• Laptop HDD not mounting.

  I have a laptop with broken (shorted out) motherboard and a 640 GB HDD. I want to recover my data from the hard disk. Every time I connect the hard disk using an external casing, it is being detected in the disk management service but not visible in my computer, nor accessible through command prompt. The Hard Disk is functioning as I can feel the hard disk rotor working properly when connected using the casing. Also the LED on the hard disk is blinking, the data is there but i am unable to access the data. Someone please suggest me ways of using the hard-disk as a slave disk using casing.

• Joining windows LANs through SSH tunnel

  I have at home a computer (a windows 7 ult machine) I need to use to manage stuff at the office which hosts windows and linux servers. I am able to set up a SSH tunnel (atleast for firefox proxying) and I'd like to be able to access shared windows network drives on the other end too. I heard something about needing some kind of samba service but I couldn't find anything useful by googling that. What do I need in order to make an SSH tunnel to the office (a NAS, running linux) so that I can access windows server 2008 and windows 7 network drives? Bonus: I'd like to be able to access a MSSQL database server too if it's possible.

• Turn "log slow queries" ON.

  Hello, I'm trying to log mysql slow queries, but I can't turn it on. I will explain all my steps: Open and Edit my.cnf and add the following lines: long_query_time = 5 slow_query_log_file = /myfolder/slowq.log log_slow_queries = 1 =(I have MySQL 5.0.7) Give mysql user permitions to write on the file: chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql Create the file: touch /myfolder/slowq.log Chmod for this file to 777. service mysqld restart From MySQL Admin Panel I can see that the "log_slow_queries" var is OFF! • How do synchronize two folders in Windows 7 in real-time?

  I want Windows 7 to synchronize two folders in real time (maybe running a service that monitors a folder)? Basically I want to monitor a folder and synchronize each change (new files, changed files, deleted files) to another drive. It has to be in real time, so it gets synchronized instantly when a change happens. A one-direction synchronisation is enough. I tried Microsofts SyncToy, but it does only syncing by hand or scheduled. Can this be achieved with Windows 7 itself or does anyone know a freeware application for this?

• I can't get an IP address from a VirtualBox VM on OSX from some routers (ie Internet cafes)

  On OSX 10.7.3, VirtualBox, using bridged adapter. Everything on the networking side works perfectly as expected in some networking environments, like my home router and some cafes. In others, I can't get an IP address over DHCP, and I don't know why. I suspect there is some setting on the router that is preventing me, or I have some issue with my MAC adress. When it's not working, in syslog, I'll see a few DHCPDISCOVER messages as my VM tries to find a DHCP server, and after a while, "No DHCPOFFERS received" And when I go to a "good" router, a simple "service network restart" is all I need to get an IP. Any ideas?

• EF4 POCO WCF Serialization problems (no lazy loading, proxy/no proxy, circular references, etc)

