• What are the effects of using VS2005 to migrate from .NET 1.1

  Hey guys, I'm working on some legacy code for a client, involving Microsoft Content Management System (MCMS). Currently, everything is local, the code, MCMS, SQLServer, and IIS (5.x). I copied the project folder, and then opened the new copied solution in VS2005, and let it do it's conversion thing. But now nothing works. I've nnotice there have been some changes to IIS profile. What are the extent of these changes...?? Also, my VS2003 fails to recognize the Web Project?? Anyone have any idea what's going on? cheers!

• wrong font in a RichTextBox importing from .rtf

  Hi all, I'm developing a microsoft surface application using expression blend+vs 2008. I have a RichTextBox that loads formatted text from an .rtf file. The text is formatted with uppecases, color, and specific font (helvetica-neue). • Trying to programmatically add a SQL Alias to the registry (just need help with parameters)

  Normally when we spin up a new instance we need to add an alias on one of our boxes so we can easily connect to it through SSMS using SQL Server Configuration Manager. I have written a batch file which adds the appropriate entry into the registry (it is actually two batch files, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit). I am not sure how to get this to run with parameters though. I know %1 and %2 would be for the first two parameters, but when I run this, in the registry it actually puts %1 and %2 as the value pair. if you hardcode hostname and IP Address in place of %1 and %2 the batch file works as expected: REGEDIT4 ; @ECHO OFF ; CLS ; REGEDIT.EXE /S "%~f0" ; EXIT [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo] "%1"="DBMSSOCN,%2,1433"

• Is Classic ADO still viable for a mixed managed/unmanaged App?

  We have a complex architecture with much logic in unmanaged code that needs database access. Currently this is via ODBC drivers and MFC classes and we're considering the issues of migrating our abstraction layer to use ADO or ADO.Net. In the latter case we'd have to be pushing database logic back up into the .Net layer. I'm trying to decide if the pain of invoking the database via .Net callbacks is offset by the improvements in ADO.Net. The Wikipedia comparison was interesting although I'm not sure I believe all the points in the comparison table (eg: does ADO.Net always use XML to pass data?). A 2005 comparison shows ADO.Net performing dramatically faster. Microsoft's guide to ADO.Net for ADO programmers suggests we will gain much from going to ADO.Net especially the way that data is available in native (.Net) types rather than solely through OLEAutomation's Variant.

• .Net - interop assemblies taking 15 seconds to load when being referenced in a function

  This is a C# console application. I have a function that does something like this: static void foo() { Application powerpointApp; Presentation presentation = null; powerpointApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.ApplicationClass(); } That's all it does. When it is called there is a fifteen second delay before the function gets hit. I added something like this: static void MyAssemblyLoadEventHandler(object sender, AssemblyLoadEventArgs args) { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now.ToString() + " ASSEMBLY LOADED: " + args.LoadedAssembly.FullName); Console.WriteLine(); } This gets fired telling me that my interop assemblies have been loaded about 10 milliseconds before my foo function gets hit. What can I do about this? The program needs to call this function (and eventually do something else) once and then exit so I need for these assemblies to be cached or something. Ideas?

  I'm writing many unit tests in VS 2010 with Microsoft Test. Here are the steps we are following : Creating object for database utils inteface Calling the connect() function, to get connected to the database whose extension is .mdb file Above flow is working correct on all windows platform but not on windows server 2008 CORE 32-bit. I also checked whether the ODBC drivers are installed or not, by opening regedit. I found that all drivers specially Microsoft access driver (*.mdb) is installed. ANd I think it is by default get installed while installing OS. Is anyone aware of any thing about ODBC drivers and connectivity to the database (like .mdb) on windows 2008 CORE ( which runs only on command line and no interface)

• Win32 script environment for testing http redirects?

