• Can I mix drive types in an HP server?

  I currently have the following setup: HP DL380 G4 Server 6 x 73GB, Ultra160, 10k, SCSI 80 Pin Drives Smart Array 6i Controller RAID 5 One of the drives is failing and needs to be replaced. I have on hand drives that are the same size and type, but are Ultra320, 15k instead. I have verified that these drives work in another system with the same type of drive controller. When I plug one of these in the system simply reports the drive as being offline and has nothing further to do with it. From what I have read these drives should be compatable. Should this work at all and if so, what might be preventing it?

• Fixed or consistent mount location for a USB hard drive

  I store my music on an external hard drive, and play them with foobar2k. However, the drive letter changes, which usually means I need to rebuild a fairly large playlist every so often. I'm wondering if there's a way to reserve a drive letter for a specific external device (or type of device) by device ID or volume name, or if I'm better off using a NTFS mount point, and re-mounting the drive to a folder each time. I'm using either a Windows XP or 7 system, and the external drive is NTFS.

• New 2.5" hard drive for laptop - What to compare?

  I'm having trouble finding a new (bigger) hard drive for my laptop. I came across some criteria that I never thought about before, while I was checking a price comparison site. Of course, that made me more confused. First of all, I will probably go with something above 250 GB, and at least 16 MB cache. Now the confusing part: Most new drives are 7200 RPM, as opposed to good old 5400 RPM. 7200 RPM used to mean extra heat, but suddenly it's almost impossible to find a 5400 RPM in 2.5". What did I miss? Second question: Internal data transfer rate. My old drive has a rate of around 60 MB, but new drives have values like 100 MB or more (e.g. 150 MB). How important is this "internal data transfer rate"?

• Add physical disk to KVM virtual machine

  I'm setting up a file server (nas4free) as a KVM virtual machine on a Ubuntu Server 12.04 system. How do I add physical hard drives directly to the VM so they can be used by the guest (nas4free), but not the host? Specifically the hard drive I'd like to mount is /dev/sda (which is not currently mounted on the server.) So far I've found two solutions but I haven't gotten either to work. The first is from Server Fault where it's suggested to use virt-manager. I haven't gotent this to work because when I try to select an existing drive nothing is being listed. My best guess as to why this is, is because I'm using virt-manager over ssh and not connecting as root, should that make a difference? The second solution I've found here is to just run the command (modified for my system) qm set nas4free -virtio /dev/sda but that seems to require proxmox which I don't have installed and doesn't seem to be in the default repositories? Finally, once the above is sorted out and I can mount the drive directly to the VM, does anyone have an experience with whether the drive should be mounted to the VM as scsi, ide, or virtio? (I know virtio was recommend in the linked ServerFault page, but I hadn't heard of it before now since I mainly use VMWare). Thanks for your help!!!

• Mod Rewrite - directing HTTP/HTTPS traffic to the appropriate virtual hosts

  I have an Apache2 web server (v. 2.2.16) running on Debian hosting three virtual hosts. The first two hosts are HTTP only (server1 and server2). The last host is HTTPS only (server3). My virtual host configuration files can be found at pastebin. I would like to use mod rewrite to get the following behavior: Any request for http://server3 is re-directed to https://server3 Any request for either https://server1 or https://server2 is re-directed to http://server1 or http://server2 as appropriate. Currently, requesting http://server3 gives you a 403 because indexing is disabled for that host and a request for https://server1 or https://server2 will resolve as https://server3 (as its the only virtual host running SSL). This behavior is not desirable. So far I have added a rewrite rule to the central configuration file (myServerWideConfs.conf), with unfortunately no effect. I was under the impression that this rule (or something similar) should rewrite all https:// requests for server1 and server2 to the proper http:// request. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^server3 [NC] RewriteRule (.*) http://%{HTTP_HOST} My question is two-fold: What mod rewrite rules should I use to accomplish this? And where should they go? Debian's packaging of Apache has a pretty granular (i.e., fractured) configuration file layout; should my rewrite rules go in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf, /etc/apache2/conf.d/myServerWideConfs.conf, or the individual virtual host files? Is mod rewrite the right tool to accomplish this or am I missing something in my greater apache configuration?

• Windows Azure Virtual Machines - Make Sure You Follow the Documentation

  To create a Windows Azure Infrastructure-as-a-Service Virtual Machine you have several options. You can simply select an image from a “Gallery” which includes Windows or Linux operating systems, or even a Windows Server with pre-installed software like SQL Server. One of the advantages to Windows Azure Virtual Machines is that it is stored in a standard Hyper-V format – with the base hard-disk as a VHD. That means you can move a Virtual Machine from on-premises to Windows Azure, and then move it back again. You can even use a simple series of PowerShell scripts to do the move, or automate it with other methods. And this then leads to another very interesting option for deploying systems: you can create a server VHD, configure it with the software you want, and then run the “SYSPREP” process on it. SYSPREP is a Windows utility that essentially strips the identity from a system, and when you re-start that system it asks a few details on what you want to call it and so on. By doing this, you can essentially create your own gallery of systems, either for testing, development servers, demo systems and more. Whenever you deploy a system to Windows Azure Virtual Machines, you must meet certain password complexity requirements. However, when you build the machine locally and SYSPREP it, you might not choose a strong password for the account you use to Remote Desktop to the machine. In that case, you might not be able to reach the system after you deploy it. Once again, the key here is reading through the instructions before you start. • Swap drive not operating correctly

