  • NetBeans does not install properly

    I'm trying to install NetBeans IDE on my Ubuntu 12.04. However no matter how many time i install/resintall it (from Software Center), it still gives this strange problem: After I complete the installation and try to launch it, Netbeans first displays the initialization window. After it completes, the window disappears and nothing happens. Then after a while Netbeans seemingly restarts and then again shows the initialization window. This goes on in an infinitesimal cycle and I'm ultimately forced to restart my computer and uninstall NetBeans. Why could this be happening? I really need NetBeans as it is a very good IDE.

  • Why do packages fail to install from command line

    Every once in a while I can't install packages in Ubuntu 11.04. I'll try to run the software center and it and it will pop up then disappear. If I call it from the command line it says it seg-faults. And then trying to install anything from the command line I get this: sudo apt-get install pdftk Reading package lists... Done And thats all I get for anything I try. Usually restarting fixes the problem but its very annoying.

  • C# .NET 4.0 interactive course?

    I would like to learn C# programming. I already studied it for several weeks and wrote some minor programs with VS2010, and I'm not completely newbie at programming because I worked on STALKER - Shadow of Chernobyl as scripter, but it was LUA. I want to become a real programmer. I think C# is a decent way to start with. I already learned about the most commonly used resource sites and got some nice eBooks as well, but unfortunately I don't have time to sit down in front my computer all the time, so my progress is pretty slow. I would like to ask that if someone can recommend me some decent interactive online courses to make my learning progress faster. I know about the "joe grip" course but I don't know if it's worth $39 also it's only for .NET 1.x and 2.0 while I'd like to learn 4.0 so I have no idea what should I do.

  • Web Safe Area (optimal resolution) for web app design?

    I'm in the process of designing a new web app and I'm wondering for what 'Web Safe Area' should I optimize the app layout and design. By Web Safe Area I mean the actual area available to display the website in the browser (which is influenced by monitor resolution as well as the space taken up by the browser and OS) I did some investigation and thinking on my own but wanted to share this to see what the general opinion is. Here is what I found: Optimal Display Resolution: w3schools web stats seems to be the most referenced source (however they state that these are results from their site and is biased towards tech savvy users) http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php (aggregate data from something like 15,000 different sites that use their tracking services) StatCounter Global Stats Display Resolution (Stats are based on aggregate data collected by StatCounter on a sample exceeding 15 billion pageviews per month collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites) NetMarketShare Screen Resolutions (marketshare.hitslink.com) (a web analytics consulting firm, they get data from browsers of site visitors to their on-demand network of live stats customers. The data is compiled from approximately 160 million visitors per month) Display Resolution Summary: There is a bit of variation between the above sources but in general as of Jan 2011 looks like 1024x768 is about 20%, while ~85% have a higher resolution of at least 1280x768 (1280x800 is the most common of these with 15-20% of total web, depending on the source; 1280x1024 and 1366x768 follow behind with 9-14% of the share). My guess would be that the higher resolution values will be even more common if we filter on North America, and even higher if we filter on N.American corporate users (unfortunately I couldn't find any free geographically filtered statistics). Another point to note is that the 1024x768 desktop user population is likely lower than the aforementioned 20%, seeing as the iPad (1024x768 native display) is likely propping up those number (the app I'm designing is flash based, Apple mobile devices don't support flash so iPad support isn't a concern). My recommendation would be to optimize around the 1280x768 constraint (*note: 1280x768 is actually a relatively rare resolution, but I think it's a valid constraint range considering that 1366x768 is relatively common and 1280 is the most common horizontal resolution). Browser + OS Constraints: To further add to the constraints we have to subtract the space taken up by the browser (assuming IE, which is the most space consuming) and the OS (assuming WinXP-Win7): Win7 has the biggest taskbar footprint at a height of 40px (XP's and Vista's is 30px) The default IE8 view uses up 25px at the bottom of the screen with the status bar and a further 120px at the top of the screen with the windows title bar and the browser UI (assuming the default 'favorites' toolbar is present, it would instead be 91px without the favorites toolbar). Assuming no scrollbar, we also loose a total of 4px horizontally for the window outline. This means that we are left with 583px of vertical space and 1276px of horizontal. In other words, a Web Safe Area of 1276 x 583 Is this a correct line of thinking? I'm really surprised that I couldn't find this type of investigation anywhere on the web. Lots of websites talk about designing for 1024x768, but that's only half the equation! There is no mention of browser/OS influences on the actual area you have to display the site/app. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. EDIT Another caveat to my line of thinking above is that different browsers actually take up different amounts of pixels based on the OS they're running on. For example, under WinXP IE8 takes up 142px on top of the screen (instead the aforementioned 120px for Win7) because the file menu shows up by default on XP while in Win7 the file menu is hidden by default. So it looks like on WinXP + IE8 the Web Safe Area would be a mere 572px (768px-142-30-24=572)

  • Should I force users to update an application?

    I'm writing an application for a medium sized company that will be used by about 90% of our employees and our clients. In planning for the future we decided to add functionality that will verify that the version of the program that is running is a version that we still support. Currently the application will forcequit if the version is not among our supported versions. Here is my concern. Hypothetically, in version 2.0.0.1 method "A" crashes and burns in glorious fashion and method "B" works just fine. We release 2.0.0.2 to fix method A and deprecate version 0.1. Now if someone is running 0.1 to use method B they will be forced to update to fix something that isn't an issue for them right now. My question is, will the time saved not troubleshooting old, unsupported versions outweigh the cost in usability?

  • How come ASUS sells Ubuntu installed 1225Cs, when we dont have drivers for gma3600?

