  • What is the best file system to use for a second hard drive when dual booting between WinXP and Win7

    I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

  • Can't use a network CD-ROM

    Hi, there! I have a computer with Windows XP and I'm trying to use my local network to use the CD-ROM of my notebook with Windows 7. In windows XP computer with VLC I can open the menu of the DVD but after choose the option for the first chapter the movie window shuts down (but the VLC stays open). With BS-Player when trying to start the first chapter it freezes... Is this possible to fix? Thanks in advance!

    Hi i have installed windows 7 on my 2 year old ASUS EEE PC 1000HD. The default Operating system it came with was windows xp. Now the system is working fine but there are some display problems which i am going to state now: Firstly, during booting windows 7 logo is missing. There are no options for resolution changes. The only option possible is 800x600. The boot time is quite long when compared to xp. The graphics driver used in this system is STANDARD VGA GRAPHICS ADAPTER. The processor is intel celeron with 1GB RAM. I think with these requirements it is possible to get windows 7 with finer resolution. But why these problems are occurring?I even tried to install graphics driver provided by intel for this system. But i ve got the error message "this system doesn't meet the necessary requirements". So how to overcome this problem??

  • Is there any way to make an external monitor the primary under Boot Camp?

    This may be a general problem for all Windows XP portables, I don't know, I don't have a dedicated Windows portable. I'm running a MacBookPro Unibody (so it's using the Nvidia 9600M chip under Windows XP SP2). Is there any way to get my external monitor to be the "main"? Even when I use the Nvidia Control Panel to move the task bar to my external monitor, games still refuse to run on anything other than the internal monitor. (In full screen mode, of course, if it's in a window, I can drag it to the other screen, no problem) I know I'm missing something elementary here.

  • Outlook 2007 Does Not Accept Login Credentials, OWA Webmail Does. Troubleshooting Advice?

    I am trying to connect Outlook 2007 to Exchange (Hosted Exchange from Rackspace). Soon, I will need to roll this out for our entire office. With the Exchange account added to Outlook, Outlook starts up and asks for the user's username and password. Unfortunately, it doesn't like the password I use for it. I can confirm this username (email address) and password combo works by using Outlook WebMail, and another user (in another network/office) confirmed the Exchange account does work within his Outlook client. In my network/office, I can confirm that an Outlook 2007 client (under Windows 7) can connect to the Hosted Exchange server from Rackspace. However, I have not been able to get Outlook 2007 (under Windows XP SP3) to connect to the very same Exchange server Outlook 2007 (under Windows 7) can connect to. Outlook continuously prompts me for the username and password and does not accept the correct combination. Now, regarding the Outlook client that cannot connect/login to Exchange: The user has full admin rights on the workstation We do not run a domain controller/LDAP The firewall on the workstation has been disabled Real time file scanning in Microsoft Security Essentials has been disabled There are no virus scanning applications that would interface with Outlook or an email server. The Exchange account is setup to run on a newly created Outlook profile The network firewall does not log any blocked attempts A packet capture at the router reveals communication between the workstation and the Exchange server or proxy (though, this is SSL encrypted, so I don't know what the computers are saying) I have applied a fix (Added DWORD value of 0 for DefConnectOpts under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC) that was recommended to make RPC function when the workstation does not have a default gateway set. Workstation is configured as DHCP. This fix did nothing, and it may be worth noting the RPC subkey was not present until I added it. RPC service is running on the workstation The program is not running under any compatibility mode. Side note: Outlook 2007 installs with compatibility mode for XP enabled by default in windows 7. Outlook 2007 will not even try to connect to exchange if this compatibility mode is checked. In windows xp, I tried checking compatibility mode for windows 2000, and was unable to connect to exchange as well. Here is the specific configuration I've used in a blank outlook profile: Microsoft Exchange Server: ##MASKED##-MBX-C18.mex07a.mlsrvr.com Username: (Full Email Address: [email protected]) Password: ##MASKED## Outlook Anywhere: Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP Exchange Proxy Settings: Proxy Server: mex07a.emailsrvr.com Check "Connect using SSL only" Under "Only connect to proxy servers...", enter: msstd:mex07a.emailsrvr.com Check "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP" Check "On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP" Proxy authentication settings: Basic Authentication Notes: mex07a.mlsrvr.com and mex07a.emailsrvr.com may look incorrect at first glance, but this is not a typo - these instructions were handed down from rackspace and are confirmed to be working, just not on this workstation. I have tried to use the RpcPing utility but must have been using it wrong. I got as far as "Bad Interface Descriptor". It would seem to me getting Outlook and Exchange to work together would be a breeze, especially since everything is done over port 80 with web services. Unfortunately, the user is stuck with WebMail access only, because Outlook won't accept the Exchange credentials. Do you have any ideas of other things I could try to debug this issue further?     I'm displaying a PNG with a transparent background that looks good in Windows 7, but then I run my app in XP Mode or remote desktop to a Windows XP machine and the PNG looks incorrect. I noticed that if I disable "Integration Mode" or run the app on XP without remote desktop, the image looks fine. How do I get DrawImage to render the PNG correctly in XP Mode or remote desktop?   • Win7 to Win7 Remote Desktop Not working, Xp to 7 working fine