  At first, I started seeing the warning signs. The halting pages. The molasses speed of the windows closing. The pictures not rendering. Then, I took action. Recently I added a swap drive to my computer. For a while, everything was good. Unicorns frolicked among the new bits and bytes resplendent on the shiny metal platter known as my swap drive. Today, I opened Chromium, and got on the 7th tab (start.csail.mit.edu) "He's dead, Jim!". This used to happen before I added my swap drive, but now I thought that it wouldn't happen because I added more memory. I fear for the safety of the unicorns. Please help me make my swap drive work again. • Need help with exploring a USB drive

  When I plug in a USB drive, I see it on the left hand edge of the Unity desktop (11.10, 64 bit) but when I try to explore it, VLC starts and tries to play whatever it can find in the USB drive. This behavior began when I updated from 11.04 to 11.10. I literally cannot look into the contents of any of the USB drives I have, because I cannot stop VLC, nor can I do anything when I click Open other than watch VLC start up. This is very frustrating because it makes my USB sticks essentially useless. HELP! I'm sure that there is something a wizard could do about this, but I am not a wizard, and I am at my wits ends. Trying to get to the System Settings menu works, and I can see the setup for "Removable" devices, and they are all set to "Ask" but that is clearly not what is happening. So it looks like I must reach for the command line, but where do I go to find the settings for what the desktop does when I plug in a USB drive and wish to explore the file structure in it and possible copy a file into the USB or from the USB drive. Right now, VLC media player is always getting in my way. :-(

• Discs in DVD Drive not being read

  Does anyone have an experience with Ubuntu that is no longer reading discs in the DVD drive? This is my first time Ubuntu does not see the disc :| The disc is fine and works on my other Ubuntu computers. The drive is there and powered. I can even type in eject in a terminal and the drive will open. Using the command: sudo lshw -C disk I am able to see info about my drive too. Actually BOTH of my internal DVD drives cannot read discs anymore. • Compiling GCC or Clang for thumb drive on OSX

  I have a mac book that I don't have admin rights to which I would like to be able to use either GCC or clang. Since I lack admin right I can't install binutils or a compiler to /usr directory. My plan is to install both of these (using an old macbook that I do have admin rights for) to a flash drive and then run the compiler off of there. How would one go building gcc or clang so that it could run just off of a thumb drive? I've tried both but haven't had any success. I've tried doing it defining as many of the directories as possible through configure, but haven't been able to successfully build. • Virtual Networks in Oracle Solaris - Part 5

             A         long         time      ago in a    blogosphere   far, far away... I wrote four blog entries to describe the new network virtualization features that were in Solaris 11 Express: Part 1 introduced the concept of network virtualization and listed the basic virtual network elements. Part 2 expanded on the concepts and discussed the resource management features. Part 3 demonstrated the creation of some of these virtual network elements. Part 4 demonstrated the network resource controls. I had planned a final entry that added virtual routers to the list of virtual network elements, but Jeff McMeekin wrote a paper that discuses the same features. That paper is available at OTN. And this Jeff can't write any better than that Jeff... All of the features described in those blog entries and that paper are also available in Solaris 11. It is possible that some details have changed, but the vast majority of the content is unchanged.

• Media Drive Permissions

  I just switched from a Hackintosh to Linux, and am trying to make sense of it. On my hackintosh, I partitioned a big drive into 3 parts--1 which holds music, 1 for film/tv, and one for the OS. I installed Ubuntu onto the OS partition, and am now trying to make it so I can write to the media drives. I've searched around and tried several things. I tried gksu nautilus in Terminal, which brought me into root permissions. When I select a folder and try to change permissions, I get "The owner could not be changed...Error setting owner: Read-only file system" Ultimately, I have two specific aims: - I want to make it so I can write to the film/tv drive from the ubuntu machine only - I want to make it so I can write to the music drive from the ubuntu machine, or any other machine on the network (all Macs). That is, I want a single music library (an iTunes file) that will serve all Mac laptops/iPads/iPhones on the network, but which XBMC on the Ubuntu machine can also see / read from. Music will be added to the iTunes library via a single Mac laptop, but all other devices should be able to see the music drive.