    I recently purchased a ASUS 1225C cedar trail netbook. It didn't come preinstalled with Ubuntu like it comes in some markets. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on it. While Ubuntu works just fine, I am bothered by the lack of proper graphics support because of intel gma 3600. I am aware that this is not a problem of Ubuntu. My question is this: How does ASUS manage to sell these netbooks in other markets with Ubuntu preinstalled? How does ASUS manage to get everything to work? And if they can, why aren't I able to do the same? link: For more on Asus 1225C As you can see, they show Ubuntu working perfectly in the screenshots. Is this false advertising?

  • Should I pay my developers for bugs fixes for a project or work that's still in progress?

    We are working with a group of developers on a project. The project is still in progress (not completed) and these developers charge us for time spent on fixing bugs on codes that were not written valid in the first place. I understand that we should pay for changes/new requests if any, but not bugs fixes for a work in progress. We also understand that once the assignment is being deployed to the live site, we may be liable for bugs fixes that may arise after a support period is being exhausted. The question now is, is it appropriate for such charges to be levied upon us while the project is still in progress?

  • sudo apt-get update does not work for 12.10

  • Using pkexec policy to run out of /opt/

    I still try to make it possible to run my app with root priveleges. Therefore I created two policies to run the application via pkexec (one for /usr/bin and one for /opt/extras... ) and added them to the setup.py: data_files=[('/usr/share/polkit-1/actions', ['data/com.ubuntu.pkexec.armorforge.policy']), ('/usr/share/polkit-1/actions', ['data/com.ubuntu.extras.pkexec.armorforge.policy']), ('/usr/bin/', ['data/armorforge-pkexec'])] ) additionally I added a startscript which uses pkexec for starting the application. It distinguishes between the two places and is used in the Exec-Statement of the desktopfile: #!/bin/sh if [ -f /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/armorforge/bin/armorforge ]; then pkexec "/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/armorforge/bin/armorforge" "$@" else pkexec `which armorforge` "$@" fi If I simply do a quickly package everything will work right. But if I package with extras option: quickly package --extras the Exec-statement will be exchanged. Even if I try to simulate the pkexec call via armorforge-pkexec It will aks for a password and then returns this: andre@andre-desktop:~/Entwicklung/Ubuntu/armorforge$ armorforge-pkexec (armorforge:10108): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.desktop.interface' is not installed Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) So ok, I could not trick the opt-thing. How can I make sure, that my Application will run with root priveleges out of opt. I copied the way of using pkexec from synaptic. My application is for communicating with apparmor which currently has no dbus interface. Else I need to write into /etc/apparmor.d-folder. How should I deal with the opt-build which, as far as I understand, is required to submit my application to the ubuntu software center. Thanks for any hints and/or links :-)

We use this mobile broadband when there is no wifi connection. There are two kinds of mobile broadband, one is postpaid account and the other is prepaid account. I use prepaid account, this kind of account can load a money for transaction like data plans, from 10 pesos for 30 minutes internet connection or 200 pesos for 5 days internet connection., and this prepaid account can load 5 pesos up to thousands of pesos. Now, if this prepaid mobile broadband can provide money in pesos and has internet connection, I think it can also use it for buying goods or applications or games via internet. i think its only need a software that can detect the sim card number and the money balance for transactions.   • Customer Spotlight - CSX: Charles Pack

    A couple of weeks ago, I had the distinct privilege of facilitating a training session with CSX.  CSX is a wonderful customer.  They've been a dedicated Oracle customer for many years. They have quite an extensive Oracle footprint including Server Technologies, Fusion Middleware and E-Business Suite products.  They also utilize Oracle's Solution Support Center offering from Advanced Customer Services, for their Database products. I'm always on the lookout for Oracle gems and I discovered one at CSX. Before my session began, I met with Charles Pack.  In my view, he's an Oracle guru.  Don't take my word for it, just read any of the books he's authored or co-authored and the one soon to be released.  Just looking at his bookshelf, I saw titles going back to Oracle 7 & 8, as well as a Solaris 2.x book.  Remember those?   Anyway, Charles is a technologist and a manager (and wears numerous other hats too).  I had a wonderful time talking with Charles and getting to know him.  What do you consider keys to your personal success?  Inability to quit.  When I decide that I will accomplish something, I will, regardless of the nature of the challenge.  Never quitting means a perpetual drive for change and progress and setting examples for others to follow.  The reason I write OCP books is because I can provide a path for people to improve their knowledge of the product, gain a certification, and reach their professional goals. What do you consider the most important part of your job?  Negotiations.  We all have competing goals, incentives and finite resources, but we should all have the same common goal – progress.  So finding the way for all parties to progress is the most important thing we do. What is the most important part of your relationship with Oracle?  Oracle provides solutions – not just products - that are critical to our business success.  So continuous communication regarding education, services, product roadmaps and shared goals is the most important part of our ongoing relationship. I would like to make the first tab ("Welcome") similar to Google search engine, with the search box centered in the pane. The setAlign(Alignment.CENTER) method doesn't for this type of object.   • How to center text around point using xaml

    I would like to be able to place the word "hello" centered on a specific point. I need to do this completely in XAML without extra code. Best I can tell, all the text alignment properties/styles in XAML act on text within some bouding canvas or other element. Since I don't know the length of the text I want to center, I can't center it using my own code. The reason I need to solve the problem entirely in XAML is that I'm not using WPF to create the XAML, I'm writing it directly to an XML DOM. It will then be loaded into a Silverlight or WPF control for display. In most graphic languages, including SVG, which is where my code originated, text can be aligned against a "stationary point" without a bounding box. Any suggestions appreciated
