  • What to use to make voice chat (and some more) on a web?

    - by Tunococ
I am trying to make available on my website a voice chat for a small group of people that allows some other means to interact such as text messaging, photo sharing, file sharing, simple drawing and silly games. In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. Low-level programming is fine if required, but platform dependency isn't that much preferred.

  • Is an 'if password == XXXXXXX' enough for minimum security?

    - by Prof Plum
If I create a login for an app that has middle to low security risk (in other words, its not a banking app or anything), is it acceptable for me to verify a password entered by the user by just saying something like: if(enteredPassword == verifiedPassword) SendToRestrictedArea(); else DisplayPasswordUnknownMessage(); It seems to easy to be effective, but I certainly would not mind if that was all that was required. Is a simple check on username/password combo enough? Update: The particular project happens to be a web service, the verification is entirely server side, and it is not open-source. Does the domain change how you would deal with this?

  • ASP.NET MVC and Me in PragPub Magazine

The June issue (also in pdf) of the online PragPub magazine, published by the Pragmatic Bookshelf has two articles on ASP.NET MVC. The first is called Agile Microsoft and is an introduction to ASP.NET MVC geared towards those whove never seen it. Its nice seeing ASP.NET MVC featured in this magazine which in its own words tends to cater to a non-Microsoft crowd. To some developers, Microsofts technologies are a given, the river they swim in. To others, not using Microsofts tools is the default....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Make your Silverlight applications Speak to you with Microsoft Translator

One of the announcements that happened during the MIX10 conference was the availability of the V2 of the Microsoft Translator API. This is the engine that powers the translation behind http://www.windowslivetranslator.com and some other Bing-related properties as well. A lot of research has gone into the engine from Microsoft Research and others. Language translation isnt an easy task especially taking into consideration cultural significance of words, etc. I have heard that the most challenging...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

    - by aksarben
My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

  • Battery Power when running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in dual boot

    - by Amro A.
This is only a general question in order for me to get a better idea of my dual boot (windows 8 & Ubuntu) systems. I noticed that every time I run Ubuntu (which is becoming more often) the battery power gets consumed really fast. I am not performing any special tasks at the moment, just getting to know the system, for example, sound settings, watching videos, surfing the net and so on. When I do the same thing in Windows 8 the battery lives a considerable amount of time longer. Is this something to do with Ubuntu or is it because of the dual boot that I have going on? In other words, if I start running Ubuntu all by itself on my laptop, will it be more power consuming than Windows 8?

  • Can Google Translate's audio files be used in a game?

    - by ashes999
For my game, I need text-to-speech. Since it's Android, I decided to settle for MP3s, since the range of words spoken is few. For my prototype, I'm using Google Translate to generate the audio since it has awesome pronounciation across multiple languages. But can I use it in production? What if I sell my game for $1 on the app store? All I can find on SE is that the API may be LGPL, and that the licensing page mentions the API is only available for academic research -- nothing more. My usage is a bit different; I'm actually capturing the audio bits and using those instead. I'm curious to know the license for this; I can't find anything with my Google-fu.

  • Javascript slider with fade

    - by tarmes
I've been scouring the web for a slider that offers a particular effect, but I can't find one. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help out... Specifically, I need a slider that will slide left and right through a series of HTML DIVs. However, I also need the old slide to fade out as it slides. This is because I don't what to have a visible frame around the the slider, so I don't want the old slide to be cropped against an invisible edge. It's hard to explain in words, so here's a graphic. In each case the green slide is entering the view, the red one is existing. Is possible, I'd like the slide to use CSS3 transitions where available for the smoothest possible effect. Has only ever come across such a beast?

  • Ghosting Program for Ubuntu 12.10

    - by Sean Webber
I am looking to figure out how to set up a mass backup system for a computer network (of about 25) and am looking for a ghosting program that makes an image of the entire system for backup/recovery purposes. While clonezilla would work.. you have to manually boot us the CD for it. I am looking for a program that runs INSIDE Ubuntu that sends a system image backup off to the network server at set times, then when needed could also be used to burn the clone back to the machine. Another words- automatically and the only time I have to do anything to it is when I need to burn a backup BACK to a 'crapped' machine. Any ideas?

  • How to handle "porting" software that's still in development

    - by BAM
My company is building an iOS version of an Android app that our client is developing (but has not yet released). We have access to the latest builds and source, however since the software is frequently re-structured and refactored, we're doing a lot of unnecessary re-work. In addition, the due date on the contract will likely be passed before the client's application is even ready for release. In other words, we're supposed to build the iOS version before the original Android version is even complete. Luckily the client tossed out the original deadline, but now we may have to renegotiate pricing... never a fun situation. Are we handling this incorrectly? How are "ports" (especially between mobile platforms) normally done? Is there a correct way to pipeline development for multiple platforms without so much re-work? Thanks in advance! :)

  • Google analytics not provided for 55% of total traffic

    - by Neolisk
I've been here and here to learn what (not provided) means. Now the question is if what I am seeing in my Google Analytics stats for my website is considered normal (and whether I can/should do anything about it). Here are the statistics from one day, but other days are similar: 102 visits, 57 is from (not provided), that's over 55% of unknown keywords. Is it normal to have it like that? Does google plan to do anything about it? In other words, what's the perspective? In my understanding, with this approach, as people switch to https, Analytics will stop being useful. Please correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions.

  • How is your working time distributed between coding and thinking?

