• Play in NetBeans IDE (Part 2)

  Peter Hilton was one of many nice people I met for the first time during the last few days constituting JAX London. He did a session today on the Play framework which, if I understand it correctly, is an HTML5 framework. It doesn't use web.xml, Java EE, etc. It uses Scala internally, as well as in its templating language.  Support for Play would, I guess, based on the little I know about it right now, consist of extending the HTML5 application project, which is new in NetBeans IDE 7.3. The workflow I imagine goes as follows. You'd create a new HTML5 application project, at which point you can choose a variety of frameworks and templates (Coffee Script, Angular, etc), which comes out of the box with the HTML5 support (i.e., Project Easel) in NetBeans IDE 7.3. Then, once the project is created, you'll right-click it and go to the Project Properties dialog, where you'll be able to enable Play support: At this stage, i.e., when you've checked the checkbox above and then clicked OK, all the necessary Play files will be added to your project, e.g., the routes file and the application.conf, for example. And then you have a Play application. • Defining reliable SIlverlight 4 architecture

  Hello everybody, It's my first question on SO. I know that there were many topics on Silverlight and architecture but didn't find answers that satisfies me. I'm ASP.NET MVC developer and are used to work on architectures built with the best practices (loose coupling with DI, etc.) Now I'm faced to the new Silverlight 4 project and would like to be sure I'm doing the best choices as I'm not experienced. Main features required by the applications are as follows : use existing SQL Server Database but with possibility to move to the cloud. using EF4 for the data acess with SQL Server. exitensibility : adding new modules without changing the main host. loose coupling. I was looking at different webcasts (Taulty, etc.), blogs about Silverlight and came up with the following architecture. EF 4 for data access (as specified with the requirements) WCF RIA Services for mid-tiers controling access to data for queries and enabling end-to-end support for data validation, authentication and roles. MEF Support for enabling modules. Unity 2.0 for DI. The problem is that I don't know how to define a reliable architecture where all these elements play well together. Should I use a framework instead like Prism or Caliburn? But for now I'm not sure what scenarios they support. What's the best usages for Unity in Silverlight ? I used to use IoC in ASP.NET MVC for loos coupling and other things like interception for audit logging. It seems that for Silverlight Unity doesn't support Interception. I would like to use it to enable loose coupling and to enable to move to the cloud if needed. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Where should I declare my CDI resources?

  JSR-299 (CDI) introduces the (unfortunately named) concept of a resource: http://docs.jboss.org/weld/reference/1.0.0/en-US/html/resources.html#d0e4373 You can think of a resource in this nomenclature as a bridge between the Java EE 6 brand of dependency injection (@EJB, @Resource, @PersistenceContext and the like) and CDI's brand of dependency injection. The general gist seems to be that somewhere (and this will be the root of my question) you declare what amounts to a bridge class: it contains fields annotated both with Java EE's @EJB or @PersistenceContext or @Resource annotations and with CDI's @Produces annotations. The net effect is that Java EE 6 injects a persistence context, say, where it's called for, and CDI recognizes that injected PersistenceContext as a source for future injections down the line (handled by @Inject). My question is: what is the community's consensus--or is there one--on: what this bridge class should be named where this bridge class should live whether it's best to localize all this stuff into one class or make several of them ...? Left to my own devices, I was thinking of declaring a single class called CDIResources and using that as the One True Place to link Java EE's DI with CDI's DI. Many examples do something similar, but I'm not clear on whether they're "just" examples or whether that's a good way to do it. Thanks.

• Validation without ServiceLocator

  Hi, I am getting back again and again to it thinking about the best way to perform validation on POCO objects that need access to some context (ISession in NH, IRepository for example). The only option I still can see is to use S*ervice Locator*, so my validation would look like: public User : ICanValidate { public User() {} // We need this constructor (so no context known) public virtual string Username { get; set; } public IEnumerable<ValidationError> Validate() { if (ServiceLocator.GetService<IUserRepository>().FindUserByUsername(Username) != null) yield return new ValidationError("Username", "User already exists.") } } I already use Inversion Of control and Dependency Injection and really don't like the ServiceLocator due to number of facts: Harder to maintain implicit dependencies. Harder to test the code. Potential threading issues. Explicit dependency only on the ServiceLocator. The code becomes harder to understand. Need to register the ServiceLocator interfaces during the testing. But on the other side, with plain POCO objects, I do not see any other way of performing the validation like above without ServiceLocator and only using IoC/DI. So the question would be: is there any way to use DI/IoC for the situation described above? Thanks, Dmitriy.

  Hi guys, I have a EJB module in remote Glassfish server and application client in my computer. I want to connect from the application client to the remote EJB. Here is the my EJB interface: @Remote public interface BookEJBRemote { public String getTitle(); } Here is the my ejb: @Stateless public class BookEJB implements BookEJBRemote { @Override public String getTitle() { return "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"; } } I have several questions : Can I use Dependency Injection in the remote application client to connect to the ejb? If so what can i do to achieve this. Do i need to configure in the sun-ejb-jar.xml and sun-application-client.xml? In other words, if i use DI like @EJB MyEJBRemote ejb; How application client container know what ejb to be injected? Where should i specify the information? How can i run the application client? I tried to run package-appclient in the glassfish server to get appclient.jar and copy it to my computer. Then i type appclient.jar -client myAppClient.jar . It didn't work. How do i point the target server? if i cannot use DI in the client then i guess i have to use JNDI lookup. Do i need to configure jndi name in sun-ejb-jar.xml or in the sun-application-client.xml? No matter how i try i never manage to run application client ? Can you guys put some working example? And thank you for every advises and examples?