  The past few days I've been working with setting up an Apache server on Windows. The server is supposed to host several .htaccess files, each redirecting (or, in some cases, proxying) to different hosts. I want to create tests for these redirectons, and the solution I'm currently considering is a CGI script running on the same server, sending GET requests to it and verifying that it gets the correct redirection headers back. A scripting solution (vscript/jscript) seems worth exploring, but so far I've only managed to rule out Microsoft.XMLHTTP because it follows the redirect "behind the scenes". Are there any libraries or other solutions already present on a reasonably standard Windows Server that can do this kind of low-level HTTP work? If not, any other suggestions of simple environments to set up for verifying redirects?

• Choosing a Reporting Services parameter value based on the currently logged in user

  Here's my situation. I have a Microsoft Reporting Services report that as a parameter takes a salesperson's name and shows them their sales across their territories blah blah blah. But, salesperson A should not be able to choose and view salesperson B's data. So, my thought was to get the currently logged in user from Reporting Services, and then use that to populate the "salesperson" parameter. Is there a way to get the currently logged in user through some hidden RS interface, or is there some other way of accomplishing my goal that I'm just not seeing? Any help would be GREAT, as the higher ups aren't too happen with my (apparent) lack of security right now.

• VB.NET - cannot get Video Preview to work

  Hi, Overflow. I have an application which is supposed to convert a video via DirectShowSource. I have a checkbox which enables a button called "btnviewcrop" which shows a new form called crp.vb for cropping/shearing pixels off the video. Now, I have a Panel1 that I want to set as the owner (the video drawing surface) but when I set it to open, the application crashes (Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.) and I do not understand how to fix it. • Outlook AppointmentItem - How do I programmatically add RTF to its Body?

  I would like to set the Body of an AppointmentItem to a string of RTF that contains an embedded image. Setting Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.AppointmentItem.Body results in the RTF appearing as-is in the appointment. I have tried using Redemption which wraps the appointment and exposes an RTFBody property, but the RTF formatting (including the image) is lost. In this example (which doesn't have an embedded image) the RTF appears in the document as-is. • What's the "right" way to get Win32 p/Invoke declarations?

  I typically use the site http://www.pinvoke.net/ to grab a DllImport declaration whenever I need to call a Win32 API, and I've noticed it's the de facto standard response on Stack Overflow to API interop questions. Is this what "everyone" does? Is there a better way? Does Microsoft offer an alternative? e.g. a tool that reads .h files and outputs an assembly. Why aren't there some standard assemblies that just expose all the Win32 APIs? What would be the barrier to creating them and using them, as an alternative to a site like pinvoke.net?

  I am studying computer science (A masters at an Ivy league), however most of the jobs i find involve way too much of programming. And frankly programming is not an issue, however programming without a meaning (read financial institution (non trading), other non mainstream jobs) bore me to death! I dont want to end up becoming a .NET,C#, Java kind of programmer. Can someone tell where i should look for jobs if i wish to do some real computer science work such as Machine Learning etc. I don't mind programming but becoming a Financial Software dev at Bloomeberg or an SDET at Microsoft isn't actually one of my goals. • Pros and Cons of Proprietary Software

  Proprietary software is about as good as open-source software. There are so many problems with proprietary technologies, however, that I'm beginning to think it's best to avoid them: The software will only be maintained as long as the company exists (and profits). The level of security of the application is as unknowable as the source code. Alterations and derivative works, however necessary and beneficial, are disallowed. I simply don't see any point in even learning to use such systems as those created by Microsoft and Apple. Of course I don't pretend that ignorance is the superior option: one has to have a certain working knowledge simply because of the ubiquity of these things. I just don't see any reason why, as an independent developer, I should ever consider it a remotely good idea to actually use them. So that's the question, or discussion topic, or what have you: In what ways do developers benefit at all from using closed-source development software?

• TFS 2010 build template failing to open in designer - how to fix?