    Hello, I have a small home network and recently i tried to enable remote desktop for one of the pc's. I have a mix of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Xp runing alongside ubuntu, centos and others (some virtual, some real). I have a few Windows 7 pc`s that can be connected to using remote desktop from inside and outside the network (port redirects on routers, etc, etc) and some Xp ones. The trouble is when i tried to do the same thing to a Win7 laptop i discovered i can't connect to it from another win7 pc inside the home network. To sum it up Working: xp -- win7 not working: win7 -- win7 What i tried - disable and enable remote desktop (my computer - remote settings) - removing and adding users to the remote settings window - adding a new user to the machine, administrator or 'normal' user - checking the firewall settings on the machine and set 'allow' to remote desktop for both 'home/work' and 'public'networks Any tips on what should i do next? It displays ' .. secure connection' and after that the window with 'Your security credentials did not work' and it lets me try again with another user/password..

  • Windows 7 safe mode pretends it's Windows XP?

    Just a question in between. A friend of mine brought me a laptop that does not work anymore and wanted me to check whether I can do something. She told me it's Windows 7, and startup screen and login screen look like it. However, as she gets a bluescreen on startup it is only possible to boot in safe mode where the system pretends to be Windows XP SP3. The system also may have 1 GB of RAM but the system itself states that it has 954 MB of RAM which is a value I've never seen before. Is everything corrupt from operating system to hardware, or am I just a newbie that does not know that Windows 7 pretends to be Windows XP SP3 in safe mode? Or is this laptop just the victim of an illegal, crazy copy of Windows XP sold as Windows 7? Maybe some strange Chinese stuff? I also recognized that the startup screen of Outlook Express reads "Outllok Express" (no typo) I´m kind of confused, maybe someone could put light into this ;)

  • Windows7 access to Printer shared with XP ?

    I have, at home, an eeebox running with XP 24/24 with an attached printer (Canon IP5300) installed as shared. We have a few other laptops and PC, all with vista, that can access and print on the shared printer without problem. We just received a new Dell computer with Windows7-64 on it, but it fails to connect the shared printer. I tried connecting the printer with its USB cord directly to the Windows7 PC and the required driver was automatically downloaded and installed. I could then access the printer specific properties, etc. But if I connect it back to the XP computer, the windows7 PC still refused to connect to the remote printer although it now have the drivers. The windows7 is a family pack. By the way, I also have an old canon scanner still perfectly working with XP, but for which I can't find compatible drivers for windows 7. Do I have to buy a new one ? Any help would be welcome.

