  • Can I just release the top object (iPhone)?

    If I release the object that's holding a reference to the variable that I need to release, is that sufficient? Or must I release at every level of the containment hierarchy? I fear that my logic comes from working with a garbage collector for too long. For instance, I assigned to this property of a UIPickerView instance by hand instead of using IB @property(nonatomic, assign) id<UIPickerViewDelegate> delegate Since it's an assign property, I can't just release the reference after I assign it. When I finally release my UIPickerView instance, do I need to do this: [singlePicker.delegate release]; [singlePicker release]; or is the second line sufficient? Also: Are these assign properties the norm, or is that mostly for Interface Builder? I thought that retain properties were the normal thing to expect.

  • Problem: scrolling a tableview and then select the searchbar (iphone)

    Hello everyone, I've been stuck with this problem for hours and I can't see the light. Please give me a hand with this: I have a tableview and a searchbar. The searchbar is situated in the navigationbar. When I do a fast scroll of the tableview, if I select the searchbar while the tableview is still decelerating, a exception raises: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSRangeException', reason: ' -[NSMutableArray objectAtIndex:]: index 31 beyond bounds for empty array' How can I stop programmatically the deceleration of the tableview?   • Playing a sequence of sounds without gaps (iPhone)

    I thought maybe the fastest way was to go with Sound Services. It is quite efficient, but I need to play sounds in a sequence, not overlapped. Therefore I used a callback method to check when the sound has finished. This cycle produces around 0.3 seconds in lag. I know this sounds very strict, but it is basically the main axis of the program. EDIT: I now tried using AVAudioPlayer, but I can't play sounds in a sequence without using audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying since that would put me in the same situation as with the callback method of SoundServices. EDIT2: I think that if I could somehow get to join the parts of the sounds I want to play into a large file, I could get the whole audio file to sound continuously. EDIT3: I thought this would work, but the audio overlaps: waitTime = player.deviceCurrentTime; for (int k = 0; k < [colores count]; k++) { player.currentTime = 0; [player playAtTime:waitTime]; waitTime += player.duration; } Thanks

    This short list is what I consider to be the “cream-of-the-crop” in developer conferences. This is also a list of the conferences that I plan on attending in 2011. If you feel your conference is just as good, then shoot me an email at [michael[at]michaelcrump[dot]net, and if possible I will check it out.   In-Person Event Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd, 2011 Redmond on October 17th-21st, 2011 Orlando on December 5th-9th, 2011 Visual Studio Live – I attended this event in November of last year and blogged about my experience. I am also planning on going back to the Orlando session in December of this year. So what did I like the most about this event? Being able to interact one-on-one with a majority of the speakers. If you read my blog post then you will see a list of the speakers that I met up with. I also made a lot of great connections with other professional developers all over the world. They are having an event in Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd. I noticed at this event that they have added a new track on mobile. Being a big fan of mobile, I feel that this is a great move. I must add that you can save $300 bucks by getting the early-bird special.   Virtual Conference SSWUG (DBTechCon) - holds the largest virtual conference in the information technology industry. It is also special to me because they selected a majority of my Silverlight content for the April conference. Codestock.org – If you live in the South then you have heard of CodeStock. To my knowledge, they have only had 3 events so far and they were a huge success. It was such a success that after the last event, everyone was telling me how good it was and how much they enjoyed it. They currently have a call for speakers going on right now, so if you have sessions then be sure to submit yours. So, what makes them stand out? Well for starters Michael Neal (organizer) developed an open API so conference attendees could build their own apps for the sessions. They also encouraged their speakers to go to other sessions instead of stay in a “speaker-room”. Another cool feature is that they are uploading videos from the conference so everyone can benefit. They are currently looking for sponsorship, so help out if you can.   In-Person Event Redmond, WA on October 28/29 2011 *NOT 100% SURE AT THIS POINT* PDC 11 – OK, so the logo should be pdc11 but its not out yet. This event is located on Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, WA. It is probably one of the most well known conferences for developers to attend. One of the big perks from this event is that you typically come away with free stuff. In 2010 they gave away Windows 7 Phones. I remember years earlier they gave away laptops. This of course isn’t the only reason to go, you may get to tour the Microsoft campus. Since pdc is a huge event, you can view all the events for free.   • How to grant secure access to an untrusted developer to an exisiting virtual host?

