• Is paying programmers to "test" for bugs normal? [on hold]

  I recently hired a programming team to do a port of my iPad app to the iPhone and Android platforms. I also wanted them to implement a bunch of tips on how to play the app, similar like you would find in Candy Crush or Cut the Rope. They want to charge 12 hours @ $35/hr for the "Testing all of the Tips", telling me that normally it would take them more than 25 hours but that they will 'bear the difference'. I have never heard of this, but maybe it's a new practice? I am used to devs doing their own quality control, and then having a testing/acceptance period... Am I missing something? Thanks for any help and advice you can give!

• is it worth defragging an iPod

  Essentially my 5G iPod was cutting tracks off and generally misbehaving. So I did the following: 1) Use Diskwarrior - heavy directory fragmentation which it fixed; 2) Use iDefrag - some fragmentation but it kept halting as it couldn't move files; 3) Try to write out drive with Disk Utility - got a warning from DU so gave up before I started; 4) Completely restored using iTunes; 5) Reran Diskwarrior - still heavy directory fragmentation; 6) Reran iDefrag, still fragmentation although limited to two bands; The iPod is much quicker to traverse menus and no more track skipping. My question is this - is defragging worth it or does the heat generated by the process kill the drive and make it a self-defeating process. Anyone have any metrics/ figures? Clearly it's a bad idea for solid state drives like the nano & touch.

  I'm having the following issue on a host using Apache 2.2.22 + PHP 5.4.0 I need to provide the file /home/server1/htdocs/admin/contents.php when a user makes the request: http://server1/admin/contents, but I obtain this message on the server error_log. Negotiation: discovered file(s) matching request: /home/server1/htdocs/admin/contents (None could be negotiated) Notice that I have mod_negotiation enabled and MultiViews among the options for the related virtualhost: <Directory "/home/server1/htdocs"> Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks MultiViews Order allow,deny Allow from all AllowOverride All </Directory> I also use mod_rewrite, with the following .htaccess rules: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^([^\./]*)$ index.php?t=$1 [L] </IfModule> It seems very strange, but on the same box with PHP 5.3.6 it used to work correctly. Any idea on why Apache cannot match contents.php when asking for content (which should be what mod_negotiation is supposed to do)?

  I did an dist-upgrade on Debian Wheezy yesterday and got an error with syslog-nc-core. I found that i should try to reinstall it and tried but it ended with an error that apache2 isnt configured. I purged it also and when i now try to reinstall i get the error Setting up apache2 (2.4.10-1) ... • alternative to environment variables

  The amount of servers and the complexity of our application is growing and we now have servers in different regions (hosted on AWS). Certain database operations require low latency so we have stuck a database in each region (which is basically a user cache) to keep the network latency low. The way the application server currently knows which user cache/database to make its call to depends on an environemnt variable set in it. This has been working fine, but it seems hacky and not optimal. Is there any way for this to be done automatically? I was considering using a package like fping and pinging each database when the app server reloads (or caching it the first time) and using the corresponding latencies to decide which database has the lowest latency for each app server. Not sure if this is the best idea though.

  ubuntu 9.04, user luca wants to access the /var/www directory. the directory is owned by user root, group root I changed the group ownership to www-data (sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www/) and added write privileges to that group (sudo chmod -R g+r /var/www), and added luca to that group (sudo adduser luca www-data). Now, why can't luca still write to /var/www? It should be able to, right? in /etc/group we have: "www-data:x:33:luca" permissions for /var/www are: "drwxrwxr-x 2 root www-data 4096 Feb 26 15:35 www"

• How do I capture a 10053 trace for a SQL statement called in a PL/SQL package?

  Traditionally if you wanted to capture an Optimizer trace (10053) for a SQL statement you would issue an alter session command to switch on a 10053 trace for that entire session, and then issue the SQL statement you wanted to capture the trace for. Once the statement completed you would exit the session to disable the trace. You would then look in the USER_DUMP_DEST directory for the trace file. But what if the SQL statement you were interested  in was actually called as part of a PL/SQL package? Oracle Database 11g, introduced a new diagnostic events infrastructure, which greatly simplifies the task of generating a 10053 trace for a specific SQL statement in a PL/SQL package. All you will need to know is the SQL_ID for the statement you are interested in. Instead of turning on the trace event for the entire session you can now switch it on for a specific SQL ID. Oracle will then capture a 10053 trace for the corresponding SQL statement when it is issued in that session. Remember the SQL statement still has to be hard parsed for the 10053 trace to be generated.  Let's begin our example by creating a PL/SQL package called 'cal_total_sales'. The SQL statement we are interested in is the same as the one in our original example, SELECT SUM(AMOUNT_SOLD) FROM SALES WHERE CUST_ID = :B1. We need to know the SQL_ID of this SQL statement to set up the trace, and we can find in V$SQL. We now have everything we need to generate the trace. • Nautilus crashes after Ubuntu Tweak Package Cleaner