  OK, I want to make sure I cover my situation and everything I've tried thoroughly. I'm pretty sure what I need/want can be done, but I haven't quite found the perfect combination for success. I'm utilizing Entity Framework 4 RTM and its POCO support. I'm looking to query for an entity (Config) that contains a many-to-many relationship with another entity (App). I turn off lazy loading and disable proxy creation for the context and explicitly load the navigation property (either through .Include() or .LoadProperty()). However, when the navigation property is loaded (that is, Apps is loaded for a given Config), the App objects that were loaded already contain references to the Configs that have been brought to memory. This creates a circular reference. Now I know the DataContractSerializer that WCF uses can handle circular references, by setting the preserveObjectReferences parameter to true. I've tried this with a couple of different attribute implementations I've found online. It is needed to prevent the "the object graph contains circular references and cannot be serialized" error. However, it doesn't prevent the serialization of the entire graph, back and forth between Config and App. If I invoke it via WcfTestClient.exe, I get a stackoverflow (ha!) exception from the client and I'm hosed. I get different results from different invocation environments (C# unit test with a local reference to the web service appears to work ok though I still can drill back and forth between Configs and Apps endlessly, but calling it from a coldfusion environment only returns the first Config in the list and errors out on the others.) My main goal is to have a serialized representation of the graph I explicitly load from EF (ie: list of Configs, each with their Apps, but no App back to Config navigation.) NOTE: I've also tried using the ProxyDataContractResolver technique and keeping the proxy creation enabled from my context. This blows up complaining about unknown types encountered. I read that the ProxyDataContractResolver didn't fully work in Beta2, but should work in RTM. For some reference, here is roughly how I'm querying the data in the service: var repo = BootStrapper.AppCtx["AppMeta.ConfigRepository"] as IRepository<Config>; repo.DisableLazyLoading(); repo.DisableProxyCreation(); //var temp2 = repo.Include(cfg => cfg.Apps).Where(cfg => cfg.Environment.Equals(environment)).ToArray(); var temp2 = repo.FindAll(cfg => cfg.Environment.Equals(environment)).ToArray(); foreach (var cfg in temp2) { repo.LoadProperty(cfg, c => c.Apps); } return temp2; I think the crux of my problem is when loading up navigation properties for POCO objects from Entity Framework 4, it prepopulates navigation properties for objects already in memory. This in turn hoses up the WCF serialization, despite every effort made to properly handle circular references. I know it's a lot of information, but it's really standing in my way of going forward with EF4/POCO in our system. I've found several articles and blogs touching upon these subjects, but for the life of me, I cannot resolve this issue. Feel free to simply ask questions and help me brainstorm this situation. PS: For the sake of being thorough, I am injecting the WCF services using the HEAD build of Spring.NET for the fix to Spring.ServiceModel.Activation.ServiceHostFactory. However I don't think this is the source of the problem.

• WCF GZip Compression Request/Response Processing

  How do I get a WCF client to process server responses which have been GZipped or Deflated by IIS? On IIS, I've followed the instructions here on how to make IIS 6 gzip all responses (where the request contained "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate") emitted by .svc wcf services. On the client, I've followed the instructions here and here on how to inject this header into the web request: "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate". Fiddler2 shows the response is binary and not plain old Xml. The client crashes with an exception which basically says there's no Xml header, which ofcourse is true. In my IClientMessageInspector, the app crashes before AfterReceiveReply is called. Some further notes: (1) I can't change the WCF service or client as they are supplied by a 3rd party. I can however attach behaviors and/or message inspectors via configuration if this is the right direction to take. (2) I don't want to compress/uncompress just the soap body, but the entire message. Any ideas/solutions? * SOLVED * It was not possible to write a WCF extension to achieve these goals. Instead I followed this CodeProject article which advocate a helper class: public class CompressibleHttpRequestCreator : IWebRequestCreate { public CompressibleHttpRequestCreator() { } WebRequest IWebRequestCreate.Create(Uri uri) { HttpWebRequest httpWebRequest = Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(HttpWebRequest), BindingFlags.CreateInstance | BindingFlags.Public | BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance, null, new object[] { uri, null }, null) as HttpWebRequest; if (httpWebRequest == null) { return null; } httpWebRequest.AutomaticDecompression =DecompressionMethods.GZip | DecompressionMethods.Deflate; return httpWebRequest; } } and also, an addition to the application configuration file: <configuration> <system.net> <webRequestModules> <remove prefix="http:"/> <add prefix="http:" type="Pajocomo.Net.CompressibleHttpRequestCreator, Pajocomo" /> </webRequestModules> </system.net> </configuration> What seems to be happening is that WCF eventually asks some factory or other deep down in system.net to provide an HttpWebRequest instance, and we provide the helper that will be asked to create the required instance. In the WCF client configuration file, a simple basicHttpBinding is all that is required, without the need for any custom extensions. When the application runs, the client Http request contains the header "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate", the server returns a gzipped web response, and the client transparently decompresses the http response before handing it over to WCF. When I tried to apply this technique to Web Services I found that it did NOT work. Although the helper class was executed in the same was as when used by the WCF client, the http request did not contain the "Accept-Encoding: ..." header. To make this work for Web Services, I had to edit the Web Proxy class, and add this method: protected override System.Net.WebRequest GetWebRequest(Uri uri) { System.Net.HttpWebRequest rq = (System.Net.HttpWebRequest)base.GetWebRequest(uri); rq.AutomaticDecompression = DecompressionMethods.GZip | DecompressionMethods.Deflate; return rq; } Note that it did not matter whether the CompressibleHttpRequestCreator and block from the application config file were present or not. For web services, only overriding GetWebRequest in the Web Service Proxy worked.