    I've setup Virtual PC and XP Mode on my Windows 7 Pro. Using Apache 2.0.52 I have no problems having my website up and running on the Windows 7 machine. But Under VPC/XP Mode the best I can do is Localhost mode. What do I need to do to enable http connections? I need the XP Mode as besides the website I also run a Web BBS and a Dos based (via telnet) BBS. Some of the apps in the Dos BBS just won't work under 64 bit, no matter what setting (capability) are used. Thanks in advance...

    I have been tasked to install Windows XP, IE, and Office 2007 on a computer that will become part of a standalone network not connected to the Internet. What is a good way to install all of the security updates? I'm installing from CD's of Windows XP SP2 and MS Office 2007. Next I plan to download Windows XP SP3 and Office 2007 SP2, burn them to CD's, and install both service packs. Finally I plan to go to the Microsoft Download Center and download all applicable security updates, burn then to CD, and install them. I estimate that there are over 100 of these updates. Is there a more efficient way to do this?

    I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment.   • DVD-ROM: Pioneer DVD-115GA not being detected.

    Specs to put things in context: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 2 x 512 MB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / Windows XP Pro SP3 So this computer is actually an upgraded EMachines T2482. I found a used DVD-ROM for cheap... the Pioneer DVD-115GA. I originally had a plain DVD Reader (Lite-On XJ-HD166S) which was quite useless. So I basically did a simple swap of the drive and powered up the computer. The drive could open and close, and I put in a DVD and it was spinning, but no detection. Going into the BIOS, the drive was not detected. (The IDE cable connecting the DVD-ROM is connected to the CD-ROM below it and then attached to the secondary IDE port on the motherboard.) So I started all the way up and tried to scan for hardware changes in Computer Management. Still, nothing. I have the software downloaded from the Pioneer site, and that couldn't detect anything. So what else can I try to hopefully get my DVD-ROM recognized by the BIOS? Thanks in advance!

  • 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem: csrss.exe

    Hi all, I just booted up my Samsung N120 netbook (with Windows XP Home SP3) and a dialog box came up with a command prompt window behind it. The dialog box is titled 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem and the message is as follows: C:\DOCUME~1\SAMSUNG\csrss.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0544 IP:0117 OP:63 00 64 00 34 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. This only started on my most recent boot-up. One thing to note is that when I downloaded the Dropbox installer and opened it up, Panda Cloud Antivirus detected a suspicious file, which was csrss.exe and "neutralized it." However, an actual virus or trojan was not detected immediately before the file was detected and neutralized. Just under two weeks ago, a trojan and two viruses were detected for some odd reason. (I only went to website I knew and I do not torrent or browse adult sites.) Anyhow, the two viruses came up in temporary files and the trojan was "neutralized." Anyways, the main question is: How can I repair the csrss.exe file such that Windows XP starts up properly? A screenshot could be posted upon request. Thanks in advance!

  • Put one monitor of a dual monitor windows system into standby

    Standby not Disabled! When running 2 monitors on windows 7 or Windows XP, I would like to be able to put one of the monitors at a time into standby. The method can be manual. When running 2 monitors , the second monitor is not always needed, shutting off the monitors own power switch will turn off the monitor, that does work Ok. Problems with that are , the delay with the monitor logo at turn on, and the power switch is not very accessable, and the switch might not live forever turning it on and off so many times. Using disable methods like devcon, WIN-P and Display, causes all the windows to properly move to the other monitor. While that is what a person would want to happen so they can get hold of the windows, that is not what I want to happen, and some things on the other monitor have to be re-arranged after a re-enable. By putting it into standby mode, nothing changes other than the monitor going into standby. Disconnecting the DVI cable still can cause the system to (properly) shift all the windows over to the one monitor, just like any of the disable methods do. That makes a mess of the windows, and is so unacceptable, that I would prefer to leave the monitor on, wasting power and the hardware, when it could easily go into standby for some time. For both monitors I am using a "MonitorOff" program that puts both monitors into standby, but I can not find a utility that will put only ONE monitor into standby for the windows system. If someone comes along and suggests "ultramon" you must know for a fact that it will put One of either of the monitors into actual standby. And it does not really suit me to use ultramon, I tested it (it was nice) and I did not feel that it was a program I wanted. The 2 monitors are running off of an ATI 4890 card, they are both hooked up DVI-I, the OS is both Windows 7 (primary) and Windows XP. In addition it would also be interesting to have seperate standby activity timers, and follow mouse kind of standby changes, but any manuel method , shortcut, batch , tray, or gadget kind of operation would be a good start.

