• How to record different authentication types (username / password vs token based) in audit log

  I have two types of users for my system, normal human users with a username / password, and delegation authorized accounts through OAuth (i.e. using a token identifier). The information that is stored for each is quite different, and are managed by different subsytems. They do however interact with the same tables / data within the system, so I need to maintain the audit trail regardless of whether human user, or token-based user modified the data. My solution at the moment is to have a table called something like AuditableIdentity, and then have the two types inheriting off that table (either in the single table, or as two seperate tables with 1 to 1 PK with AuditableIdentity. All operations would use the common AuditableIdentity PK for CreatedBy, ModifiedBy etc columns. There isn't any FK constraint on the audit columns, so any text can go in there, but I want an easy way to easily determine whether it was a human or system that made the change, and joining to the one AuditableIdentity table seems like a clean way to do that? Is there a best practice for this scenario? Is this an appropriate way of approaching the problem - or would you not bother with the common table and just rely on joins (to the two seperate un-related user / token tables) later to determine which user type matches which audit records?

In the past week I've been doing market research looking for answers to the following key issues: The project should should be: Requirements SSO solution for web applications. Integrates into existing developed products. has Policy based password security (Length, Complexity, Duration and co) Security Policy can be managed using a web interface. Customizable user interface (the password prompt and co. screens). Highly available (99.9%) Scalable. Runs on Red Hat Linux. Nice to have Contains user Groups & Roles. Written in Java. Free Software (open source) solution. None of the solutions came up so far are "killer choice" which leads me to think I will be tooling several projects (OWASP, AcegiSecurity + X??) hence this discussion. We are ISV delivering front-end & backend application suite.   I have a form with an OleDbConnection object on it. This form fails to load in the Form Designer with the message: One or more errors encountered while loading the designer. The errors are listed below. Some errors can be fixed by rebuilding your project, while others may require code changes. Invalid authorization specification at ADODB.ConnectionClass.Open(String ConnectionString, String UserID, String Password, Int32 Options) ... (stack trace continues into user code) I've tracked this down to the OleDbConnection string. If I hardcode in the server IP, username/password/dbinstance into the constructor of the GUI form then the form will load in the designer. At run-time it is not an issue because we require the user to provide the login details. The question: Is it possible to use the OleDbConnection and the Form designer without supplying the database credentials in the source code of the form? For example, is there a property of the OleDbConnection or Form that I can set so that it doesn't need to access the database during Form design? My concern is that if we ever move the database server or change the login that the code will stop working in the designer.

So far I've only seen Roboform's ability to fill out fields in web browsers and Windows GUI apps. I'm an app developer and sometimes I need to use Telnet/SSH. My SSH client of choice is PuTTY, but I can't find any way to integrate Roboform with PuTTY. Is this possible? If not, is there another [free] SSH client that will work with Roboform?

• Firefox Basic HTTP Auth not remembering credentials if username include backslash?

  Firefox (3.6.3) does not seem to remember basic http auth credentials when the username includes a backslash. I clicked on 'Remember' and 'Change' many times but the Authentication popup (with the part after the backslash filled into the username field) keeps showing up when I load the site. Any ideas why this happens and how to work around it?

  All of the computers in our domain are running Windows XP/Server 2003 and above (with one exception, a Win2Ksp4 server, which is not a domain controller). I intend to disable the LM hashes via group policy as indicated in KB299656, and want to ensure that there won't be any unforseen problems or side-effects.   I had a working subversion server which used the passwd file which stores passwords in clear text. My requirements changed so that passwords now need to be encrypted. I did everything according to the book to use SASL, or so I believe, but now only the linux command line can authenticate. My OSX users, which also use command line, and my WinXp users, which use TortoiseSVN get errors. Linux versions are 1.6.11. OSX versions are 1.6.17. And TortoiseSVN versions are 1.7.4. /opt/subversion/QRpage/conf/svnserve.conf: [general] anon-access = none auth-access = write realm = ABC [sasl] use-sasl = true min-encryption = 128 max-encryption = 256 /etc/sasl2/svn.conf: pwcheck_method: auxprop auxprop_plugin: sasldb sasldb_path: /etc/sasldb2 mech_list: DIGEST-MD5 Then I add new users via: saslpasswd2 -c -f /etc/sasldb2 -u ABC dacracot But for instance OSX users get this error trying to check out: $ svn co svn://svn.nowhere.org/QRpage svn: Cannot negotiate authentication mechanism

• Have you ever used kon-boot?