• Why isn't the Spring AOP XML schema properly loaded when Tomcat loads & reads beans.xml

  I'm trying to use Spring's Schema Based AOP Support in Eclipse and am getting errors when trying to load the configuration in Tomcat. There are no errors in Eclipse and auto-complete works correctly for the aop namespace, however when I try to load the project into eclipse I get this error: 09:17:59,515 WARN XmlBeanDefinitionReader:47 - Ignored XML validation warning org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: schema_reference.4: Failed to read schema document 'http://www.springframework.org/schema/aop/spring-aop-2.5.xsd', because 1) could not find the document; 2) the document could not be read; 3) the root element of the document is not . Based on this, it seems the schema is not being read when Tomcat parses the beans.xml file, leading to the <aop:config> element not being recognised. • WCF timeouts are a nightmare

  We have a bunch of WCF services that work almost all of the time, using various bindings, ports, max sizes, etc. The super-frustrating thing about WCF is that when it (rarely) fails, we are powerless to find out why it failed. Sometimes you will get a message that looks like this: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. Local socket timeout was '01:00:00'. --- System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. The problem is that the local socket timeout it's giving you is merely an attempt to be convenient. It may or may not be the cause of the problem. But OK, sometimes networks have issues. No big deal. We can retry or something. But here's the huge problem. On top of failing to tell you which precisely which timeout (if any) resulted in the failure ("your server-side receive timeout was exceeded," or something, would be helpful), WCF seems to have two types of timeouts. Timeout Type #1) A timeout, that, if increased, would increase the chance of your operation's success. So, the pertinent timeout is an hour, you are uploading a huge file that will take an hour and twenty minutes. It fails. You increase the timeout, it succeeds. I have no no problem with this type of timeout. Timeout Type #2) A timeout which merely defines how long you have to wait for the service to actually fail and give you an error, but modifying the value of this timeout has no impact on the chance of success. Basically, something happens during the first second of the service request which mucks things up. It will never recover. WCF doesn't magically retry the network connection for you. Fine, sometimes establishing a network connection doesn't go well. But, if your timeout is 2 hours, you have to wait 2 whole hours with no chance of it ever working before it finally acknowledges that it didn't work and gives you the error. But the error you see in both cases looks the same. With timeout Type #2, it still looks like you are running into a timeout. But, you could increase all of your timeouts to 4 years, and all it would do is make it take 4 years to get an error message. I know that Type #2 exists because I can do an operation that is known to complete in less than a minute when successful, and have it take 2 hours to fail. But, if I kill it and retry, it succeeds quickly. (If you are wondering why there might be a 2 hour timeout on an operation that takes less than a minute, there are times I run the operation with a much larger file and it could take over an hour.) So, to combat the problem with Type #2, you'd want your timeout to be really quick so you immediately know if there is a problem. Then you can retry. But the insurmountable problem is that because I don't know which timeouts are the cause of failure, I don't know what timeouts are Type #1 and which ones are Type #2. There may be one timeout (let's say the client-side send timeout) that acts like Type #1 in some cases and Type #2 in others. I have no idea, and I have no way of finding out. Does anyone know how to track down Type #2 timeouts so I can set them to low values without having to shorten actual (read: Type #1) timeouts and lower the chance of success? Thank you.