  • Reorganize Primary/Recovery Partitions and then install Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

    Hi all, I have a Samsung N120 netbook (with upgraded 2GB RAM). I recently got a new hard drive and motherboard for it because the original parts were faulty. However, when I got it back, whoever was working on it decided to make my primary partition ~40GB in size, compared to (what appears to be) the recovery partition, which is around 100GB in size. Firstly, I want to make the recovery partition much smaller (around ~10GB or smaller, if possible) and then make my primary partition fill the rest of the space. After that, I want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. I don't know if this is installed within Windows like Ubuntu 9.10 but I want both XP and UNR on my machine at the same time. So basically... how do I resize my primary and recovery partitions such that the recovery is about 10GB or less and the primary fills the rest? Secondly, is UNR installed within Windows? (If not, would it create its own partition on my hard drive, along with the XP partition, and the recovery partition?) Thanks in advance.

  • Issues installing new drivers

    I have a Windows XP Home SP3 system that won't detect anything on USB. It works on Ubuntu Live (off USB), and the USB keyboard and mouse work in the BIOS. Physically speaking, I'm sure it's fine. I installed the SMBus drivers and the USB driver from the motherboard's website, adn that went fine. If I plug anything in, it can detect the type of thing it is (i.e. keyboard, mouse, flash drive, etc) and even the name sometimes (i.e. Microsoft 5 button mouse), but won't accept any drivers. I have tried putting the Windows CD in the drive, but that didn't help. I have scanned for viruses and CHKDSK with no issues, and ran a MemTest86 with no issues. I am limited to one PS/2 connection for inputs, so I'm using the keyboard and haven't tried WU yet. A colleague suggested trying a new USB controller, so I put in a PCI one that only had drivers for 9x on the CD, so I assume that XP has them built in. It goes through the Found New Hardware wizard, but never actually finds drivers. I have also tried running SFC /SCANNOW and System Restore. SFC just flashes and goes away, making me believe it may be a hidden virus somewhere, but everything else seems to work, including MSE. I have reason to believe it's just an issue with detecting hardware, since even the USB Controller card can't seem to find drivers, but it can detect WHEN a USB device is connected Anyone else run into this, or have a suggestion short of re-installing Windows?

  • Windows 7 on an EEE PC 901 - Is it a practical change?

    I am currently running WinXP on my EEE PC 901, and I'm happy to say that it runs really well. But this did not come with out significant manipulation of the OS. Here's the basic steps I took: Install XP Modify registry to install Install bare essential drivers Relocate page file to d:\ (remember, this model has two SSD's, one roughly 3.6gb, and the other roughly 16gb - XP won't run on the bigger drive, only the smaller one) Install remaining drivers skip normal updates, install service pack 2 straight away. modify system registry to place service pack backup folder into new Program Files directory on D drive (where software is being installed). Change My Documents folder to sit on D drive. Install .net framework Install remaining updates and service pack 3 (the hidden backup folders in the c:\Windows directory are deleted after every update as well as the contents of the service pack downloads folder in order to continually free up space). I have also found that Disktrix UltimateDefrag to be brilliant at keeping the system clean and tidy. This is roughly the order I did things in. In this configuration the machine works really well. QUESTION: Can this kind of configuration be implemented with Windows 7 to achieve the same result on this machine? Thanks in advance. Dave.
