• How Do You Insert Large Blobs Into Oracle 10G Using System.Data.OracleClient?

  Trying to insert 315K Gif files into an Oracle 10g database. Everytime I get this error "ora-01460: unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested" whe I run the stored procedure. It appears that there is a 32K limit if I use a stored procedure. I read online that this does not apply if you are doing a direct insert, but I do not know how to create the insert string for a Byte Array. This is a thick client running on the server so not worried about SQL Injection attacks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. FYI, code in vb.net. Thanks, Dave

• Custom message headers in WCF on Mono

  I'm making WCF calls from a Mono client running on Ubuntu (Mono 2.6). I can't seem to add a custom header to my messages. I have tried two different ways: Using a [MessageContract] and [MessageHeader] attributes on a custom class Adding the header to the outgoing messages programmatically, e.g. MessageHeader mhg = new MessageHeader("test"); MessageHeader untyped = mhg.GetUntypedHeader("token", "ns"); OperationContext.Current.OutgoingMessageHeaders.Add(untyped); The header is not there when the call reaches the server! It's always null. Note that both methods work fine running on .NET in Windows. Also note that the message body gets through just fine on Mono. • MySQL Binary Storage using BLOB VS OS File System: large files, large quantities, large problems.

  Hi Guys, Versions I am running (basically latest of everything): PHP: 5.3.1 MySQL: 5.1.41 Apache: 2.2.14 OS: CentOS (latest) Here is the situation. I have thousands of very important documents, ranging from customer contracts to voice signatures (recordings of customer authorisation for contracts), with file types including, but not limited to jpg, gif, png, tiff, doc, docx, xls, wav, mp3, pdf, etc. All of these documents are currently stored on several servers including Windows 32 bit, CentOS and Mac, among others. Some files are also stored on employees desktop computers and laptops, and some are still hard copies stored in hundreds of boxes and filing cabinets. Now because customers or lawyers could demand evidence of contracts at any time, my company has to be able to search and locate the correct document(s) effectively, for this reason ALL of these files have to be digitised (if not already) and correlated into some sort of order for searching and accessing. As the programmer, I have created a full Customer Relations Management tool that the whole company uses. This includes Customer Profiles management, Order and job Tracking tools, Job/sale creation and management modules, etc, and at the moment any file that is needed at a customer profile level (drivers licence, credit authority, etc) or at a job/sale level (contracts, voice signatures, etc) can be uploaded to the server and sits in a parent/child hierarchy structure, just like Windows Explorer or any other typical file managment model. The structure appears as such: drivers_license |- DL_123.jpg voice_signatures |- VS_123.wav |- VS_4567.wav contracts So the files are uplaoded using PHP and Apache, and are stored in the file system of the OS. At the time of uploading, certain information about the file(s) is stored in a MySQL database. Some of the information stored is: TABLE: FileUploads FileID CustomerID (the customer id that the file belongs to, they all have this.) JobID/SaleID (the id of the job/sale associated, if any.) FileSize FileType UploadedDateTime UploadedBy FilePath (the directory path the file is stored in.) FileName (current file name of uploaded file, combination of CustomerID and JobID/SaleID if applicable.) FileDescription OriginalFileName (original name of the source file when uploaded, including extension.) So as you can see, the file is linked to the database by the File Name. When I want to provide a customers' files for download to a user all I have to do is "SELECT * FROM FileUploads WHERE CustomerID = 123 OR JobID = 2345;" and this will output all the file details I require, and with the FilePath and FileName I can provide the link for download. http... server / FilePath / FileName There are a number of problems with this method: Storing files in this "database unconcious" environment means data integrity is not kept. If a record is deleted, the file may not be deleted also, or vice versa. Files are strewn all over the place, different servers, computers, etc. The file name is the ONLY thing matching the binary to the database and customer profile and customer records. etc, etc. There are so many reasons, some of which are described here: http://www.dreamwerx.net/site/article01 . SO, after much research I have pretty much decided I am going to store ALL of these files in the database, as a BLOB or LONGBLOB, but there are still many considerations before I do this. I know that storing them in the database is a viable option, however there are a number of methods of storing them. I also know storing them is one thing; correlating and accessing them in a manageable way is another thing entirely. The article provided at this link: dreamwerx.net/site/article01 describes a way of splitting the uploaded binary files into 64kb chunks and storing each chunk with the FileID, and then streaming the actual binary file to the client using headers. This is a really cool idea since it alleviates preassure on the servers memory; instead of loading an entire 100mb file into the RAM and then sending it to the client, it is doing it 64kb at a time. I have tried this (and updated his scripts) and this is totally successful, in a very small frame of testing. So if you are in agreeance that this method is a viable, stable and robust long-term option to store moderately large files (1kb to couple hundred megs), and large quantities of these files, let me know what other considerations or ideas you have. Also, I am considering getting a current "File Management" PHP script that gives an interface for managing files stored in the File System and converting it to manage files stored in the database. If there is already any software out there that does this, please let me know. I guess there are many questions I could ask, and all the information is up there ^^ so please, discuss all aspects of this and we can pass ideas back and forth and teach each other. • How to sign installation files of a Visual Studio .msi