    - by mojuba
...in percentage. For example 60/40 or 90/10 or 100/0. My hypothesis is that the bigger the proportion of time you spend thinking the smaller your code can be as a result (and the less time will be needed to write it down). Think more, write less, in other words. Do you think it is true? As a side note, I think in typical software companies thinking is not part of the culture anyway: you are usually supposed to be sitting there at your computer typing something. You will almost definitely be noticed by your managers if you wander about with a blank look thinking over your next steps with your code. Too bad.

  • Specifying force and angle in ApplyImpulse in box2d

    - by Deepak Mahalingam
I need to apply an impulse on a object with a particular force and at a particular angle in Box2d. If I am right the syntax would be the following: body.GetBody().ApplyImpulse(new b2Vec2(direction, power),body.GetBody().GetWorldCenter()); The problem is my direction is in angles. I found a discussion where it was said that the way we can convert an angle into a vector would be as: new b2Vec2(Math.cos(angle*Math.PI/180),Math.sin(angle*Math.PI/180)); Now I am not sure how to combine these two. In other words, if I wish to apply a force of 30 units at an angle of 30 degrees at the center of the object, how should I do it?

  • Templates and Cross-domain client-side binding with RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX

Or yet another Twitter grid Yesterday, while I was playing around with this example of our MVC Grid, I thought that the RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX deserves one too. What I like about this sample scenario is that it gives a perfect opportunity to demonstrate both how to do client cross-site request (as we have received a few questions through our support channels) and to check the future ASP.NET AJAX/jQuery client-side templates prototype.     A wiser guy once said a code sample is worth more than a 1000 words ;) That is why Ill keep it short and let you check the sample project.   Enjoy.Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to configure simple game AI setting with jtable

    - by Asgard

  • SharePoint 2010 - Drives are running out of free space.

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information You might have seen the following dreadful message - As this post on blogs.msdn.com details out, this is due to a health analyzer rule configured in SharePoint. While that blogpost does a great job explaining why this monitoring is necessary, how you can tweak it, it still becomes a nuisance on SharePoint virtual machines used for development. It also becomes a nuisance on production environments because SharePoint databases are set to auto grow. In other words, as the database is being used, it only grows, and grows, and GROWS! Seriously, how many of you have put in work to compact the database on a regular basis? Those of you who answered no, you’re sitting on  a time bomb. Shame on you!   Read full article ....

  • Verb+Noun Parsers and Old School Visual Novels [duplicate]

    - by user38943
This question already has an answer here: How should I parse user input in a text adventure game? 6 answers Hi I'm working on a simple old school visual novel engine in Lua. Basically I have most of the code set up besides one important feature. The Text Parser. Lets get into how words are generally structured. In the screenshot I input the command "my wish is for you to die" --How would a human understand this? my = noun/object wish = verb is = connective_equator similar to = for = connective_object (for all objects of ..) you = noun/object to = connective_action similar to do die = verb --the computer can then parse this and understand it like this (pseudo example) my = user you = get_current_label() you = "Lost Coatl" wish = user_command user_command = for all_objects of "Lost Coatl" do die() end execute user_command() What other ways do videogames use text parsers, what would be the simplest way for a newbie coder such as myself?

  • Google showing meta descriptions from other pages in the SERPs

    - by ojek
Recently I added some content to my website and submitted a sitemap files to Google. Now that Google has indexed those pages, I discovered that some of words and sentences that are listed in Google that lead to my website are having their meta descriptions somehow mixed up. Here is how it works: After I put a sentence on Google to check for my website ranking, I can see a page title in the results of page1, a link to page1, and a description from page2. Since my website is a forum, if Google mixes the links of threads, it leads my users to different kind of material that they were looking for. Is there anything I can do about it?

  • Good interview programming projects

    - by bigtang
I'm looking for some small programming projects that I can give potential employees to gauge their programming abilities. These will be programmers straight out of college. I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. One example would be to take this paragraph of text and return a list of alphabetized unique words. After each word tell me how many times the word appeared and in what sentance(s) the word appreared in. Anyone have any good suggestions?

  • Whats New in RadMap for Silverlight / WPF in Q1 2010

Now that the Q1 2010 release has passed I would like to bring to your attention the official release of one of our newest controls - RadMap for Silverlight [and WPF]. Most of you who are actively involved into the business of data visualization solutions probably are aware that with the Q3 2009 release last year we released a public beta (CTP) version of our map control and it naturally evolved into a fully-fledged control for our current official release. First of all – a BIG thanks to all of you early adopters, who gave the control a try and shared constructive feedback (and also lots of kind words ;)) with us and helped this to happen. So in the good tradition of my original overview of the CTP version of RadMap, I would like to highlight some of the most exciting new features that you might have missed in ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

    - by user4394
I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? Thanks in advance and I'd be happy to answer any questions I can (without giving away my site of course).

  • How to tackle archived who-is personal data with opt-out?

    - by defaye
As far as I understand it, it is possible to opt-out (in the UK at least) of having your address details displayed on who-is information of a domain for non-trading individuals. What I want to know is, after opt-out, how do individuals combat archived data? Is there any enforcement of this? How many who-is websites are there which archive data and what rights do we have to force them to remove that data without paying absurd fees? In the case of capitulating to these scoundrels, what point is it in paying for the removal of archived data if that data can presumably resurface on another who-is repository? In other words, what strategy is one supposed to take, besides being wiser after the fact?