  I can open the DefaultTemplate.xaml that was installed as part of our TFS 2010 RC setup. I created a copy of this template called ApplicationTemplate.xaml and modified it slightly, using the workflow designer in Visual Studio. Now, I can no longer open ApplicationTemplate.xaml. When I try, I receive many errors like the following: Error 2 Assembly 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Client' was not found. Verify that you are not missing an assembly reference. Also, verify that your project and all referenced assemblies have been built. C:\Projects\tfs\Hydraulics\BuildProcessTemplates\ApplicationTemplate.xaml 1 1828 Miscellaneous Files However, I can still open and edit the DefaultTemplate.xaml file without any issues. Has anyone else come across this problem, & if so, did you manage to resolve it or did you have to recreate the template?

• Handling Messages in Console Apps/DLLs in C++ Win32

  I would like to have the ability to process Win32 messages in a console app and/or inside a standalone DLL. I have been able to do it in .NET with the following article and it works great in C# inside a console app and standalone DLL http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163417.aspx Is there a way to do the equivalent with C/C++ Win32 APIs? I have tried doing RegisterClassEx(...) and CreateWindow(...) even passing in HWND_MESSAGE to hWndParent but the trouble is that after the "invisible" window is created messages are not being processed probably due to the lack of a message pump. Where would the message pump go if you had a DLL entry point? I have tried creating another thread in a DLL and put while(GetMesage(..)) there but that did not work either. Any ideas?

My code is heavily client-server communications dependant, and I access the GUI dispatcher in several places to make sure important data is only accessed on a single thread (ie. the GUI thread). This dispatcher seems unavailable in the unit tests - I have tried using Deployment.Current.Dispatcher and even created an instance of a blank control to try use its own dispatcher, but both don't work. The code inside of Dispatcher.BeginInvoke() just never executes, even if I include a Thread.Sleep afterwards.

• In what circumstances can large pages produce a speedup ?

  Modern x86 CPUs have the ability to support larger page sizes than the legacy 4K (ie 2MB or 4MB), and there are OS facilities (Linux, Windows) to access this functionality. The Microsoft link above states large pages "increase the efficiency of the translation buffer, which can increase performance for frequently accessed memory". Which isn't very helpful in predicting whether large pages will improve any given situation. I'm interested in concrete, preferably quantified, examples of where moving some program logic (or a whole application) to use huge pages has resulted in some performance improvement. Anyone got any success stories ? There's one particular case I know of myself: using huge pages can dramatically reduce the time needed to fork a large process (presumably as the number of TLB records needing copying is reduced by a factor on the order of 1000). I'm interested in whether huge pages can also benefit more mundane applications though.

• In Visual Studio 2008, how can I make control+click do a "Go To Definition"?

  I know this is not strictly about programming, but it's pretty close. Anyway, in Delphi, you can hold control and click on a method to jump to its definition. In VS2008, you have to right-click and select "Go To Definition". I use this function quite often, so I'd really like to get VS to behave like delphi in this regard - its so much quicker to ctrl+click. I don't think there's a way to get this working in base VS2008 - am I wrong? Or maybe there's a plugin I could use? Edit: Click then F12 does work - but isn't really a good solution for me.. It's still way slower than ctrl+click. I might try AutoHotkey, since I'm already running it for something else. Edit: AutoHotkey worked for me. • How to presist the user authentication in SL3 + RIA

  I am developing SL3 + RIA services with custom authentication. I followed the example in http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/RiaServices/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=2661 to implement custom authentication. Based on the implementation, you first do login request from client to service. This request is async process. Since login is async, the control will go back to GUI which then starts to do data bind in SL controls using RIA services, the services happens to requires the authentication to be successful (by adding [RequireAuthentication] attribute). The trouble is, since you requested login might not have completed before the data binding starts t this stage the authentication is false because of that data binding will fail. I would like to know if you require your web services to have 'RequireAuthentication' how would you wait for authentication to complete at the server side or client side. Appriciate the help.