  This may be a duplicate, though I can't find it at this time. If so please point me in the right direction. I recently purchased an authenticode certificate from globalsign and am having problems signing my files for deployment. There are a couple of .exe files that are generated by a project and then put into a .msi. When I sign the .exe files with the signtool the certificate is valid and they run fine. The problem is that when I build the .msi (using the visual studio setup project) the .exe files loose their signatures. So I can sign the .msi after it is built, but the installed .exe files continue the whole "unknown publisher" business. How can I retain the signature on these files for installation on the client machine? You help is appreciated. -Alex

  I'm currently trying to do the following: Trigger: click on a name in a select list. Action : open mailto-link in current window, thus opening an email client. $(document).ready(function(){ // Define click-event $('option').click(function(){ var mail = $(this).attr('value'); window.open('mailto:'+mail, '_self'); }); }); I've also tried using this instead of window.open: parent.location.href= 'mailto:'+mail; However, both work only in firefox, get no errors/results in IE8 or Chrome. Anybody know what the problem could be?

• Excel parsing (xls) date error

  I'm working on a project where I have to parse excel files for a client to extract data. An odd thing is popping up here: when I parse a date in the format of 5/9 (may 9th) in the excel sheet, I get 39577 in my program. I'm not sure if the year is encoded here (it is 2008 for these sheets). Are these dates the number of days since some sort of epoch? Does anyone know how to convert these numbers to something meaningful? I'm not looking for a solution that would convert these properly at time of parsing from the excel file (we already have thousands of extracted files that required a human to select relevant information - re-doing the extraction is not an option).

  I want to build a .Net application for processing audio, and distribute it using ClickOnce deployment. I need access to a raw audio pipeline. Which audio library should I be using? I've heard the managed libraries for DirectSound are a dead end. I need as little as possible to be installed on the client's machine. Anything outside of the ClickOnce process isn't going to work. NAudio might be a possibility, but isn't there potentially a separate driver install? There's also SlimDX. It's a shame -- the managed DirectX libraries seem to work nicely and from what I've read, DirectX can be included in the ClickOnce install.

• SQL Server Reporting Services - Fast TimeDataRetrieval - Long TimeProcessing

  An application that I support has recently begun experiencing extended periods of time required to execute a report in SQL Server Reporting Services. The reports that are being executed are not terribly complex. There are multiple stored procedures (between 5 and 8) which return anywhere from a handful to 8000 records total. Reports are generally from 2 to 100 pages. One can argue (and I have) the benefit of a 100 page report, but the client is footing the bill. At any rate, the problem is that even the reports with 500 records (11 pages) being returned takes 5 minutes to return to the browser. In the execution log the TimeDataRetrieval is 60 seconds, but the TimeProcessing is 235 seconds. It seems bizarre to me that my query runs so quickly, but it takes Reporting Services so long to process the data. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Bernie

  I have a ReSTful web service which needs to parse culture-sensitive data from the request. This data could either be in an XML body or part of the query string. Is there any acepted way of determining which culture the data is being sent in (and by extension the culture in which the response should be sent)? One option is simply to specify to the clients the culture in which all requests should be sent. A friendlier option seems to be to allow the client to specify the culture. I've considered: a) using the accept-language http header to encode this information. b) using the xml:lang attribute for XML POSTs, and an extra field for query strings (e.g. ...&culture=en-GB) http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-accept-lang-locales warns of limitations in using the accept-language header, but most of the warnings seem to center around requests originating from browsers. In my case the requests will come from other applications. All advice greatly appreciated!