• Formatting the parent and child nodes of a Treeview that is populated by a XML file

  Hello Everyone, I'm very new to xml so I hope I'm not asking any silly question here. I'm currently working on populating a treeview from an XML file that is not hierarchically structured. In the xml file that I was given the child and parent nodes are defined within the attributes of the item element. How would I be able to utilize the attributes in order for the treeview to populate in the right hierarchical order. (Example Mary Jane should be a child node of Peter Smith). • Dependency Injection and decoupling of software layers

  I am trying to implement Dependency Injection to make my app tester friendly. I have a rather basic doubt. Data layer uses SqlConnection object to connect to a SQL server database. SqlConnection object is a dependency for data access layer. In accordance with the laws of dependency injection, we must not new() dependent objects, but rather accept them through constructor arguments. Not wanting to upset the DI gods, I dutifully create a constructor in my DAL that takes in SqlConnection. Business layer calls DAL. Business layer must therefore, pass in SqlConnection. Presentation layer calls Business layer. Hence it too, must pass in SqlConnection to business layer. This is great for class isolation and testability. But didn't we just couple the UI and Business layers to a specific implementation of the data layer which happens to use a relational database? Why do the Presentation and Business layers need to know that the underlying data store is SQL? What if the app needs to support multiple data sources other than SQL server (such as XML files, Comma delimited files etc.) Furthermore, what if I add another object upon which my data layer is dependent on (say, a second database). Now, I have to modify the upper layers to pass in this new object. How can I avoid this merry-go-round and reap all the benefits of DI without the pain?

The application works fine when creating a directory on the web server, however, it does not work when it tries to create a directory on our remote fileserver. The fileserver and the webserver are in the same domain. I have created a local user in our domain, "DOMAIN\aspnet". The local user is on both servers. I am running my .Net app pool under the domain user. I have also tried using windows impersonate in the web.config to run under the domain user. I have verified that the domain user has full control to the remote directory. In an effort to debug this I have also given the "everyone" full control to the remote directory. In an effort to debug this I have also added the domain user to the administrators group. I have a simple .net test page on the web server to test this. Through the test page I am able to read the directory on the file server and get a list of everything in it. I am not able to upload files or to create directories on the file server. Here's code that works: var path = @"\\fileserver\images\"; var di = new DirectoryInfo(path); foreach (var d in di.GetDirectories()) { Response.Write(d.Name); } Here's code that doesn't work: path = Path.Combine(path, "NewDirectory"); Directory.CreateDirectory(path); Here's the error I'm getting: Access to the path '\fileserver\images\NewDirectory' is denied.   I'm having some difficulties in prolog, I'm trying to write a predicate that will return all paths between two cities, although at the moment it returns the first path it finds on an infinite loop. Not sure where I'm going wrong but I've been trying to figure this out all day and I'm getting nowhere. • Dependency Injection: How to maintain multiple configurations?

  Hi StackOverflow, Lets assume we've build a system with a DI framework which is working quite fine. This system currently uses JMS to "talk" with other systems not maintained by us. The majority of our customers like the JMS approach and uses it according to our specification. The component which does all the messaging is injected with Spring into the rest of the application. Now we got the case that one customer cannot implement the JMS solution and want to use another messaging technology. Thats not a problem because we can simply implement a messaging service using this technology and inject it in the rest of the application. But how are we supposed to handle the deployment and maintenance of the configuration? Since the application uses Spring i could imagine to check in all the configurations i have for this application and the system administrator could start the application and passing the name of the DI XML file to specify which configuration should be loaded. But... it just don't feel right. Are there any solutions for such cases available? What are the best-practices you use? I could even imagine more complex scenarios which do not contain only one service substitution... Thanks a lot!

• Api/plugins for open source libraries?

  whenever i use a open source library eg. Doctrine i always ending up coding a class (so called Facade) to use the Doctrine library. so next time i want to create a user i just type: $fields = array('name' => 'peter', 'email' => '[email protected]'); Doctrine_Facade::create_entity($entity, $fields); then it creates an entity with the provided information. so i guess, all coders will create their own "Facade". i wonder how usual it is with open source Facades to download and interact with the open source libraries? is this rare cause i haven't seen any of these. in some frameworks i have seen them called plugins, eg. plugins for twitter api or facebook api. so whenever you download a library, should you search for plugins/facades on the net, or is it better to just try coding your own? i just thought it would be great for everyone not to reinvent the wheel. thanks.

• colorbox not displaying first caption from flickr gallery integration

  I am pulling small thumbnails into my page from the flickr API, and using Colorbox to display larger thumbnails and captions from the title attribute. Using the API with C#. However, on the first instance of opening colorbox it does not display the caption from the anchors title attribute. If you click next or previous then it appears. The actual caption is physically there in the source code, just not getting put into the colorbox window. Demo here, if you click on a thumbnail you will see there is no caption, click next then prev and it will appear.   Hi guys, I want to check our google postions for several keywords every day and make a note in a spreadseet. At the moment, we have a student doing it but it's a rubbish job and it doesn't seem fair on them! Are there any tools available to automate this process? I have tried rankchecker by seobook.com, but although that should be exactly what im looking for when i set scheduled tasks in that, it doesnt work. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks! peter EDIT: Liam has suggested a Python script to do this, which unfortunately isnt something I'm very familiar with! If anyone knows of a good tutorial or something to help us with this, that would be brilliant. Update: Found a php script at seoscript.net which looks like a step in the right direction.