It looks like every relative link to resources are not accepted by the server: Screenshot 2 For example, the CSS isn't loaded. When I open the source and click on the link, it opens the CSS file in the browser without errors. But when I run FireBug while loading the webpage, it seems that the CSS file isn't retrieved. • external hard drive not detected after ubuntu crash [restarting machine]

  today i tried to watch movie [with vlc media player] from my external hard drive [expansion portable 500 GB], and it's play good, then pause the movie and play it again, and my Ubuntu crashed!   I have been using VMWare on Windows for a long time. But after a long wait, I moved to VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.10. I installed Ubuntu, 32 Bit, installed all available updates and installed Virtual Box. When I try to create a new Windows installation inside VirtualBox, I got the following error messages. 1st error dialogue VirtualBox - Error Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP.<br> The virtual machine '**Windows XP**' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.<p> Details<p> Result Code: <br> NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)<br> Component: <br> Machine<br> Interface: <br> IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}<p> 2nd error dialogue **Virtualbox - Error in suplibOsinit**<br> **Kernal driver not installed (rc--1908)**<br> Please install the virtualbox-dkmbs package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root.<p> Steps I tried I have already tried reinstalling VirtualBox. Google result seem to indicate the the problem happens due to Kernel updates. Is there anyway I can get this working? I need this for malware analysis and if VirtualBox is going to crash on me all the time, then I won't be able to use Ubuntu for work. • Installing 11.10 on flash drive failed

  This is my problem. I burned Ubuntu 11.10 iso to a CD. I was able to boot my PC with it. I plugged in my flash drive, and inserted the CD and restarted the computer to boot Ubuntu. I then chose to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows (XP prof.). Then I was able to select my flash drive as the installation location. I prepared partitons by dragging a bar and allocating the size for the Ubuntu installation, and for other files. I set 3GB for ubuntu and 1GB for other files. The pen drive was partitioned and files installed on it. After sucess I ejected the CD to restart the PC to use the new OS. When it restarted I expected to be asked to select an OS to boot. But I could only boot with Windows XP. Properties of my flash drive show its total capacity is 1GB. The partitioned 3GB is missing. How can I boot with the USB stick? How can I get my 4GB USB stick back?

• Not able to access external Hard disk

  I have a 1TB External Hard drive which I'm currently not able to access. When I open the External drive in Finder, It shows it's empty. When I use the option to "Get Info", I get the dialog box stating it has about 300GB Free. Tried to get into the External Drive using Terminal, I had no luck. Checking in Disk Utility, It showed that I have many number of files but ZERO folder. I tried to "repair disk", in the process the external Drive got unmounted in between the process. I checked this drive on Windows. I was able to open almost all the folders but I wasn't able to copy anything onto the external drive. One folder caused my windows computer to hang, So i connected the drive back onto my MacBook Pro and tried to access the drive through terminal (this time it worked!) and then I tried to delete the folder with rm command, I got an "input/output error" What should i do to recover the files in that folder? How can i access my external drive on my mac

• How can I remove all drivers and other files related to a USB Mass Storage device?

  I have a flash drive here that does not work on one OS on computer - let's call it the desktop Windows 7. It works fine on another computer - laptop Windows 7. It also works fine on Windows 8 on the same desktop computer. Other flash drives work fine under desktop Windows 7. So not a hardware issue, not a generic USB Mass Storage driver issue. It's something specific to this drive. On desktop Windows 7, I can connect the drive but no volume comes up under Windows Explorer. Ditto for Disk Management. With diskpart, loading hangs until I unplug the drive, if I replug it and try list disk it hangs again. If I unplug the drive at this point, list disk prints out all attached drives - including the just removed flash drive. The drive consistently appears under Device Manager, but uninstalling the drivers, restarting and reinstalling the drivers (by inserting the drive) only works for the first insertion. After that it fails again. I get the feeling that the driver files are not actually removed, and are corrupted, meaning every reinstall it's the same corrupted drivers being installed. Is there any way to remove these drivers completely? Or perhaps some other setting Windows 7 retains? Formatting the drive through another computer/OS does not help. I've also tried a complete wipe and rebuild of the MBR and single partition. The allocation unit size makes no difference; neither does a NTFS format. This is a relatively small matter, and I would not like to reinstall the entire OS!

• How can I change the file name of the Program Files (x86) folder?

  Let me stop you before the "you shouldn't do that" and "you will corrupt your file paths". I know what I'm doing, but I'll give you the story to convince you. Basically, my hard drive is failing to the point where programs installed on it are not responding consistently. So, in preparation for my replacement, I'm moving as many files as possible to my secondary because the new drive will be smaller (it's an emergency I can't buy a fancy expensive new drive) and so I can actually use my computer until the new drive comes in. The basic idea behind what I'm doing is I've copied the contents of the Program Files x86 folder to another spot on my other drive, and I want to replace the original folder in the C drive with a symbolic link that points to the other drive, so the programs can run from that drive and be fine but it will save space on my C drive and simplify the moving process when the new one comes in. To do that, I need to rename the program files folder, make the symbolic link, hopefully delete the program files folder, then restart my computer so all the programs are running properly and I can confirm it works. Now that I've told you why, can anyone help me out?