• Call stored procedure using Spring SimpleJdbcCall with callback

  I have an Oracle Stored procedure that takes CLOB input and REFCURSOR output. I invoke the SP via Spring SimpleJdbcCall passing in a RowMapper to map the results. However, since the result set is large, I need to provide callback feature to the client. I can't quite figure out how to add callback for an SP call using Spring - both with and without SimpleJdbcCall. One thought I have is to pass-in a RowCallbackHandler. Will this work or is there a better way to solve this problem? • onload Event in embedded SVG not calling function in attached script. Scope Issue?

  Hi So I've got an XHTML page with a script - not inline > <script type="text/javascript" > src="../global/js/scripts.js"></script> and an embedded (I tried embed and object, same behavior) SVG document with a onload="CheckIfLoaded(evt)" attribute. The problem is firefox doesn't call the CheckIfLoaded() function in scripts.js. Firebug gives me "CheckIfLoaded() is not defined" with no reference to any line numbers. I can't find any information regarding the scope of javascript functions with respect to embedded content. Curiously, it works fine in IE. I could of course add a reference to the script into the SVG file as well but I believe that will result in the client downloading the scripts file twice and in addition I have 1000+ svg files and I'd really rather not add one line to all of them, although I suppose I could write a batch file or whatever if I have to. The reason is for example that I want to be able to share a GWT service between two different GWT client projects. All I've gotten to work so far is if the service is located within the module context, i.e. http://host:8080/foo/bar works fine, using @RemoteServiceRelativePath("bar") in my service interface. It seems that the @RemoteServiceRelativePath only allows a value relative to the module base URL...so is there some other way to accomplish what I'm trying to accomplish?

  I'm building an application based on the WebSharingAppDemo-CEProviderEndToEnd. When I deploy the server portion on a server, the code gives the error "The path is not valid. Check the directory for the database." during the call to NeedsScope() in the CeWebSyncService.cs file. Obviously the server can't access the client's sdf but what is supposed to happen to make this work? The app uses batching to send the data and the batches have to be marshalled across to the temp directory but this problem is occurring before any files have been batched over. There is nothing for the server to look at to determine whether the peerProivider needs scope. I have a desktop application using Local DB Cache (SQL CE) to synchronize with the central database and I also have a web application with its own SQL Server that I'd also would like to keep synchronized. All synchronizations must be bidirectional. Is there a way to synchronize my central database with web application's database in the same way as I synchronize my central database with desktop client? I know about collaboration scenarios and peer-to-peer synchronization but I would like to avoid manual provisioning of databases.   We took over a website from another company after a client decided to switch. We have a table that grows by about 25k records a day, and is currently at 15MM records. The table looks something like: id (PK, int, not null) member_id (int, not null) another_id (int, not null) date (datetime, not null) SELECT COUNT(id) FROM tbl can take up to 15 seconds. A simple inner join on 'another_id' takes over 30 seconds. I can't imagine why this is taking so long. Any advice? SQL Server 2005 Express

• Hybrid static/dynamic Google Map

  Ever noticed that when you go to maps.google.com and do a search (say, car wash), it renders a lot of results (represented by small circles) and a few prominent ones (seen as regular-size pins)? Notice how quickly it does this? From what I can tell from analyzing this in Firebug, much of this is generated on the server and sent to the client as a static image. However, it's still dynamic. You can still zoom in and out, or click on a result and see a dynamic InfoWindow rendered. Google have made the map quick and smooth using static images, while still making it flexible. Is there a way to do this kind of 'pre-loading' with my own Google Map (implemented with the Google Maps API)?