  Few days ago I started having some problems with nautilus. Basically when I'm trying to get into a folder it crashes. It's not happening all the time, but in 85% it does... Sometimes, after the crash all my desktop icons are also gone. The only thing that I think causes this is Ubuntu Tweak - I'm not sure, but the issues started after I did the Package cleaner from Ubuntu Tweaks... Any ideas? -------- EDIT ---------- First time, after running the command (nautilus --quit; nautilus --no-desktop) 3 times all the system crashed (except the mouse, I could move the mouse). In there it says to create a /var/www/vhosts/sitename.com/conf/vhost_ssl.conf file for ssl. • Ubuntu + latest samba version, symlinks no longer work on share mounted in windows

  I just apt-getted (apt-got?) the latest software for my Ubuntu 9.10 linux box, and I noticed that samba was the included in the update. After the install, the symlinks in my home directory no longer work when mounted as a drive in my linux box. They worked literally seconds before I did the update. All my normal directories work just fine. Viewing the directory listing on the command line, all the files, dirs & links have the exact same permissions, yet this is the error I get: Location is not available L:\LinkDir is not accessible. Access is denied. I looked on the forums, and i saw this option for the smb.conf follow symlinks = yes wide symlinks = yes unix extensions = no I put those in, but they had no effect. Has anyone had this problem yet?

• Run batch on files in a relative folder

  I have a windows batch script that runs a SOX command on various files, but I don't know how to get the batch to run on files in a relative path to that of the SOX executable. Currently all the files are in the root and it outputs to /combined. The Batch Script: cd %~dp0 mkdir combined FOR %%A IN (*.mp3) DO sox static.mp3 %%A "combined/%%~nxA" pause I want the script to run the sox command on files in the directory "audiotracks" and output it to the directory "combined". To give you an idea, this would be the desired folder structure: /root sox.exe batch.bat static.mp3 /audiotracks audio1.mp3 audio2.mp3 audio3.mp3 audio4.mp3 /combined audio1out.mp3 audio2out.mp3 audio3out.mp3 audio4out.mp3 Is this possible, or is there a better method of doing this?   In any browser if I use www.mysite.com or just mysite.com the web page is correctly retrieved, but I am having trouble with Google Analytics and Facebook App. Facebook: To be able to get Likes, I create the Facebook App needed and set the site URL to http://mysite.com/. Using their tool http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/ when I test my page using http://mypage.com it works but using http://www.mypage.com fails with the message: Object at URL 'http://www.mysite.com/' of type 'website' is invalid because the domain 'www.mysite.com' is not allowed for the specified application id. Google Analytics: To be able to get traffic statistics, I created a Property and a Profile both with the URL http://www.mypage.com and no statistics were gathered in a week, when I changed the configured URL to http://mypage.com statistics where available a few hours later. What should I do to have statistics and likes for both www.mysite.com and mysite.com ??

How can I install this program on Linux? I know it's possible because I have heard of it being done. I just don't have the experience with Linux I need to get it done.   I want a test- and development-environment for web using Apache, PHP and MySQL. I need to be able to test a single web-application with multiple versions of PHP (5.2, 5.3, etc) and multiple versions of MySQL (5.0, 5.1, 5.5, etc). It shall be hosted on a FreeBSD server. My idea is to compile each version into a directory structure and running them on separate portnumbers. For example: opt/apache2.2-php5.2-mysql-5.0 (httpd on port 8801, mysql on port 8802) (directory contains each software, compiled and linked towards eachother) opt/apache2.2-php5.3-mysql-5.1 (httpd on port 8803, mysql on port 8804) (and so on) Any thoughts or suggestions of the best way to setup this type of environment?

• How do I delete or modify Default User's default printer?

  I have some computers that I set up a couple years ago by creating a user account, setting it up the way I wanted, and copying that user's directory over Default User's directory. Pretty simple stuff. One of the things that I did was to add a printer and set it as the default. Straightforward, or so I thought. Things have changed, and that printer has been removed and replaced with a different printer. I deleted the old printer's object and added the new one. Now every time a new user logs in, their profile gets copied from Default User, and they get the old printer as their default. This re-adds the old printer object to the system. Now every user can see the old printer's object again. I want to permanently delete Default User's default printer. How?

• Problem with MVC3 application

  I am working on MVC3 application. I use entity framework, NInject, Fluent Validation and some more Nuget packages. I am using Tortoise SVN for versioning. Recently I changed the structure of my SVN repository, so my working copy of MVC3 app was moved to some different folder in the repository. Now when I checked out the copy from SVN, all the references that I had added through Nuget were lost(EF, NInject and rest nuget packages were showing yellow missing icon in references). This had happened to me prior to this also, when I tried to check out the app from svn to some other folder. I had to manually add all the references again through Nuget again. Am I doing anything wrong? Please guide. I hope I could explain my problem properly.

  I am using the Hiawatha web server and running drupal on a FastCGI PHP server. The drupal site is using imagecache and it requires either private files or clean urls. The issue I am having with clean urls is that requests to files are being rewritten into index.php as well.
