libpq.5.dylib libpq.dylib libpq.5.2.dylib When I check my php.ini file I see: ; Extensions extension=pdo_mysql.so In php.ini the path to the extension dir is correct (checked it manually): extension_dir = "/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5.3/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/" In this folder I find the file: pdo_mysql.so phpinfo() gives me two sections: PDO PDO drivers: sqlite, sqlite2 and pdo_sqlite SQLite Library: 3.6.22 So everything seems to be fine, but can't get the PDO MySQL driver working :(

• How can I force Firefox to select the tab to the right on tab close?

  I'm using TMP 0.3.8.2 and a host of other extensions on FF 3.6.3 on OSX 10.6. I've tried disabling all other extensions that might interfere with tab settings but it's hard to keep track of everything because I have literally 60 (about 30 are disabled though) that are on and off in various configurations. I'm wondering if there's a way to FORCE Firefox to select the tab to the right on closing a tab, in such a way that it overrides any other setting anywhere else. I realize the prospects for this are dim. Thanks.

• Homegroup and NTFS permissions

  I'm running a copy of Windows 7 as a "server" at my home. I have several file shares that I want to make available to specific users only. I've modified the NTFS permissions to only allow these users to access their respective shares. However, while a locally logged on user can access the actual folders just fine, over the network the remote access is authenticating as HomeGroupUser$ rather than the actual user in question, as shown by the Computer Management panel for shares. I do have matching user accounts (i.e. my username locally is abc and a parallel account with username abc and the same password exists on the server machine). I don't want to disable homegroup because there are other shares where homegroup authentication would be desirable, especially for some people where they don't have a parallel account. Is there a way to get the system to authenticate first by matching username, and then by homegroup authentication if there's no matching user?

• OS X Automator empty, blank or null value.

  I have some data files mostly excel, word and pdf files most of the files have no extension on them. So they are missing the .doc .xls. This data needs to be used in a Windows environment now. I have created automator apps for each of the file types I want to add the ext onto. The problem is it also adds the extension to files that already have an extension. So data.xls becomes data.xls.xls I would like to figure a way to only add the extenion to the files without extension. How do I tell the finder filter that i only want it to return files without extensions. I see how to add a line to filter by extension but I don't know how to let it know I want only blank or null or files without any extensions. Thanks

• How do I make zeitgeist work in Arch?

  I've been trying to setup Zeitgeist on my Gnome-shell system for a couple of days, but I'm yet to get it to work. I've done everything I could think of, i.e. installing zeitgeist from [extra], as well as libqzeitgeist. I've also installed all Gnome extensions created by Seif (https://extensions.gnome.org/accounts/profile/seif), since they're the reason I'm installing the package in the first place. I've tried running "zeitgeist-daemon --replace" and then "gnome-shell --replace", but nothing seems to work. According to Der Harm's wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Der_harm#Gnome_Zeitgeist), the Zeitgeist daemon doesn't need to be explicitly started, but even if it was, I don't know how to do it (since it's not in /etc/rc.d, I bet adding "zeitgeist" to my rc.conf wouldn't do any good either). I can't believe there isn't a very simple setup here, please help me see what I'm missing!

• Optimal way to make MySQL backups for fairly large databases (MyISAM / InnoDB)

  Currently we have one beefy MySQL database that runs a couple of high traffic Django based websites as well as some e-commerce websites of decent size. As a result we have a fair amount of large databases using both InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Unfortunately we've recently hit a wall due to the amount of traffic so I've setup another master server to help alleviate reads / backups. Now at the moment I simply use mysqldump with a few arguments and it's proven to be fine.. until now. Obviously mysqldump is a slow quick method however I believe we've outgrown its use. I now need a good alternative and have been looking into utilizing Maatkits mk-parallel-dump utility or an LVM snapshot solution. Succinct short version: I have a fairly large MySQL databases I need to backup Current method using mysqldump is inefficient and slow (causing issues) Looking into something such as mk-parallel-dump or LVM snapshots Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated - since I have to re-do how we're doing things I rather have it done properly / most efficient :).

• How to synchonise address books across multiple PC's

  I am using Thunderbird 15.0.1 on two different Windows computers (Vista and Win 7). I maintain the email list for a local club, and often need to send out emails to all members from my home and office Pc's. I use a Thunderbird Address Book to maintain a list of club members and would like any changes made to that list to synchronise to both machines. Can anyone recommend a good way of doing this? I've found a couple of extensions that claim to do this, but both seem to have review that suggest they no longer function correctly since they are quite old extensions. Is there another tool that I would be better off using? Rob

• How to set file associations and explorer options in one go?