I am trying to login to Google/Youtube using clientLogin, retrieve an AuthSub token, exchange it for a multi-session token and then use it in our upload form. Just a note that we are not going to have other users logging into our (secure) website, this is for our use only (no multi-users). We just want a way to upload videos to our YT account via our own website without having to login/upload to YouTube. Ultimately, everything is dependent on the first step. My AuthSub token is always being returned as invalid (Error '403'). All the steps I used are below with username/password changed. Anyone have an insight on why my AuthSub is always invalid? However, when I try to use my service on IIS I am getting this error: Exception: System.AccessViolationException Message: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. The stack trace leeds to the call of DLL which is presented below. After a lot of reading and experimenting I am almost sure that the error is caused by wrong passing strings to the called function.   I am having an impossible time getting asp.net 4.0 to work in any fashion at all. In fact, I completely wiped my server, reinstalled with Server 2008 R2 Standard (running on a VMWare ESXi box, not that it should matter), and cannot even get a test .aspx page to work. Here is exactly what I did: Installed 2008 R2 Standard Activated windows and enabled Remote Desktop Installed the Web Server Role with the necessary role services(common http, asp.net, logging, tracing, management service and FTP) Enabled the management service Installed .Net Framework 4.0 via web executable Added FTP publishing to the default web site Switched default web site application pool to asp.net 4.0 (integrated) Added a 'test.aspx' file to the inetpub\wwwroot folder (contents below) Opened a browser to http://localhost/test.aspx and received a 500.0 error (also below) What am I missing? I haven't touched IIS in a while (3+ years), so it could be something stupid/trvial. Please point it out, call me a noob; my ego can take it.   Hi all, I want to enable the debug page. So, I have done the following: I have the jboss-seam and jboss-seam-debug jars as dependency in both my ejb and web maven projects (both are modules of my superproject) I put this context parameter in my web.xml: <context-param> <param-name>org.jboss.seam.core.init.debug</param-name> <param-value>true</param-value> </context-param> Now, when I hit the URL of my application, I get the debug page with this exception (full stacktrace at the end of the post): Caused by java.lang.IllegalStateException with message: "No phase id bound to current thread (make sure you do not have two SeamPhaseListener instances installed)" From posts I read it seems that this is somehow related to two jars of jboss-seam or jboss-seam-debug being in the classpath. I opened my ear file and only one of each is present (in the ear) whereas the war itself has no libraries in the WEB-INF/lib. I have also read of another way to initialize debug page using the components.xml. • On REST: WADL or not IDL, is the following approach right ?

  This question is a bit long, please bear with me. In REST, i think we should not need WADL or any IDL. But rather something that would implicitly cover its concept. The way I think about it is when we (humans) surf the Web, when we go to a web site for the first time, we don't know what services it provides. You discover those on the html home page (or a sitemap page in a help section) or maybe just the main menu on the home page. If you make an analogy, the homepage or site map to us humans is what WSDL is to WS-* or what WADL could be to a REST service. Only that its just like any other html content. I think that in REST the following is a good way to do things, respecting the HATEOS paradigm. Have a top level (or default) resource that lists links to your other resources. For a library example, say RestLibrary.com/ it could be something like: <root xmlns:lib="http://librarystandards.com/libraryml"> <resource class="lib:book"> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="add" href="mylib.com/book" method="POST" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="update" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" method="PUT" /> </resource> <resource class="lib:bookList"> <link template="mylib.com/book?keywords={keywords}" type="application/vnd.openlibrary+xml" rel="search" /> </resource> </root> Note that it is assumed that the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is a defined standard or (may be just proprietary vocabulary) named libraryml. Also, the client should be able to understand this "homepage" resource (elements root, resource and link). This is the part that could be used instead of WADL : an Abstract vocabulary that should be understandable by any client. You could use an existing standard like Atom for example. But the main idea is to have an abstract vocabulary understandable by any client. Why not WADL then ? well wadl is only for service discovery. The idea here is to have an light abstract vocabulary that would serve as a base for hypermedia. A "root" vocabulary. Like in owl we have owl:thing...etc Now if the client knows the "libraryml" standard it can follow the links to the things it understands (after parsing the media type properties and xmlns). If not, it just won't. When i can't understand how to deal with something in REST architecture i tend to see how we Humans do it in the Web. In the Web, we have the Generic language that is HTML that enables site builders to deliver any specific content, regardless of its meaning to the client (the user), Browsers understand HTML but not the "meaning" of its content. It is the user that understands the (domain specific) content. If i go to say QuantumPhysics.org, my browser can render the home page (it is just html after all) and i can read the home page. If i understand quantum then fine i can continue browsing. If i don't i just get out (unless i want to learn the hardway :) ) In the RetsLibrary.com example the client app is just like me+my browser on QuantumPhysics.org. the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is quantum physics (knowledge). http is http in both examples. Now HTML of QuantumPhysics.org is in RestLibrary.com is XML + that tiny little abstract vocabulary (root resource and link, that you could replace with something like Atom). So does this approach have any value ? don't we need a root tiny hyper-vocabulary so we can succeed with hypermedia and the "initial URI" concept ? edit Yeah why not RDF as the root vocabulary !