  Has anyone here ever used kon-boot? I guess it may work because of the few blog posts about it but I feel kinda concerned and am interested at hearing experiences from anyone who have used multiple times with no side effects. I am slightly worried for any direct memory altering it tries to do. I am also worried if this will do its job fine to hide the fact it puts in a low level trojan or if the author planned to do anything like that in a future release as it looks like closed source from the site. Also I don't intend to gain illegal access but I find these sort of things very useful for my box of live discs I take every where, just in case. • Map FTP folder to folder on different FTP server

  In my team we work a lot with FTP. We upload and download files from several different servers daily. Currently every member of the team manages access credentials to each FTP server locally on their own machine. I am looking for a way to set up a central FTP server that we can connect to, and from there, navigate to folders that each represent one of the other FTP servers that we connect to daily. Something like this: In-house central FTP server: |- FolderA --> server A root folder |- FolderB --> server B root folder |- FolderC --> server C root folder A setup like this, would mean that we can manage access credentials on the central FTP server, and team members would only need to have the access credentials to the central FTP server, and from there they could navigate to the other servers through these "virtual" folders. We could potentially develop our own custom FTP server that just forward requests to the remote FTP servers, but i feel like something like this (or something similar) would already have been done. • One time use FTP passwords with C-Panel/WHM?

  I'm in a position where I need to give about a dozen people one shot FTP access to a domain in order to upload their work. I'd like to use single shot passwords, e.g once they login and upload, that's it. Single use. I don't see any obvious means of doing this conveniently with C-Panel. Prior to going through the bother of writing a WHM add on to accomplish the same, I'd like to make sure that I'm not re-inventing the wheel. Thanks in advance.

• Why does this work: Windows same local admin username and password, able to access other computer?

  I've two machines MachineA and MachineB. Both have two local accounts which have same username . Both accounts are local admin on those machines. If they have same password, I'm able to access \\MachineA\C$ from MachineB. But if I change any one password above doesn't work. And it prompts for username and password. Now if I provide MachineA\username and password, it then connects. Why isn't there a prompt for password when passwords are same? I expected passwords to be hashed with random salt, how does windows know passwords are same and authorize access? These machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2. PS. I've created following reg key to enable drive access HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to 1

• Making it Easier for Older Users to Login to Multiple Accounts

  I currently do consulting for a small business that has multiple applications that they need to login too. I'm trying to get them to start using Basecamp and Zendesk to make all of our lives easier when it comes to collaboration on big projects and quick helpdesk ticket items. However, I have recently been informed that it is difficult for them to remember all of these websites etc... to login too. However the login information is the same. Right now they have to login to: Windows Login Gmail I want them additionally to login to Basecamp Zendesk This is just a generation or two gap between myself and them, so I'm wondering what others do to solve these problems. Is there some way we could configure USB thumbdrives that somehow have Lastpass or something on that when plugged into the computer automatically log them into their Windows account, then when they were to say visit the Basecamp account would automatically log them into that? I think the security risk (of a list thumbdrive) is well worth the ability to use these extra applications. Unless anyone else has any other ways for making it easier for users to login to multiple sites.

  I hate it when it asks me for password when I'm at home getting away from a computer for a while. I do like it having a screensaver though. But for some reason I see that password settings for the screensaver is merged with the password settings for waking from sleep. And waking password is an essential security feature for me. Essentially when Im not in a secured environment I close the lid when going away from the laptop even for a minute, but at home I want it to stay open. Is there a way to have it ask for password only after sleep and not after screensaver?

  This isn't a huge deal, because there's very little on the server (literally a file or two) that we actually need off of it. But we disabled root logins as a security measure and can't remember any of our other user passwords. I'm assuming that there's nothing we can do at this point to get into the server? I'm sitting next to the box... Update Oops... actually, I need to export an SVN off of this server. So yeah, there's stuff I need.

  I understand that when windows caches user credentials, these can sometimes be used by malicious parties to access other machines once a machine containing cached credentials is compromised, a method known as "pass the hash"[1]. For this reason I would like to get control over what's cached to reduce the risk of cached credentials being used maliciously. It is possible to prevent all caching by zeroing HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CachedLogonsCount, but this is too indiscriminate: laptops users need to be able to login when away from the network.