  This has been itching me for quite a long time. When I come on a new computer with any version of Windows, I need to: un-hide file extensions set explorer default view to list instead of icons set the file extensions like h c cpp so they don't open Visual C++ (which can take up to 20 seconds!) each time I double click on them, opening them with something like Notepad++ instead. Isn't there some program to quickly set thoses options to something I want, like some standalone exe, or some generic registry file I can execute when I come on a new machine? I'm a developer and I can't believe I'm wasting so much time on those &*$%@# things.

• Where would an S3 upload speed cap originate?

  I do a ton of uploading to S3 and am experiencing capped speeds and I can't quite figure out how to address it. The setup: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, external HD, using a Java based upload tool called Jsh3ll and custom VBS scripts to kick the jobs off. Running one process at a time, I am always limited to about 4mbps. I have FiOS at 35/35mbps speeds, so it isn't an outright limit. AND, I can run parallel instances and can go all the way up to 35mbps, so I know the problem isn't gateway/nic/machine/amazon related. Running parallel instances works to a degree as a solution, but increases the complexity of my workflow greatly. Solving this would make my life dramatically easier. When I was first doing this I was playing around with a bunch of Windows TCP parameters and was able to briefly get unconstrained bandwidth, but it wasn't repeatable. Thoughts?

• Is there some way Linux editors can tell the programming language without the file extension?

  I am editing some scripts on Linux without the languages file extensions, and it seems that the editors, namely vi, nano and gedit are not applying syntax highlighting because the filenames don't use the language extensions. Is there some parameters to be passed or some setting that can enable them to recognize the language? Update: After some googling I realize that bash has that ability, at least to do some parsing or check the shebang at the top determine the language. By default Ubuntu does not install the complete vim package, so after installing it, the shell files are recognized. I don't know about nano or gedit, but vi and its graphical counterpart will do.

• Google Chrome passphrase : where is it?

  Every time I do a fresh install, Google Chrome asks me for my passphrase. Have searched high and low in Google's help forum and have yet to receive or find any form of response. When I do a fresh install, if I try to enter the passphrase (with all possible passwords i can recall) nothing works and I can't recover my extensions, bookmarks etc. On the other hand, if I wait a bit, everything falls to place. I close that window asking for passphrase and all my extensions, bookmarks are back. The failure to enter a proper passphrase code gets me a message to change my passphrase in my account settings. Who knows where that is! No one at Google's forum seems to know anything about this "passphrase".

  I have installed PHP 5.2.13 through Web Platform Installer on IIS 7.5/windows 2008 R2 Now I'm trying to install additional PHP extensions, such as mcrypt, so I downloaded the compiled .zip file from the php windows binaries site. I put the relevant dlls in the extensions folder, and added the lines in the php.ini: [PHP_MCRYPT] extension=php_mcrypt.dll After restarting IIS, no application was working. This was with VC6 compiled/non thread-safe compiled version of PHP 5.2.13 .zip package. I also tried with the thread-safe version, which prevented IIS to restart and forced me to reboot the server. What am I doing wrong here?

  I started using DOS back before Windows, and ever since have taken it for granted that Every file has a file extension, like .txt, .jpg, etc That extension is always short (usually 3 letters) I learned early that the extension is basically just a hint to the OS as to what the content type is. Eventually I got exposed to Mac and Linux, files with no extensions, etc. And of course I've seen shorter extensions, like .rb and .py. I just noticed that markdown-formatted files can have the extension .markdown, and it made me wonder - how long can that extension be? If I make it .mycrazylongextensiontypewoohoo, will certain operating systems or programs choke on the file? Are extension names generally short just for convenience, or is this based on some limitation, legacy or current?

• Websocket handshake response not forwarded from TCP to client

  I am trying to create a websocket server. I can see the websocket client's opening handhshake. My response to it is received by the client laptop (I can see this on wireshark). So the TCP connection has been established. But the client (a chrome websocket client extension) does not receive the handshake packet. What could be a possible reason for TCP to not forward the handshake to the client or for the client to not be able to read the TCP message? I would like to copy that to another location so the result is a folder with the same file and folder structure, but with all files in 8.3 format. How to do it? PS: Well, some files have extensions with more than 3 characters (e.x. home.sh3d, windows.theme etc.), so when I say about transforming all filenames to 8.3 I would like to say about transforming them to a 8.X format (i.e., to do not change extensions).

  Like the title says, I need help creating a batch file to replace "." with "-", however I need to perserve the file extensions and it needs to work through the subfolders. I found another post on here that got the effect I wanted but it also swapped the . in my file extensions. I am a completely ignorant regarding shell script so please be detailed in your response. I have no idea what any of the switches mean or even how to specify the path for that matter. Thanks!