    Our security policy does not permit ftpd on our servers. Our trusted developers use ftps to access our webservers and they have full access to the server. How do we grant limited access to a single untrusted developer for an existing virtual host. Ive configured rssh to only allow sftp to our untrusted developer, but we dont want him browsing around our other sites. I've investigated chroot, but it seems overly complex and more for restricting access to their home folders. I want to limit access to /srv/www/vhostx/ and below. Whats the best solution?

  • Where to download MS SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition?

    Just got put in charge of a big web project. All I know is the web server is running MS SQL 2005, so I need something comparable to test locally. I figure developer edition is my best bet because it offers everything that the enterprise edition does, but is for development purposes only. But this page is pretty worthless http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/developer.aspx Where do I actually download it? What about SQL 2005 Express? Would that meet my needs? I can't figure out all the differences between these stupid MS products.

  • C# development with Mono and MonoDevelop

    In the past two years, I have been developing .NET from my MacBook by running Windows XP into VM Ware and more recently into Virtual Box from OS X. This way, I could install Visual Studio and be able to work seamlessly. But, this way of working has a major down side: it kills the battery of my laptop… I can easiely last for 3 hours if I stay in OS X, but can only last 45 min when XP is running. Recently, I gave MonoDevelop a try for developing Developer IT‘s tools and web site. While being way less complete then Visual Studio, it provides essentials tools when it comes to developping software. It works well with solutions and projects files created from Visual Studio, it has Intellisence (word completion), it can compile your code and can even target your .NET app to linux or unix. This tools can save me a lot of time and batteries! Although I could not only work with MonoDevelop, I find it way better than a simple text editor like Smultron. Thanks to Novell, we can now bring Microsoft technology to OS X.

    Here is a bit of disappointing news for Apple fan boys. Steve Jobs is again going on medical leave as he wants to concentrate on his health for sometime. In an email to the employees of Apple Steve said, At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health..I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011   In the mail, Steve also said that plans for the product releases scheduled in 2011 will not be affected. This means as rumoured iPad 2 In April, iPhone 5 In June With New Hardware. There is not much information on the medical complications Steve is facing now, but many are thinking  its linked to the liver transplant he had in 2009. What ever may be reason, we wish for this speedy recovery.   • No Clipboard support in Windows Phone 7 Series &ndash; iPhone points laughs

    What exactly were you taking of late MSFT? So much for a spanking new mobile OS which wants to emulate the iPhone OS so badly that it even copied and pasted the iPhone’s erstwhile lack of clipboard support as well? The reason given is so lame (shall I say differently able?) that deserves pity rather than lament. According to MSFT people don’t use the clipboard that often. Being a WinMo user for the better part of my life and having developed for the platform for worse part of it I could say with conviction that Clipboard support was one key differentiator which kept me away from “The Phone to have” of 2007-8-9. Let me try to find few use cases I for one have been using the clipboard. Copy files to and from card and phone memory. Copy images, audio files from apps/browsers/explorer to email other apps. Copy text to/from word documents, notes and emails. Copy content from network drives to memory card. Copy links between browsers (Yes i did it for the love of Opera and PIE alike). Others could definitely come up with more. So who are these so called “users” who provided feedback to MSFT that the clipboard is useless?     Where as a developer do like to you keep your code snippets, links, checklists, final solutions to problems etc? I've fooled with Google Notebook, MS Onenote, TreePad, textfiles, and Evernote a bit (currently leaning toward Evernote). All have pros and cons but none seem to be really suited to developers. Is anyone super-happy with a collection / note system that's not just generic GTD, but with developer-centric utility?

    I'm looking to find a way to install an app automatically on an iphone. An example would be: I have an app called my.app. It's located on my desktop on my mac. When I plug in my iphone to my computer it automatically installs my.app on to my iphone. Is this possible? Any ideas of how I could possible do this or get a workaround? Or, it needs to prompt the user to install it. The app doesn't need to automatically install; it just needs to automatically prompt the user on the iPhone to ask if they want to install it or not.