  Hi, I am trying to deploy an ear file to JBOSS AS (defalut server). The application is the mavenised version of examples of SeamInAction book. When I copy the file to $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/deploy, I don't get any exception but the application doesn't respond, after some time trying to access the application from the browser gives following in the log... • Using dispatchertimer in combination with an asynchroneous call

  Hi. We have an issue in our Silverlight application which uses WCF and Entity Framework, where we need to trap the event whenever a user shuts down the application by closing the web page or the browser instead of closing the silverlight application. This is in order to verify if any changes have been made, in which case we would ask the user if he wants to save before leaving. We were able to accomplish the part which consists in trapping the closing of the web page: we wrote some code in the application object that have the web page call a method in the silverlight application object. The problem starts when in this method, we do an asynchroneous call to the Web Service to verify if changes have occured (IsDirty). We are using a DispatcherTimer to check for the return of the asynchroneous call. The problem is that the asynchroneous call never completes (in debug mode, it never ends up stepping into the _BfrServ_Customer_IsDirtyCompleted method), while it used to work fine before we added this new functionality. You will find belowthe code we are using. I am new to writing timers in combination with asynchroneous call so I may be doing something wrong but I cannot figure out what.   I’m fairly new to IoC and perhaps my understanding of generics and inheritance is not strong enough for what I’m trying to do. You might find this to be a mess. • Is the Cloud ready for an Enterprise Java web application? Seeking a JEE hosting advice.

  Greetings to all the smart people around here! I'd like to ask whether it is feasible or a good idea at all to deploy a Java enterprise web application to a Cloud such as Amazon EC2. More exactly, I'm looking for infrastructure options for an application that shall handle few hundred users with long but neither CPU nor memory intensive sessions. I'm considering dedicated servers, virtual private servers (VPSs) and EC2. I've noticed that there is a project called JBoss Cloud so people are working on enabling such a deployment, on the other hand it doesn't seem to be mature yet and I'm not sure that the cloud is ready for this kind of applications, which differs from the typical cloud-based applications like Twitter. Would you recommend to deploy it to the cloud? What are the pros and cons? The application is a Java EE 5 web application whose main function is to enable users to compose their own customized Product by combining the available Parts. It uses stateless and stateful session beans and JPA for persistence of entities to a RDBMS and fetches information about Parts from the company's inventory system via a web service. Aside of external users it's used also by few internal ones, who are authenticated against the company's LDAP. The application should handle around 300-400 concurrent users building their product and should be reasonably scalable and available though these qualities are only of a medium importance at this stage. I've proposed an architecture consisting of a firewall (FW) and load balancer supporting sticky sessions and https (in the Cloud this would be replaced with EC2's Elastic Load Balancing service and FW on the app. servers, in a physical architecture the load-balancer would be a HW), then two physical clustered application servers combined with web servers (so that if one fails, a user doesn't loose his/her long built product) and finally a database server. The DB server would need a slave backup instance that can replace the master instance if it fails. This should provide reasonable availability and fault tolerance and provide good scalability as long as a single RDBMS can keep with the load, which should be OK for quite a while because most of the operations are done in the memory using a stateful bean and only occasionally stored or retrieved from the DB and the amount of data is low too. A problematic part could be the dependency on the remote inventory system webservice but with good caching of its outputs in the application it should be OK too. Unfortunately I've only vague idea of the system resources (memory size, number and speed of CPUs/cores) that such an "average Java EE application" for few hundred users needs. My rough and mostly unfounded estimate based on actual Amazon offerings is that 1.7GB and a single, 2-core "modern CPU" with speed around 2.5GHz (the High-CPU Medium Instance) should be sufficient for any of the two application servers (since we can handle higher load by provisioning more of them). Alternatively I would consider using the Large instance (64b, 7.5GB RAM, 2 cores at 1GHz) So my question is whether such a deployment to the cloud is technically and financially feasible or whether dedicated/VPS servers would be a better option and whether there are some real-world experiences with something similar.
